SURVIVAL 2000 The future is now. Tomorrow is only a nightmare away.
This novel reads like an Irwin Allen disaster movie with the cast from The Expendables. The plot is part of Niven & Pournelle's Lucifer's Hammer mixed with David Morrell's First Blood and Testament with all the action and suspense from Deathlands & The Outlanders series minus the JPL techno-babble.
Back in the early nineties Gold Eagle books started to lean away from the Rambo anti-terrorist books to more of a sci-fi slant. Survival 2000 is one of these books. Number one in only a three part mini series. The plot is very similar to the early 80's men's adventure series, The Survivalist. In those books there was a nuclear war and the hero was joined by a stranger to find his family. In Survival 2000 the hero has his son along on a quest to find his wife and daughters. No nukes in this one, only a runaway asteroid throws the world into darkness.
The action is a little thin here, but the story keeps moving along at a nice pace. The characters are nicely drawn out. You can tell the story is building up to something exiting. The only problem is you have to read book two to find out. I hope that one is as good as this.
David Rand is an expert marksman who survives and apocalyptic event with his son because they happen to be camping when the shit hits the fan. Eventually, they decide to leave the solitude of their camp and check on the rest of the world.
This is when they discover how evil and/or resiliant man can be. They also discover that the rest of their family survived the event and go in search of them.
This is pretty standard pulp fiction stuff. The lead guy is a bad ass who is faster and more accurate than the bad guys. He also is very attractive to all the ladies out there who survived the end of the world.
It was a fast and easy read. Nothing too special and nothing to process.
