After the disapointment of book #1 and #2, I refused to loose my faith in Brody and Tori. So I chose to read this book. Voluntarily.
From book #1, we learned that Tori was secretly in love with her boss, Brody without him having any idea about it. For him, Tori was just one of the guys. But things escalated a bit in book #2 when he planted a wet kiss on her out of irritation (yeah, right).
The kiss that changed everything. Well, more like Tori changed. But not so much with Brody. The man was absolutely clueless. And it took him 10 months after the kiss to finally confront her about it. Ten. Months. After the much needed talk, he decided that he was actually attracted to her after all. So began their sexual affair. And sexual flings usually ends up into happily-ever-after nowadays.
A chier!!!!
Tori has had feelings for Brody since she first started working for the construction company he runs with his brothers but with no family of her own the Kent's quickly became important to her and she would never do anything to risk her relationship with Brody and his family. Brody has never been the type of guy to settle down though so as much as she loves him Tori knows that if anything happened between them she would end up broken hearted and alone again and that isn't something she is prepared to chance. But Brody hasn't been able to get Tori out of his head since they kissed at last year's Christmas party, he doesn't understand why she is going to such lengths to avoid him and he is desperate for the chance to prove to her how much she really means to him.
I can't believe that this is the first story I've ever read by Jaci Burton, I've heard so many good things about her writing in the past and at least now I can see what the fuss is about because I really enjoyed The Best Thing. This is the third story in the Kent Brothers series and I am definitely going to have to go back and read the previous books because I want more of the banter between Brody, Wyatt and Ethan - I just love this kind of family series. Tori is such a vulnerable young woman, she had a difficult upbringing and before meeting the Kent's she didn't know what it was like to have a family who cared about her. It isn't just Brody that she is in love with - she cares about his entire family and his parents and brothers mean everything to her. It was easy to see why she was so sceptical about starting a relationship with Brody, he has never done the relationship thing before tending to stick to one night stands or short affairs and she doesn't want to become the latest in a long line of women. I found it quite amusing that Brody had no idea of his reputation, he genuinely didn't have a clue that people considered him a bit of a man whore and was shocked when he found out. In spite of his reputation he hasn't left a string of broken hearts behind him, he never made promises to the women he dated and he isn't against the idea of a relationship - he just hadn't found the right woman, until Tori that is. He will do whatever it takes to prove how much Tori means to him and get her to take a chance on him. The Best Thing was a really great romance and one I thoroughly enjoyed, I'm looking forward to spending more time with the Kent brothers and am quite sad to know that this is the final book in the series because I would love to catch up with Brody and Tori in the future and see how they (and the other members of the Kent family) are getting along.
If you don’t expect different or unusual, this will satisfy. It’s contemporary romance feel good.
He and she work for the same company and are attracted to each other. She is reluctant to date him for a couple of reasons. The plot and dialogue are typical for this genre. But it’s enjoyable. It’s fun. And it provides some feel good emotions It’s about a third the length of a regular novel. I wasn’t insulted with anything. There is the formulaic fight/separation. She overhears him say something that was not true. But I liked that she confronted him right away about it. She told him why she was breaking up with him. Too many other authors would have the heroine run away and not say why. So I was pleased with this. I liked the way he groveled at the end. But his public declaration made me uncomfortable. I would have preferred he make a declaration to the two guys he initially commented to - not to all those strangers.

Tori has had a huge crush on Brody for years, but his womanizing ways always kept her back.
When Brody suddenly kisses her in the middle of an argument she panics, fearing that she'll lose her job and the family she's come to love when he moves on as he always does, and starts avoiding him for months, before he finally corners her to resolve their issues.
Brody is shocked when he learns what people think of him and realizes that they are not wrong. For once having a relationship doesn't make him want to run, but he'll have to convince Tori to give them a chance.
A moment of intense stupidity on his part almost ruins what turns out to be a great relationship between them, but he resorts to a grand gesture and finally reaches his own happily ever after.
All three Kent brothers' stories are short and sweet, with Christmas as the background helping to bring about happy endings.
This was only my seciond Jaci Burton story and the first time I met the Kent brothers. The Best Thing is the 3rd instalment in the trilogy, after Ethan and Wyatt have found love and wedded bliss this time it's Brody's turn to fall in love. The premise is that at last year's Christmas party Brody and Tori (their spitfire assistant and family friend) kissed, and after more than 10 months of Tori giving the brothers the cold shoulder they decide it's time Brody fixed the problem.
I found the small town and the characters very lovable, and though the Kent family tended to be quite overwhelming with their over-the-top meddling I found both the story and its characters charming and wouldn't mind revisiting them by reading the first two books in the series. ;-)
Tori and Brody were both nice characters, believable and real. Their chemistry and affection for each other was palpable and Jaci Burton knows how to write both sexy and sweet:
"[...] stray thoughts of Tori kept filtering through. Her laugh, the way she looked naked, her competitive nature when they’d played video games, or the soft way she snored when she’d fallen asleep while watching movies. He’d never realized how alone he had been until he had her with him all weekend, or how much he’d enjoyed spending time with her. Usually he was all about getting women out of his house. Now all he could think about was when he could get Tori back there."
I had two problems with this story:
- the first being that I found the setup premise hard to believe: that a person could stay bitchy and give the cold shoulder to not just a guy she has a crush on but at least 2 other people she cares for?
"[...] she’d been decidedly unhappy for almost a year now, ever since Brody had kissed her at the last company Christmas party."
I thought it was way too much for Tori to sulk and brood for almost a year and keep up her unhappy disposition. Also, why did Brody, his brothers and Tori's best friend let things stay this way for so long? Seriously, in real life after such a lengthy period of emo-PMSing there would be high probability of depression...
- and the final crisis, you know the big conflict that brings the angst into the story as to will they or won't they? And well I expected much more originality from the story and Jaci Burton than the conflict I got :-( Maybe the reason why I felt so let down by THE conflict was that it was exactly the same as in the first novella (We'll Be Home for Christmas by HelenKay Dimon)
And the same problem of the "too much time has elapsed" mentioned above emerged again at the conflict: after their big misunderstanding TWO WEEKS go by without the hero and heroine clearing the air!! Seriously, first he let 10 months go by before having "the talk" after their kiss, and now he let 2 weeks go by without explaining... I don't get it. They are both shaken up and miserable, and two weeks is a very long time when you have a broken heart and feel that the person you loved betrayed you. If a didn't clear the air in the 2 weeks following a fight I would (rightly!) think that he just doesn't care, so I just couldn't understand and accept why the delay was necessary...
Oh and yes, the biggest pet peeve of mine: the public declaration: I just don't get it why characters (and maybe some people) think that those things which are said in front of a public carry more weight and are truer than words whispered in private. I just don't get it. I much prefer a heartfelt, honest declaration than a she-bang with fanfare.
Verdict: The Best Thing was a delightful, fun and sexy small town romance with lovable characters and great chemistry between the hero and heroine. I had a few problems with the story which although didn't ruin completely my enjoyment of the story still manage to detract a bit from the dream star rating. But if you love public declarations and characters (a hero) who make mistakes, then I'm sure you'll enjoy The Best Thing.
Plot: 7/10 Characters: 9/10 Writing: 8/10 at times I felt the filling lines between the dialogues a bit brusque Ending 7/10 Cover: 9/10 - love it!
"You need to fix Tori. She's broken." This is the task Brody's brother's, Wyatt and Ethan, set before him. Since he and office manager Tori Lewis had shared a smoking hot kiss the year before at a Christmas party, everything had changed ~ what used to be fun ha/ha smart mouth had turned into straight up bitchiness towards all of them...and they were blaming HIM. And yeah, he'd known things had changed, and hadn't he tried to text, call, go by her place...but she'd just refused to talk to him? And he had NO idea why, as with with a kiss like that and woman like Tori he so wanted to pursue that line...
Tori had been in love with Brody since high school ~ but she also loved her job AND his family. His family had become like HER family, and NO way was she jeopardizing all that for reputed man whore Brody, no matter how crazy she was about him, no matter how much she missed their talks and jabs at one another...
This was such a FUN read! I loved that Brody was so freakin' clueless, and that Tori was just your everyday girl...just a great straight contemporary, feel good read celebrating family, friends to lovers and Christmas! Definent read!! I have to go back and read the other brother's stories as I somehow missed them...it's a great stand alone, but now I'm dying of curiosity!!
This third book in the series is a very classic contemporary romance, with nothing really new in the plot, nor in the characters. However it was nicely and convincingly written and I really enjoyed the time spent on reading it. Like for the first book in the series, the short format (around 100 pages) fit well with the story, nothing felt rushed, not much was overdone, except maybe Tori's doubts about Brody which were repeated one time too many, with almost exactly the same words. I liked that the conflict, leading to the unavoidable breakdown before reconciliation, came from external pressure. It made their situation feel constrained, driven by external forces and I really understood why it made him so uncomfortable. I was wondering how he would manage to apologize for what he had said and the grand gesture he came up with felt nice.
SO MAD that I didn't know this was book #3 in the series. I have done this multiple of times. GRR. Now I know the ending to book 1 & 2. Okay, so obviously these are HEA books; I'm not a dumb nut, I knew what would happen, but still. I like to read in order damn it >_<
Oh, uh, but otherwise the book was nice :P Very believable, nice pace for a short story. Well done, but then again, it's Jaci Burton :P OF COURSE it's well done. I mean, hello? Play by Play series anyone?! Oooh yeah! :0)
Cute and sexy H/h made this a fun read. Some clichés here and there - eavesdropping never leads to something good, ha! - but Jaci Burton's writing sold them to me.
Brody is the middle child in between oldest Wyatt and youngest Ethan and also the last one single. Last year he kissed their office manager and family friend at the company Christmas party and he can't think of anything else but her. He's known as a man whore, love 'em and leave 'em kind of guy and that doesn't set well when Tori throws that up in his face.
Tori has been in love with Brody since she was fifteen years old. Something's changed since that kiss and she can't decide if its for the better or for the worse. She wants nothing more then for Brody to sweep her off her feet and tell her that he wants her for always, but she knows that's not his style so she hides. She's afraid she'll lose him and his family, that have become her her family the last few years. When Brody confronts her about the way things have changed, she has to decide does she throw caution to the wind or does she protect her heart.
Watching these two dance around each other was great. The sexual chemistry they had was leaping off the pages. Sometimes thought meddling can be very bad thing and can send a relationship that's moving forward flying backwards at the speed of light. You should go and read about all three Kent brothers if you haven't yet. I know you won't be disappointed!
I really enjoyed all three of the Kent Brothers books. They were short and sweet and fun and sappy and I smiled a lot.
When thinking about the entire series, I admired the way Burton worked around people getting all bent about "instalove". These are novellas, they had to fall pretty fast, and making them all have history was genius. I liked that each book was separated by 1 year, as they all took place at Christmastime. This gave the past relationships time to grow, and treated the reader with an update.
In the last book (--sigh--) our playboy gets pinned down (finally). We already knew something was simmering between Brody and Tori since book 1, and they had known each other for years. The kiss at the previous Christmas party was a great set up for what would play out in this book. As always, get familial interactions and fun banter, but I must say it was the grand gesture that got me. Loved it!
Yep, that worked! I have liked all of the Kent brothers books and this was no exception! Brody was a bit of a man-whore, even his mother thought so, but he was really just waiting on the right girl. Or in this case waiting for the girl and him to be ready at the same time - they both had some growing up to do. Tori has been in love with Brody since she was a teenager, but too afraid to risk the first real family she has found in his brothers and parents, not to mention her job, to take a chance on him. He is not known for his long term relationships after all! When she finally quits fighting what they are both feeling, their chemistry heats up! He is struggling with the pressure from friends and family, she is struggling to trust and of course everything blows up. How he finally convinces her to give him another chance is pretty impressive and the end is oh so sweet!
2.5 stars -- definitely my least favourite of the 3 novellas of the Kent Brothers. It felt like it jumped into the story real quick, and I was left feeling a bit of disbelief at the characters -- they really went 10 months with a mean Tori?? It took them that long to say "enough is enough"?? So it started me off on the wrong foot. Then I wasn't really impressed with Tori herself, and her reasoning for behaving the way she was with everyone else. Brody I get, but what did everyone else do to deserve her apparent wrath?
And then they got together and some of the lines felt cheesy to me...and yes, I know, it's a Christmas novella. But I just found myself going "really?" a few more times than I would like.
And then it wrapped up quickly too. I don't know what to say, I just wasn't feeling this one...
Another wonderful Kent family read. Tori has had the hots for Brody since 15. Now at 26 she all but given up on him and his manwhoring ways. She thinks after the kiss that his eyes will be opened and he will finally see what's right there, when this doesn't happen something breaks in her. I really enjoyed her witty come backs and put downs from the first 2 books so it was kindof of bummer when those go missing when she breaks. Now it is up to Brody to fix her, which he sets out to do. Brody admits a truth to himself that he also changed with that kiss. It will be an uphill battle all the way to make Tori believe that he is ready to committ to a serious relationship. So sad to say goodbye to the loving Kent family.
This is the single most irritating narration I have ever heard. Really badly overdone. All conversations with women are done in really annoying sing song voices. Why? Nobody talks like this. It's like watching Sesame Street.
She's all over the place with which word to stress in a sentence. If it wasn't a short story I'd have had to switch the thing off, because any more of this awful audio and I'd have needed to launch my iphone out the window.
Fortunately, I have read this before and I know it to be an excellent story, otherwise I'd have thought it was awful. It really does kill me when a narrator destroys a good book.
Jaci Burton brings us The Best Thing, a return to the Kent Family and this time Bad-Boy, middle brother, Brody and Tori are hitting the sheets and maybe finally admitting the feelings they've had for each other for years. I happen to love the Kent Family and look forward to Jaci's Christmas novella every year. If you haven't caught up with the Kent Family, make sure to pick up Ethan and Wyatt's romances, All She Wants for Christmas and A Rare Gift.
I read the first few pages of this book and then returned it to get my money back. The premise is that this couple shared a scorching hot kiss a year ago, and ever since, the heroine has been in a noticeably bad mood. FOR A YEAR?!? Ridiculous. I'm not interested in immature characters whose odd behavior I'm supposed to find quirky and fun.
The banter between Tori and Brody is what I live for in romance books. They work together and are constantly getting on each other’s nerves – while being attracted to each other but saying and doing nothing about it until the heated kiss that happened at the company Christmas party in the previous book. It has driven a wedge between them, and Tori doesn't want to start anything with Brody thanks to his less than stellar reputation. But he has different plans and is more than willing to change for the right woman. Which was really adorable because he was trying so hard to show her how he felt.
I think it’s a bit silly that it took him ten months to fix the unpleasant situation he created, even if there were certain circumstances that made a relationship with Tori complicated. That’s what talking is for, which seemed to be forgotten a lot in this novella when important and difficult things came up. But of course, it all worked out in the end, and all three Kent brothers ended up with their own HEA for Christmas.
I couldn't put this book down and had to find out more about Tori and Brody (so cute that their names rhyme)
Despite my high rating of this book. I had alot of problems with TBT, the way that Brody's family treated him was appalling. They just kept saying they know how much of a man Whore he was and to protect Tori (a girl who's been involved with the family forever) over their own brother/son. It just kept being drilled into his head while at the same time they were telling him how perfect him and Tori are together but you better not hurt Tori like Tori was their daughter/sister and not him. And Tori was "insecure" as she said but in reality she was making excuses and drafting conclusions from no where much like how Wyatt did in book #2, must be the theme in order to create conflict. A weak way in my opinion.
Having had the first two books in the Kent Brothers series build up to it, it was great to finally hear Tori and Brody's story. It wasn't my favorite of the series, but I still very much enjoyed it. Tori and Brody's relationship has always been a bit antagonistic, but they enjoyed the banter. Since last year's Christmas party, however, Tori has changed. Brody's brothers, Ethan and Wyatt, blame him and charge him with "fixing Tori." In his effort to smooth out relations in the office, Brody comes to realize that Tori means much more to him than he had let himself believe. The book is HEA with no cliffhanger. The first two books in the series are not necessary for understanding this one, but I would definitely recommend them.
This book was just as good as the first in this series of novellas, which means it was also just fine. Nothing spectacular.
The writing is decent but the characters were just kind of there. Not bad or good, average. My complaints are: it seemed like Tori really had to do a lot of work for them to be together. Also, as for actual work, she had to “take the day off” of the office portion of the job in order to throw the big party. I hope that was just an oversight because she deserved extra pay for that. Also, I hated Brody’s over the top grand gesture. Maybe just be a grown up and make things right that way.
i have been on a roll rereading books i never reviewed or rated i guess.
the first half of this book did well with the tension even tho the expository dialogue was clunky as hell. but then they got together kinda blandly after all that tension and the energy and fun left the chat. i woulda been annoyed with all the nosy people too so i dont blame brody. and neither of em had a personality. also idk when this book was written but these young people sometimes talked like boomers
This story fell flat for me. Tori and Brady had a lot of chemistry and history. I wish their pasts had been more involved rather than the time they spent in bed. Brady isn't emotionally ready to handle a commitment to Tori and Tori was terrified to lose Brady's family if their relationship didn't work out.
