The fire that burned whenever they were together was consuming. Try as they might they could not douse the flames.Amelia was lost from the moment she laid eyes on Jordan Bradford. Besides the fact she was just the maid, there were far too many reason besides the obvious that they could not be together. Still she found herself throwing caution to the wind and knew she would pay whatever the cost for the chance at one more kiss.Forbidden fruit was always sweeter. The saying rang true for Jordan and a flame long thought extinguished was awakened inside him whenever Amelia was near. Time and again he sought her out against his better judgment and his hardened hearts wishes. Denying his desire for her was no longer becoming and option.
Arlene D. Lam is a wife and mother. She resides in Northern California with her husband and son and is currently working on The Wedding. A story that revolves around Jasper and Margaret two characters she feels deserve their own story.
This story was just beautiful. Jordan and Amelia's love story was epic. the story was almost like an interracial gone with the wind with a happy ending. it was a sweet and non-erotic read. there were some issues. Jordan was a little bit of a selfish ass. some of his unilateral decisions were potentially life threatening for Amelia when you consider the time period. yet,i could not put this book down.
This is a great IR historical novel. I loved that the author remained true to the racism and disrcimation of the time period; yet managed to weave such a humorous, sweet, genuine story of love.
I just finished this book and loved it the romance between Jordan and Amelia was a long but fulfilling one. This book is not rushed heated romance it starts with slow like a courtship and you will feel the attraction with the couple from the beginning. The book starts out will Amelia with her aunt Lorraine and that old fool Morgan they have taught her from a young age that she is ugly and fat and that no man would love her. Amelia met Jordan and went through the process of learning about love. Amelia learns to love for the first time in her life and Jordan learns that he can't live without her and learns to love again.
"Rescued" is a sensual, moving, and lush romance of forbidden love, powerful yearning, and long-denied desire between two people who history decreed should not be together. The characters are well-described, believable and enjoyable. The story will wrap you up and not let you go. It's a powerful, touching, and poignant romance of two lovers yearning for each other who must confront and heal the past, face their fears, and continually fight stringent social norms to finally be together.
I surprisingly liked this book. Many didn't so I went in with some trepidation. It is an IR historical romance that actually read like a historical romance and was still able to address the issue of race in that time. Well done in my opinion.
I loved this book. I enjoy IR books that are different from the average IR books out there. Amelia and Jordan's story seemed like they could actually be a real couple. They seemed so real, to me. It was beleivable. One of the parts that I really liked was when Margaret and Jordan was havin a convo about what he was gonna go do to Amelia, when he was on a drunken binder. Amelia was a sweetheart and Jordan was.....just it.(shrugs shoulders) When you read the book you'll see. Morgan(fucker)made me so mad; and that aunt of hers needs to be slapped a few times. Good read, indeed.
I devoured this book in one day. I started before class and finished it when I got home. I loved everything about this book. The sense of humor and HEA. And the male main character Jordan was amazing. I dont know what to say except if you are contemplating about reading this book, READ THIS BOOK!!! REALLY!! It had history with a beautiful romance. The romance was slow building one, and prefect.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
I love a good romance story, so when I was offered this book, I jumped at the chance. I'm glad I did, because I really enjoyed it.
Amelia Marriott is an intriguing character. She is the maid/cook for a family called Bradford. She is a bit on the shy side, but she has an inner strength that comes to the fore. I really liked her a lot.
Jordan Bradford is the head of the Bradford household. He is also an intriguing character. He has a wonderful personality and is a loving brother to little Georgia. I liked him a lot too!
I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started to read this story, but from the first page I was hooked! This story is set in New Orleans in 1872. I must admit that I have not read many interracial historical romances, but this story was very enjoyable. There are some interesting characters that help bring the book to life. Little Georgia (Jordan's sister) is a gem! She is only six, but she had me giggling at her antics. Morgan, Amelia's suitor, on the other hand is an old pervert! His attitude made me want to punch him! Or at least report him to the police! The story is told through several points of view, but Amelia and Jordan are the main characters. They make a lovely couple, but the prejudice they face is still relevant to this day. I personally have no issue with interracial relationships, but a lot of people do. Interracial relationships in the 1800's was rather a risque thing to do, and several families were broken because of it. Both Amelia and Jordan, in my opinion, were very brave to incur the wrath of their respective families. There are several twists and turns that surprised me, and the ending left me smiling.
Arlene Lam has written a fast paced historical romance that flowed beautifully. Her use of colloquial Southern language made the characters become more real. I would definitely consider reading more of her books in the future.
I highly recommend this book if you love historical romances. - Lynn Worton
Really cute and sweet with just enough dose of steam Jordan and Amelia will have you going in circles this was a fun read... but I will say I could have done without the back and forth arguing it was a bit too much... With that being said I am so happy I have finally read a historical romance again! Oh how Ive missed them... :) favourite line "Where did you find it? I thought it was too cold for roses this time of year." "I bought it from a woman in the city, you'd have to ask her. It's much like you-wouldnt you agree?' "How?" "Silly woman what do you mean how? It's lovely to look at."
I'd actually give this 2.5 since it did kind of hold my attention. There was just too little logic going on in this to make it ring even remotely true. You wanted to root for them, but they just made really dumb decisions (both, were very naïve (him) and very lacking in any type of reasonable plan for even the courtship (both, but mostly him). The heroine just got on my nerves with all her hemming and hawing when she was just going to cave regardless.
I wanted to say something about the novel since I didn't bother when I finished and its at least worth a word or two to review. It had bare bones potential- I just walked away from it feeling disappointed. I didn't hate it. Just didn't think it lived up to what it could have been.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have a confession to make. This book sat in my to be read file for way longer than I want to admit. The blurb sounded interesting but for whatever reason I did not begin reading it until yesterday. I so loved these characters and this book. As a fan of historical fiction, especially those involving african-american women, this book did not disappoint.
The hero was flawed (sometimes I wished I could ring his neck) but had many endearing qualities. The heroine seemed very naive to me but that naivety really proved itself to be a quiet strength. The supporting characters were well written.
Arlene Lam, you were indeed a surprise. This is my first read of your work and you caught me quite supremely. I learnt some history with Placage etc.But what was most potent was the storyline, your character development, and you did keep true to the history of that time and its social issues. All in all, we ladies always love it when a wisp of a woman can bring a gorgeous, strapping, sexy man to his knees. Well written, loved it, and most of all I loved your reliance on plot and good storytelling, as the book contained may be 2 to 3 sex scenes. Thumbs up the book is 5 star.
I have only read a few interracial historical romance novels and I have to say this one stands out from the previous novels I read. Rescued is a very good historical romance novel. The characters and story was well developed. I enjoyed the chemistry between Amelia and Jordan. My only complaint is about Morgan, I did not like his character from the beginning. I hope the author continues to write historical interracial romance novels and look forward to reading more books from this author.
A sweet love story. It highlights factually some of the challenges faced by a marriage between races and class within this time period. There are many typos/spelling issues e.g.'an' instead of 'and' and 'the' instead of 'they' which can be annoying over time. Nothing another read thru by a proofreader won't fix. A spellchecker just won't cut it.
I loved this, I liked that Amelia didnt rush things with Jordan, she took her time and allowed herself to be woo'd. Jordan has dealt with heartache having married young to a vindictive older woman. My only wish is that he hadnt allowed his past to affect his present, im glad that Amelia stuck by him although he gave her enough reason to give up on loving him
I guess my expectations are too high when I read a book. I didn't like this one. I thought the hero, Jordan, was selfish and inconsiderate. He just thought about himself and what he wanted, which was Amelia. He didn't care about the consequences that would affect her reputation. I didn't like Amelia either, she was too WEAK she let her aunt and people around her rule her life. After Jordan and Amelia sailed to England the story became long and drawn out, I started skipping pages. The writing wasn't bad, the story just didn't hold my interest.
I just finished this book and fell in love with the character's as well as the complete story! The ending Was a little short but all in all I enjoyed reading all the way through! Fantastic love story
I've previously said that I do not like historical interracial romances for obvious reasons but I'm changing my mind since I've read quite a few that I've loved. This is a good read.
Grammar errors are visible in almost every page in this novel. The story would've flowed better if there is editing.
Also, the editor of this novel needs to get fired for having such egregious grammar errors. Hell, at this point, I am a better proofreader and editor than whoever this editor is.
This is a great book that is desperate for a great editor.
Basic grammatical errors like misspellings, missing punctuation, basic sentence construction were extremely distracting. (Note to author: a comma every once in a while really helps the reader.)
However the content also needs to be edited. The same arguments between H/h became tiresome. (The H was an ass, and the h was a wimp… that was my overall impression after the 5th or 6th argument between them). Also many such scenes, although cute, they added nothing to the whole, no value added = boring extras. For example, the scene with Georgia and the puppy. Or the many contradictions of the “getting ready for the cotillion” scene.
I wish this author the best of luck, because she has the makings of a great book, but needs a better editor. I couldn’t finish this book.
I give this book a five star I enjoyed the story btw H and h, from the time they met the attraction between them and the other supporting characters. The aunt was awful but there is always a bad guy in any story I would recommend this book
Terribly boring...not a believable story with grit and heart...heroine' physical characteristics were NOT that of truly believable black woman...wavy jet black hair down her back and gold eyes...really? Didn't finish...too silly to read.
