I loved this book!!! It's so great, its about this girl name Kira who gets an internship to go to New York for the summer and work as an intern for the FAMOUS magazine, Skirt! This was the book that the movie, Devil Wears Prada was based on....I think, or it is VERY similar to the movie Devil Wears Prada.

Do you enjoy fashion or dream of living in New York City? Well, Summer Intern, written by Carrie Doyle Karasyov and Jill Kargman is a realistic fiction novel. It takes place in New York City at a magazine studio: Skirt. The protagonist, Kira, who is in her early twenties, is interning at this studio; the whole story is written about Kira’s journey through the fashion field.

One aspect I really enjoyed throughout the whole story is the fact that it is based all around fashion, while including some drama and suspense. One of my dream jobs is to become a model, and reading all about outfits and articles in a magazine were fascinating to me. If you have seen the movie, The Devil Wear Prada, this novel is similar to the storyline of that movie. In addition, if you love shopping or picking out your own outfits, this story would be a blast to read! Every time I picked up the book, I did not want to put it down because of how involved I was with all the fashion trends and events going on in New York City. Who would not want to work in New York City? Secondly, the author’s diction made the novel even more exciting to read. It was so easy for me to picture an entire studio and all the characters. The main character, Kira, used forms of direct and indirect characterization while describing the people at her job. In addition, while reading books, some people look forward to watching the movie after. However, I did not need to see this book’s movie because I could already picture the whole cast, the studio and the late nights in New York City. I enjoyed how it was realistic fiction, because I was able to imagine the real New York City and not a made up town. The diction and imagery were two more aspects of this book that kept me from putting it down, and two more reasons why I strongly recommend this book. Lastly, towards the middle of the novel, Kira was working towards something she really wanted, however she was not pleased with the outcome. This did not stop Kira from trying her best or putting her all in. This encouraged me to never give up. In the St. Christopher’s School play: Kilroy Was Here, there was a song titled, “Never Gonna Give Up” and this song is similar to one of the many themes in this novel. It teaches all readers to never give up and keep trying your best at all times, no matter who is watching or who you are trying to impress. This theme is common, but the way these two authors portrayed it throughout the story was better than other author’s have put it and outstanding. This is another reason why this novel should be on your must read list. In the end, I was upset to finish the book because I actually felt like I was working at Skirt. I enjoyed and pictured every page of this book and look forward to reading some more of the author’s novels.

SUMMER INTERN is definitely going to be the summer beach read of 2007! When I first picked up this book I thought to myself, "Here we go again with the whole THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA theme!" No way! These books have their similarities but are much different, too! There is scandal, mystery, fashion, mean girls, and a really nice pair of Blahnik shoes involved! What girl doesn't want to read a book like that?

Kira gets her dream job at the high profile fashion magazine, Skirt. But did Cinderella get Prince Charming without a few bumps in the road? Uh, no! During the course of the book Kira even meets her own Prince Charming at a club--or at least she thinks she does.

Daphne is a fellow intern at the magazine, but she just happens to be the daughter of the owner of the entire corporation! Kira stays late, works very hard, knows a lot about fashion, and is super nice to everyone--but Daphne doesn't like her because she is a threat to the real dream job...being the intern of the editor-in-chief of the magazine!

After finding out who wins the coveted internship, things get worse. At the end of the book something ties the whole story together, the mean girls get what they deserve, and something VERY unexpected happens! You will just have to read this amazing novel to find out the rest of the story that is also about more than finding the perfect pair of shoes for an upcoming cover!

“Summer Intern” by Carrie Karasyov and Jill Kargman is another chick lit frothy concoction aimed at teen vogue reading young adults probably. However, it scratches my chick lit itch very successfully because though frivolous, it is well written. In the novel, young college student Kira wins an internship at Skirt, a top notch fashion magazine in NYC. The other interns include a brat pack of Daphne the owners daughter. Of course, Daphne gets all the choice assignments, but Kira the admirable workhorse gets the admiration of all and (sorry for the spoilers) the man in the end. I thought the novel would be similar to their other novel, “The Right Address”, but it wasn’t. Very Devil wears Prada but the heroine is more likeable than DWP’s Andrea. If you don’t mind reading fluff, read this fluff!

Kira eats, drinks, and breathes fashion. And she gets the dream job she's always wanted--summer intern at her favorite magazine. But all that glitters is not gold, and Kira learns the hard way in this novel.

How I Came To Read This Book: I think I read about it from a contest I entered and needed to fill a book order for free shipping, so I picked this one as I'd read two other adult books by the same authors.

The Plot: Kira is from Philly and excited to live the big life in NYC with an internship she has at a fashion magazine. Of course, existing heirarchies show up when the heir to the magazine, Daphne, rampages through the office with her minions leaving Kira with the short end of the stick. Romance and bitchy subplots follow.

The Good & The Bad: I think this was probably one of my most disappointing reads in 2007. The book is one part Mean Girls (the characters are ripped right off the screen), one part Devil Wears Prada (hideous magazine job anyone?), and one part Gossip Girl (NYC frenemies), which adds up to one very unoriginal book. It was painful to read at times, especially when it came to the faux slang and overall bitchiness. I will credit the book with being slightly less scandalous than the majority of smut out there that passes for young adult fiction these days, but unlike the books above, particularly Mean Girls, the book lacks any sarcasm - instead presenting a world where bitchiness and backstabbing are de riguer rather than despicable.

The Bottom Line: Skippable.

Anything Memorable?: No.

50-Book Challenge?: Book #34 in 2007.

If you love fashion and you are wondering how it feels to be an intern to a stylist or a famous magazine, this book is for you.

It was a fun and good book to read. We girls love books that tell us stories about fashion, style, what to wear and what nots with a love story on the side. Prada anyone? I was curious on how the story will work out because I do dream about entering the industry, too. I wonder how it really feels to be in it ala Devil Wears Prada.

Another thing girls will enjoy in this book is the clique or the social groups that is always evident in young adult literature. We love learning new fierce lines ala Mean Girls. As usual, we are routing for the protagonist to oust the antagonist and prove herself worthy in the fashion industry.

I guess it also shows the competitiveness in the fashion industry and also how it is easier to enter the industry when you have connections. Admit it. It's true. But don't get me wrong. I am not generalizing. But there are those cases. I think it happens in other industries, too.

Anyway, this book is perfect for the summer as the title suggests and for those fashion savvies.

I dont know.
I found this book to be very poorly written.
It was more aimed toward 12 and 13 year olds rather than adults.
The language was very simple and the slang was too much to bear.
Within almost every sentence there would be slang for something. Being a teenager I was able to pick up some things like "BRB" and "LOL" but sometimes the slang would get so complex that it would have been easier to just put the original word.
I also thought all charachters, including the protagonist, were all two-dimentional. No one changes, and no one grows.
Also, the whole book was a stereotype. I'm not sure if that's how it was supposed to be or not, but I did not enjoy it.
I basically finished the book only because I started it. I can see why the book store was selling it for $2. (That's the price I bought it at.)
I would definetly not reccomend this novel to anyone. Maybe, years from now, when my daughter is 12 I'll get her to read it. But to people who actually enjoy reading, this is not a good one.
Sorry to be so harsh. My review, my opinion.

I read this just because I wanted to catch up with my reading for the month and this was a short book. I never let myself do that, but I figured that it was okay. I enjoyed this book. I didn't love it though. It had it's usual contemporary flaws in my eyes. It was short and really fast paced so it skimmed over a lot of parts that I would have loved to know more about. It always bothers me with the OMG love at first sight thing. She was going to college time to stop being naive. The Matt thing wasn't a huge shock to me. The theft part did kinda surprise me. I thought it was kinda funny how everyone was practically going to an ivy school. It was pretty predictable, but enjoyable though. It reminded me a little bit of The Devil Wears Prada. It always shows the other editors as being such great characters. I think they were probably my favorite characters in the whole book.

Kira wins an internship with Skirt magazine by entering her sketch into a contest. When she comes, she feels out of place, but she is determined to work hard and do things to try and get an internship with the editor-in-chief. She has a crush on a boy who appears to be with Daphne, her arch-nemesis. Her life is not as glamorous as she thought it would be, but it does appear to have its perks.

I didn't like this book, but maybe just because I don't like shallow subjects or the emphasis on vanity. She has good goals and isn't unintelligent or lazy, so it makes her a little more admirable than most girls portrayed in these types of novels. The situations are unrealistic and seemed to be geared towards marketing to girls rather than creating something of real substance.

Kira has just started a summer internship at Skirt magazine, only THE best fashion magazine there is. The summer before her freshman year at Columbia should be a time to soak up as much experience as she can and get to know the city, but the drama at the magazine kind of takes over. Determined to be the best intern and win the coveted editor-in-chief internship, Kira has a setback when she realizes that her biggest competition is Daphne Hughes, the daughter of the publishing magnate who owns the magazine. It looks to be a long summer...

I really liked this chick-lit for teens. It was a quick read that kept my attention throughout.

I really, really should have looked a little more deeply into this book before I decided I needed to read it. I read the book Wolves in Chic Clothing, by the same authors, and loved it. I thought I would find more of the same with this one. If only I had noticed that it was a young adult book. I forced myself to read it anyhow, because I'm not one to quit in the middle of reading a book. It took about 2 hours and was pretty much a complete waste of time. If I were 12, I am sure I'd love it.

A very fast read. Fun, enjoyable. Absolutely no depth or meaning, however. I doubt I would have read it had I had anything better to do. It tells the story of a superficial fashionista looking to make her mark in the fashion industry by way of an internship at a magazine. The character development is predictable, and many of the characters aren't very likable as a result of the shallowness of their personalities. The ending is quick, sweet, and once again, highly anticipated.

This book had me hooked on the first page. The main character, Kira, is amazing! She was outgoing, har-workng, she didn't take crap, fun, fashionable, what's not to like? Of course there was drama in this book! Tons and tons. Work drama, boy drama, cat fights, there was enought drama to go around. I thought this book would be alike Devil Wears Prada, but no, I was wrong. Her evil boss wasen't in it a lot, and this book had a whole different story. It was great.

I loved Summer Intern, it was witty, funny, and told the story of a girl with lots of grit, whatever that is. Kira needs to work hard for what she believes in and hopefully it will take her even farther than where she wants to go. But when she comes in to Daphne Hughes territory (Skirt magazine) with nothing but her style and her heart on her sleeve, she should've expected war when she brought down the princess' territory with a lot more than a snap of her fingers.

I loved this book! It was an easy/cute read about fashion in New York. Something any fashionista would love, even though it is geered towards a younger audience. It had a mix of the Devil Wears Prada and Mean Girls, but I love it none the less. It even inspired me to work even harder at my summer internship in a fashion company!

2008- This was a quick fluffy read about a teen that wins an internship at a NYC fashion magazine. My problem with the authors is that they never develop any back story to their characters. Also, the writing is so ""trendy"" that it doesn't age very well. It's not horrible, but it's really mindless.

This was such a good book. My sister just picked it up at the shelves a the library so I said What the hey I'll read it just for kicks. And I realized it was such a good book. It's like when of those sit back and relax books that are just enjoyable. It makes you think twice about your fashion sense! Good book! Love Gabe and Teagan. And the yummylicious James haha!

Loved this book. The heroine felt super natural and real to me, none of that over posh sappy profile that usually dominates chick lit stories.

Her adventures in magazine world were really inspiring, though I'm not sure I would have guts to work that hard not knowing that it will be rewarded in the end.

I am very glad I discovered Carrie Karasyov.

It was an entertaining enough story, but the writing was atrocious. It felt like the authors were trying way too hard to fit in with current slang, but it just didn't work. And I didn't get a sense of the personality of the main character at all, or anything about her, her appearance, her family, anything. It was all about other people. Not a great book.

I picked this book for a book report so I just glanced at it and it did make me want to read it and when I did I can say that it was a good book kind of predictable so I think it needed a twist in my opinion to make it more interesting either way the rest was really good it wasn't that short or long good for teenagers I would say.

Memorable characters and decent writing, but the plot was only average. The story was fairly predictable, but not completely corny. Overall, it was an okay book. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it.

I don't have a lot to say about this book because it's all a girl could ask for, love, fashion, drama and fun! I knew it that Kira was got to end up with James, it's obvious. Plus, I hated Daphne. She was such a brat!! :)

It was really cute and it was a breezy, light read with nothing explicit. Although it was predictable and sometimes didn't have the best writing, the characters were likable and real. We need more not crappy books like this with heroines who aren't whiny and actually get something done.
