I'm a children's writer based in Scotland, and most of my fiction is inspired by the Scottish landscape and local legends. I love writing fantasy adventures for 8-12 year olds, including the Fabled Beast Chronicles and the Spellchasers trilogy, but I also love creating stories for other age groups.
I've gone darker and more dangerous in my YA thriller MindBlind.
And I've worked with amazing illustrators on picture books, including a retelling of the Scottish tale of the kelpie, The Secret of the Kelpie, with gorgeous pictures by Philip Longson, and a new fable about Nessie, The Treasure of the Loch Ness Monster, with fabulous artwork by Nataša Ilinčić.
I've written collections of myths and legends, including heroine tales from all over the world in Girls Goddesses & Giants, and Scottish tales in Breaking the Spell and Viking saga tales in The Dragon's Hoard, both illustrated by the wonderful Cate James.
I'm passionate about sharing old stories, creating new ones, and inspiring new young readers and writers. And I'm writing more adventures and retelling more myths, right now!
But I'm also reading... I read a lot of non-fiction, because a lot of my fictional ideas are inspired by folklore and history. I also read a lot of children’s fiction, because kids get all the best stories! And sometimes I remember how old I am, and read books for adults.
I also love discussing books, and answering queries about my books and stories, so please do get in touch. When Jessie and Ben's parents go out to a ceilidh, they leave instructions with the baby-sitter that Jessie, who is just getting over a cold, should be given any kind of food or drink she wants. This leads to a series of amusing misunderstandings, as the toddler, determined to be polite, but unable to pronounce the word "please," finds that everything she requests - orange juice, milk, water - comes with some peas on top! When her ice cream arrives with the same green garnish, the frustrated Jessie has finally had enough. Fortunately, older brother Ben, who has been enjoying the show, is on hand to smooth thing over...

This sweet picture-book from Scottish children's author Lari Don, who is perhaps better known for her First Aid for Fairies series for older children, offers an entertaining exploration of issues of communication and misunderstanding, as experienced by a toddler still in the process of mastering speech. Younger children will enjoy the silly premise, as Jessie becomes more and more frustrated, and the peas keep mounting up. For my part, I appreciated some of the culturally specific details, like the fact that the parents are attending a ceilidh - Orange Juice Peas! is part of Edinburgh-based publisher Floris Books' Picture Kelpies line, intended to promote picture books with Scottish themes - and that the father is dressed in his kilt. I also liked the conclusion of the tale, as Ben, despite his helpless giggling as the misunderstandings unfold, steps in to help his little sister. Humorous and heartwarming, I'd say this was an excellent selection for the younger picture-books set!

What a fun story of miscommunication. Poor little Jessie is just learning to be polite but doesn't quite have the pronunciation down yet for certain words. For Jessie, "please" is pronounced "peas." At dinner, Jessie comes into trouble with the new babysitter. "Orange juice peas!" which the babysitter reluctantly gives her: orange juice with peas. We continue down this road until Ben finally explains his little sister's desires. This will get older siblings laughing as they relate to the mispronounced words of their younger siblings.

This book is a cute one! It is about a little girl who is just starting to use please and thank you. Her babysitter comes over and every time Jessie asks for something to eat she says "Peas" after it. For Example "Orange juice peas." Orange juice with peas is exactly what she gets! Children would relate well with this book!
