As an historical document this is a fascinating piece, having been written in 1909, just a few years after Sissi´s death.
Although the tone of the book is clearly one of love/devotion to its subject, if you have some patience and some time, its worth going through it and picking up tiny little details about the Empress in her everyday life and her interactions with the world around her.

Irma was Sissi´s last lady in waiting, literally, for she was there in Geneva that day and gives her account of those final hours right at the end of the book.
She is clearly - symptom of the times and her position no doubt - highly complementary of both Sissi and Emperor Franz Joseph, who was still alive at the time of the publishing of this book.

However, and bear in mind this is merely my personal opinion, regardless of all the love, you also realize she was aware of Sissi´s many "quirks, phobias and weird habits" ... she was not "the dumb following the blind", she was a woman grateful for her position and with privileged access to the empress who got to see all the good and the bad - and simply decided that one outweighed the other...remaining with the empress till the end (and certainly keeping some of her secrets after that).
This one is partial, yes, but totally worth it if you wanna form as clear a picture as possible of the woman behind the myth.

I got my book in french, from Amazon France, frankly don't know if an english translation exists, but if your french is fluent enough that you are confortable reading - get your hands on a copy of this one, you will no doubt be surprised!

I have only read some random excerpts from it, mostly the part regarding the sad date of September, 10, 1898, and I think I would only recommend it. The style might seem a bit sentimental, but I think it is due to the time it was written. The account of the last hours from Elisabeth's life is moving indeed, I was moved almost to tears reading. It's surely a valuable sourse for Irma Sztaray was close to Elisabeth's every day activities in the last years of her life and was the most important eye-witness of her last hours on the earth.
