This enchanting historical romance is set in Vienna in the 1800s and centers around a woman who is building her career as a pianist. This book is special for it’s incredibly detailed descriptions of Vienna and rural Austria, especially during the summer. I highly recommend this long forgotten gym to those of you who enjoy history, music, and the interplay between people are very different classes in society. As a sidenote, for those of us who are blind and choose to read this book through the national Library service, it is red well by Patricia Beaudry. It is available now in the bard catalog.
After having read this book many, many times many years ago, I wanted to reread this original-language edition from the Internet Archive while on vacation in Vienna. I walked the streets mentioned in the book—Schonlaterngasse, Herrengasse, and the Graben—and visited St. Stephen's Church. I researched the places mentioned in the book, linked to Viennese legends, and rediscovered the historical references. This is something I've always loved about this author's novels: they transport you to distant places and bring historical events to life, whether it's Culloden in Scotland, Tsarist Russia, Napoleonic France, or, as in this case, Austria during the 1847 uprisings. As a teenager, I learned a lot from her books, and it's always a pleasure to reread them.
This book feels like stepping into a storm wrapped in velvet. Castles, power, secrets, tension so thick you can taste it. Everyone’s hiding something, everyone’s calculating, and I’m just sitting there like “trust no one.” It’s dramatic without being chaotic. Dark without being edgy for no reason. And the atmosphere? Chef’s kiss. I could literally see the cold stone walls and feel the pressure in every conversation. Did it make me anxious? Yes. Did I eat it up anyway? Also yes.
__ THE PLOT__ In the summer of 1847, Lisa Heron comes to Vienna and is plunged into a divided world of music, fashion—and revolution. As she becomes involved with the elegant Julian von Falkenburg and the mystery that shrouds his past and his home, Castle of Eagles, Lisa makes a shattering discovery.
__MY OPINION __A love story, where the vicissitudes of the protagonist is accompanied by the description of the places and atmosphere of a golden Vienna full of joy, between music, dances and traditional events in the first part of the book and subsequently shocked and completely transformed by the revolutionary movements of the people (against Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria and especially the Chancellor von Metternich, who presented himself as the leader of anti-nationalism).
I liked it very much ! it's a read suitable for those looking only for distraction and entertainment, without any other pretension, but it's really very nice and pleasant to read.
This book was a delightful surprise! The writing is superb, and the pacing is intense—I couldn’t put it down! However, the storytelling approach was occasionally frustrating; the frequent spoilers about upcoming events took away some of the suspense, and it felt a bit too heavy-handed at times.
Despite that, the story is solid, and Julian is one of the best male characters I’ve come across. While I didn’t love how some parts felt rushed, and the spoilers took away from my enjoyment, it was still a good read overall. This is the kind of book you’d enjoy at the beach or in a cozy café.
Romanzo senza infamia e senza lode...
