A year has passed since Amelia first entered the Royal Academy of Magic and endured the isolation caused by her ex-fiancé, Reese. Now, he’s locked away for his crime of forming a liaison with the Beltz Empire, and Amelia is happily engaged to the fourth prince of the Kingdom of Bedeiht, Sarge. They spend their days enjoying each other’s company and continuing their research, but their tranquil time must soon come to an end. Not long after the start of her second year at the academy, Amelia is tasked with her first official duty as the fiancée of a prince—traveling to the foreign Kingdom of Janaki to bring back the princess who is to wed Second Prince Est. Her mission may end up being harder than she realizes, but Amelia feels emboldened by the company of her friends, and most importantly, the prince who continues to shower her with his affection.

I really, really wanted to like this book. I loved the first one, but felt this lacked considerably compared to it.

My first complaint is that it felt like 2-3 more books worth of plot hurriedly crammed into one. Ideally from the start to kidnapping arc then another book going through the desert and defeating Alois arc. With the final book the coronation of a new emperor and developing the rain tool.

Another thing I felt, which is related to the plot cramming, is that there was not enough showing and too much telling of events in the book. A lot of the feelings of the characters were simplistic "I'm scared." "I'm happy" "I was worried" ect... And in events such as a kidnapping I wanna hear how fast Amelia's heart is beating, I wanna see the cold sweat on her hands, I wanna feel about the pain of thrashing about trying to escape and then finally the relief of being in the arms of the man she loves. We didn't get that.

Also I personally felt the sleepovers and interactions with the other girls and research went on way too long compared to sections of plot which were shortened. However that could just be personal preference.

Having found her love both for her fiancé the fourth prince and for research in the previous volume, Amelia cannot just enjoy her life just yet. The intended fiancé, the foreign princess Chloe, of her future brother-in-law is acting a bit odd, refusing to come over to the school as a foreign exchange student despite being enthusiastic about it earlier. Amelia is send over to investigate due to being of a similar age. Luckily she is not going alone, because more is going on that a teenager getting cold feet.

Like volume 1 the romance is a sugary sweet, but this time it is not the focus of the story. While the story has potential, things go a little too easy and there are a few too many coincidences for my taste. The end felt kind of rushed due to coincidences and the ease with which the issue was solved. So it ends up being a decent story, mostly set apart by its lack of "twists", a romance that makes sense without half-a-dozen of other handsome men to choose from and a world that does not completely fit the mode, but yet the amount of sugary sweetness and the lack of tension lessen my enjoyment, turning it into a fairly average story one that is neither a good romance nor a good adventure story.

I’m not really sure why I have loved this series so much. There are certain aspects I feel could be better but I always find myself re-reading part of this series whenever I’m sad. It’s simply become a comfort read.

I personally love Amelia’s character in this series. She’s smart, reflective, non-judgmental and immensely kind. Amelia isn’t a perfect character but she’s not unlikeable either. Instead I feel like Amelia is having a relatively good growth that’s both progressive and believable for this story. Also, I liked how Amelia’s always trying her best while being honest with her feelings. It reduces the chance of misunderstandings and I simply enjoy how she’s thinking about herself just as much as she thinks about others.

Sarge is a character I liked in volume one but there wasn’t anything unique that made him stand out. In volume two, we get to know a bit more about Sarge such as, his subtle possessiveness but passionate side towards Amelia. I really loved his small gestures towards Amelia throughout this volume, such as reassuring Amelia of her contribution and encouraging her to own her research; reaching out his hand towards Amelia; hearing her voice and not others while deep in focus; gifting a protective ring; and more. These gestures felt almost hidden and I easily overlooked them during my first read through. But Sarge’s gentleness really won me over in the end and I think it would be interesting if we were to receive a side story or chapter in Sarge’s perspective.

That said, I wanted more romance. These two are so innocent and cute and yet, there is little to no flirting and very little time spent between the two just relaxing. I understand the importance of their research but I am also greedy. We missed out on their engagement which is good because it means it went peacefully, but I also hope the third volume shows us a little more of them together. Maybe a date or a romantic moment!

The main focal point of this story is Amelia’s visit to the neighboring Kingdom of Janaki to bring back their youngest princess who is supposed to wed Second Prince Est. I liked how it was depicted from Amelia’s perspective because although she couldn’t do much and had little interaction with Princess Chloe, the story depicted a tense, discord-filled and uneasy atmosphere. I also liked how when Amelia, Sarge and Kaid were stuck on the other side of the mountain, the story had an uneasy feel to it because they were on potential enemy territory.

Throughout this volume we learn more about the royal family’s history, politics and neighboring kingdoms. It’s a small portion of this book and quite simple to understand without being overly necessary to the plot. It’s key to note that the focal point in this series is the weather and impending food shortage. Although, I find it weird how no one was researching the cause of the weather change. That said, I liked how Sarge and Amelia were using somewhat innovative approaches and keeping the commoner’s capabilities at the forefront of their experiments.

This volume highlights how kind the Kingdom of Bedeiht are. It is surprising that the only Kingdom with magical prowess is so kind and forgiving. That’s not to say individuals who have wronged are not punished. They are punished appropriately but consideration is given when the circumstances change. I liked this and although it may seem tedious and somewhat dangerous, I think it is doable given the royal family’s light magic.

Overall this series has a special place in my heart. I can’t specify why I love it exactly. If I had to guess it would be because there is a balance and no character is overly annoying, frustrating or clouded in cliches. I also find it refreshing and although I feel like there is a lack of romance and certain things close out too fast, I will continue re-reading this series.

Over to soon

It would be nice to have a volume 3, so that all the wedding would be covered and to see what they do about Reese and how Alois helps. Overall it's a good read.
