New York Times bestselling author Anne Stuart, writing as Kristina Douglas, delivers the fourth novel in the Fallen series—in a realm of fallen angels and ruthless demons, an eternal rebellion is brewing…
A rebel angel who lives outside the world of the Fallen, Cain makes his own rules. Now he’s returned to make trouble, and he sets his sights on the unreliably psychic Martha. She has no interest in getting romantically involved with Cain, especially when she can tell he has ulterior motives. But when a mysterious figure tries to kill Martha, she and Cain must work together to uncover the villain. The heat between Martha and Cain grows undeniable, even as chaos and disaster threaten the very existence of the Fallen.
"You're a very bad man," she murmured, resting her head on his shoulder as he tucked her against him. He smiled in the darkness. "I'm a very bad angel."
This series just gets better with each new book! Rebel is an amazing addition to The Fallen series, and as before we have the hot, bad boy, jerkish, gamma hero, perfect combination :)))
The story
The seer Martha knows Cain is coming, and he will bring trouble and destruction with him. And apparently sex too because her visions are full of R-rated clips of them having a great time between the sheets :DDD Everyone on Sheol is surprised and worried when Cain appears, because they know he hates them all. Still, no one knows that he is finally back to get his revenge against all the fallen angels, and the way to do it is through Martha. Cain decides to seduce her and use her for his goals, but it might just get him into a tricky situation, when he starts caring for her more than he should.
As for the story, I think this one might be my favorite from the series. Revenge has always been my favorite plot, and here it's done perfectly :) Some new things are revealed about the fallen angels, and I like where it is going :) Oh, and the teaser in the end about Lucifer!! OMG I seriously can't wait to read his book, I have a feeling it's going to be the best of them!!
Cain and Martha
Cain was sent to Earth by Uriel to show mankind about passion and sex, and he was the first one to fall in love. That ended badly when Uriel exacted his revenge on Cain and his woman, who was pregnant with his child. Now he is back, seeking revenge from all the angels because now they are all mated and happy, enjoying the things he was judged for by them all.
Martha is a widow of one of the fallen angels, that now has a place in Sheol as the seer. She has painful visions that aren't always easy to interpret, so she isn't sure about Cain, whether he is a true danger, or is it just her libido to blame for the hot dreams.
Cain sees a perfect opportunity to infiltrate the fallen angels through Martha, and he sets all his charms of seducing her, even though she can't stand him and well, doesn't like him at all :DD But she stands no chance against him :)))) The real trouble will start when someone tries to kill Martha, and Cain will have a difficult choice, to finish his revenge, or to protect Martha.
I have to say, I loved every single thing Cain says in this book. He is just so uber-seductive, has that dangerous aura around him, powerful, he is like a huge presence in the book, and you can feel it everywhere, the way he behaves, the way he talks, the way he seduces, the way he fights... *sigh* Seems like I love them gamma hero, I'll have to check out more books from Anne Stuart :))
I know this series isn't well known and popular, but I can't say how much I recommend it, especially from book 2 to this one :) All the heroes are jerkish types bad boys, the writing is great and the plots are always interesting :)) So go for it ;)
I know, I know, this story is supposed to be all about Cain...and it is. But for me, this book was all about Martha! I really like her and through all the prior books, I've really been drawn to her and was excited that she would get another chance at happiness...but with Cain?
Cain is a bad, bad boy and he likes it. After falling, he fell in love with a human and then had the most horrific things happen. He's now all about revenge...even if it's taken him hundreds of years. Then, he meets Martha and he cannot stop thinking about her and invading her dreams.
Sweet, almost innocent Martha does not know what to think of Cain. She's seen him coming from her visions and she's been dreaming about him, thinking that was safe but it's only amped up both their desires and lust until it's all consuming!
Their sexual encounters are quite steamy and Martha experiences things she never thought would be possible. I enjoyed seeing her grow as a person and a sexual being but I felt bad about her realizations about Thomas.
It was also great seeing Martha be validated with her visions. There were no prophecies to contend with and Martha wasn't some ancient goddess reincarnated. We just got to deal with a good person who wants to be a little bad and a bad person who's not really bad when it counts. And thankfully, Cain does come through with some "truths" for the Fallen that without them, things wouldn't have turned out the way they did.
I just wish there was more romance...don't get me wrong, the sex was great but I wanted Cain to "bend" a bit more although I did like how he called her "Miss Mary". I loved what happened at the end but I felt Martha didn't get shown that she was cherished enough and the ending left me wanting!
And besides Cain there is another bad guy we have to deal with. If you've read the other books, he shouldn't be a surprise. His feelings for Allie are a little creepy and I hope he doesn't come back and cause more problems.
I love all the other characters and how involved they were in this story. It was great seeing all the female's friendships grow. And it was amazing meeting the new character!
I have no idea who the next story will be about unless it's about a certain elusive someone that we only got a glimpse of at the end. I would definitely read it if it is!
Favorite quotes:
♥ "But for me you’re Miss Mary, lush and private and mine."
♥ “I love you, Miss Mary. I’m no good for you, but if you’ll have me, I’m yours. Forever.”
For me, this was the worst of the bunch so far. I could not stand Cain. He's manipulative, pushy, mocking, and just a jerk. I barely tolerated Martha. She's a whiny doormat. Cain has plans for something, we know not what, and the back and forth mocking of Martha and him trying to get her into bed, her resisting, then of course jumping in took up most of the book. We don't find out Cain's plan until the last 1/8th of the book. There's a big battle that only takes a few pages and I'm still not sure of what the point was though some new things were revealed.
The whole time I'm waiting for the redemption scene, where Cain and Martha express love, bond, blah blah and it happens, at the end. Takes up no more than a couple pages and barely skims the surface of emotion.
The simple fact is, if I can't stand both characters, the story doesn't work for me, though in this case the story was poor as well.
There is a hint of what the next book may be about and I hope it's better than this one.
"Rebel" may be the fourth offering in the Fallen series, but the story found between it's pages needs no help standing alone. This story of beautiful bodies, secret agendas, meetings of the mind, hearts redeemed, and sinfully sensual sex, is heaven sent to say the least. Martha is a strong but scarred powerful psychic, whose powerful gift to 'read the future' has help to save the lives of the fallen angels and their mates, who inhabit the secret world of Shoel. When her visions warn her of the coming of Cain, a powerful angel returning to Shoel after fleeing the blame for the death of one of his fellow fallen. She knows that she must warn Fallen leader, Raziel. What she can not tell Raziel however, is that she has been having hot, passionate, and all too real dreams involving herself and the Dark Angel.
Martha is a very likable character who is going through quite a rough time. She is alone in the world of Shoel, surrounded by bonded pairs of angel and humans, constantly reminded that her mate Thomas is dead. The only reason that she has to has to go on is her job as 'seer' for the Fallen...and lets just say that her belief in what she sees has been a bit less than complete.
Cain is the disgraced 'bad boy' returned home. Marked as trouble and trusted by no one, Cain is the ultimate bad boy and perfect for Martha in more ways than one. The chemistry between these two is evident from the start, though it is never forced to the forefront of the story. There is a fully fleshed plot involving a murder and making way for a coupe by Uriel, enemy of the Fallen. The passion is always the star of this read however, and sure to keep pages turning. This is s book that takes it's reader by surprise. Just when you think that you have all the answers, there is yet another twist that makes you have to start at square one.
My favorite fallen angels series so far. Cain is sex on acid he will make you cry and beg for it. LOVE.Instant revamp I have'nt done that since Fifty. I love when you cant figure out a plot, a person or what they are going to do. Just sit and enjoy the ride.
Cain my description above says it all. He also is charming, teasing and a killer with an agenda to get vengeance. He targets Martha the mouse. Martha is a widow who is a seer. She thinks she is nothing and her visions are unimportant. He always calls her Mary just to annoy I love it! Cain hates the fallen because they stood by while Uriel evil person killed his pregnant wife and he came home to get revenge. What he doesn't realize is that Uriel froze them and they couldn't so he becomes a rebel set out to prove the fallen are not what they think. They can take blood from others they can walk through fire and get pregnant. I love his entrance and departures they are epic, his fighting and anger, he is fire he is sex and all a male should be and he comes to life. Speaking of life I love how the Author makes Martha want to live and opens her eyes to sex as wanting life and to live since she was attacked by Metator a, another evil angel, and almost died. Cain doesn't relent he is who he is all the way to the end. Great part when Martha tells him she loves him then he betrays her. I just love him all the way around Cain is going into my top 5 list. Did I mention how much I love dream sex, mind fucks hahhahahaha!!
I had been looking forward to Cain's story since finishing the last book. Not bad, an enjoyable read, predictable ending. Cain was an ass, hot nonetheless and I liked Martha! Demon is still my favourite in this series.
I cannot express my love for this book, by far my favourite in the series... Not just because of Cain... I mean of course it's because of Cain but also Martha. I didn't really care for Martha before, I didn't particularly like her either; which made me mad when I found out she was in the last book. But nevertheless keep reading to find out what I liked and disliked! (I have nothing bad to say about this book btw)
So...Martha, where do I begin? She's quiet and pretty much average, she's cute of course (so is every fictional girl) and has special abilities.. There's nothing particularly different about her or unique, But Cain being a sexy rebel and all, I can definitely dig their lil thing going on, she's good- pure and kind, which is everything Cain is not, besides kind- I did enjoy him rather too much.. Unlike the others he's unique- he actually has a personality and is sweet as fuck to her! Instead of a grumpy and rude stubborn fallen angel, which pretty much sums up the others, he made my heart literally melt. He's drop dead gorgeous and I'm not just being literal, he really is heart shattering, the tension between the two was UNDENIABLE, like I had to turn my fan on full blast to cool the Fuck down! THE SEX BLEW MY FUCKING ORGANS OUT HE IS HOT GUYS! His attitude is so fucking sexy and they way he treats Martha makes me want to devour the book until it's a part of me... I know I know... Some might think I'm being over the top, but really, I'm just telling the truth... I NEED A CAIN!!!! Pls find me a Cain:( Kristina Douglas is my god (Anne Stuart) she really knows how to make my insides blow up, I would pray to her daily to GIVE ME ANOTHER BOOK' I just can't believe after 4 BEAUTIFUL MASTERPIECES it's finally over:'(
WHY SHOULD YOU READ IT? Well besides it being a roller coaster to near death, it really is worth a try, even if you don't like Angels and shit, you can't go wrong with a god-like fallen angel who literally turns your knickers inside out...
FINALLY.... THANK YOU ANNE STUART FOR CHANGING MY LIFE AND BRINGING THESE GORGEOUS MEN INTO MY HEAD!
BEST SERIES AND BOOK I HAVE EVER- EVER! READ
NOW THAT IM DONE... BUY THE SERIES NOOOOOOOOOOOW!!
(May) I was somewhat dreading reading this, since Martha did not impress me in the last few books. I admit, I ended up really liking her. Before this, she's been portrayed as a dishrag, a woman who barely takes up any space in the background, who was just there, boring and unimportant. Let into her thoughts, we discover that she is in fact quite an interesting character - a bit more of her backstory on earth would have been good, but we still discover more about her life with her deceased husband Thomas, as well as her imperfect visions, her fears, and her drab view of her life and her future. Enter quintssential Anne Stuart bad boy Cain - one of the Fallen, who was the first to fall in love and mate with a human woman, starting the downfall of the Angels. For centuries, he's been seethingly angry at the Fallen, blaming them for doing nothing when Uriel killed Cain's woman and unborn baby. He has returned, planning on destroying Azizal who was the leader at the time. Martha catches his eye and he decides to toy with her as a both a pleasant diversion and a tool to help him destroy Azizal as well as fight Uriel's army. The relationship between Cain and Martha reminded me of two other couples from AS's books - Ritual Sin and Nightfall. I loved taking a break from the Darkness - but can't wait to go back and rescue Lucifer!!
This book unfortunately didn't meet my expectations which is too bad since I really loved the last one and was really interested in the premise of this one. I still enjoyed it enough, and plan on continuing the series, but ultimately this one fell short. My primary issue was with regards to Cain and Martha's relationship and how they dealt with their respective pasts.
Individually, I really liked both characters: Martha, the widow, seer, and survivor, who is also always seemingly calm, cool, and collected; and Cain, the charming trickster, rebel, troublemaker, playboy, and angel with a score to settle. But together, I didn't believe them as much as I would have liked, and I think that's because their "relationship" felt way too casual for 99% of the book. It just didn't progress the way I tend to like it in these books. Both of them have tragic moments in their pasts that have really shaped who they are now, and yet they never dealt with or spoke about their issues together. It irked me that they never looked beyond the surface and peeled back the layers when they were together.
Anyways, besides that, I enjoyed revisiting the secondary characters and stepping back into this world. It's too bad it didn't meet my expectations but it was still good.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
“So you want us to accept that we have spent countless millennia believing a lie?” Raziel snapped in a voice like a whiplash. “Yes.” Cain’s own voice was cool and controlled. “You tried this once before, the last time you graced us with your presence. You insisted we could walk through fire, and Ezekiel was fool enough to believe you. He died screaming.” “Because he didn’t believe. Uriel’s curse is nothing but brainwashing. The Higher Power commanded us to become blood-eaters, and there’s nothing we can do about that. But the rest of it is nothing but lies. We are impervious to fire. Our women can drink blood as well and suffer no harm, only lasting life. They can bear children...
4 stars for suffering heroine thoughts and doubts, 5 stars for unusual story ending, and for interpretation biblic events in such different ways.
Cain... Oh Cain... How I hated thee. You are very bad man... But I'm so happy that you are so smart and know how to throw a huge ass curve ball in this crazy ass angel world!! Loved this book!!! Ended up loving every single thing about Cain. I wish I could have more of him. So glad Miss "Mary" has her happy ending and finally getting some good ass! Can't wait for the next book, just keeps getting better and better. Going back to the darkness, so I'm sure it's going to be a total mind f*^k of a book.
This book was my favorite but I was getting nervous with only 4% left and I still didn't know wth was gonna happen with Cain and Marthy! I loved how a lot of secrets came out in this one we finally got some good answers. I am just sick of each book having a battle and someone almost dies and then they get brought back and they win. I want them to form there badass army and go kick Uriel's gray gew ass. Lol but I'm in love with these characters and I am ready for the next book ASAP!
I really liked this installment of The Fallen series!! It was the best so far. I enjoyed reading about the manipulative, scheming, revengeful, sexy bastard that is Cain! Did I mention sexy?? He has a way with words and he easily gets under Miss Mary's skin....loved it! Yes, you know the outcome of their relationship but the journey was fun.
Martha has seen in a few previous visions that a fallen angel is coming. She doesn’t know when, she just knows his name is Cain, and that they become lovers. Cain shows up among the fallen in a very spectacular way. None of the fallen like or trust Cain. He is a sneaky and conniving angel with vengeance on his mind. Cain planes to use Martha and her bad visions to help him get revenge on the other fallen, but he ends up liking Martha more than he expects. There is a trader living among the fallen and he/she tries to kill Martha. There are a lot of things that the fallen have been told that can kill them, but Cain knows the truth. Now he is trying to get the other fallen to believe him in order to survive the upcoming war with heaven. I hope there are more books coming in this series.
I'm so sad that this is the last book. I'm not ready to leave Sheol and the Fallen. I need more books in this series STAT!
I have loved every FHC and every stubborn fallen angel in this series. The love scenes are so well written that I feel like I need to hide the book under my mattress when I'm not reading it!
I highly recommend this series! I am also begging the author to pick up this series again and take us back to Sheol! We still have to find Lucifer, and their are many fallen still without mates, so there is no shortage of material! Pleeeeeaaassseee!
of all the fallen, it think i liked Cain the most, especially because he was sent to earth to teach humanity of something so sinful.
at first i was kinda worried about him because he does have a motive and it felt like nothing will change his mind. and also, he can get inside another person's mind so...yeah.
i'm glad how this turned out. and i am hoping for Lucifer's book now please, thanks. :)
This book left many unanswered questions and cliff hangers at the end as is expected with a book in a series. However, I have not been able to find the next book in the series and as this book was published in 2013 I am not sure there will be another book. So if you do not like series left hanging take that into consideration. I did enjoy the story and characters.
It was good, but not as good as books 1 & 3 (I have book 2 on the way from ThriftBooks.com ). I think it was the self analysis that bothered me.. seemed like too much. Or maybe that it took too long even though in real life it takes months & years to understand your individual hang ups. 🤷🏻♀️
I really enjoyed this series, and I am disappointed this is the last book especially since it doesn’t feel like the over arching story had a conclusion. My biggest complaint about the book is the changing between first and third person.
I would love for there to be more books in this series. Wishful thinking!
It is such a great series that I find it difficult to rate below a four-star.... But it is a bit strange focusing on a potential enemy in the romance league. However, things turn out okay.... Lots of action and some dubious romance. Hoping there are more books in the series to answer a few questions and tie-up some lose ends.
I'm desappointed though that there is noother book in this series it fells like there could be more books in it because what about Lucifer, what about Uriel, what about the other fallen in Sheol Imean common really?????????????????
