My main job was to organize the launch party as well as coordinate the entire travel itinerary as well as see to all the needs of the Guest of Honor: actress Sharon Stone. The party was held at the Radisson Hotel in Moscow. The challenge, well one of many challenges, was that the two owners of the hotel--American Paul and Chechnyan Umar--were battling each other for control of the hotel and they despised each other. (They each had a fleet of bodyguards because they thought they were going to kill one another.) In addition, they both wanted to spend as much time with Sharon Stone as possible. It was my job to deal with this tricky situation. I did the best I could running interference. The event went off pretty smoothly. (I only feared for my life once, when I made the mistake of reprimanding the wrong paparazzi, who it turned out, wasn't paparazzi.) Then six weeks later, after Sharon was long gone, right outside of the hotel, Paul was assassinated--shot several times by one of his own bodyguards. They never found out who ordered the hit. It remains a great 'mystery' (wink, wink.)(less)

“So tell us, Oscar, how the hell could you survive life in that giant Gap ad aka San Fran? It’s so lily-white and boring there, the place is, like, covered in chinos.”
Carrie Doyle Karasyov, Wolves in Chic Clothing

“I have seen the moment of my greatness flicker, and I have seen the eternal Footman hold my coat, and snicker, and in short, I was afraid.”
T.S. Eliot, The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and Other Poems

“You can always count on a murderer for a fancy prose style.”
Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita

“We can know only that we know nothing. And that is the highest degree of human wisdom.”
Leo Tolstoy, War and Peace

“Some things are too terrible to grasp at once. Other things - naked, sputtering, indelible in their horror - are too terrible to really grasp ever at all. It is only later, in solitude, in memory that the realization dawns: when the ashes are cold; when the mourners have departed; when one looks around and finds oneself - quite to one's surprise - in an entirely different world.”
Donna Tartt, The Secret History

“In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on.”
Robert Frost
