Barbara J. Miller started writing romances because she was running out of reading material and all her copies of her Georgette Heyer novels were becoming dog-eared. By day she works as a business analyst; by night she runs a retirement home for aged horses, dogs and cats. On the week-ends she spends a lot of time in Regency England, creating heroes and heroines to fight the Napoleonic Wars, shock London society, and set the countryside in an uproar. Her accomplice is her computer-expert husband Don, who is one of her biggest fans.

Barb admits to enjoying the research as much as the writing, and has the books to prove it. France used to be in the dining room and England in the living room. Now that she has taken over the upper story of their old farmhouse as an office at least all the books are one floor. This saves a tremendous amount of time when she is trying to confirm an obscure fact in the middle of the night. Under the name Laurel Ames she produced eight Regency-era historicals for Harlequin, one of which was nominated for a Rita in 1994. Now, she writes as Barbara Miller. She is a member of the Western PA Chapter of Romance Writers of America and also edits The Laurel Wreath newsletter for them. You may email her at scribe@cvzoom.net.

Not much left to say that wasn't covered by this review on Amazon, and definitely not what a reader would expect picking up a Harlequin historical romance. If the author had just left it to focus on Jason's war experience and recovering from his wounds and explored it further, this might have made for an entertaining novel, but I do not recommend this for anyone looking for a romance. It's there, but not well developed (nor is Elizabeth), and it's all centered around one boring party after another and another and another where everyone just talks. Nothing happens. Off to the charity box with you.

I went into this with zero expectations. I hadn’t seen any reviews and have not read any of the author’s other works. Going into it blind was the right choice for me because I really, really enjoyed this!

The only things that made me shave off a half star were 1) the length, but it’s a harlequin historical so the length was a given and 2) the annoyance Jason’s younger sister made me feel. I wanted to throttle her. Like, girl, PLEASE just stop already! But she was a kid, so I’ll forgive her antics.

I thought the love story was really sweet and heartfelt, and I liked that Elizabeth pushed Jason to grapple with his self-loathing and his trauma from the war. Jason’s recovery and re-entry into ordinary life was honestly my favorite part of this. I think Ames did a really good job of portraying a battered, guilt-ridden soldier struggling to hang onto his purpose in life. I really enjoyed that Jason’s progression wasn’t solely reliant on Elizabeth too. He found a dream he was interested in following and was open with her that she may come second to his career at times. It made him feel more real.

And it didn’t detract from the love story at all. Elizabeth loved Jason for Jason and wanted him to pursue his dreams. She knew his pain intimately and she wanted him to find any way to cope with it, even if it meant she would come second to his dreams at times. You could really feel how much she loved and cared for him, and how much he loved her in return.

Highly recommend this one!

I enjoyed this book! Although it felt a little slow for a while, it felt important to take that time to get to know the Jason and Elizabeth. It’s a fun little read that you don’t need to take too seriously. Plus the surprises at the end were a real treat!

Not much to say except the romance fell a bit flat and the characters weren't very likable, in my opinion.
