Set in a Lyons Corner House in London, this is the third compelling novel in the series set against the backdrop of the Second World War.
The war is progressing for the Nippies, the girls who work at the Lyons Corner House in Marble Arch. With the air raids, rationing and blackouts, life no longer has the carefree attitude it used to have. But new pain and pleasure await as everyone decides what effort they can make towards victory.
Jo yearns for Nick, but the burns he sustained when he was shot down are life-changing and need the new procedure of plastic surgery. Will their marriage ever go ahead? And does Jo want it to? She loses herself in her new role as lumberjill, one of the women hewing timber for the war effort.
Meanwhile, Phyl has been selected, along with some other trusted Nippies, for secret work. Far from family and friends, she works with munitions and tries to forget her desire to be a Wren. Her husband is far away but she never loses faith that one day they will be reunited...
Donna Thomson was born in Gosport, near Portsmouth Harbour, England, UK. Growing up during the terrifying years of the Blitz in a two-up, two-down terraced house, the youngest of four, she aspired to be a writer from an early age.
As a young woman she worked in the Civil Service and moved to Devon to be near her sailor husband. They had a son and a daughter. When the marriage ended, she and her two children moved to the Midlands, where she happily married again to her second husband. After living in the Lake District for twelve years, she finally moved back to Devon, and now lives in a village on the edge of Dartmoor. She lost her son Philip in 2008, and has two grandchildren. A keen walker and animal-lover, she now has a dog and three ginger cats to keep her busy, along with a wide range of hobbies she enjoys.
She started signing her romance novels as Donna Baker and Nicola West, now she also writes as Lilian Harry (inspired by the first names of her grandparents). Among her works are historical novels, romances and even two books giving advice on how to write short stories and novels.
The final part of the trilogy - it felt just like putting on your favourite old slippers! Catching up with all the characters from the first two books, through the final years of World War II. Lots of unexpected endings but very satisfying in the final chapters. Sad it's over!
In this, the third and final volume in Lilian Harry's "Corner House Girls" series, the girls and their families move wholeheartedly into doing their bit for Britain's war effort.
Harry's cast of characters is so large that we can see a little bit of just about every operation on the home front. Secret munitions work, nursing, forest clearance, mining and of course air raid rescue all get their time on the page.
Once again, Lilian Harry doesn't hesitate to let us get close to characters, and then snatch them away. Nobody is safe, no matter how beloved they have become over the course of a series. It's what's great about her, and what can be frustrating. I find myself saying "no! I loved that person!" But then, that's what happened in the War itself, wasn't it?
Each book in this series was well researched and historically accurate. I enjoyed getting the “home front” perspective that is not as often written about in novels. The characters were endearing to get to know and I appreciated how readers got a perspective from all ages, genders and classes. The writing of these books was like none I’ve ever encountered before. An all present narrator who sometimes commented on the scene in general or gave historical notes but who also described the drama of each character could at times be confusing but was also interesting. I liked when the narrator broke narration to give details on specific topics to provide explanation - such as the buzz bombs. Overall, an excellent period series.
I really enjoyed this book and the series. This third and final book was the best of the three. I was lucky that I was able to get all three books in one as it's best to have the background stories of the characters to pull it all together and get the most out of this remarkable story of history, courage, compassion, coming of age, understanding, love and yes, humor.
third in a trilogy women friends who worked together at a Corner House cafe. How they coped with family, loss, danger during WWII. Interesting descriptions of London. I read the second in this series and was glad to find the third.
Have read all 3 books of the corner house girls. Enjoyed every page of them from start to finish Have held my breath giggled and cried Would recommend to read them definitely ❤️❤️
What an amazing book I couldn’t put it down the best one I’ve read this year it made you feel like you were there with them it made you feel happy and sad at times but so real
Just loved this series. I am glad that the whole 3 books jelled so well and we didn't loose any of the story during the 3 books. It was a awesome series and I am pleased I read it.
My friend told me to read this as she enjoyed it so much and she alo told me she cried multiple times. I must say it didn't affect me as much as that however I still enjoyed it. I liked the concept of the whole story line as I just think it was adorable and still makes me go all tingly thinking about it. I don't know why I didn't cry, I guess I just thought it was more sweet that upsetting. Watching the film made me tear up but I preferred the book as it was more detailed and I could empathise with Holly. Also, Gerard Buttlers Irish accent? Just no. Definitely recommend this to people who like straight up romance books or someone who just needs cheering up a little.
life is for living, holly realises -but it always helps if there's an angel watching over you. Gerry nd Holly are ideal for each couple a perfect soul mates. The guiding notes helps out Holly to enter into her new life without Gerry . she becomes braver than ever before. And the contribution of sharon and Holly ’s family is also noteworthy. .. loved to read this book , to know the real phase of living life. And very touchy and emotional book.
Please don't be put off by my review, it's just I could not relate to the book so it didn't really resonate with me. Again, I am a teenager who has NOT experienced losing a loved one, especially a spouse. The entire thing felt a bit slow to me, but I reckon it's an excellent choice for those who have experienced Holly's situation.
Maybe it'll be one of those books where I'll read again in my mid thirties and sob as I clutch it to my chest because I can relate to it so well.
The last of the three books from Lilian Harry's Corner house series. It follows the lives of the corner house girls and the war how it changes their lives. Not how I thought it would end, full of the unexpected
My favourite book ever. Read it a few years before they made the movie. The book goes so much further into their relationship. The book is beautifully written and a real heart string puller. Makes you really believe in hope....
amazing. I wanted to kill nick and hug josh constantly. I cried when etty died and wanted to revive the person that killed her so i can kill him in the most painful way possible.
