Dark Season #1-8

Dark Season: The Complete First Series

Rate this book
For the first time, the entire first series of Dark Season books is available in one volume. Total word count is over 180,000 words, approximately 700 to 800 pages of a printed book.

When Sophie Hart is rescued from a mugging by a mysterious, silent vampire, she discovers that she is part of a dark prophecy. Patrick is the last vampire on Earth, having killed the rest of his species at the end of a bloody war, and he has plans for Sophie. But will she survive?

This volume collects the first 8 Dark Season books, covering the entire first series. Along the way, Sophie encounters not only a vampire but also werewolves, ghosts, evil maids with sharp teeth, crazed psychiatrists and dream-sucking Tenderlings. She travels to Gothos, the ancestral home of the vampires. She discovers a secret hidden inside the body of an old woman, and later she finds another dark secret hidden inside her own body.

This volume contains all 8 books in the first series

Book 1: The Last Vampire
Book 2: Sentinel
Book 3: Army of Wolves
Book 4: The Civil Dead
Book 5: The Life, Death, Life, Life and Death of Martin Keller
Book 6: Gothos
Book 7: Testament
Book 8: Dead End

Also included in this collection is Lupine Howl volume I, the first volume in a new werewolf series set in the same universe as Dark Season, but with different characters.

Please note: This book contains violence, swearing and sexual scenes. Also, the end of the whole book finishes on something of a cliffhanger, which will be resolved when the next Dark Season book comes out in July 2012.

Title: Dark Season: First Series
Author: Amy Cross
Genre: Horror
Publication Year: 2012

Review: As one of the first pieces I ever put on my Kindle, and one of Cross's first series, I did not know what to expect. I had never read Cross before (nobody had.) Ever since that year, I have treated Cross as a favored author. She likes to take established horror tropes and turn them on their ear. I will not spoil anything, so I will become silent on that topic.

At root, there is a dark romantic story involving: vampires, humans, werewolves, prophetic figures, and a psychotic doctor. The narrative may be a little too overt in the romance department for me, but it also provides true horror, blood, and gore sufficient to keep the tale interesting.

When Sophie Hart meets him who will eventually become her lover, she's surprised and distracted by the mere supposition that this vampire might be interested in something romantic with her. Yet, the reality of the situation is that there is a prophesy that proclaims that the union is destined to fail due to it's illicit, complex behavior.

The anthology is well-crafted. For something horror-related, it explains the intricacies of drawing attention to one's-self. There are some minor flaws in the manuscript related to some poor editorial choices, but none of them would I characterize as overly intrusive. Great monster romance to enjoy.

“The only people who believe in vampires these days are lonely hormonal teenage girls and pretentious, mascara-wearing guys.”

Another good read from this horror /fantasy writer and although I would agree that it needs a thorough edit, it did keep my interest from beginning to end.

I do like how it switches characters and the first person style and also how the to and fro in time reveals the inner workings of the plot little by little, thus making it a suspenseful read.

An interesting cast set within original ideas with themes such as betrayal, loyalty, friendship and love.

Patrick is a particularly intriguing character and although Sophie could be developed far more, maybe we will have to wait until the second series. These two characters, however, have an prophetic relationship - the basis of the story - and it will be interesting to find out its outcome, apart from...I don't give spoilers.

Yes, a good read for fans of this genre.

Each book as an individual story was well written, entertaining and a real page turner towards the end. However, I thought I had missed the final book of the series when I finished Book 8. Unfortunatly, that was not the case. "series 2", which should be called season 2 won't be out until later this year. This is nothing but a written soap opera and as such there is never an ending. The most important story lines were left dangling at the end of book 8. I hate soap operas and wish I hadn't wasted my time reading this one. While I would like to know what happens to Sophie and the baby, I'm not going to read the next season only to risk being left hanging again.

I stopped reading 😕 i made half way, but the story lost my interest. It was not my story, altough i'm really into vampires and things. For me it was too predictable, nothing suprised me. At one point i thought maybe i'm too old 😂 but on the other hand i read a lot of YA. And i did read Amy Cross before and I liked it.

I have come a long way since I first read book one in the Dark Season Series by Amy Cross. Novellas are not something I normally bother with, they are simply too short. You get into the groove of a story, get attached to the characters and then all of a sudden it is over. Dark Season books one, two and three were like that for me. The stories just too short. I wanted them to last longer, because they were just that good.

Then I discovered, after reading the first three in the series individually, this Complete First Series, all eight books in one hit. Brilliant! I devoured the rest of the series in one sitting making the problem of novellas and their too short stories defunct.

To top it off, I have come to realise that Cross is in fact approaching this whole novella thing from an intriguing angle. Each novella is considered an episode in something like a TV series. When I read this explanation, the whole novella versus novel problem took on a different meaning. I actually came to admire this novel approach. I liked the idea of each addition to the series acting like a TV episode, it all began to make sense.

So, the novella problem solved, my preferences realigned, now on to the story itself.

I have reviewed books one to three separately, but this review covers the entire series as a whole. There is something I very much like about Amy Cross's writing style. Forget the typos and grammatical errors, they don't even rate a mention, because the story itself is good enough to make those pesky little irritations a non-event. These are self-published books, there's bound to be the odd error. But, more importantly, the story is brilliant, the writing easy flowing and captivating, and the characters unusual and intriguing. All of which spells one great read.

I didn't love Sophie, but I didn't dislike her either. She just was. But the mystery surrounding Patrick the vampire and the prophesy lurking in the background was excellent. Some of the "episode" stories were a bit thin on the plot line, but considered as a whole, they all worked. There is a cliff-hanger at the end and the only thing I have to worry about now, is whether I can wait until all the books are out and buy them as one Complete Series or go with the individual novellas. Either way, I will be reading the next series.

To sum up; an interesting, intriguing, mysterious story with compelling and captivating characters. I like Cross's writing style, found this easy to read and addictive. These were enjoyable stories, but more than that, they were different enough to make you feel like you had been given an insight into a completely other world. One that I hadn't read in any other vampire story before - and let's face it, that's saying something, I've read a lot of vampire stories.

So, well done Amy Cross, great writing, super stories and definitely an author to keep an eye on. I can only imagine that she will get better and better with age.

I'm giving the entire Complete First Series of Dark Season an 8/10: "Excellent read, well written, fell right into the fictional world created" on the NBRS. A worthy addition to my Top Reads Bookshelf

A Must Read for readers who love vampire love stories.

I just want to say that this first series has me hooked. I am going to get the next books to finish this series. I love how A. Cross blends past and present together to make you understand what the prophecy is all about. I was really hoping that Patrick would finally say something to Sophie, but I was wrong. The author, clearly let's you know that love was felt, though not said in actual words. I loved the characters and the storyline. I was saddened by the end of this story, but was glad to find out that there were two more books to read. I have some questions that are left unanswered. What happens to the child? What did Patrick whisper to Shelley? I could go on with more questions. Guess I'll have to continue reading to find anything out. Keep up the great writing A. Cross. Cheers!!!!!

I read the first in this series and it was intriguing then I went and bought the complete series for 2.99. I wish I had just donated that money to the author to help her find someone who would fix all the mistakes and bad spelling in the book and maybe help her write a story. One of the worst books (series) I think I've ever read. It sucked my big toe!!!

Not crazy about the first person POV although that seems to be the thing now. Didn't like that it ends in a cliffhanger but, since I have Kindle Unlimited, I can deal. At roughly 700 pages for the complete series, there seems to be no clear separation of the individual works. Think of it as a long book with multiple sections.

The heroine is challenging to like in several places and makes questionable decisions that never seem to turn out well. For instance: she's been locked in a mental hospital and the hero kills her only friend in a fit of rage. Her reaction is "why did you kill him? You didn't have to do that. Let's get out of here together." So... are you going to be afraid/mad that he kills an innocent person who was trying to protect you or do you just need information from him so badly that you're going to ignore that little outburst like it didn't happen? She's really back and forth throughout the book and it's annoying. No explanation on why the hero doesn't speak & he makes no real effort to communicate outside of "meaningful" looks. Not much about the prophesy except that there is one. Nothing about what happened to Victor other than that he's suddenly dead and laid out in his bedroom but his body hasn't begun to decay "it's like he's waiting".... so, is he dead or is he a vampire in stasis? Doesn't matter since the house burns down with him in it. Who is Victor anyway? If Patrick is the "last vampire", Victor can't be his vampire sire or he wouldn't be the last... so where did he come from?

While the premise is good, the application is a bit wonky. I was able to follow it along enough that I'm going to give the second series a whirl and hope that it improves although, based on some of the comments that I've already read, I'm skeptical.

Dark Season: The Complete First Series by Amy Cross

The Dark Season Series has to be read in the order indicated in the synopsis. To do otherwise would leave the reader in confusion. This first season launches us into the lives of Sophie and Patrick, heroine and brooding vampire. Anticlimactic, it races toward the inevitable fulfilment of a centuries old prophecy. The best thing to do is hang on and enjoy the ride. This is the sixth novel I've read, and the third series of novels by Ms. Cross. I have noticed a recurring theme in the dynamics of the families. The mothers are portrayed as uncaring, slovenly drunks. The family consists of mother, the heroine and a younger sibling. While this isn't the only dynamic in her novels, it is prevalent enough to make one wonder. The father has either left, is dead or is missing. Sometimes the reactions from the characters isn't quite believable. When faced with seeing ghosts or vampires or other entities the reactions are: A) the characters think they are dreaming or insane, B) they don't question what happens to them. The jumping back and forth can be annoying at times. Still Ms. Cross pens good stories with enough twists and turns and surprises to keep the readers interest.

First off, I have to begin with some caveats. This series of eight novellas is among the first stories published by Amy Cross back in 2012, when she began her career as a writer. Consequently, this was my first purchase of Cross novels, and even though I don't love vampire soap operas, there is a sufficient amount of authentic scares, creeps, and gore to intrigue and stimulate a hardcore horror aficionado. Although there may be some few editing/grammar/spelling issues, there were not so many that they would be considered distracting.

Sophie Hart meets her vampire frenemy during a mugging where the reader finds out that she is prophesied to become the lover of Patrick who will also kill her. Over the course of these eight books there are other monsters that have a role to play in this drama: werewolves, Tenderlings, ghosts, sharp-toothed servants, a psychotic psychiatrist, and disparate fae folk. The question that seems to pervade the interplay is whether or not the prophesy is imminent or malleable.

As usual, Cross provides an imaginative series of tales that knit together to form a panoramic view of a romantic drama that culminates with blood and fangs thrashing. I would caution to temper expectations because as I mentioned in my caveats, Cross was just beginning to hone her craft. There are IMHO some rough edges, (such as way too much melodrama) but because she has become a favored author, I'm not judging her over-harshly. I enjoyed the read that helped satisfy my Halloween yayas.

Finally finished it.

Normally it does not take me months to finish a 700 page book but this one did. I understand it is a complete series but yikes. Transitions are almost non-existent in this series. In 700 pages you don't get to know the characters. All you get is one threat that is dealt with within that specific book and they may or may not be mentioned again in another book. This series reads like the rough drafts of books. There isn't enough time dedicated to knowing the characters so the tension is a bit hard to believe. If the author fills out the characters more in Series 2 there is hope.

I honestly loved the characters and the way this book was going until I got to book 4. I then realised that each new book was a gonna be a new threat. I just lost interest, I wanted to know more about the things we already knew but kept getting new things as I read on... seemed a bit disjointed! I can see why some like it, just not for me!

Many characters, several povs and so much death. Many unanswered questions. Few mistakes.
Plenty of characters to hate.... None to really love. Meh about reading the second.

Extra book #76... not of the EBN Challenge.

Ok... so I forgot to add this book after I finished it.

I enjoyed the storyline in this book, but the grammer and other basic errors were quite a bit to handle.
Missing letters, mixed up pronouns, using the wrong names, and using words that didn't fit in the sentence or dropping words completely really distracted me from the story.

Sophie Hart and Patrick... a kind of romeo and juliette in the paranormal world. It was a good base for a great story. I just felt it needed more... and an editor/proofreader.

This series was really enjoyable. Sophie is saved from a mugging set up by a reporter to lure the last vampire out of hiding. It tells of her acquaintance with Patrick and the prophecy that unfolds

A excellent vampire story

The characters are descriptive. And readable. All the book twists and turns. Patrick can't speak but loves Sophie. Contains a lot of gore.

Felt like someone took 5-6 different people's journals, pulled some pages out and stuck them all together to form one journal. The story is great, it bouncing around got frustrating.

Book 1 is the Last Vampire. It is about Sophie who is attacked at an ATM by 2 guys and they brutally beat her up until Patrick comes in to save her. Patrick takes her to Vincent who saves her even though she should have died. When she awakens she learns that Patrick is a vampire and he is the last vampire. Vincent tells her that Patrick will kill her one day yet not now, she will make him so upset and angry and he will kill her. She also realizes that Patrick does not speak and comes to her bedroom to visit her. She learns about Rose Tisser and Jessica Harper who were killed 50 years ago and she wants to know if it was Patrick that killed them. They located Jessica’s body yet they never did find Rose’s body. Sophie decides to visit Mr. John Tisser who was Rose’s brother and see if she could learn anything. He talked about his sister and said she was writing a book when this happened and gave her the book, although she realized it is a diary. Once she is at home, Patrick comes back to see her in her bedroom and wants the diary, he doesn’t seem to want her to know what happened to Rose and Jessica. She starts to refuse and you can see him get angry, he eventually gets the diary. The next day she goes back to Mr. Tisser’s house to discover he had a heart attack during the night. She meets his son, Adam who also knows some of the history of the death of the two girls. Will Sophie find out what happened to the? Will Patrick kill her?
Hamish is on the run from the werewolves. He has been able to avoid them for 500 years yet he needs Sophie to help him. Hamish is a friend of Patrick yet he needs Sophie to help him with the vampires. Need to read to find out what happens when the vampires show up.
The next part involves the tragedy that happens to Sophie’s dad, and a tenderloin that is, shall we say, attached to Sophie. Then we meet Martin Keller who is a vampire hunter and he is determined to kill Patrick. Will Keller succeed? We learn a little more about Vincent, will Vincent be able to help or die trying. Keller also wants to kill Sophie and her mother and brother.
The next part Patrick, Sophie and the Lock go to Gothos where they meet Diana and Astley. I will mention that Sophie is supposed to conceive a child while at Gothos as the prophecy predicted.
In the next part we have John Tarney who is locked away in a steel room. The orderlies want to take John to observatory yet John refuses to leave his room. He knows if he does, Patrick will know where he is. Sophie doesn’t know why she is at a psychiatric hospital or how she got here. It appears she has amnesia for the past year and she is told she was missing for a year although to her it was less than a week. She learns that she did have a baby.
The last part is when Sophie and Shelley venture out to find Patrick and the baby only to run into Dexter who tries to get them to help him capture Patrick so he can dissect him.

It was good, exciting and was like episodes in a TV show like BUFFY or something. But more dramatic and horror-like.

This book was clearly unedited and that was annoying, but it was still pretty good.

This book is about a girl named Sophie Hart and she gets wrapped into the world of Vampires and Werewolves, ghosts and more. This is not typical of Twilight and more chilling than True Blood/Sookie books. The Vampire Patrick doesn't speak and it's at first hard to realize his intentions. I like the characters in the book but I wish they were just a little bit more developed. The most interesting characters are the supernatural ones, (besides unspeaking Patrick, even he is a bit dull after a while) I want to care about Sophie a little bit more. I think I may give the second volume of these a try, but still have not quite decided.

While fully entertaining, they were as deep as Stephanie Plum books, but with the darkness I crave.

Simple, interesting, but not deep. I am craving more horror that gets to me....

Just a job well done from a lonely jamaican teen who is beyond enthused about finding your book and reading it again prior to this.

I just don't know. This is my second time reading Dark Seasons and I just don't know. I don't think I'll ever know, all I can cipher is the fact that it has earned it's place on the forefront of my mind of being one of the best books I've ever read and one day I will read the two other series. When I've emotionally recuperated. Thank you Amy Cross. I've fallen in live with Patrick and Vincent and Shelley and Adam and especially Sophie. I was never a fan of mystery or paranormal lol whichever, but I'm elated I found this book when I was 16, now 17 and I've read it again.

Reading the Completed Series, makes these novellas much more enjoyable. They're fun, quick reads.
I very much like Sophie' mental banters, they're very relatable and comical.
What I didn't like about these books are the lack of character building, although we are given snippets of them as you read each series. Also, there are so many grammatical errors, it's becoming annoying having to reread a sentence or paragraph over a few times so I can decipher how it should've been written.
I'm moving on to Series II now, so hopefully it gets better. At least Sophie' consistently amusing. LOL

Lots of seemingly disparate characters all with their own chapters but all are related. One young woman finds herself part of a prophecy and her world is literally turned upside down. The horror and carnage increases the further along in the book. The prophecy has not played out and continues in more books. I may or may not continue with this series. Initially I thought it was going to be a light read because of Sophie Hart's lack luster friends and family and I was very pleasantly surprised at how the writing vastly improved the more I read this.
