Rosalee Spurlock challenges the dangers of the Colorado mountains with her courage, her rifle and her heart. Then one starless night, Logan Horn comes to her cabin door, handsome and powerful, his eyes blazing with desire from the first moment they meet. Rosalee has finally found a man to walk beside her, not behind her.

Dnf'd. Tried 50 pages, but it's just not for me. While normally I really love Dorothy Garlock's books, this just wasn't working for me. 2.5 ⭐ rounded up.
3.5 stars - This is the second book I read by this Author, the first one being awful, I gave her another try. This one was much better. Amazing strong heroine and female side characters. The hero and male side characters could’ve been a bit harder for my liking. I’m just taking about the ones on the good side ;) There was a good amount of romance and spice. The story was altogether captivating, but the emotional parts didn’t really pull on my heartstrings.
So saccharine sweet, I think I gained weight reading this book. Good plot and courageous people. Saving grace of this story was the recounting the terrible racial hatred and prejudice against the American Indian. IMO I believe it is still prevalent to this day and does not get any attention.
The dialect was over the top, it took me longer than it should have to read this book because none of the character’s spoke without sounding like a hick.
For the opening book of a trilogy, this book was rather bland. Don’t get me wrong, it was enjoyable – just not great. There just didn’t seem to be enough plot/subplots for the 350+ pages of the book.
There are three children and a blind father in the stone house with dirt floors when Logan Horn begged entry during a rainstorm. He had his dying mother in his arms. Although Grant Spurlock was prejudiced against Indians, Rosalee let them in and placed his mother in her bed.
Rosalee is about 19 – 20 years of age, Ben, her brother, is 14 and the younger girl, Odell, is 10. I had a hard time dealing with Grant’s status as a dreamer and a drifter. As a blind man, he should have been aware that he could not protect his children in this harsh wilderness. They were miles away from a town or a neighbor’s help. He’d sunk all of his money in the tract of land they now owned free-and-clear.
Logan was an interesting Indian. His father was a white man who married his beautiful mother and abandoned her when he was ready to leave the area. Using the Indian method of divorce, he did it in such a way that Morning Sun would never be chosen for marriage by an Indian.
Logan’s father and his brother both married Indian women; however, Henry took care of his responsibilities toward his Indian wife. He also took Logan back East and provided education and care. Logan was educated in the Classics and adapted to the white man’s ways. When his uncle died, Logan inherited his sizable estate.
This book takes a hard look at how half-breeds (1/2 Indian, ½ white) were treated. Although Logan had fought (and lead others) in the Civil War, he was still unacceptable to most of the people of the area.
This book also looks at the problems a person of mixed heritage (one of them being Indian) had when he wanted to marry a white woman in the 1860s and later. (In the very early days of English migration, trappers often married Indian women and there were no raised eyebrows.)
There are several subplots but the character development (of the secondary characters) wasn’t really strong enough. There’s lots of action and wonderful descriptions of the landscape, but it just seemed to be a fairly ordinary story. 3.5 stars
Does no one actually notice the fact that Della is raped? Cause she didn't consent to that man... Or are we supposed to overlook it because she is a bitch?

First, the good parts. It's a DG old skool staple: capable hero, capable beyootiful-but-doesn't-know-it heroine, misunderstood/troubled by surrounding society, instant connection between h/h, almost instant forever-love… The parts I enjoyed, I'd grade 3 stars.
But. Trigger warnings ahoy!
There be ignorant white people, racist attitudes and speech.
And then there's really insidious Other-Woman-In-Contrast-To-The-Heroine slut shaming and rape.
If I'd read this even ten years ago, wouldn't have realised what kind of message it gives about Other Women. I'm mightily disappointed, DG. :(
Yep the book still has the magic that it had when I read it at 14 yrs old. Sex Scenes, are sweet, very vanilla compared to today's mainstream romance, but still have some sizzle. Logan and Rosalee use terms for each other like "My Love" and "Darling" alot, kinda too sweet, but keep in mind this book was written in the early 1980's. I do plan on re-reading the next 2 books in the series. I am going to use them as a change up between my really naughty books ;-)
Dorothy Garlock has a way of writing her scenes that put you back in the 1800's with the characters. I couldn't decide between a 4 and a 5 for this one. I gave it a 5 because this book has stayed in my head as a favorite for 26 yrs, and considering how many books I have read, to me that is amazing.
Dorothy Garlock was the first ever romance books I read, I was in 9th grade. They have stayed in my memory as great reads. Two series stick out in my memory, the Wind series and the River series. I found them for my kindle and am going to re-read them and see if they are still as magical as way back then
After the cheesy love scene, my expectations for the rest of the book were rather low. And thats good, because I wasnt disappointed. Perfect book if you are looking for something light to read that doesnt require a lot of thinking, and that had very vanilla (and predictable) love scenes.
This book had me hooked from the start as D. G. Is one of my go to author's. I haven't read this series before, but love it already, any read that brings tears to my eyes gets a five-star rating. Looking forward to book two.
