James Robert "Jim" Davis is an American cartoonist who created the popular comic strip Garfield. Other comics that he has worked on are Tumbleweeds, Gnorm Gnat, Slapstick, and a strip about Mr. Potato Head.

Jim Davis was born in Fairmount, Indiana, near Marion, where he grew up on a small farm with his father James William Davis, mother Anna Catherine (Carter) Davis, brother Dave, and 25 cats. Davis' childhood on a farm parallels the life of his cartoon character Garfield's owner, Jon Arbuckle, who was also raised on a farm with his parents and a brother, Doc Boy. Jon, too, is a cartoonist, and also celebrates his birthday on July 28. Davis attended Ball State University. While attending Ball State, he became a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. He earned the dubious honor of earning one of the lowest cumulative grade point averages in the history of the university, an honor incidentally shared with Late Show host David Letterman.

Davis as of 2007 resides in Muncie, Indiana, where he and his staff produce Garfield under his company, Paws, Inc., begun in 1981. He was married to Carolyn, a singer and elementary teacher whom he met while both were attending college, and has a son named James with her. However, the couple divorced, and Davis since 2000 has been married to Jill, Paws' senior vice president of licensing, who has worked there approximately 25 years.

Ironically, Davis did not own cats when he started Garfield because of Carolyn's allergies, but they owned a Labrador retriever named Molly. With Jill, the family has expanded to include children Ashley and Chris; three grandchildren, Chloe, Carly and Cody; cats, Spunky and Nermal; and a dog, Pooky.

I had thought I would enjoy this a lot more than I did. It was entertaining and a quick read. This book includes three full color stories: one each for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I think the one that bothered me the most was the Thanksgiving story. In it the lady vet that Jon takes Garfield to see puts the fat cat onto a diet. But she tells him to eat "fiber" and so Jon starts feeding him a lettuce leaf! My problem with this is the fact cats are carnivores. They don't eat stuff like lettuce! And any decent vet should know this! Now mind you this is just a wee tiny portion of the story and there is much more going on - including Garfield making much nasty trouble. But it really bothered me that a vet who is supposed to care for the health of a feline knows so little about them! Its atrocious! Utterly horrible! Cats are NOT people. Besides people don't lose weight by eating lettuce anyway. I would not trust a vet who doesn't even know what a cat should eat. This ruined the entire story for me.

The Halloween story was good and creepy. Its a tale of ghostly pirates. There are many excellent truly creepy drawings in this one. The art in here actually reminded me of those old vintage horror comics from the 50s or 60s. Lots of action too. There is a scene in here where Garfield is reacting to something but it is not obvious as to what. Not perfect but the best story in the book.

Then the Christmas tale was last. This one was OK but it was the one I found the least interesting as well. I guess I found it kind of dull and it was more about tradition than anything else.

At times Garfield was very mean & cruel. And I don't mean him stealing his master's food. I mean he said nasty things. I didn't like that. And even more shocking was that Odie said a mean thing at one point too!

If you can't tell, I am slowly reading every Garfield book at my library. Trying to space them out, but it's lovely to have these sitting at home for when I don't feel like picking up the "heavier" book I'm reading at the time.

This has three holiday stories, one of which is the Garfield Christmas story that was made into an animated movie, and which is, hands down, my favorite holiday movie. (Yes, even more than A Christmas Story). So, this book is especially good for me.

All three stories also feature Grandma, the best character in any of the Garfield books.
