Always the Bridesmaid #1

Always the Last to Know

Rate this book
Wearing a Maid of Honor dress that very well makes the South want to rise again, Jess Reynolds is prepared to walk down the aisle at her best friend's wedding. It's just that things keep getting in the way, like a sex-crazed coworker, an annoying brother-of-the-bride, and a handsome and horribly charming friend posing as the Best Man. As it turns out, Jess might just be the last one to know everything, including the workings of her own heart.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a freebie on Amazon so I wasn’t expecting much… but I had a great time reading it.

It’s a short, feel good book and just what I needed. It’s realistic and the characters could be any normal people. There weren’t any tortured characters with dark pasts, nobody obscenely rich and I didn’t want to strangle any of the characters due to stupid mistakes on their part. To sum it up I’d say it was refreshing.

I’d definitely buy Crystal Bowling’s next book (I’m hoping there will be one?) when I’m looking for a pick-me-up read.

This wasn't bad for a freebie. I found some of the dialogue really funny and I did like the characters. The plot was pretty lame and a typical/cliché friends to lovers romance, but it was still a cute read.

This was a delightful free read from Amazon. It had charm, wit and a healthy dose of humor.

Jess Reynolds is in full swing of her maid of honor duties for her best friend Carla's upcoming wedding. It wouldn't be so bad if she didn't have to be seen in a bridesmaid's dress "the Civil War era threw up on", dodge her mother's hints about finding a date in time for the wedding (because God forbid the maid of honor shows up without one), and trying to avoid Carla's attempts at hooking her up with the gorgeous best man. And then there is Riley. Carla's "older idiot brother".

He tended to put bugs in my hair; I tended to put his hand in warm water while he was sleeping whenever I stayed over at Carla's.

Jess and Carla have been best friends for over twenty-two years. She's known Riley just as long but their friendship has always been rooted in playing pranks on one another as kids, and as adults it has morphed into verbal sparring matches. As the wedding nears, Riley surprisingly suggests that Jess move in with him, since the newly weds will be needing their own space. The idea of moving back in with her parents horrifies her so Riley would be the lesser of two evils. The more time they spend together, the more their verbal jabs lose steam. It's not long before she's stealing looks at Riley and noticing things she's never seen before.

I drop my head into my palm. Seriously, why do I find this at all attractive? A week ago, this conversation would have had me wanting to hit Riley's head against the wall. And now, I want to throw Riley against that wall and make out with him until our lips fall off.

When friends and family aren't surprised by her latest epiphany, she's stunned. Was she really the last to know?

I laughed from start to finish. The characters are all quite lovable. Was this cheesy? Yes, but I loved the lightheartedness of it. If you enjoyed 27 Dresses or My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding, I think you'll like this too.

If I could use one word to describe this book, it would be this: adorable! I absolutely enjoyed every moment of this very quick and captivating story. As much as I love gut-wrenching stories that rip my heart out, I also love a great uplifting, funny and upbeat book from time to time. And this book delivered! The main character, Jess, is funny, self effacing, and downright hilarious. She is the Maid of Honor for her best friend, Carla. She has a love-hate relationship with Carla's brother, Riley....who, I must admit is incredibly swoon-worthy, especially when he is driving Jess absolutley bonkers!

Everyone around Jess and Riley seem to know that they have a special chemistry, a special bond that they themselves are in denial about---but, as a reader, it is so very fun to see right through it from the very first chapter. Is the book predictable? In a way, yes. You know who Jess will ultimately fall in love with from the very start of the book. Does it affect the quality of the story? Absolutely NOT. What's fun about this story is watching things unfold, watching Jess and Riley gravitate towards one another in a completely honest and relatable way. It is truly captivating and adorable (yep, there's that word again!)

3.5 stars. Very fast afternoon read. Yes there were a few grammatical errors but nothing as atrocious as some of the reviews make it sound. It was a free book. Light and yes... Maybe a bit predictable but it didn't make the story bad for it. After all, isn't that why we read these books anyways? Who wants a horrible ending? I don't really have sympathy for people who knowingly read chick lit and then complain about it being typical chick lit! It makes me laugh!

This was a free Kindle book that I got because the premise sounded okay and it turned out to be a really good book! I was surprised because free Kindle books tend to be on the cheesy, not-very-well-written side but once in a while, you find a gem and I found a gem in this book.

The characters were so dynamic and real and I just would really like to be BFF's with Jess right now. She was such an amazing, fun character. I loved the dynamic between Jess and Riley and sure, it was an extremely predictable book but when an author keeps me reading to find out HOW everything turns out, that's a keeper for sure. I was a little let down with how everything ended up playing out, but it didn't detract too much from the enjoyment of the novel.

I will say that the Kindle edition of this book is VERY buggy. It's one of the worst I've ever had to deal with. I would constantly try to turn the page and it would bring up a screen that told me to rate the book, which should only show up when I was finished with it. And at least 3-4 times during each chapter, I would turn the page and there would only be a few lines on the screen and then when I turned the page again, thinking it signified the end of the chapter, there would be a page with an entire screen of writing that didn't fit with the page I had just read. So I would have to scroll backwards where the "missing" words would then appear. It was very weird! I'm not sure if I just got a buggy edition or what, but it was a little annoying to deal with that.

This book was a free Kindle purchase, and with that, I normally expect a little less. Many of the free ones just lack the overall feel of a good book (characters, plot, etc), but with this one I was pleasantly surprised! There are some reviews out there that go on and on about the editing job of the book, but I think you can look past it. Reviews that go on and on about the wrong use of ____(insert English major's attempt to sound intelligent) just annoy me. It was probably self published and some of that stuff is just going to get through. The traditional books we see published have been edited by many expensive and experienced editors, so less gets by. You need to cut these authors some slack and stop "showing off" your vast knowledge from the 8 English classes you took in college. It makes you look like a jerk. But the book was great. Jess was a great character who made you root for her the entire time. The humor used throughout the book had me actually laughing out loud. Sometimes I feel that authors rush a romantic interest and I just don't fall for it, but with Jess and Riley you could really get into their story because it's been built up for 20+ years. I think the book could have been a little longer, especially after she finds out she's in love with Riley. Overall, great book and I'll be looking for more books by the author!

I got this book when it was free on Amazon. I really liked the idea of friends that become more..... That is actually my favorite kind of story line. And seriously, it ended up being my favorite book that I read in 2012. And I read about 100+ books this year. Jess is the best friend of the bride and Riley is the brother of the bride. They have that typical relationship where all they ever do is talk smack to each other and give each other so much crap, you wonder how they even stand each other. But, it's all just misconstrued attraction. So, seriously, their banter is so perfect and may even be my favorite part of this book. But, I really loved it. I could go on all day..... But for reals, I just loved it. I have read it 3 times, and I haven't done that in a LONG time.

I LOVED this book and laughed outright throughout. Crystal Bowling writes in a delightfully refreshing upbeat manner about two people who grew up together. These two were so embroiled in repulsion of each other that they missed seeing ... their attraction to each other, while those around them took bets on when realization would set in . If you are looking for a deep read, this is not it. But if you're looking for a light summer read, grab Always the Last to Know and head for the beach!

In the fashion of Kristy ConQueso, this shall be, most likely, a many gif'ed review, because words cannot explain the horrors this book holds. This is my first review, and, incidentally, the first book I read on my Kindle. So, here we go. Let's start off with a little introduction.

Okay, that should be sufficient. Where to start with this book? Well, it was an easy read. Very easy. I finished it in a couple hours. Too, also, it was free. So. There ya go. Those were the two best parts of the whole book.

I shouldn't say it was absolutely horrid. I did at least stumble out the other side when I was finished. Unlike Twilight, which I just turned away from and ran like hell. "What was wrong with it?" you ask. First off, the terrible grammar and punctuation. I tend to proofread while reading books, and I can usually let grammar/punctuation things go when a story is really good. However, this was...well, it was like I was reading something an eighth grader wrote for a Creative Writing class. Do they have those in eighth grade? I know they do in high school. Okay, we'll put it on high school level, but I feel like I'm being uber-generous. I found the main character to be annoying, yet the way she thinks also reminds me a lot of myself. I shudder at the thought. It was on an excessive level, though, in my own defense. Someone smiling at you =/= they're in love with you. I, at the very least, wait for a wink to start planning the wedding. In all honesty, I called the book in the first chapter. Extremely predictable. I like a LITTLE element of surprise.

The one truly unforgivable thing in this whole book is the constant use of "It" (Yes. Capitalized.) when referencing sex. Every. Single. Time. Some authors go overboard with trying to come up with different ways to reference the bumping of uglies. Not Bowling. "It" is all you get. About the 4 millionth time I read it, I was all:

ANYTHING ELSE BUT "IT"!!!!!!!!!

Yes. Thank you, Dean. Anywho...still on the subject of sex. This is literally what I imagined Jess doing:

Final analysis: Easy, quick read if you're bored. Don't expect too much out of it, though.

This book could have been good if someone edited it. The story was predictable but cute. So many details were annoying/unbelievable/naïve. I mean maybe it's because I'm not from Kentucky, but a female living with a male is not a big deal, especially when they are not romantically involved. I'm not sure if the author has found an editor yet, but if not she can send me the finished draft, and I'll edit it for free. I'm not an editor, but I really just wanted to go at this book with a red pen.

First book in the “Always The Bridesmaid”series. Jess Reynolds is preparing getting ready to be Maid of Honour at her best friend's wedding. She keeps getting distracted by events, including the handsome Best Man. Jess might just be the last one to know everything.

First person narrative done badly. Absolutely no interest in seeing the world through the eyes of a really immature 22 year old. Read like me and my friends in junior high.

Dreadful as bridesmaids dresses

Thank God it was free. It was so bad I couldn't even finish it. Not my usual genre but was recommended by a friend I will never listen to again. Just plain silly story and writing.

I got this ebook for free from amazon and I must say, for something free like this, I had fun time reading it.

Oh, who am I kidding? I actually enjoyed reading this wonderful mix of romance and comedy!

Jessica Reynolds is bestfriends with Carla Callahan who was going to get married to Evan Winters. I’d say that Carla is some kind of a bridezilla who wanted everything organized, wanted to be in control of everything. But she is definitely a great dear friend to Jess.

On the other hand, Jess had been tasked to do the duties of a Maid of Honor and make sure that the groom will not get cold feet, before the wedding bells ring.

Sometime before this wedding takes place, Jess met Matt Mancini, a delectable Italian guy who was not only buffed and gorgeous, but could also cook. A man who could literally make the ladies wag their tongue and drool. Could he be the One Jess has been destined to marry?

But what about her BFF’s brother? Jess and Riley Callahan had grown up together, had known each other through the years, and even had the same taste in music. Yet, they always ended up frogging or strangling each other or quarreling over petty things. Then one day, he asked her to live with him. What’s up with that?

Actually, the story of Jess and her date to her bestfriend’s wedding was a bit predictable. The signs that she might be in love were very obvious, but then she was oblivious to the fact that the guy loved her back. It was only a matter of time before she realized that she was the last to know about her feeling, hence the title.

Although I knew that Jess and her lover boy would end up together, I continued reading the story because I didn't want to let go of the giddy feeling I was experiencing while knowing that sooner or later, Jess would finally come to her senses, thanks to her co-worker’s crazed & sex-infested mind.

This is surprisingly a very interesting book. It has funny aspects, as I certainly found myself laughing at several occasions. The writing was not hard on the eyes and I liked that it was based in Jess’ perspective, which was kind of easy to relate with. There’s also the wedding that I looked forward to because I was curious how the bride would react when his groom suddenly got cold feet.

I liked Jessica’s incoherent mumblings and smart ass remarks. The personalities of the other characters were not fully developed but it didn’t matter a lot to me since my focus was on Jess.

Overall, I am glad to have read this funny and quirky story. Recommended for your summer beach read. Expect lots of laughter and cringe-worthy scenes, in the most fashionably giggly fun way. 4 stars for author Crystal Bowling for successfully keeping me entertained until the end. ****

It wasn't utter drivel, but let's see: predictable plot (not in the good 'things better work out the way I want them to' sense, but the bad 'plot tried to be so mysterious in parts but I worked it all out in chapter one' sense), bad grammar, insufferably ignorant main character, and horrible attitudes toward homosexuality all in one. The only good thing about having read it is that it counts as part of my Day Zero Project.

Honestly, I didn't dislike Jess per se, but I didn't like her either. For actually working as a translator, she didn't seem too surprised that she didn't know the Spanish for 'condom'. Having heard the word 'exuberant' used twice in one day, she proclaimed that she'd get her mother a Webster's dictionary for Christmas - didn't she realize she'd find the word 'exuberant' in there? I didn't care for her whole "I don't like this one sexy Italian man - what if I'm a lesbian?" spiel either; she was completely aware of her crush on Owen Wilson.

I got this book free from Amazon, so I can imagine it was self-published and/or lacked an editor. The grammar, oh gosh. "I" as an objective pronoun? "Him" as a subjective one? I thought we learned that early in school. "I done", seriously?

Some of the details and plot points implied that the author didn't take a good enough note of what she'd written before. Two scenes in a row - the first was the bride asking her to attend dinner with her mother's boyfriend, to which Jess agreed, then the next was the bride's brother asking her the same thing, and Jess had to consider things and give in to him when she'd already agreed? The necklace that Riley bought her was a four-leaf clover one, the same one Jess apparently spotted in an earlier scene - that was a horseshoe necklace, not a clover. Good luck charm, yes, but the wrong one. Clearly not a lot of proofreading went into this book.

It was entertaining enough to read all the way through, which only took a few hours anyway, but I'd never read it again, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The predictability aside, there were too many faux pas to enjoy this very much.

Its Wedding fever time in Book #1 of Crystal Bowling's Always the Bridesmaid series as Jess's best friend Carla is getting married and it seems that everyone has a date except for her . Jess however hasn't got time to date since being Maid of Honour for her best friend's wedding seems to be taking up all her time and if that's not bad enough she has to suffer through wearing purple/ lavender as her friend wants a big Southerner themed wedding. Growing up it was always Carla, Jess and Riley - Carla's big brother and now with Carla getting married , the pressure is on Jess to find someone. What will happen though when Riley makes a suggestion that they move in together which will give Carla and Evan - the new husband-to-be more space ? With the move, it seems that pushing Riley and Jess together and making them think it's their ideas , has sparked the romantic chemistry part of their brain and they are starting to realise that maybe they don't hate each other as much as they thought but in reality - they are actually the perfect couple and meant to be ? When it gets to the interesting part which is where the title comes in - it seems that the whole world knows that Riley and Jess should be together, the only ones that are clueless are Riley and Jess themselves. With the help of their friends and family, can the pair "officially" start dating and being boyfriend and girlfriend ? Or will the pair be stubborn and set to prove everything else wrong -that they aren't meant to be ?

Jess Reynolds has been friends with Carla since they were born, so it's no surprise that Jess is the maid of honor at Carla's upcoming wedding. Carla's a bit of an obsessive bride, but Jess weathers a neurotic bride with charm, humor, and a dose of insanity. The bride's brother, Riley, is a different matter all together. From the beginning, when the two of them are together, they are fighting like cats and dogs... and they've been spending plenty of time together lately. But Jess is starting to notice things about Riley, and she's not entirely certain what to do anymore.

It's a cute book, taking place over several days. There's not just the pre-wedding jitters, although there's plenty of that. It's more than horrible brides maid dresses, or a charming best man... There's not a whole lot of depth, but that works for this book. It's fuzzy and sweet, like cotton candy in book form. It's adorable to watch Jess realize what's been right in front of her the entire time, and watching the important people in her life as they react to her new-found knowledge.
