Janet grew up in the wide open spaces of rural Montana and now lives in the urban spaces of Pasadena, California. She's used both of these locations in her books. Her Dry Creek, Montana series numbers over twenty novels now and her Pasadena books, The Sisterhood of the Dropped Stitches, number four.
FUN! FUN! FUN! This is the first Janet Tronstad "Dry Creek" series book I've read. It won't be my last! Who couldn't love a romance that starts with the heroine awakening to find Prince Charming standing outside her window in a tuxedo. And her window is on her family's Redfern Ranch in a tiny town of Dry Creek, Montana. I loved the heroine Nicki and the hero Garrett (who is a trucker when he's not Prince Charming). So many delightful touches, such as the old men sitting around the stove at the general store reading Women's World! FUN! FUN! FUN!
A Hero for Dry Creek is a 2003 Love Inspired. To find a current Janet Tronstad's delightful romantic Dry Creek comedies, try

I usually love dry creek books but this guy was way too obsessed with sex Not what i expect in a love inspired book. plus the characters just were not that likeable
A very different spin on meeting a prince charming on a ranch when it was winter. It was hilarious at times, but sure not a favorite Love Inspired book.
I picked this book from the shelves of a school library. It's a quick, clean read, decently written and edited. The point of view switches randomly from Nicki (the female love interest) to Garrett (the male love interest), with viewpoints of side characters (Chrissy and Reno) inserted here and there. It's pretty obvious from the start where the book is headed.
When Nicki is around nine (best I can tell), her mother abandons the family to pursue a dancing career in Vegas. So Nicki is raised by her devastated father, who regularly dumps her off at church but never attends himself. Twenty-some years later, the mother comes back to say she's sorry (she's dying of cancer and doesn't know that her husband Charles had died). Garrett, Nicki's love interest, is the mother's chauffeur-of-the-moment. The mother's personality is initially portrayed as a shallow, high-maintenance rich girl but is then uncovered to become a loving mother who organizes and pulls off a successful community dinner (not a believable change). The "surprises" about the real reasons her mother left are chalked up to Nicki being young and naive and subconsciously suppressing good memories about the mother who abandoned her (still not believable).
I didn't find much spiritual depth in the book; mostly there's a prayer attempt when trouble arises, a faux marital counseling session with the pastor, and after she's fallen in love, the wonderful realization that she's been wrapped in God's love after all.
The book is largely a blow-by-blow record of Nicki and Garrett's vacillating emotions and mushy feelings. Most of the story takes place within two days. By page 60, hardly two hours of the story had passed. I didn't learn much from the book, but the author's portrayal of the life of a ranch girl in Montana seemed believable, and the Dry Creek community seemed charming.
I loved this story by Janet Tronstad. Ever wonder if a fairy tale could come true? Just ask Nicki Redfern! She wakes up one morning and thinks she sees Prince Charming outside her window. Prince Charming, aka Garrett Hamilton, is acting as a chauffeur for someone close to Nicki. This person will bring back hurtful memories for Nicki. Can she come to peace with her past and give up her independence? Can Garrett give up Big Blue and his “on the road” lifestyle? Read this story and see how God can use a fairy tale, a truck driver, and the past to forge a loving, happy-ever-after, God-led future when you trust God. Nicki’s mother left when she was young. She never knew why. Now is her chance to find out what happened since her mother has come back. Can she understand why her mother did what she did? Can she find forgiveness in her heart? Will she find true love with Garrett? Everyone will enjoy reading this book. A touch of western, inspirational, lots of humor and romance, you won’t want to put this book down once you start it! A Hero For Dry CreekJanet Tronstad
Dry Creek, Montana is always a delightful place to visit, which is one reason I love reading Janet Tronstad's books. A quaint small town where everyone knows everyone else, it has a true sense of community that is endearing. A Hero For Dry Creek is funny, whimsical, and romantic in a sweet way. This is the type of book you pick up when you just want to laugh and feel good, but it also has a depth to it under the surface, as commitment, forgiveness, and compromise are covered. Nikki and Garrett are delightful, and there are also a couple of characters you won't like so well (which is probably the author's intent.)
Garrett Hamilton has been sent to protect rancher Nicki Redfern, whose runaway mother has returned to Dry Creek ostensibly to apologize for stealing from the church. There is a subplot about Chrissy and Jared, who cheats on her, that makes little sense and adds nothing to the story. People here continually say and do stupid things in the name of plot advancement but, as with other Dry Creek tales, there's little plot to be had: only characters wandering from scene to scene. After sitting through this and "A Rich Man for Dry Creek", I would be willing to chip in to purchase some college-level writing lessons for Tronstad.
the DRY CREEK series by Janet Tronstad, is WONDERFUL.....hard to believe that someone could think of all this excitement to write about! I have read most all, if not all, so far of the series and every one is just as good, if not better, than the one before. If you like to read, and dont know what to start on, take it from me, you will not be sorry to get the Dry Creek series. Thanks Janet, for sharing your wonderful talent with your fans.
I enjoyed this more than the last few books in the series because it didn't just retell the same story from a different point of view, it took place a little bit after the last few books. It was a little unrealistic in that Garrett and Nicki fell in love and got engaged in a period of about two days but while reading the book it seemed like it took longer than that.

This book is better written than most "Love Inspired" books that I've read. The plot is simple but well-written; the characters are fully-developed for such a short book, and the writing style is engaging. This is a book I could recommend to my teenaged granddaughters.
Garrett was doing a friend a favor when he brought Lillie to Dry Creek. When Nicki first sees him, he is in a tux acting as a chauffeur for Lillie. He doesn't know Nicki and Lillie have a connection. Both have trust issues.
