Readers are exhorted to spread peace. The author's lovely photographs for National Geographic Magazine add visual inspiration.

And this Goodreader agrees: For children, it could be important to ask them to:

* "Share your SMILE."

* And to "Lend a HAND."

Altogether I did find the content of this book to be a little thin, a little glib.

But I'll still rate this book at FIVE STARS. Why scoff at a sincere effort to bring more peace into this world?

Pictures of people around the world smiling, playing, studying, and helping one another, accompanied by spare words about how simple gestures can contribute to peace. Text at the back of the book provides more detailed information about where each picture was taken and what it depicts.

The photographs are full of joy and movement. Every page brings joy. I love the ending where the author shares where each photo was taken. "Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding," Albert Einstein said. Understanding is what all of these photos are meant to teach.

Brown, Monica. Pele King of Soccer. Rayo, 2009.

Pele, once a young boy hungry and full of hope, turned into one of the world’s most famous soccer players. Monica Brown brings light to his story through a child-friendly version of his life and the events leading up to his soccer career. She tells how the once, poor and hungry boy, turned his passion and talent for the game of soccer into a career. No one would have expected this original barefoot player to be the first man in history to score one thousand goals and lead Brazil in winning the World Cup. His story is truly inspirational and he used his talent and passion to encourage young children to pursue their dreams in playing soccer by becoming an ambassador for the game of soccer.

Classroom Connections: This book would be great to use after finding out students interest in soccer. It will allow for them to connect to the material and learn about a famous man who turned his life for the better. The lesson of not letting life get you down and the power of pursuing your dreams is extremely evident throughout. This would be a great way to begin the school year and have students do a report or project on their hopes and dreams just like Pele. This would also be a great book to use if there are English Language Learners. It will allow them to feel a part of the classroom and provide them with the same material as the rest of the class.

Kerley, Barbara. A Little Peace. National Geographic Society, 2007. 32 p. Gr. PK-2.
What is peace? Peace is many things! It is giving your hand, giving a smile, one little wave, or one little word, “Hello.” This can happen on the street, in your home, on the beach, during a sport, or during celebration. Peace is more than freedom from disturbance, it’s giving your love and heart to others, whether you know them or not! We could use a little more peace everywhere, around the world!

Barbara Kerley’s book, A little Peace is a great multicultural photo documentary to use in the classroom. This could be used in a book set that defines the peace that the whole room will be expected to display throughout the year. This could also be used in a set for a world peace theme. Students could write their own definition of peace and the teacher could display this on a bulletin board that would stay up for the whole year. This bulletin board will then include words that relate to peace, love, and friendships. Students could also write the classroom rules off of this theme.

Multi-Cultural Set:
A Little Peace
The Other Side
Peaceful Pieces
Every Human Has Rights
Each Kindness

I loved this book. It has such a beautiful message, and manages to not sound at all "preachy" while telling it. This book begins, "All it takes is... one HAND One SMILE A single VOICE To give a WAVE Say HELLO and spread a little PEACE." I thought this sentiment was so powerful and encouraging, it definitely gave me the shivers. That single quote takes up three pages front and back, but is set against wonderful pictures from around the world. Another thing that i thought was really cool about this book was that it gives the location each photo was shot along with a short description. There is also a really cool "note on PEACE," that contains famous quotes and a message from Richard Solomon, the President of the United states Institute of Peace.

Simple and beautiful, both verbally and visually.

Terrific National Geographic photographs from around the world highlight simple words about small ways each of us can spread a little peace:
"All it takes is... one hand / one smile, a single voice / to give a wave / say hello / spread a little peace"
and
"From home to home and shore to shore / share your smile, lend a hand / spread a little peace."

Wonder where a certain photograph was taken? No problem. Pages in the back have an explanatory paragraph for each photo, telling the location and giving a little information about pictured country.

This should be in every elementary library.

A Little Peace has National Geographic Images with simple but profound text. In the back of the book there is a description of where each photo came from and teh historic and cultural background as well. The text reflects ways in which we can gain universal peace through subjects of global importance. This book is for children age five and up. The images are wonderful and I especially like the explainations in the back of the book. I agree with the author we all hae the power to make the world a more peaceful place.

Barbara Kerley has created a beautiful piece of fiction. This simple and eloquent story along with its brilliant pictures allow children of all ages can relate to it. There is not a single piece of punctuation in the whole book, which I really do not like. While this is an easy reading book, there should still be basic commas and periods. The pictures are awe-inspiring and are so literal to the words on the pages that it clarifies meaning for young children. This would be a wonderful piece to start a kindergarden social studies unit with.

"All it takes is...one hand...one smile...a single voice...to give a wave...say hello, and spread a little peace...at the market...down the street on a crowded bus...or a sandy beach [cont]) A simple text accompanies vibrant full-page photos of people young and old all around the world--smiling, playing, studying, embracing. This is a great picture book to kick off a discussion of how to be peaceful and spread peace in our classrooms, communities, and families.

The spectacular photos in this book are from National Geographic. The accompanying text describes ways that children can bring peace into their own and the lives of others. The afterword and captions help to explain the purpose of the book. I plan to share this with my son, not only for the message of peace, but also to show him images of people from around the world.

Multicultural book which shows full-page photographs of people around the world demonstrating ways to show peace.

Beautiful book with simple, poetic text. The back of the book has information on where each photograph was taken. The children really enjoyed knowing where the pictures were taken. Because of the simplicity of the text, I would recommend this book for third graders and under.

Simply powerful. Beautiful pictures from around the world. Light and to the point vocabulary.
There is a wonderful section in the back that describes each picture used in the book.
A Note on PEACE in the back talks about The United States Institute of Peace and the program "Seeds of Peace"
A great resource to teach children about peace and remind adults where peace begins.
