How long will he last?In this delightful follow up in the GRUMPY MONKEY series, kids see what happens when you stay awake too late!
Jim Panzee is cute even when he’s grumpy. I mean look at that face! He's almost always grumpy though. BUT not tonight! Tonight is his parents’ sleepover party. A party full of termite fishing and bobbing for mangoes and telling stories and more. No sleeping here. Nobody sleeps at a sleepover! Come join Jim, Norman, and the whole family as they stay UP ALL NIGHT! Or try to anyway. :)
I was a tiny bit disappointed to find nothing spooky here. I really thought this book was going to be Halloween themed with that cover. But nope. Nothing scary here. We get party games and good old fashion family fun, teasing, and love though. I loved the brotherly love at the end.
Aside from the cute illustrations, I wasn’t thrilled about this one. He was supposed to be grumpy because he stayed up all night, but it seemed like he was having fun. I mean, who doesn’t love eating termites in the middle of the night?!!
The grumpy monkey went to visit his family for a sleepover. But instead of having a sleepover they stay up al night. The message is you will be grumpy if you stay up all night and don’t get any rest.
Jim Panzee has been invited to a sleepover at his family's home, and Norman invites himself along to experience the 'all night' festivities. The list of entertainments was funny, the drawings first rate. My favorite moment was the family portrait Jim showed Norman when excitedly telling him about the sleepover invite. All were grump-faced except his little brother Tim.
Jim Panzee (I know - the greatest chimp name ever right?) is super excited for the sleepover he is going to have tomorrow at his parent's house with his family. He invites his friend Norman to join them, and hilarity results. I do find it funny that "Grumpy Monkey" is his mom's pet name for Jim. They did all the fun things you do at jungle sleepovers: termite fishing, flea picking, bobbing for mangoes, telling scary then happy stories, and having a midnight feast which wouldn't be complete without jungle punch. Unfortunately they can't all stay up all night, especially because Norman snores really loudly but Jim does make it and then promptly falls asleep. This one was much better than the 2nd book. Recommended for ages 4-8, 3-1/2 stars.
Spent the morning with my 3 yr old niece and she chose our reading selections (after yanking my bookmark out of The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida whose cover she found appealing). Despite having gifted her several of these books, this was my fist time reading anything in the GM franchise.
My expectations were high because I like monkeys and I liked the cover artwork (a sound basis for prejudging any book in my opinion). Getting to read this with my niece was a 5-star experience as she pointed out many a secondary character I likely would have taken for granted (lizards, bugs, a bird I thought might be one of prey that she referred to as a flamingo... ). What can I say about this book? It did not meet expectations, but I did find it charming. I thought GM would revel in his grumpiness, but he's not even aware of it and doth protest every time another character tells him he's grumpy. This wholesale denial of reality has a certain charm and is not an approach to life I found unfamiliar. The illustrations are cute and inviting, but the storyline was... Well, let's just say Jim Panzee (GM's true name) deserves better. Also, he seems too young to live without his family, so where does he live when he's not having a sleepover at his family's tree? Norman's comedic value as "straight man" could have been leveraged to better effect in my less hirsute opinion.
Perhaps you need to be a fan of Grumpy Monkey or someone in a similar vein to appreciate this picture book. Personally, I prefer Bad Kitty to this grumpy character who insists that he is an ape and not a monkey. When Jim Panzee tells his friend Norman about his planned sleepover with his parents, Norman tags along so that he can participate in all the fun activities. To Jim's surprise, his little brother Tim has outstripped him in size. Still, the family does all the typical activities for a sleepover. They fish for termites, pick fleas off one another, bob for mangoes, and tell scary stories. Somehow, when the others fall asleep, Jim and Tim stay awake, and just as Jim closes his eyes, his mother wakes him up. Of course, he's just as grumpy as she predicted that he'd be after having so little sleep. Jim is all set to argue with her once again, but he's too pooped to do so, and starts slumbering once again. The use of a dark palette of colors allows readers to feel as though they, too, are in the jungle, and I'm sure some readers will love this book. For me, it misses the mark for wider appeal because it seems as though the whole thing is set up to show just how grumpy Jim is.
I found Grumpy Monkey Up All Night to be genuinely entertaining. It’s lighthearted, a little chaotic, and has that perfect mix of humor and real emotion that makes these types of stories work. What stood out to me was how well it captured that restless, overly excited feeling of trying to force fun when you're already exhausted. The expressions on Jim’s face in the illustrations say it all. You don’t need a deep explanation the art does half the talking, which I appreciated. It’s not trying to be overly clever or layered, and that’s kind of what I liked about it. It’s honest. Sometimes you’re tired, grumpy, and pretending you’re fine, and that’s a mood a lot of people regardless of age can relate to.
You really have to look closely at the illustrations to get the full impact of this story and be able to tell which character is which from one illustration to the next. It will also be a big help if you have read the other 'Grumpy Monkey' story, as there are references to Jim being a grumpy monkey that won't make any sense otherwise. I can see where this is meant to be a 'make the best of the situation' story, and a 'you always love your family' story, but these concepts aren't really explored very deeply. More it is just about Jim and Norman going to spend the night at Jim's parents, and the different activities they do.
The good thing about the Grumpy Monkey series so far, is I think they give kids a few illustrations of healthy strategies to deal with their emotions. Grumpy Monkey Up All Night was a little different than the previous two books, in that there isn't a clear strategy to dealing with the sibling issues that Jim Panzee is feeling. It just kind of works out in the end. I definitely enjoyed the book, the illustrations and the clear language and think it would be great to share with kids as a fun story about a family sleepover and a conversation starter about how to handle sibling or even issues with close friends.
Jim Panzee is excited for his big family sleepover! Mom, Dad, his older sisters Ann and Nan, and his little brother Tim will all be there! Jim even invites his friend Norman the Gorilla. They can't wait to stay up all night!
This short fiction story book would make a great read aloud for k-2nd. The theme focuses on family and friendship, and how all families can be a little crazy. The plot introduces several conflicts when all the things Jim had planned, don't actually go according to plan. In the end, Jim manages to accomplish his one true goal. The various characters and conflicts make it a great opportunity to read out loud theatrically to students.
Grumpy Monkey is having a sleepover at his parents' house. He is so excited to do fun, sleepover activities and stay up all night long! Except, staying up all night can make a little monkey very grumpy...
A humorous companion book to the other Grumpy Monkey titles. Plays good fun at Grumpy Monkey really being an ape and features quite the assortment of ape sleepover activities. Cute and funny. Good choice for fans of the original book.
Young readers (4+) will enjoy meeting Jim Panzee's family in this addition to the Grumpy Monkey series. With bright, detailled illustrations from Max Lang and a fun 'sleep over' story from Suzanne Lang, this is sure to prompt lots of conversations about the kinds of activities the children enjoy doing with their own families! A lovely addition to the series that would work just as well as a stand alone picture book.
This was okay. I think in all fairness the novelty of the series is wearing off a bit. Though events happening in the story are different, the way Jim Panzee reacts is basically the same every time. It was cute and if a kid is really into monkeys/the Grumpy Monkey series I guess they would enjoy it, but I did not enjoy it as much as previous books.
This is another funny story in the series that features Jim Panzee and his friend Norman the gorilla preparing for a sleep-over. Norman is unfamiliar with this kind of activity and Jim helps explain everything. Jim is so excited he can stay up all night long. The illustrations are hilarious and the story will keep readers laughing. Great read-aloud. Highly recommended for Grades K-2.
I love the whole series of Grumpy Monkey books. These books touch on real emotions that some children experience. What a great way to help children not feel alone in their feelings and what a great way to open discussion about anxiety.
Jim Panzee was looking forward to the sleepover at his parents tree house. All of his family would be there, and lots of fun is planned. Jim loves the idea of no sleeping at the sleepover, but will staying up all night make Jim Panzee a grumpy monkey?
My kids really enjoy these, and the story was cute. They're nice for a read aloud and let the kids see it's ok to be grumpy sometimes and maybe how to get feeling better. We'd definitely pick up more in this series.
Jim Panzee has big plans to stay up all night when his family has a sleepover along with his cousin Norman. They're going to fish for termites, check each other for fleas, and scary stories. love these illustrations
Didn't enjoy the story as much as I did the first two books in the series, but the cover really made my day. So, 3 Stars for the story and 5 Stars for the cover make a very respectable 4 Stars all around.
Eh, not my cup of tea. Although I did enjoy the illustrations. I didn't think it was particularly funny and I was confused why their ape family doesn't sleep together every night... although I'm not an ape expert.
