Rise of the Fallen #1

My Soul to Keep

Rate this book
Product Description
Ever have one of those bad ideas just pop into your head? You know the ones. They seem like a great idea at the time, but if you had stopped to think about it a moment…

I’m talking about those ideas where you just seize the moment and do what your heart tells you to. Then, after the dust settles and you get bandaged up, your parents say, “What the hell were you thinking?”

“But, Dad, I wasn’t!”

I had one of those moments.

I guess if you want to be technical, I had a whole chain of those moments leading up to the big bang moment. The problem was I didn’t have anyone standing around saying, “What the hell were you thinking?”

The moral of this story?

There are several.

First, stores don’t sell black candles for a reason. They’re bad news. If you happen to come across one in the mall that sells questionable items…walk away. Trust me on this one. Black candles are bad.

Second, always know what you want out of life. Coasting along, not caring about anything will get you into trouble. Maybe more than you can handle.

Lastly, if someone offers to grant you your fondest wish, wish for something you really, truly want. Wish for something that will make the world a better place or you a better person. Never ever wish to be a monster…

This is one of Hayden's best stories so far. Full of his trademark wit and humor, My Soul to Keep is his first young adult novel (and first of the Rise of the Fallen series!). Of course it slips into the paranormal genre as well and we get an added bonus of some romance! There are some wonderful tender scenes that had me sniffling. The characters will keep you laughing through an action packed, twisted plot.
Have your tissues handy. If you're not laughing so hard you cry at Hayden's wit and humor, you'll be sniffling over his heart wrenching tale of young love.

This isn't my first Sean Hayden book, but I think it's his best so far. Hayden tells a story of high school/teen angst which becomes complicated when the main character, Connor, makes an ill-advised deal: his soul for his fondest wish. When he figures out a way to sort of 'game' the deal, he becomes immortal - and incredibly powerful.

Then he falls in love.

I got pulled into the story at some point, and I loved the way Hayden connects with his teenaged characters, with their emotions, with their concerns and their priorities, and with their insecurities. It's the characters that, for me, drove this story, because they are that well drawn.

I am a fan of YA fantasies, and of horror novels, and this one combines the trappings of both in a manner that was totally satisfying. If this sort of work is your cup of tea, then you'll enjoy this fun, touching, and at times downright scary novel!

At first I didn't think I would like this book but once I started to read it, I really started too. A interesting twist to the "Angel" and "Demon" idea but also a little dash of wish making.

I will be looking for the 2nd one in the series.

When I see a young adult paranormal book, I know what to expect. There's a definite formula that's fairly predictable. My Soul to Keep busts some of those stereotypes, and does it in a witty and charming way. The world Hayden creates is filled with the unexpected, but my favorite thing about the story is just how quickly the abnormal becomes acceptably mundane. That's where the author's sense of humor comes in, making what could be trite in less skilled hands into a funny and delightful ride where, despite what we're taught to expect, things still aren't quite as predictable as the wisdom of the ages dictates.

The protagonist, a 15-year-old named Connor, makes an ill-advised deal with a demonic-like being in exchange for his soul. He's smarter than he looks, and quickly figures out a way to outwit the deal, or so he thinks. Along the way we meet the usual assortment of supernatural beings (the running gag about sparkling vampires had me laughing every time) and a few unexpected creatures and powers.

Just about every young adult novel is a coming-of-age story and this one's no different. We have the requisite bratty sister, the mean kids in PE, the beautiful and mysterious new student, plenty of jealousy and rivalry, and a good twist at the end that I should have seen coming, but didn't. Kudos to the author for such a fun (and funny) book.

You’ve seen the title before, right? It’s not the same book. I have to admit, the title is slightly used but it actually goes along with the story extremely well and I can’t imagine another title that would fit as appropriately. For a quick, action urban fantasy/paranormal romance story, My Soul to Keep is fun, unique and has a surprisingly exciting ending. I can’t wait for the next one ;)

Connor is a 15 year old self-described loner. His parents both work so his typical day consists of coming home from school, faking through his homework and then jumping on his PS3 all before his pain-in-the-ass sister comes home from cheer leading and disrupts his quiet “me time”. But on one such day, Connor gets a “wacky” idea to perform a ritual involving a black candle, a contract written in his blood and an oath spoken out loud to no one in particular. He’s just promised his soul for a wish and he has no clue where the idea to do this came from. Turns out, it didn’t just pop into his head all on its own.

I was originally interested in reading and reviewing this story because I wanted to read a romantic hero’s POV actually written by a guy. I wanted to see if there was difference between a female author and a male author. Honestly, I really couldn’t tell a difference but it definitely lend credibility to Connor’s POV.

At first, the story kind of lost me with its “teenager-isms” (example: fart fan – the fan in the bathroom) but after the first chapter the story picked up and took off very quickly. I’ve noticed that first books in UF series tend to be heavy in world building. My Soul to Keep stayed balanced and evenly paced with the added humor, crazy action and some light romance.

As for the characters, I really fell for Connor. At first we get the picture that he’s just a typical teenager coasting through life. But then we see that there’s more to him in the second chapter when he realizes that he really doesn’t want to lose his soul; that it’s pretty important to him. Then he meets his girl, is able to be himself around her, and he gives selflessly to her. It’s pretty gosh darn cute! I’m still trying to figure out Clarisse, his mentor, but for an “older, much older” girl, she’s going to be hard to pin down. Personally, I’d really like to see more of Connor’s “rents”. Oh, and that bad-ass Fallen, Darius; I absolutely loved the kick-butt fighting Fallen.

The world Mr. Hayden has built is freaking outstanding! Okay, I love angel stories! What Mr. Hayden has done to the hierarchy of angels is really unique. He has two types, the Chosen and the Fallen. When you think of the Fallen, you think Lucifer and demons typically. And in this case, that’s kind of true. But Mr. Hayden has broaden it a bit to say that the Fallen believe in free will and the Chosen believe that if you don’t do what you’re told or if it doesn’t fit the mold, then it must be destroyed. Both groups were created by the Creator (or God, I’m thinking) and loved by him. But they fundamentally don’t get along. And they do bump into each other from time to time. Add in some vampires of the pop cultural nature and this book really is a good time, not a heavy religious tome I’ve somehow made it out to be. I tend to get carried away with my angels….. sorry!

I asked Mr Hayden when the second Rise of the Fallen is coming out and he said he’s hoping at the end of this year. Between now and then, I have a discussion question for you: If anyone can tell me who the good guys and the bad guys are between the Fallen and Chosen, you’ll get a gold star (I’ll probably disagree, though).

Be careful what you wish for…:

It’s a great thing to fall in love. It’s an absolute devil of a thing to jeopardise the one you love. What price would you pay to have granted any wish you could imagine?

Connor, the very definition of an average guy, enjoys not much more in life than playing video games… and loathes not much more in life than algebra! In a moment of manic lunacy, he decides to make a deal with…the devil?… he has no idea. He’s just bored. And he has a black candle. And with a drop of blood scribbled over a randomly composed ‘contract’ to trade his soul for a wish, he has a moment of ‘crazy’.

Up to the kerb, straddling a throbbing motorbike, roars a beautiful young woman, Clarisse. Impatiently, she has only one thing she wants to know from Connor… ‘what d’ya want?’

Clarisse is one of the Fallen. And much to her amazement, shock and – well, horror – Connor asks for that which should never be asked for…

…To be one of the Fallen.

Clarisse, reluctantly, must grant him that wish. After all, a deal’s a deal. And now she has to guide him through the complex structure of his new role. But she doesn’t do so with good grace. In fact, she has nothing but malice for he whom she calls the “worm”, who dared to ask for such a thing…

However, Connor’s life takes a bright turn, as Jessica, blind and beautiful, walks into his high school and into his life. Whilst very carefully courting this jewel in the classroom, Connor must deal with the training which the demon Clarisse forces him through, the undertaking of his new obligations, and still of course…algebra.

His powers grow. Rather too fast for comfort. Algebra is no longer a problem. Athletics come easy. Nothing, for that matter, is a problem and everything, for that matter, comes easy. Except that he can see vampires. He can see witches. He can see everything he'd rather not see, but must learn to accept that nothing is as it seems. His first task as a Fallen seems, like everything else, easy enough. But [without giving up spoilers]… there may be some consequences of an unpredictable and quite dangerous nature to deal with further down the line.

Ever said ‘I don’t know my own strength’?

That’s Connor’s problem…he doesn’t.

This is a belly-laugh funny tale of an average boy made special. And how he copes with the terms of his blood contract. How he copes with an overwhelming desire for the beautiful Jessica. And how he copes with the sweet, snarky wench, Clarisse. It’s a swift read because you just want to keep on laughing at the misadventures of this errant teenager. This line is just one gem out of many: “I wanted to seem intelligent, so I kept my mouth shut” – and let’s have another: “Only one thing travelled faster than light, gossip”…

Excellent!

My Soul To Keep is funny as all Hell broke loose, imaginative, cleverly developed, and littered with bizarre surprises. Recommended.

“The soul is not where it lives, but where it loves.” ~H. G. Bohn

Be careful what you wish for. Maybe young Connor Sullivan should have though of that very adage when he is given the chance to have a wish granted. Oh, of course he will argue that he was under a lot of pressure at the time and speaking of time, he did not have a it to make a “better” choice if there was one. He actually thought he was being clever, time will tell. If you had not figured out from the title, the “soul" has something to do with the whole wish situation. So you can only image what his answer was...well not really, if you read the book you can find out. Just to give you a heads up, you will have a hard time not reading the whole book as soon as you can. Translation: don’t plan on doing your taxes, shopping and/or cleaning while trying to read it.

It maybe considered a young adult read, but, this coming from someone way past the young adults stage, it is entertaining. It has laugh out loud (yes lol) humor, sweet love and even some super natural action. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, there is a murder mystery too. See its filled with cool stuff. Who would have thought right? Great characters that I must say, do come “alive” as you read. Being a fan of the author already, I am still pleasantly surprise when I read another one of his creations and find that I enjoyed it.

Conner made a split decision that would effect the rest of his life. Some things you cant change, you make the decision and you can never can go back, Conner learned this the hard way. His intentions were never to harm anyone, he only wanted to undue something he wasn't sure how he did in the first place.

I loved the dynamic between all of the characters. Claire was my favorite she is sassy, and mean but you can feel through the author how she feels about Conner. Jess is sweet and I knew she had a secret. I secretly loved her dad also. Caelyn is a nasty little thing but I think she really does care about her brother. I cant wait to read more about her.

I loved this book! It was such a breath of fresh air. This is a unique story unlike any that I have ever read before. I LOVED it!! It ends in somewhat of a cliffhanger, you do get closure however it is left open for there to be more story told. I read this book in one day. The author had me hooked from the get go. He did an amazing job at describing everything that was going on and every emotion that Conner was going through. Even though the story is told from Conner's point of view you are able to feel what the other Characters are feeling as well. I was able to picture the whole thing in my head in great detail. This book is at the top of my list of favorite books. I think that it is a great book for anyone of any age! I cant wait to read what happens next.

I started this book, and could not put it down. I had to finish it, and did so in less than a day. I cannot rememebr the last time I read a full novel that quickly. The characters were well balanced and seemed ... well, lifelike. There was a real sense of presence in every page. Sean Hayden does an incredible job at building the character-reader relationship. The dialogue and exchanges that occur were for lack of a better word flawless.

The paranormal angle, the family and social dynamic of highschool and the delicately handled romance all come together to form what I consider to be a YA Masterpiece. Don't let the YA aspect put you off, it is a book that can easily be enjoyed by all ages, and has something to offer everybody.

I cannot wait to read the second in the series, there is a flow to the tale and the style of writing that will hypnotize you and hold you captive right the way through to the final page.

To summarize in but one word... unputdownable.

My Soul to Keep is the first in the Rise of the Fallen series by Sean Hayden. The first thing you notice about this book is the author’s quick wit and knack for well timed sarcasm. He has a great ability to lighten up a dark story. Hayden also manages to pull different elements of supernatural, action and romance into a seamless story that keeps you intrigued from start to finish! I was pleasantly surprised that there were some tear jerking tender moments! I had the opportunity to read some of Sean’s earlier work years ago and I was excited to come across him again. This book did not disappoint at all. I am eagerly awaiting the next book to see what more trouble Conner can manage to get into.

One of the best fantasy stories I've ever read. I started this book something past 6pm. As others here said, you cannot literally shake your eyes off it while you're reading. Its now midnight, and I've literally devoured it. Can't wait for a sequel.

Narration flows perfectly. Characters are well portrayed, and most importantly... what an interesting ending. (I won't make spoilers :) )

Sean, thanks for this beautiful book.

a great story with very , i dont really know if human would be the right word to describe the characters in this book but its the word im going with to describe the personality of the main and supporting characters of this book. its got action suspence, great character devolopment and rather relatable character, would also like to add the engrossing and entertaing choice of the main character and all the rewards and conscequences that follow i chose this wording in my review in the hopes of not spoiling a good story for other readers. and if your questioning yourself on getting this book dont its great damb story that youll enjoy.

I loved this book! It was a refreshing new take on the so popular paranormal genre. I loved the twist of how people came to be the paranormal so much and enjoyed how different the story is from anything else in the genre. It was great to have a super interesting story with so many relatable high school moments. I really enjoyed that it was told from a boy’s POV as so many in this genre have female leads. This book is a must read for its heart warming moments, bits of teen romance and humor throughout!

My Soul to Keep by Sean Hayden is book one of the Rise of the Fallen series and it is a very unique take on Angel mythology. In fact, I think I can say with complete confidence you've never read anything like it! This story is about a teenage boy named Connor Sullivan and how one night he sold his soul for one wish, however idiot that he is, he thinks it's a joke. Well, at least he does until a very beautiful woman riding a motorcycle shows up to grant said wish. To outsmart her, he wishes to become like her. So Connor, average, idiotic, stupid high school sophomore that he is, becomes a Fallen. What does this mean? Well it means that he is no longer human, he is immortal, and he is - for lack of a better word - a demon.

So it's been a while.....no let me rephrase that....it's been a really long time since I read a book from a male perspective and I have to say that not only was it refreshing but absolutely hilarious! I thought going into this book that it probably wouldn't be very funny and it would be more on the serious side. But I forgot to take note that the main character is a teenage boy who is a sophomore in high school no less. So with that in mind, the humor is all guy humor, very dry and very funny, like laugh out loud and wake my husband up in the middle of the night funny! Don't believe me? The below quote is during one of the more serious parts of the book. Connor is trying to learn how to control his image, more on that later, but his teacher tells him to focus on being human. Here's what he comes up with...
"It's not about pretzels, it's about being human. Finding what you really like, doing it, and remembering what it is you love. I just happen to love soft pretzels."
Me too, Connor, me too!

Connor Sullivan was your average high school boy and well he still is despite the fact that he is now an immortal demon. Connor is quick-witted, smarter than he looks, and just your average guy. Clarisse or Clair is a Fallen, and she is the one responsible for teaching Connor how to be one. She's kind of mean, flirty, and from Connor's description very pretty. Then there's Jessica, the new girl at Connor's school who happens to be blind and like Connor. There's a bit of a love triangle going on between the three of them with poor Connor, like every other male his age, completely clueless.

The plot revolves around Connor learning about his new form and what he must learn to do with it. Throw in some mysterious murders into the mix and you've got this book. Lots of action, lots of humor, and a bit of romance (and I do mean just a bit!). Overall I couldn't sit it down. It's a short, quick read that kept my attention from the first word to the last and as soon as I was finished I immediately picked up and read book two! It is that good! If you enjoy angel mythology, urban fantasy with lots of action, then I think you will be pleasantly surprised with this book!

I received a copy of this ebook from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This was a fun, fast read with lots of action and great characters. Connor is a sarcastic teen with a quick wit and a sharp tongue, but he’s got a heart, which is his redeeming quality right out of the gate. When he says a mysterious chant he isn’t sure where he heard, he’s offered the opportunity for immortality. Connor turns it upside and asks for the one thing no one has asked for before, to become one of the Fallen, those with the powers to grant immortality to others. To say Connor doesn’t know what he’s gotten himself into is an understatement. Along with and annoying younger sister, clueless parents, and a snarky Fallen to help train him, Connor navigates the waters of his new “life.” What he doesn’t count on is falling in love with a mortal.

Plot
The plotting was solid and there were more than a couple of unexpected twists. The pacing was constant, never dragging. The story mixes equal parts paranormal adventure and romance, with a hint at a love triangle, that’s well enough done to not be annoying. My only complaint is the ending. Even though this is a paranormal where anything goes, I thought it was just a little too neatly resolved.

Characters
Connor is well-developed and a delightfully refreshing protagonist in the genre. The author brings a male perspective to young adult romance that fully illustrates the awkwardness and self-doubt of teen boys. Clarisse, as Connor’s unwilling teacher in all things Fallen, is also fully fleshed out and lends an element of angst that is anything but pathetic. Her feelings for Connor or clear, but she’s tough and determined, with a hint of anger thrown into the mix. By far, she’s my favorite character in the series to date. The remaining characters, including Connor’s sister, friends, and even his love interest, Jessie, fell a little flat for me, though.

What I Enjoyed About MY SOUL TO KEEP
1. Connor. His sarcastic wit made him easy to like, but his big heart made him an even better character that I came to love.
2. Clarisse. She’s totally kick-ass, take-no-prisoners, with a streak of vulnerability that easily made her my favorite character.
3. The Fallen. I love this twist on the paranormal genre. Looking forward to reading the second book in the series.
4. World Building. The author did quite a bit of world building, developing nuanced rules to create his own take on this aspect of the paranormal, creating a different stage upon which to set his characters.
5. Twists. There were a fair number of twists that kept the story engaging.

Bottom Line
A fun twist on the paranormal genre with intriguing characters and a fast-paced storyline.

Book 1 in the Rise of the Fallen series, My Soul to keep is a fantastic start to what promises to be a wonderful series. I completely recommend reading this book, and can’t wait to read the rest of the series. And remember be careful what you wish for, as you might just get it!

Opening Scene:

Ever have one of those bad ideas just pop into your head?

The Review:

Ever done something so stupid you wish you could take it back? Either that or slap your hand over your mouth before you say it? Connor Sullivan wishes just that, after he accidently sold his soul for a single wish.
The stunningly gorgeous, but rather temperamental Clarisse, is not impressed when Connor tries to save his soul. It’s not her problem he signed a contract in blood, one wish for one soul and that soul being his.
What begins as a simple exchange turns the lives of Connor and Clarisse upside down, especially when the beautiful but blind new girl comes to town, and Connor can’t help but fall for her. As romance blossoms, Connor learns about his new destiny, and how one simple act, one simple wish can change the lives of many.

Notable Scene:

“Connor Sullivan?” She made my name a question. I nodded dumbly. “Come on, let’s get this over with.”
“Excuse me?”
“Look, I don’t have time for this. I have three more after you. What do you want?”
“Excuse me?” The word hooker flashed through my mind.
“Did you, or did you not, sign a binding contract offering your soul in exchange for one wish? If I have the wrong Connor Sullivan who lives at 1432 Willow Street, I apologize.” She rolled her eyes and threw up her arms, apparently more than a little annoyed.
“That was real?”
“Yes, completely. Now I haven’t got all night. What do you want? Make it good. The price is a little hefty I’ll admit, but it’s worth it.”
Realization dawned on me. My knees went weak, but I managed to stay on my sketchers. “This isn’t some sort of joke?”
“Nope, one wish for one soul, that was the deal.”

I discovered Sean Hayden´s work through Jen Wylie when she was looking for reviewers for their anthologies of stories Flashy Fiction & Other Insane Tales 1&2. I´ve read some short stories written by Sean Hayden and I loved his writing, humor and witty. He created wonderful stories in just a couple of pages so I was eager to read a whole book written by him and I have to say that My Soul to Keep fulfilled all my expectations.
The setting for the story is an average city where everything seems normal till Connor, the main character decides to make a pact with the evil just for fun. I love the fact that he does it just for the fun of doing something dangerous and because he is bored because that is something teenage boys really do these days. The whole story mixes ordinary things that can actually happen in real life with paranormal traces creating a blend that makes the story completely fascinating and believable.
I loved reading a story narrated by a male character, especially a teenager since almost every book I´ve read is narrated from a female point of view or from a male point of view where the author never seems to really make me believe the story is narrated by a man. So I was completely hooked while reading the story from Connor´s perspective. My Soul to Keep is a story full of fantasy, mystery and some romance touches which made it more appealing from my point view because I am sucker for love stories. My favourite character was Clarissa, I really preferred her over Jessica because she is really mysterious and I think she will play a bigger role in the next book.
I love the author´s writing style. It is refreshing, strong, full of humour and sarcasm with doses of reality. I had a blast reading it and I think I am addicted to Sean Hayden´s narrative. He has been able to create something refreshing and original in a genre where that´s almost completely impossible. I can´t wait to read the next book to see what is going to happen.

My Soul To Keep was a wonderful story. It put a new but familiar twist on angels and demons, or rather the Chosen and the Fallen. The book was well written, and the characters were well drawn out. The story kept me entertained till the very end, and even wanting more.

The book was written nicely, and made for a fast paced read. Sean was pretty straight forward with the idea of the story, and subtle with hints of things that might happen next, which made the book all the more mysterious. The book was just really funny. Sean incorporated humor into the story like it was nobody's business. It was hilarious!

All of the characters were fun to discover, especially the main character, Connor, and Clarisse, his mentor. They are a funny pair and make for a good chuckle when they are together. I also liked the idea of Connor and Jessica being together. They are adorable, and all of their scenes together make me smile.

All in all, the story was very interesting and I barely put the book down while I was reading. It was funny and suspensful. Sean did a really good job at telling this story, and I can't wait to read the next book, Your Soul To Take. I have to give this book 5 out of 5 stars!

Let me start off by saying that this book was freaking awesome! I've had this book sitting in my kindle app for about 2 years...don't judge. Anyway, I promised myself that I would read and review it, and I'm so glad I did.

My Soul to keep is a different spin on the Demons vs. Angels category, which I find myself reading a lot of lately. The story is told from the POV of fifteen year-old Connor, a teenager who signs his soul over in exchange for his fondest wish. Fondest is actually pushing it though, because being one of the Fallen wasn't exactly what he meant to wish for.

To top it off, he falls in love with one of the Chosen's offspring, and that is another complicated storyline to the story.

Sean Hayden's writing style is a mix of funny mixed with the woes of being a teenager and bratty siblings. The first couple of pages lags a little, but the story picks up right after that. It's a story I enjoyed and the end surprised me a little, but I had a nagging thought that it would end that way.

I honestly did laugh out loud a couple of parts in the story, and may have snorted once or twice...and for that I give My Soul to Keep 4 Platypires.

"My Soul to Keep" started off pretty good and then, I don't know, I got tired of the style of writing. I felt like the writing was very sarcastic and there's only so much I can take. Perhaps if Connor- the protagonist- wasn't so corny, I might have appreciated the writing a little more.

I liked the plot though. It held my attention and even though I had my suspicions about a couple things, in the end I was proven wrong. So it wasn't as predictable as I thought it would be. If you're bored, go ahead and check out this book. If you're in the mood for some paranormal satire (perhaps that word is too strong, it wasn't all that funny) read this book. Or read this book if you just want to read about a boy with raging hormones who wishes to be something out of the ordinary; one of the Fallen.

i didnt know what to expect when i recieved this book to review, but i was very pleased when i began reading it and realised it was right up my alley of genres. After given the chance of having anything in the universe, Connor wishes to be turned into one of the Fallen - a group of soul seeking demons. After his female counterpart, Clarisse, tells him that he must not, under any circumstance, fall in love, especially with a human, he soon finds himself breaking that rule. He meets Jessica, an innocent, pretty blind girl with a secret of her own.
A thrilling, fast paced, action packed read that will keep you guessing until the end.
Fans of the supernatural genre, you will love this!

15-year-old Connor impulsively creates a spell with a black candle and his blood. He makes a wish and grants his soul to whomever will fulfill his wish. When someone shows up to collect on his impulse, Connor figures out how to outsmart the Fallen. At first I thought this book was trying too hard to be cutesy and clever but then I got used to it or it got better. After all there is a fine line between funny and annoying. But once the writing got better, I was liking the book a lot. I liked Connor and I liked this fast paced story. This book ends with a cliffhanger. I look forward to reading the next installment. 4 stars

I have to admit that I wasn't really sure what to expect when I started reading this book. I like that the book is supernatural but believable at the same time. No one is super rich, lives in a mansion, and the interactions at Conner's high school are realistic. It makes it so much easier to relate to the characters and even though you know it isn't real well just maybe. It is a new take on demons and angels which is refreshing and not so full of drama as other books. I look forward to seeing where the characters go from here.
