North Reich

Rate this book
From Conroy's introduction:

North Reich tells what might have happened if Hitler had not so foolishly declared war on the United States.  FDR certainly understood that Germany was the greatest threat, but might have been helpless to do anything about it.  War between the United States and Germany was still considered inevitable, but not in December of 1941.  North Reich is the story of the war that was going to come sooner or later.  However, in this instance, the fighting takes place not in Europe but in North America.

Robert Conroy was a best selling author of alternate history novels. His 1942, which is set within a Japanese conquest of Hawaii, won the prestigious Sidewise Award for alternate histories.

After taking early retirement from automotive management, Conroy decided to combine his loves of history and writing. After discovering that Kaiser Wilhelm had plans to invade the U.S., he wrote his first alternate history, 1901 in which the invasion took place. He found alternate history fascinating and the possibilities never-ending. He also wrote for Military History Magazine.

Conroy had a MBA, was a US Army Veteran and was a retired instructor at Macomb Community College. He had a married daughter and two grandsons. He lived in southeastern Michigan with his wife of forty-plus years. He passed away in December 2014 from Cancer.

A really good read. The concept is good and does not deviate too much from actual history. Hitler's ideas that the USA was a poor fighter were shown to be false and the outcome was never in doubt.

Una improbable ocupación alemana de Canadá tras la derrota de Inglaterra en la 2ª Guerra Mundial desemboca en una risible invasión a los Estados Unidos. Un divertimento que se deja leer una vez superada la endeble premisa.

This is a "can't put it down" type of book. Yes, it is an alternate history, which not everyone enjoys, but the none stop action, well drawn characters keep you turning the pages. The plot is simple. Germany does not declare war on the US after Pearl Harbor. Thus, Germany ends up defeating England and occupies part of Canada. Thus, in 1944, we fight Germany in the US and in Canada. Amid all of this, are characters you quickly begin to care for, and follow their moves through the war.

It was okay

To be completely honest I found this novel a disappointment. In general I love novels by Robert Conroy. Unfortunately this one has some glaring issues that really irritated me. For example the author goes to great lengths to discuss how to get PT boats from the Atlantic into the Great Lakes and finally choose to ship them by train overland. In reality a PT boat very easily fits through the NY Erie Barge Canal and could make the trip under its own power in a couple days. This doesn't even consider the fact that by 1942 shipyards on the Great Lakes in Michigan and Wisconsin were building convoy escorts much larger than PT boats that would have already been present at the time the novel is set.
My next gripe is the interred British fleet. The only reason to have them in US port is for a dramatic event at the end of the book. There is no reason they would not have gone to India to join the British fleet there except for this dramatic scenario. In actuality the ships would have gone south around Africa to the Indian Ocean supported by British colonies with food and fuel where needed.
So long as you are not bothered by such inconsistencies the book is well written and a fast read. With lots of emphasis on how evil the truly awful nazi ideology was and treatment of prisoners to prove the point. Non history buffs can enjoy this book more than I did.

In North Reich, Nazi Germany win at Stalingrad and push the Russians back, subdue Great Britain and occupy Canada. The United States are busy finishing off Japan and keeping an eye on things North of the border. Anyone who has read other titles by Robert Conroy will immediately be at home. The story is told be a number of characters from each side, from the Military Brass down to civilians and everyone in between, which doesn't allow for too much character development. Conroy never makes his cast so complicated that you forget who's who, but you need to keep your wits about you to keep track of everyone. North Reich follows the Conroy blueprint of things looking glum for the United States before - well, if you're a Conroy fan you'll know already, if not read it and find out. As the story progresses, there is always a feeling of the cavalry arriving just in time, although Conroy is certainly not the only author guilty of this. Like others, I noticed a few grammatical errors/typos, but not enough to be distracting. North Reich dragged in places and is not my favourite Conroy novel, but it's an enjoyable enough alternate history novel for the undemanding reader.

Robert Conway’s books are always interesting if not what you would call great literature. The end of this one felt rushed but it was an enjoyable read.

Masterful

Another excellent book written by Mr. Conroy. Alternate history can be a difficult road to travel. If you exclude time travel, aliens, and other contrivance you end up dealing with what was and various perturbations therein. While the end of the book is a given, it is the journey to get there that is enjoyable. If you paid attention in history class, not the excuse that is today's HS history, you know that the industrial might, fortitude of the U.S. soldiers and their leaders would ultimately win out. Recommend this book to all who love alternative history.

I truly believe that the author rushed through this book it is full of typos. as an example. "Alicia died her hair" Now I am not a grammatical snob but really the typos are very distracting and making it difficult to read and not enjoyable. I'm finding it a difficult read.

Now that I have finished the book I would strongly suggest to the author to have some one else read it before he publishes it. A second set of eyes would most likey catch those big errors

The book had an interesting alternate history concept. I think the believe-ability of the German army getting so much men and materiel across the Atlantic was difficult for me. Furthermore, I personally would have liked more military strategy, and I found an inordinate number of typos. But overall, I would give it a 3. I definitely read through it late at night, which means the story captured me. But I was anxious to get to the part of strategy; however, I did not reach that.

A Good Easy Reading Book

As alternative history possibilities go Mr. Conroy did a commendable job of writing, with few flaws. My only complaint was that editing was a little weak.
