Recomendo veementemente!

Maybe I’m just not a fan of biography. Or not a fan of this biography. There are no references so we cannot backup or research anything that Pollock has written. It does not convey Moody is a particular light, which is good. But it is more of an outline than a narrative. This happened then this then this. I read it hoping for some insight on the ministry of DL Moody. If I still desire it I should read something much different .

This was a good, concise historical biography. I appreciated how well researched, and documented this book was, and that Pollock really attempted to bring across the full spectrum of Moody's personality.
I suppose one thing I would have liked to see more of was testimonials from people who had experienced the Moody revivals. There were a choice few, but it was somewhat difficult to get a really good feel of just exactly how his ministry came across to the average man, most testimonials quoted were from close acquaintances of Moody and Sankey or of other famous clergy. I like the approach because it therefore means that those quoted have a greater note of authenticity, however, in some respects it could also reflect some level of bias.
There are also a whole lot of historical implications that Moody's ministry was more spiritual than many commonplace evangelicals like to believe, which was only vaguely alluded to. One chapter recounts the event of Moody's 'baptism in the Holy Spirit,' which at the time did not come with the same connotations that it does now (being before the ministry of Charles Parham, or the Asuza street revival initiated largely by William J. Seymour in 1906), however the [then] cultural context of the phrase is not mentioned (most felt that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit was merely a supernatural 'sanctification' which took place, with or without spiritual giftings). There were, however, even in the time preceding Moody's Spiritual Baptism several sects within Christianity, which did believe, and practice similar manifestations to that which occurred in the Pentecostal movement propelled by aforementioned Asuza street revival. Something else mentioned later in the book was the tendency of many of the women to 'faint' at his [Moody's] Cambridge revival, which could easily be noted as similitude of the 'slain in the Spirit' manifestation which has occurred at Pentecostal revivals. Other sources which I've found allude to Pentecostal manifestations occurring in some of Moody's revivals (such as speaking in tongues, and prophesying). In fact Dr. Lester Sumrall in the epilogue of his book 'Pioneers of Faith' tells of meeting an Englishman who had been around for the Moody revivals, and heard Moody, himself, speaking in tongues.
All in all the book was informative, and seemingly quite well researched.
