Since 1836, children have been delighted by the McGuffey Readers' exotic adventures, exciting stories, beautiful poems, and funny fables. This companion volume was revised in 1879 to conform in orthography, pronunciation, and spelling to the latest edition of Webster's Unabridged Dictionary. The Eclectic Spelling-Book was designed to teach students the English language not by appealing merely to memory, but by associating each lesson with some principle of sound, meaning, or accent.
William Holmes McGuffey (September 23, 1800 – May 4, 1873) was an American professor and college president who is best known for writing the McGuffey Readers, one of the nation's first and most widely used series of textbooks. It is estimated that at least 122 million copies of McGuffey Readers were sold between 1836 and 1960, placing its sales in a category with the Bible and Webster's Dictionary.
I picked this book up thinking about helping my kids become better spellers and for some other reasons. It was everything I hoped it would be, though I didn't get a chance to actually let my kids use it to improve their spelling (library due dates come so soon). However, if my kids are really struggling I might purchase it.
Omg, this one is FILTHY with pencil markings! It was very obviously well-used by many spelling students over the years. The earliest inscription is from 1896.
