Joanna Cole, who also wrote under the pseudonym B. J. Barnet, was an author of children’s books who teaches science.
She is most famous as the author of The Magic School Bus series of children's books. Joanna Cole wrote over 250 books ranging from her first book Cockroach to her famous series Magic School Bus.
Cole was born in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in nearby East Orange. She loved science as a child, and had a teacher she says was a little like Ms. Frizzle. She attended the University of Massachusetts and Indiana University before graduating from the City College of New York with a B.A. in psychology. After some graduate education courses, she spent a year as a librarian in a Brooklyn elementary school. Cole subsequently became a letters correspondent at Newsweek, and then a senior editor for Doubleday Books for Young Readers.
A large variety of children's poems. Some I well-remember from my childhood including:
one of my favourites: "The Swing" "... Up in the air I go flying again, Up in the air and down!" as well as "The Purple Cow" and "Adventures of Isabel"
There were also "silly" poems (my favourite kind) including one that I used to read to my kids: "Baby's Drinking Song" - "Sip a little Sup a little From your little Cup a little ...." and some that were new to me like: "The Little Elf" and "Harvey Always Wins."
But also, many, that even as an adult, don't make any sense
This mix of old and new poems provides a poem for every occasion. I have seen this book be used for an introduction to poetry, where a poem was read out everyday for the school year. The children enjoyed it so much that if it was their birthday they were able to choose another. The poems range in complexity allowing every child to access a variance according to their preferred topic/ occasion. Children will be able to magpie structures, language, themes and not run out.
We read this book during our homeschool morning time. Overall we all really enjoyed it. I don’t love how several of the last poems were sad ones, I’d rather end on a high note. There was one poem that used the word “nigger” (used well and in a negative context to describe a little black boy’s experience in a city) and it gave me the opportunity to have a lesson with my mixed race kids, so that was a neat, organic way to incorporate a lesson on segregation.
I absolutely treasured this book as a child and wow! who would of thought I would find it here on Goodreads! What luck! Now to get my hands on the actual hardcover. I vaguely recall the beautiful illustrations. Would love to share with my kids!
I adore these poems even now, because they give me little rhymes to read over and over. I smile at the alliterations and nonsensical bits knowing that to a kid, these could become a memory too precious for words. The collection is dreamy and whimsical and all and all peachy keen.
This Book of poems has a very great selection. I read poems and Rhymes from this book periodically to my day care children. There are a variety of poems and this book for you to choose from. I can honestly say that my children love when I read poems to them. As a childcare provider I feel it is very important that we introduce poems to children at a young age so that when they grow up they will become great readers. This book is great for children in preschool through elementary. This book contains over 200 old and new poems for to read periodically. The poems are fun and easy to memorize. When I read to my children I always find something fun to do with them such as using props from a poem to help the memorize and visually understand what the poem was about. If I had to choose a book of children's poetry, this would definitely be the one. I would recommend this book for children of all ages to read. This book would also make a great birthday gift. This book is inexpensive and I am going to research this author to find similar books as this one.
The selections of poems were very good. This book would be great to read to young children. I think it's important that children be read poetry in addition to prose stories. Ideally, children who have poetry read to them will grow up into adults who read more complex poetry on their own, and then return to simple verse to pass on in turn to their children or students.
I enjoyed reading this one. There were all different kinds of poems small or big ones they were also categorized which was nice as well and there were some ones that I remember from when I was a kid so I really enjoyed that as well.
Poetry is my favorite thing to read so undoubtedly I loved this book. It's full of great children's poetry and it's great for all grades (1-5). Children can be taught evaluating using poetry (what's the author's purpose or message being conveyed)?
This was an amazing book of poetry! It has hundreds of different poems and rhymes that could be used for almost anything! There are some new poems and poems that I have read before. Definitely recommend this book!
A gift from my grandmother, I remember reading this book avidly when I was little. It's a great book to revisit as an adult but even greater for children, of course!
