The questionnaire at the beginning of this book is fantastic. I've been doing a lot of career introspection lately and I'm frustrated with all the hand-wavy articles about work-life balance and finding meaning.

Leiter and Maslach offer exactly what I was looking for: a robust inventory that asks relevant questions about topics like Workload, Control, and Reward. The questions help you pinpoint exactly where your frustrations lie. What makes this inventory great is that it doesn't impose specific priorities on you. A high workload or limited input into company direction aren't inherently bad things, but you run into problems when there's a major mismatch between what your employer is offering and what you want out of your work environment. Like a personality quiz from a magazine, your answers will tell you what kind of problem to solve first. For example, Workload mismatches could indicate overall exhaustion, being too available, not having enough time to complete your work, or having too much work assigned to you.

I found the rest of the book less compelling: the advice on how to handle specific types of problems is necessarily shallow, since these are all huge topics. I also found the goal-setting process to be lacking, but I have pretty strong opinions on that front. (I think most people should create some variation of agile + GTD processes tailored to their own life.) In any case, the entire book is succinct and highly structured, with clear section headings, so it's easy to skim through and make up your own mind.

This book was published in 2005 but it's still completely relevant. Even the dated things don't really sound out of place: we're using social media and chat apps, not pagers and text messages, but we're still overly connected to our devices. Modern life is stressful, from political turmoil to environmental disasters and even diseases (it mentions SARS).

Update: Pandemic Burnout; Now What? is a good high-level summary of the core ideas in this book and Maslach's other books about burnout.

Having been a victim of burnout, I was looking for a method to help me to avoid or recover more quickly from excessive stress. I delved into Banishing Burnout and found it very helpful.

A psychologist, Herbert Freudenthal coined the term 'burnout'. Burnout is defined in Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary as "the condition of someone who has become very physically and emotionally tired after doing a difficult job for a long time." This tells us three things 1) burnout is job-related 2) burnout is a condition 3) burnout is characterized by stress, depression, cynicism, and hopelessness.

At some point in your career, you will experience burnout. How do you handle the emotional and physical aspects? In Banishing Burnout, by Michael P. Leiter and Christina Maslach, provide a plan that will help you overcome the stress and pressure of the office. This in theory will allow you to be healthy, more productive, and to achieve your vision of success. Michael Leiter is an organizational psychologist interested in the relationships of people with their work. He has recently been appointed a Tier I Canada Research Chair position in Occupational Health and Well-Being. Christina Maslach is an American social psychologist and professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, known for her research on occupational burnout.

Helpful to see written in plain English that no matter how burnt out you have become, your employer is not going to help. You have to find your own way. Maybe that was the best lesson of all? I really found the assessment of my current work situation to be helpful. It gave me a place to start in focusing on the things that will have the most impact. I can't say that I'm no longer burnt-out, but I can say that I have more insights about my situation.

This is more of a workbook than an informational guide. The intro is useful, and the first 30 pages give some great points on the prevalence of burnout and it's origins in our immature working corporate culture. Unfortunately the book quickly devolves into a repetitive set of steps and motivational headings.

If you're struggling mid-burnout to work out what to do, the test and strategy ideas in this book will likely help, but if you've already acted to change your burnout situation, or you're not based in a corporate job which is the source of your burnout, then this may not be all that useful to you.

Very well-structured book that clearly shows the objectives and actions to take to combat the different types of burnout that people can feel. The test up front confirmed what I already knew, or felt, but reading just those sections of the rest of the book made for an efficient use of my time in trying to determine what to do to help with the burnout.

An extremely practical manual, situated within a cognitive/behavioural framework, for addressing fatigue and exhaustion in the workplace. Includes action planning toward solving workload, control, and values problems. Would make a great manual for a burnout program.
