After reading (and loving) Mind of the Phoenix I had really high expectations for Pawn of the Phoenix. I admit I was a little worried because my mind has been running wild with possible scenarios and speculations for weeks now as to who might be the Phoenix, what's up with the voice in Moira's head, what made Keenan the way he is and what the heck is going on in general. I didn't have to worry though because this sequel turned out to be even better than the first book.

Moira still struggles to find her place in the new world she finds herself in. She starts to like the very people she despised her whole life and has a hard time to cope with the sudden illusion of freedom she has to face, now that she lives in Keenan's house and helps investigating the Phoenix case. Her very confusing feeling for the detective and the extremely mixed signals he keeps sending her don't make it any easier for her. I loved how the author portrayed Moira and her struggles. Her moral compass might be a little...different than most people's (which leads her to one or two rather questionable decisions) but I couldn't help but love her. She saw and did things in her young life that no woman in her early 20s should have gone through. In my mind, that absolutely justifies her sometimes rather rough and stand-offish behaviour and I like her all the more for always staying strong and making no excuses for the way she is. That doesn't mean that there isn't any character development. Quite the contrary actually, because what Moira and Keenan find out about their pasts in this book absolutely blew my mind.

On several occasions while reading this book I couldn't believe my eyes. Jamie McLachlan did an amazing job linking the basic story and the Phoenix case with her main characters' back stories. I'm so tempted to add a little spoiler here, just to tease you a little, but honestly, you have to read it yourself - it's so worth it.

Another thing I absolutely loved about Pawn of the Phoenix was the romance. While there were only hints and a touch of romance in the first book, this one definitely gives the reader more insight into Moira's and Keenan's feelings. I'm crushing hardcore on Keenan alongside Moira and even more so after this book. Nothings ever easy for these two though and I went through the whole range while reading that book: heartbreak, joy, utter satisfaction, devastation, wonder...and as always a little bit of paranoia. Like I said, nothing is ever easy with and for these characters and in a world where no one's mind is safe from intruders literally anything is possible.

I can't wait to find out what Jamie McLachlan has up her sleeve for the rest of this series. The ending of Pawn of the Phoenix absolutely blew my mind and I am dying to see what happens next in this surprising and brilliant series.

**I received a free eARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review**

If you've read my review of Mind of the Phoenix (The Memory Collector #1), then you must know that I really loved that book :) and I'm very happy that I didn't have to wait too long for the sequel! :D

In Pawn of the Phoenix, Moira and Detective Keenan are still trying to figure out who the Phoenix is and not that much time has passed since the first book. I really appreciated that what happened in Mind of the Phoenix was explained briefly and that the characters were introduced in detail once again, since there were a few names I didn't remember. I guess this means that the book could be read without having read the first one? I'd still recommend reading it before though, it's amazing and you wouldn't want to miss it :)

And if you liked Moira and Keenan together, then you're going to love this! They were getting to know each other better and trust each other more too in the first book, but now the relationship between them is really beautiful. Until now, she's always told herself not to trust anyone, and that's how she has survived. Can't blame the girl, can we? I would've done the same! But now she's with the detective and it's the cutest thing!

Someone's also getting in the way, the good old Mr. Hayes, who was a little bit crazy about Moira. And he makes things more interesting.

There's also some of progress with the case, more victims appear and Moira and the police start to get more involved. The detective also starts to investigate about her past, especially because he doesn't want to believe that Moira was capable of killing someone, even if that person was always torturing and hurting her. I really liked this part since I LOVE getting to know more about what she has been through, her past is heartbreaking, she's so strong! And am I the only one who is very interested in Devin? He was a male concubine from the pleasure house. I hope he's still out there and we get to see him soon! And I definitely want to see more about his past with Moira.

Oh and things start getting a little bit out of control too, people are now sure that the Phoenix must be an empath, so there are riots and they want the houses to be shut down and all empaths dead.

We also find out about Keenan's past. I actually had my suspicions that it was something like that. This is a very important part of the story and just proves how much Moira cares about him. They're precious (his past broke my heart a little bit though, I felt kind of bad for Moira). And I can't get enough of his mind full of gears! I think it's the coolest one we've seen so far, even though Scott's (Moira's former master) was amazing and hers too, it's like there's a little Hogwarts in her head with all those staircases moving.

And I'm almost sure that Moira reads my mind too when I'm reading these books, I mean, she tells me everything I want to know! And I love that we're also told about every single feeling there is, since she can sense that stuff, and I like to be informed, thank you very much :) How helpful it is for us that she always knows what Keenan is feeling.

Finally: that ending! The next book can't come soon enough! I just can't wait to see how things turn out, we know more about the Phoenix now, so I guess it's all about to get more interesting :) But please oh please let there be a happy ending for Moira and the detective. She deserves all the happiness in the world.

After devouring the Mind of the Phoenix, I had high expectation for the Pawn of the Phoenix and the sequel did not disappoint! If anything, McLachlan made it more intense, more suspenseful and I couldn't help falling in love with Keenan and Moira all over again.
In the Pawn of the Phoenix, the serial killings continue in Braxton, but the Phoenix has decided to change part of his technique and public outrage is growing towards the police department. Moira and Keenan are forced to confront their past as the investigation leads them deeper into personal territory, testing their tenous bond.

Keenan and Moira undergo so much character development through this novel. I loved the fiery, independent and awesome character that was Moira. There were some decisions she made that would have made me raise my eyebrows if it was any other character, but with Moira she's established so well and you just understand how her past has affected her perspective of the world that it makes you want to cheer at her triumphs and cry for her sufferings. When Keenan's past was revealed, I had a suspicion that that was the case, but it was so heartbreaking to read and see the way it changed a much-loved character. I loved seeing these two character help each other from the trials of their past and build a relationship that was based on more than attraction.

I really enjoyed reading the beautiful way the author has of describing the way empaths read minds. I was really glad that she re-introduced the character smoothly in this novel, because one of the things I found difficult in her previous book was keeping track of all the different characters that Keenan and Moira met.

MchLachlan's absolutely well-rounded characters, unexpected cliffhanger and the scattering of clues leading up to the enigma that is the Phoenix makes it such a struggle to wait for her undoubtedly amazing next instalment.

I was so excited to get Book 2 and boy it did not disappoint. This one is just as great as the first one. I am literaly in love with Moira and Keenan's relationship the flirting and the chemsity between the two is on point. To me this series has the potienal to be up there with the Harry Potter series. The story leaves you wanting to know what happens next, I look forward to book 3 and I have no shame saying I will revamp book 1&2 several more times waiting for it to come out

Pawn of the Phoenix is a perfect blend of murder mystery and hot romance, interesting characters, unique world building and captivating writing. I couldn't put the book down and finished it in one day. I love both books in the series because of the unique premise which I have not seen before. And I loved the second book, Pawn of the Phoenix, even more than the first book. The author created alternative Victorian society where people with special mental abilities, empaths, are feared because they are able to manipulate people's mind, memories and dreams. Empaths have no rights and are kept as slaves in order to control them. Our main heroine, Moira is such empath, slave and former concubine, who is now helping detective Keenan Edwards to solve a string of murders orchestrated by elusive Phoenix. Moira has the ability to "enter" other's people heads and see their memories and thoughts. I loved her perceptions of people's minds and how they work differently. Some are cold and uninviting and full of dark corners and stairs that lead to God knows where, some are like forests with shadows, some are peaceful like meadows; some are simple and some are complicated like clockwork. I found these descriptions vivid and fascinating.

I love Moira's character, she is smart and strong. The chemistry between her and Keenan is explosive. And Keenan is a perfect tortured and brooding Byronic hero with skeletons in his closet (or on his bookshelf). Moira can't help to fall for him, even though she knows they have no future together because she is a slave and not his equal. Another interesting character is Icarus Hayes, who is attracted to Moira and does not treat her as slave but his motives are murky an it is not clear what side he is on.

In Pawn of the Phoenix some of the secrets from the first book are revealed but new mysteries are introduced, new murders occur and the plot thickens. The author is doing a great job of keeping reader in suspense. Every time a letter was delivered to a character I kept thinking "Don't open the letter, don't open the letter." With Phoenix anybody could be the next target.

The ending was unexpected and a little shocking and I can’t wait for the next book to come out.

When I finished yesterday, I was more or less prepared to write my review and now, all I can think about is. THAT ENDING! THE WAITING AHEAD!

I will try to remember. It all sound so professional and funny. Meh. At least it sounded funny.

But now, things like... "I KNEW IT!"..kinda, sorta...well, not really, until it happened keep bombarding my mind. I guess is safe to say, this review is more like me venting because..."THAT ENDING!"

*cries bitterly*

This one surprised me, some..events, I expected them later on. But I am so so satisfied as how it was done. The need I get to skip at that kind of scenes was totally absent, Oh and I cried. Lots. And smiled. And sighed too. A lot.

*sigh*

We get to see more about some old characters. Meet new ones and as always suspect everyone. The mystery, the investigation, I felt took a second place in this one. That I missed a bit. I wanted more action...eh...hmmm
Whatever, the other action we got was good too.

*evil grin*

...
...
...

That ending tho.
That freaking ending....

I considered a dignified review, but eh.
WHAT DID YOU DO?! I don't want that epilogue!!! Take it back! Make it go away! I liked the end of the last chapter better!

So, Jamie McLachlan promised me that we'd learn more about Keenan in this book and boy do we! Though, Moira sporadically still calls him the Detective, which means he still feels just as mysterious and sexy as he did in the first book. We don't learn all his sordid past - there's a mention of an unhappy childhood - but we do learn something major. And I've taken a long time to work out how to address my next comment without spoilers. You know how sometimes something happens and you just know they were being stupid and they should have done something else? Well I thought we had that situation, but turns out we didn't! Not really, and it was good she didn't burn it....who knew?!

Confession time. I realised I had this in my collection right before I started the second Vampire Academy series. (in fact, I'd made no record of having it, I only discovered it when looking for something to do while I was in standstill traffic!!) So I went into this book attempting to 'get it out of the way' so I could cram Bloodlines in before my next review book. I decided that this was close enough to my having read the first one and that I'd not need to re-read it. I was only half right with this and I'll have to re-read them both before the third that's for sure! HOWEVER, even though I entered this book while wanting to read another, it still pulled me right in! So much so that, when I hit the mid point of the book there was a happy event that I thought meant that things would go massively wrong afterwards. Usually when I find these I put the book down for a day or two to build up to what's happening next. This one I simply put down over night! It was in my hands again within a 12 hour period,

I love the development of Moira and Keenan's relationship and her character development. They have a lot more in common than she first realised and while she's adamant she's a horrid, selfish person she's getting better, by the end of the book she's so different. She's also stopped obsessing over who desires her, which is lovely! But perhaps it's because we meet so few new people? Anyway, she's grown on me a lot and I'm currently devastated over everything right now. Still love Keenan too! I mentioned in my review of book one how amazing he was, well he's just as amazing here. He has an understandable wobble, but he more than makes up for it.
There are no other murder mysteries to solve in this book, but there's some drama in another way - this book is more about bringing the main characters together, which is an odd thing for a book 2. I hope that doesn't mean that book 3 is about pulling them apart!!!!!!!

I also noticed something that was forgotten there at the end. I'm not sure if it was a character forget or an author forget, but we'll see!

And, the afore mentioned epilogue? May have ruined everything. EXCEPT! Moira is strong. We know this. I so desperately want to have faith in her getting through. I hope it doesn't break anybody though, we have fragile people here and I'm one of them! I also hope this is a trilogy, because I can't handle another ending like this!

Let me start by saying that Jamie McLachlan has an awesome talent for writing. Her world is complex, unique and captivating. Her characters are fleshed out and have great voices that solidify them as leading roles in the story. The concept of Empaths is fascinating and heartbreaking and really pulls you in with each new bit of information revealed. PotP is a great murder mystery mixed with the supernatural. I loved the dynamic between Moira and Keenan. It was ripe with sexual tension, discovery and it had a great love/hate relationship. This was a poignant emotional read. You feel intensely for both Moira and Keenan - at first impression Keenan was a cold unfeeling bastard, but the more we learned about him, the more I liked him.

That being said, I really had to bite the bullet to finish this one.

The reason I couldn't devour this one like Mind of the Phoenix (book 1) is the lame and completely (IMO) pointless love triangle that was created!

Aside from that let down (I'm sorry but this is a huge pet peeve of mine!) the continued story of the mystery of the Phoenix picked up a lot more speed. Where as before in MotP, it was more an introduction to the conspiracy, in the 2nd part, the Phoenix and his intricate web of deception, manipulation and murder is at the forefront.

I admit I had to take a deep breathe and step back for a while before finishing this one but once I got over (not really!) that imagery of Moira getting hot and heavy with someone not Keenan, the mystery aspect of PotP really took hold of me. If I could just wipe that whole Hayes plot device out this would have been a freaking 4-5 star read for me! (I really think that the author could have achieved the same surprise factor without it as with it. Now it's just gross and creepy!)

Alas, no can do, so I gave it a three for keeping the mystery/suspense part alive and kicking. I know this was a good read because even with the issues I had with PotP, I still want to find out how all this ends, so I'm going to wait patiently for part 3 and hope for the best.

The first in the series, Mind of the Phoenix, ended in a bit of a cliffhanger. Not the, “Why did you do this to me?” type of ending. More the, “Yes, that’s the perfect ending. Now tell me MORE!” finale.

So I went into Pawn of the Phoenix excited and ready to see where the story would lead.

Pawn opens with Moira and Keenan still embroiled in the mystery of the Phoenix, but also still revolving around one another - trapped and unsure how to move forward. The killer has struck again and through their investigation, Keenan begins to suspect that there may be another victim that no one guessed at yet. Moira moves into Keenan’s house for her own safety, but finds living with the detective frustrating and confusing. She struggles both with the idea of her relative freedom but also with the knowledge that when the case ends, her future is undecided.

As with Mind of the Phoenix, McLachlan nails the character development. Both Keenan and Moira are traumatized individuals, carrying heavy emotional burdens. They don’t simply cast this baggage off to one side when it becomes inconvenient to the story. Instead, they bear it with them as they draw closer to one another. Their story is fantastic and heart wrenching at the same time.

Pacing is excellent and the setting very well drawn. Moira and Keenan’s world is brutal. McLachlan convincingly portrays the ways empaths in her stories have chosen to deal with their enslavement. Some are acquiescent, accepting of their places in society, while others manipulate from behind the scenes. Some exploit the system they live under, while others are borne along with the tide of a culture that hates them, but finds them useful.

A fantastic sequel and well worth the read!

Pawn of the Phoenix begins where Mind of the Phoenix leaves off.  Moira and Detective Keenan Edwards continue to pursue the Phoenix, the elusive mastermind of a plot to overthrow the elite.    Leads are few and far between, and as the number of victims grows, so too does public unrest.

Pawn of the Phoenix varies from Mind of the Phoenix in that there is a much stronger sexual element to the plot.  The sexual element is not gratuitous and plays an important role.  Moira’s initial attempts to start a relationship with Keenan lead to a misunderstanding that prompts her acceptance of Icarus Hayes’s invitation.  The pursuit of her own pleasure and the satisfaction of her own emotional needs is a novel experience for Moira.  Love and marriage are forbidden to empaths.  Although she has much sexual experience, she has little experience of personal comfort or pleasure.  Freedom is a difficult concept for Moira, and her assistance  in the pursuit of the Phoenix puts her at odds with both the Elite and with other empaths.  The Phoenix claims to offer an end to the slavery of empaths, but with what result and at what cost.

On the surface, Pawn of the Phoenix is simply a fantasy novel with a heavy romantic element.  Once you look beneath, more serious questions arise on the nature of freedom, identity, and the integrity of personal memory.

Pawn of the Phoenix is an excellent fantasy novel and a thrilling continuation to Mind of the Phoenix.  The books must be read in order.  The heavy sexual element makes it inadvisable for younger readers.

The second instalment to the 'Memory Collector' series, 'Pawn of the Phoenix' invites readers back into the world of empaths, murders, mysteries and romance. This next book in the series is filled with everything I loved about the first book, including an interesting and dark world, alluring characters riddled with ulterior motives, and the budding hopeless romance between a slave and Detective, and much more. While this alternative universe is dark, gritty and brutal, it is exactly these attributes that pulls in readers and leaves them wanting more more more. The characters are the best part of these books, especially the protagonist Moira, providing some humour in horrible situations, while not making light of the tragedies that befall her. Despite everything that she has been put through, she manages to hope for a better life and find someone to put before herself. No one is as they seem, and it is the most innocuous characters that may pose the greatest threat. Another wonderful and exciting read from Jamie McLachlan that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Pawn of the Phoenix is the sophomore offering from Jamie McLachlan, and it is a winner. McLachlan returns us to her fantastical world of Braxton, and picks up shortly after the conclusion of her outstanding debut novel, Mind of the Phoenix.

In Pawn, we follow the continuing efforts of former concubine and empath Moira and Detective Keenan Edwards to capture the elusive serial killer, The Phoenix. As the story unfolds, we are treated to haunting and heartbreaking glimpses into both Moira's and Keenan's pasts as they grow closer, and a forbidden love begins to bloom. We also get to know a number of the supporting characters better, some of whom you will want to hug, others you will want to hide from.

While a fabulous crime thriller, and love story, Pawn also delves deeper into the issues of prejudice, racism and the privileges of upper class life that were raised in Mind of The Phoenix. As with many second stories in a series, Pawn leaves us with a cliffhanger that left me shouting, "No!" I cannot wait for the next installment in the series to see what surprises McLachlan has in store for us.

If you enjoy urban fantasy, romance, police thrillers, or simply exquisitely crafted stories, Pawn of the Phoenix is a must read!

I read the first book in the Memory Collector Series very reluctantly and found I really, really liked it. So, when I was asked if I'd like to review the second book before its publication by Penner Publishing, I jumped on the chance. My expectations were a little high from the first book, and I was afraid I wouldn't like the second as well. I am so glad I was offered the chance! The second book was even better than the first. The author continues to expertly weave a good romance with a good mystery. We learn some answers to questions from the first book and we are introduced to more questions. The book is filled with an excellent plot, wonderful characters, romantic tension, and an advancement on the plot (which I find some books don't do well). Go out and get both books by this author. Wonderful series and I highly recommend it!

Jamie McLachlan is an amazing romance writer and a mediocre mystery writer. In the first book the main mystery that of the Phoenix wasn't bad, I had no idea that there would be more empaths involved, and that's where the mystique ends. It couldn't have a been more obvious who the rapist was in that book and by the second half of The Pawn of the Phoenix, it couldn't have been more obvious who the Phoenix is.

Having said that I still look forward to seeing what happens which is why I'm a little stressed as to where the third book is. By the end of the second it's obvious we'll be carrying on and this book came out like a year ago so where the hell is the third one?!?!

On a lighter note, the thing we got going on between Moira and Keenan couldn't be more hot and magical which is why this one merits 4 stars.

This is the second book is a fantasy series in the urban classification. The book has a lot to offer including a take on empathic abilities.

Moira a former mistress of the bed. She was a whore but is so much more. Can she survive the Phoenix. What will happen when she starts to find out the truth about her past and her now.

This was a second book I have read by this author and while I loved the first one this didn't have quite the draw of book one which was all about meeting of moira

Great follow up to the first book! This time we dive into the detectives story and get to see his dark past. Moira keeps growing as a character and we get to see some new sides of her.
The end did not fully blew my mind because I already had a suspicion, but I didn't actually think that's where the book leads. Now I am completely excited for book #3 and can't wait for it to come out!

A huge perk to being published (besides all the obvious ones) is getting to know other authors you share a publisher with. In developing these relationships, and in this case, friendship, you are able to receive advanced copies of their books. Such is the case of this highly anticipated second installment of The Memory Collector Series, Pawn of the Phoenix. The book is due out in February, so at least you won’t have to wait long.

If you haven’t read the first book, Mind of the Phoenix, what in the world are you waiting for? I mean seriously, you can get it on Amazon, Kobo, B&N, iTunes and Paperback.

The Memory Collector Series is set in the fictional city of Braxton maybe around the turn of the century, early 1900s. Empaths are slaves to the Elite and work in one of the houses (dream, memory, or pleasure) or are privately owned. The infamous self-described Phoenix plants persuasions in select citizens’ minds that are triggered by a delivered letter. These persuasions involve suicide or murder, usually of an Elite member.

While Mind of the Phoenix set up the story and introduced the main characters, Moira and Keenan, Pawn of the Phoenix delves more into the backstories of the main characters, furthers the plot along with a couple more murders/suicides (and even an execution), and deepens the relationship between Moira and Keenan. In case you didn’t read the first book (again why?????) or read my review of it, I will explain a little about what’s going on. Detective Keenan Edwards is leading the investigation to find the Phoenix. He’s stoic and controlled, at least until his blocked memory is released. Moira is an empath who has killed her master and has been offered a deal to get out of prison in exchange for her assistance with the investigation by using her special gifts.

The story is well-paced and interesting and although it’s the middle-child of the series, it doesn’t feel like filler. There’s more romance this time around and even some schmexy time (although relatively mild to middling), but the investigation still leads the way even though the clues are few and far between. I was a little disappointed we didn’t find out who the Phoenix was at the end of the first book, but we do get that little tidbit in the Epilogue of Pawn. I’m not a fan of cliffhangers usually, but THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE A CLIFFHANGER. I now know who the Phoenix is, but there’s so much intrigue left that I find myself in more anticipation of Rise of Phoenix (book 3) than I was for Pawn. Woe is me for having to wait.

In case you haven’t picked up what I’m putting down, I highly recommend this book (and series) to anyone who enjoys speculative fiction, historical fiction, mystery, intrigue, or even romance.

***I received a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review***
I finished the second book in the series almost as quickly as I finished the first book in the series. However, I loved this book even more than the first book.
This author has amazing talent and I love her ability to write such a beautiful novel that I know I will remember long after I finish the book. I enjoyed the second book in the series even more than the first because now the main characters are able to truly get into the case and find out who is committing these crimes. Key details are able to be revealed and the reader falls right back into the action that was left off in the first book.
Moira is such a strong female lead and she continues to try and find her way in the situation she has been in. I absolutely adore Moira as a character and find myself rooting for everything to turn out okay for her. I wish she existed in real life because the author truly does a great job at making her relatable even in a world of fiction.
For those who had been waiting for the romance there is some in the second book! The author does a great job at not having too much romance where the reader gets annoyed but is still able to give everyone what they want in a fictional romance. I loved seeing Moira and Keenan grow closer even as Keenan tries to stop it. You can also truly see how much Moira cares for Keenan in this book.
The past makes an appearance in this book and it really brings the plot to a turning point in both the investigation and in the lives of the characters. I am excited to see where the author takes this book next.
What can I say? The plot manages to thicken and the Phoenix is still on the loose! The author manages to answer a few burning questions for the reader while still leaving some questions unanswered and creating even more questions that make me desperate for the next book!

Whoever has yet to read the first book should do so immediately and then read this book. You will be happy you did if you love fantasy and fiction as much as I do!

The End, WOW get ready to be blown away! This is the type of cliffhanger that makes my imagination and anticipation soar. Well played McLachlan well played! I had an inkling but I never imagined for things to play out the way they did in the end. Moira and Keenan are so close to the Phoenix that it’s scary. Several pieces are in place and Moira has discovered so much about herself I hope she has the strength to pull herself out of the darkness. There is a lot of resolution...tensions and passions reach all time highs and the author does a marvelous job of weaving everything together in the most delicious way. Bravo, Bravo, I will be dying slowly until I can get my hands on the next! I’ve come to care for Moira and want her to find the peace and happiness she so deserves.

My Rating
4.5 Town Home, Romance Novel, Bath, Nude, Mr. Hayes, Jonathan, Keenan, Chief, Letter, Phoenix, Note, Date, Games, Hangman, Blond, Child, Elite, Memories, Devin, Devin, Devin, Clocks, Stairs, Visit, Obsession, Oppression, The promise of dark things to come, Holy Moly I can’t wait for the next!!

FANTASTIQUE...

This follow-up is on par with the first book in the series. Quick and light, I finished it in a day. Like Mind of the Phoenix, this story does not have a real ending, just a cliffhanger-y epilogue setting the stage for the next book. It also turns out that I was right about the Phoenix’s identity - it’s disappointingly obvious. There isn’t much additional world building in Pawn of the Phoenix, but I did enjoy going deeper into the characters’ minds. Both Moira and Keenan have secrets from their past revealed, and once again, their relationship is the true highlight. The story has pretty much devolved into pure romance-novel territory at this point, so if you’re only interested in the fantasy or mystery aspects, you’re going to be disappointed. However, romance fans may still find this series up their alley. I may pick up the third and final installment, just to see if Moria and Keenan get their happily ever after.

A spectacular sequel to the first boo. I was completely immersed in Keenan & Moira's struggles to find the Phoenix but also their blossoming love affair.
We are transported to the world of the previous book with wonderful author skill and attention to detail. Well done Jamie.

Is that it? Is this the ending? I'm not sure if I'm disappointed or not..but I think I am. I don't care about a HEA but I would have liked some clarification of what had really happened..

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Summary

This book (and, indeed, this series) is phenomenal. It is set in a world where telepaths (known here as empaths) are treated as slaves by the non-empath elites. Moira, the main character, was saved from execution in the previous novel when a mysterious serial killer starts murdering with mind-control. This book continues that story as well as the growing relationship between Moira and Keenan.

Plot

I loved this book. I’m generally quite wary of second books in a series because they have a lot to live up to. In this case the author definitely succeeds in making it a story that really captures the reader’s attention while also providing a clear and gripping continuation of the storyline. There is plenty of development and the ending left me staring at the final page in horror (in a good way, I think).

This book does get a little steamy in places, so a warning to any younger readers who are interested in this series. This was the only part of the book which really let it down for me, sadly. I don’t particularly enjoy reading these kind of scenes and while I don’t mind them from time to time, there were a lot in this book. They were very well written though and it didn’t feel awkward and cringe-worthy reading these passages as can sometimes occur in other books.

Characters

Moira is a brilliant female lead. She is an incredibly real character, despite her mind powers, and Mclachlan is not afraid to take her down a darker route either. Indeed, the hints of a darker side to her character are some of my favourite parts. We also get to see more of Keenan in this book and get a bit of background as to why he is. While I was apprehensive at first when I first got a glimpse at where it was headed, his backstory was beautifully crafted and I found myself completely enthralled by it.

World/Setting

Mclachlan does a fantastic job of weaving this world in your head. The city this book takes place in feels like one you could easily go and visit, despite it being an alternate Victorian-style city where half the population can read minds. The telepathic gifts in this are fascinating. There are multiple branches to it, most notably shown with the three houses, but how the telepathic gifts are demonstrating is beautiful. Every person’s mind has a unique structure and aesthetic. While one person may have clockwork, another’s mind may be a meadow. I found this a really interesting way of describing minds, as they reflect the character’s personality and makes me wonder what everyone’s minds would be like in real life.

Final thoughts

As the second book in this series (The Memory Collector series), this is a fantastic continuation of the story. Thrilling, sensual and impossible to put down, murder mixes with romance in Pawn of the Phoenix to create a unique and fascinating novel. The next book in the series cannot come soon enough.

Pawn of The Phoenix was incredible. It starts where Mind of the Phoenix left off and just jumps, page after page. It never lets you go. Mrs. McLachlan's style has solidified and her writing skill never fails to amaze me. Mind of the Phoenix gave you a peak into the rising hate of empaths for their masters and a taste of the fear the Normals have for those who can read their minds. Pawn builds on that perfect foundation and then pulls you along by dropping clue after clue regarding the face of the Phoenix. The tension continues to build and never lets go. Who knows where it will end except the maker, the author herself. The central premise of the book is a mystery. I couldn't say that in my first review because it would be a spoiler but, if you are reading this, you already know and can't get enough. The relationship between Keenan and Moira now thickens until it drips from your tongue. They are both broken individuals but their defects arise from different backgrounds and create an inescapable attraction neither can resist. However, their differences also make it impossible for them to understand each other. Hence the central conflict between themselves and "the other". You now know Moira pretty well but Keenan has remained a mystery. Mrs. McLachlan finally lets you see into his clockwork mind and, you guessed right, it's a mess. Why did I like this book so much (other than the wonderful writing)? Because it's different. It's unique and surprised me page after page. Everyone is suspect. Everyone has to choose a side and some have no idea they've already chosen. The mystery is the story. The story is the mystery but, it's not a who dunnit. It's a what the hell is going to happen next. Similarly, the romance is not planned and plotted, it's an inevitable clash of two wonderful characters who are so intriguing to each other they can't stay apart. One searches for something lost. The other looks for something they don't believe exists. A parallel time line Elizabethan mind control murder romance with a dash of erotica and everyone is guilty of something. What's not to like? Five beautiful stars. I am so excited for the next one and I hope Mrs. McLachlan won't make me wait for long. Well done Jamie. Well done.

1.5 stars - There was an extreme drop in quality between this book and the first, which I rather liked. The mystery of the Phoenix (the apparent perpetrator of which has been blindingly obvious since their introduction) takes a backseat for much of the story as Keenan transforms into a complete prick and randomly assaults Moira. Because hey, ain't true love grand?

Then just to add salt to the wound, our hero gets the most hilariously overwrought past drama -- I'm sorry but that trope is never good, especially when it's used entirely for goddamn manpain. Perhaps I'd have sympathised more with the Keenan we met in the first book. Y'know, that guy who defended Moira and never overstepped the mark with her, as opposed to the drunk rapey prick he's become in this book.

Story wise, the whole thing was quite stodgy with the Phoenix's calculated murder spree being used as little more than a B-plot for the romantic melodrama between Keenan and Moira. Part of what made the original book so compelling was how tightly focused it was on the pursuit of the killer, with the romantic elements used sparingly to great effect.

Overall, an extremely disappointing follow up to a solid debut.

Some spoilers

I really, really hate it when books end in cliffhangers, especially when it's been sort of obvious that the person in question isn't really all that trustworthy (an incident where Moira should have noticed that he exhibited empathic capabilities... She doesn't trust anyone at first, so why him?)

I liked the book in general and read it quickly because I wanted to find out what happened--Moira's own personality was starting to frustrate me even though I knew it was her background that made her react the way she does to things.

I wasn't sure that bringing up the whole issue of Keenan's past was necessary. It seems like the characters are never in a mild state of emotion--it's always one extreme or the other. I think I would have been much happier with the book if it hadn't been for the epilogue--it really seems Moira should have been smarter than to go alone.

I really loved this book. Like a lot.
There was something about it that was very realistic. And there is no holding back. And i mean no holding back.
I liked this because there is no sugarcoating and it creates a really great story, and a very unique one.

Recommended read to everyone!!
