April 6, 2025The story opens with Daisy, a young duck, watching her Aunt Buttercup sit on four eggs, Daisy's future three cousins and one sibling. Soon, Daisy's cousins hatched, but Daisy's sibling still didn't come out of the egg. Her mother tried to get Daisy to leave the egg, but Daisy refused to leave the egg despite it getting dark and cold outside. Her mother said she would join Daisy until the morning, and the next day, Daisy's brother Pip hatched.
I thought this was a simple and heartwarming book. Its text is not challenging or vocabulary-building, but it is a cute book to build a love for reading and would be especially great for a child who is going to become an older sibling.
"Daisy and the Egg" would be a great book to have in a classroom for younger grades. I especially appreciate that the illustrations tell the story and supply enough details that a child who cannot yet read can follow the storyline independently while also being exposed to text and building print awareness and an understanding of concepts of print.

Theme: Bunnies, Chicks, and Ducklings
This year was the first year I actually had the book to read at Storytime! Every other year it is checked out. I completely understand with the soft, gentle story and pictures. We had a very vocal storytime with lots of quacking, counting and singing but we immediately settled down with our final story. I even heard several ahhs from adults. Beautiful!

I have been reading Daisy books to my daughters since they were tiny. I just love these books. The illustrations are so beautiful and artistic. Daisy is a little duck that is compassionate, curious and empathetic towards her fellow characters. The words are few and poetic and kids seem mesmerized by the pictures and relate to the gentleness and simplicity of the stories. I recommend Daisy books to be on the shelves of all small children.

This is a very sweet storybook telling a story about a young duck taking care of her Auntie and new baby sibling. This would be a great mommy and me read-aloud book, or a nice book for students to read independently. A great book for parents to read to their children if they are young and expecting a new baby.

Very cute pictures, not much of a story though. Probably wouldn't bother with. 3-4+

Daisy got a chance to see her auntie and mother have baby ducks and doing it she had little patience.

I think this is a cute book that has a moral, never give up on something you want.

A lovely story

I'm not quite sure what I think about this book. My toddler clearly likes it a lot, has requested it several times since we brought it home from the library, and just generally enjoys looking at the duck illustrations. I like that Daisy loves her baby brother from the very start. The book depicts a devoted, nurturing sibling relationship. So many "new baby" books start out with an upset older sibling, which can be annoying if the big brother/sister wasn't inclined to be jealous in the first place. So this book is nice in that regard. However, the "some eggs just don't hatch" part and the mother's seeming abandonment of the egg disturbed me,and I didn't like that Daisy had to effectively save her sibling. Obviously I am reading way too much into this, though!

This is a beautiful book. The family is interesting with Daisy having a Mum and and Aunt (open to various interpretations depending on the reader's context) who collaborate to raise each others babies and nurture each other. The book has a firm idea of the child as capable and complexly characterised. The ending was so simple as to be almost an anticlimax to me, but I think it was probably exactly what my young friends (0-5) wanted it to be.
I loved reading this book and will look out for Simmons' other works.

This is a cute book about Daisy a duck, who is excited about having a new sibling, but the egg doesn't hatch with her aunt's eggs. She pitches in and helps the egg by sitting on it for a while. The story gets a little dark when her mama is rather callous about "some eggs never hatch," which is true, but a little harsh for a 4 yr old. The book does have a happy ending, and the kids did enjoy it in storytime, they were just worried for a little while.

I chose to read this book because I loved its companion "Come Along Daisy." This book was well written and has colorful illustrations. The book teaches a good lesson on patience. Daisy was patient with her Mamma's egg when it didn't hatch with the rest of them and still sat on it because she knew that it had to hatch sometime. Even after her mom told her that sometimes they just don't hatch, Daisy had faith that it would.

Another cute picture book, with soft painted illustrations, for kids about to become an older brother or sister. Daisy and her mother are awaiting the arrival of Daisy's cousins and her new little brother or sister. Her cousins hatch first and eventually Daisy gets a new baby brother named Pip. Recommended for ages 6 months - 5 years, 3 stars.

I loved this book. The story of Daisy waiting for her sibling was surprisingly intense. Given that the mother tells Daisy that some eggs do not hatch I thought the book was going in a dark direction. Thankfully her brother hatches and Daisy greets him lovingly. Overall amazing book about a duck waiting for her sibling.

I love Daisy stories. There is a series that follows the life adventures of a young duckling named Daisy. This story tells about how she and her mother welcome a new little brother to the family. This book really highlights Daisy's character. It encourages you to read the other companion books.

This is a cute story about a duck who helps her Mom and Aunt hatch some eggs. Patience and persistence are rewarded when one egg is left unhatched. It's a sweet story with adorbable illustrations. We enjoyed reading this story together.

Listen, folks. If you want levels of cuteness that will make your head explode AND cure cancer, this is your book. Oh my lord, I want to pet Daisy and kiss her tiny little head and carry her with me everywhere I go, forever and ever and ever.

A little too childish for my girls. They kind of just glanced over it, I could see this really working for a mom who is pregnant and trying to reinforce the idea of a baby brother or sister.
