Erotica Romance ~ Light BDSM ~ Rubenesque/BBW ~ Regency Historical ~ Novel Length 313 Pages / 78,000 Words

Book one in the Regency Risks Series

He is her most dangerous temptation, and now he is demanding her submission. Dare she take the risk?

Emotionally scarred in the horrific accident that took her husband’s life, Lady Cranfield is imprisoned by her lingering terror of horses and carriages. Lady Cranfield longed to be closer to the fascinating Earl of Ruel. She sensed intuitively that he could teach her how to overcome the terrors that held her in bondage.

And now she’s willing to risk almost anything-her reputation, even her virtue-to find out. But what he proposes startles her.

When the shy, studious and socially awkward young widow approached him, Ruel instantly sensed she would be the sweetest, most submissive experience of a lifetime-if only he can gain her total and complete trust. He makes her a non-negotiable offer. His help in return for her submission and obedience.

But Lady Cranfield grew up neglected by her ducal parents, raised by servants and then later ignored by her handsome, charming husband. She’s learnt to protect her heart at all costs and she trusts no one but herself.

How can the jaded Earl of Ruel break through her self-protective defences and show her how to love when he has spent his lifetime avoiding that tender trap?

Reader Advisory: This is a work of historical fiction, it is not meant to be an accurate portrayal of or guide to how people recover from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is also not meant to be an accurate portrayal of modern BDSM or D/s lifestyles.

This is a work of EROTIC Historical Romance and it uses the graphic language and situations of Erotic Romance.

A Measured Risk is published in British English and contains British spelling.

**** A MEASURED RISK is definitely NOT a polite "Austen-like" romance of manners about members of the gentry. The majority of characters in A MEASURED RISK are wealthy, powerful and jaded aristocrats who are unconventional and do things many others would consider scandalous in their time. The heroine was raised in isolation, away from her own class. She's not quite socialized to fit into society. She has a different set of priorities than other ladies of her time.

A MEASURED RISK contains scenes of wild private gentleman’s parties in the country with drinking and sexual licentiousness. If this kind of scenario is offensive to you, you probably would not enjoy A MEASURED RISK.

There are no fully consummated scenes of ménage in A MEASURED RISK. No MFM or MMF. Brief FF touching only.

Nov 2024 reread:

Nothing new I read is holding my attention so back to this. The romance in this… I love the neediness in both of them. Completely buy their obsession with each other 😩😩😩

July 3, 2023 Update:

His wench didn't appreciate how much she needed him. She didn't fully understand the depth of their connection. How easily he could control her and why that was the case. She didn't understand how badly she needed him. She didn't understand that she was his. Perhaps it's time she learned.

I wanted an obsessed hero and Natasha Blackthorne understood the assignment!

"I can make you do anything, Nan. Make you attend a party full of whores, make you kiss another woman. Anything. And you'll be glad to do it for me. That's how it is between us. I can make you spend the winter with me in Scotland and I can make you love me."

Wait but why is this so good. Dirty talk without any dirty words but you feel the delirious sense of reality in the hero.

Anne Bourchier, Lady Cranfield, the Countess of Cranfield, has been in hiding at Whitecross Hall after the death of her husband in a carriage accident en route to London. Although scandalous rumours persist on whether she was in the carriage, no one knows for sure but Anne. And the reader. When we meet Anne, it seems as though her trauma from the carriage accident is that she cannot be around horses, not even her gentle mare, Neroli.

When we meet her, she has fainted at the entrance of a new rider on a dark horse in the stables. This rider is Jonathan Lloyd, the Earl of Ruel. He has made his way for the hunt festivities at Whitecross Hall. Anne is interested in Jon but fumbles at the last second in an assignation that is par for the course for him but is new for Anne.

She backs out time and time again until they finally agree to a measured risk. They will spend one month together in a cottage in the woods. Jon will help her with her fear of horses and of course, carnal pleasures. For Anne is considered awkward, somewhat chubby girl, and an ice-cold wife that repelled her husband...

A Measured Risk is book one of Anne and Jon's love story. Both stories are great. I was close to DNF this after the hero immediately feels for Anne's sad eyes. Like, it is within the first 50 pages in his POV he realizes how attracted he is to helping Anne. I found this a little unbelievable but boy oh boy this historical erotica proved me wrong!

I was also worried with a premise like this that this would be tame. Even Jon thinks to himself that most of the acts are pretty tame but it is the hero's obsession of the heroine, the BDSM, and the dirty talk that really sell this story.

Also, the scene that truly impressed me and told me Blackthorne was having fun:

Not a fan of this cover tho. MMC looks like an army brat and expecting FMC to be more Rubenesque.

June 30, 2023 Update: I will be writing a longer review because I just feel so inspired by the book. Seriously underhyped historical erotica with decent angst and lust. A less wordy Lisa Valquez. Hero instantly recognizes he has a soft soft for heroine but it is dirty and depraved. Bravo to the author for going there with the scene with Maria at Kean’s place. It wasn’t just the physical act but the emotional submission that was impressive.

These tropes (cold/shy heroine, hero “teaches” heroine about the sensual life) are not my go-to but I am obsessed and I am reading more from the author right now.

Hero’s dirty talk isn’t too dirty/explicit but much more domineering and emotionally manipulative (and I liked it lol). Will share some quotes soon.

Natasha Blackthorne book, A Measured Risk.
Well! What can I say about this book. Whew! This book was erotically satisfying!
OMG! I don’t know where to even began, because I have so many emotions and things that I want to say about this book spinning in my head. I feel like they just want to explode out into my review. This book has lust, romance, trust and a lot of sex! Let’s start with the story line.
It was very tragic for Anne to be trapped in that coach with her dead husband for hours with no help. That’s tragic for anyone. She had no family. No one. Well she had her mother, but her mother was a whole other issue Anne was running away from.
Then comes this tall dark muscular, domineering man and he showed Anne all that she could be. He was a savior and her lover. He claimed Anne in every sense of the word. Ladies I tell you if I had a man like Jon- I would never leave my bed. Morning, noon and night.
I would lay there and tell him that I’m ready. Do what you will. Whew! This man was to much. This book had me on an emotional roller coaster.
Anne just keeps pushing Jon away, but Jon is determined to have her. He believes that he pulls the strings in their romance affair, when it’s Anne who holds all the cards. I give this book THREE SNAPS AND THREE JUICY TWIST. Yes my fellow readers, I recommend reading this book. If you’re looking for some fun to read at night.
Until next time my fellow readers... read on! I need to go take a cold shower now. I received this book as a gifted copy to give my honest review.

Bought it in 2014, shame I didn't read it earlier - it's very good, I was enthralled. It's a historical setting, has a strong plot and interesting characters. Towards the end I found the h a little annoying, she has an odd issue and loses her mind to the H. He betrayed her trust, but regained it when he offered her his heart. One of the best historical dominance / submission books, with interesting psychological elements. Loved it, and bought book 2 which continues their story.

I love my historicals. I love my BDSM erotica reads. And damn putting the two together? *girly swoon* I really enjoyed A Measured Risk. It was fresh, steamy, emotional and just a heart touching romance between two very unique characters.

The gist is that after being traumatized and left a widow in a carriage accident Anne has suffered from severe PTSD ad hasn't bee able to leave her home. She's fascinated by Ruel who is visiting, seems fearless and embraces life and can't resist his offer to help her take control of her life back--by spending a month with him as his submissive.

Anne was a heroine that I think, on the surface, many people may write off for being weak and grating--lord knows that's how most of the people in her life treat her-- but I thought she was a wonderful heroine and rather complex. She's socially awkward and can seem cold because of it, is fixated on philosophy and understanding everything, and has been left emotionally broken. I really felt for her and all of her struggles and loved watching her with Ruel. There were some crazy emotional scenes that had me chocking up as she worked through her fears.

Now, Ruel. Yum. He was totally rocking the dom mode. He likes being in control, is jaded about marriages for love and embraces the hell out of his debauched life but Anne has set his world on a spin and really tests everything he's held firm to for so long. I liked seeing him lose control of himself and getting all flustered over her. He's far from perfect and, well, a couple times he really needed a smack down but he had so many qualities that made me love his character. I really liked that he doesn't mind hard work--mucking stalls, chopping wood, etc. And that he defends and cares for Anne even when he's having 'moments' of assery.

The BDSM aspects were great. They aren't too heavy--some light bondage, spankings, submission. There are some holy hell make you fan yourself moments and some sweet ones too which totally worked for me.

All in all, an excellent historical erotica that'll spice up an evening in. They were really just a great pairing and I enjoyed their time together in and out of the bedroom.

TW : A strong OW presence.

Not really liking appearances of a handful of Jon’s former mistresses trying to stir up a drama. All these scheming bitches trying to put down Anna by remarking on her less-than-milky white complexion and curvaceous body due to her Spanish heritage on her mother’s side.

Anna even came in on Jon trying to seduce Cherry, one of his past paramours as a bid to gauge a reaction out of her after she rejected his advances. There was even a scene where Jon was having a discussion with his close friend, Kean about Anna. Kean came clean about his feelings about Anna which sent him reeling with jealousy. Kean even mentioned to Jon about a woman, Jane, Jon used to take a delight in. She’s now Kean’s mistress. Kean and Jon had always shared their women in the past. Jon got a hard on just remembering about Jane’s face and lush body which I counted as emotionally cheating🙄 This happened about 70% into the story, way past the part where Jon and Anna had already become lovers.

There was also another scene where his paramour named Maria (who he’s supposed to marry prior to meeting Anna) came over to his bedroom and pouting why he had not visited her in over 4 weeks. It was during the time when Jon had a huge argument with Anna prior to Maria’s visit so they had not slept with one another at the time. Maria attempted to seduce Jon in which he had a massive hard on also despite only wanting Anna. Maria even proposed to have a threesome with him and Anna together which had Jon reacting with so much lust. Bedding his intended wife and mistress together?! Surely fidelity wasn’t a high priority among noblemen but damn this rake can’t keep his prick under control! I really thought the hero would maintain a semblance of discipline and honour at least.

While I don’t mind a possesive and jealous hero, Jon did come across as a complete jerk sometimes especially when Anna was always timid and submissive on his whims. He detested Anna entertaining his male admirers but he himself occasionally danced and chatted merrily with his past paramours while Anna looked on.

A really bad read for me. Although i liked the writing style it wasn't enough for me to overlook the totaly despicable characters. Especially the "hero" made me so mad i had to put down and pick up the book several times before finishing it. He was egoistical, unreasonable, loathsome and absolutely disgusting. I hated him right from the start. As for the "heroine" she was a weakling trying to overcome her fears bla bla bla. To me she was just pathetic. Maybe i'm so disapointed by this book cause i expected it to be a great read, which it wasn't. But again i like the writing style of this author, still the story and characters made me dislike this book so much.

The Following review is my opinion and not a paid review.

This book was simply amazing. It has everything you could possibly want.
After reading this I automatically think "Fifty Shades of What"?
If you are a Fifty Shades of Gray fan than you will totally love and adore this book for sure.

First off, I have to say how well the title of this book fits! A Measured Risk

Natasha Blackthorne's book's just get better and better. This one is by far the best. Its really a work of art and a total masterpiece for this genre.

This book was so enticing and inviting. There has always been marriages and relationships done because of obligation or convenience and because of that the couples sex life is non existent. Natasha writes real characters in real life situations that you can relate to on my different levels.

Ann, an educated, curvy , full woman, cold on the outside but inside she has passion burning and dying to get out. She is emotionally scarred. She sees Jon as brave and courageous. She wants to ask for his help with her fear of horses and carriages but she gets more than she bargained for. He soon shows her what she has inside herself.

Jon is a sexy, confident, dominate, trustful and honorable man. He is sure of himself and knows what he wants and goes for it. When the luscious Ann gives him a come get me look. He cant help but follow her.

The ending was beautiful. I am in awe of this book. This book had everything I have ever wanted when reading this genre.

It took me a few days to read this book because I didn’t want it to end. Not only did this book affect my heart and mind but it also affected my body and soul.

Its really going to be hard for me to find a book in this genre to top this one. Its truly amazing.

Sensual, erotic, romantic, steamy, sexy, sweet, arouse, masterful and loving are all the words that come to mind when I think of this book.

This book is a keeper and a must read. This book will stay with me for a long time to come. Its unforgettable.

I love erotic historical romances, and Natasha's books meet my needs every time. Especially her latest book A Measured Risk. This is by far my favorite book in her collection, even though Grey's Lady comes in a close second. Anne was on a mission. Ever since the horrid accident that had taken her husband's life, she had lived in an unrelenting grasp of fear. But what Anne never realized was that she had been stuffed into a box long before her husband's death. For lurking inside this studious lady's cold facade was a passionate woman screaming to get out. And it took one look at The Earl of Ruel to know he was the man that would help free her, she just didn't realize it meant freeing all of her. Even the parts of her that she hid from herself.

Johnathan was used to getting exactly what he wanted, and he knew from experience that the society ladies rarely offered it. There maybe a hint of something more behind there cool exterior glances, but it rarely panned out into anything remotely resembling long-term or interesting. But Anne had his attention long before he came to another one of these dull parties. She had an air about her that was intriguing and Jon couldn't help being reeled in. Especially when he realized she was more than willing to play his game.

Anne came to Jon at first for help. But something sparked between the two of them that left Anne breathless and Jon grasping for control. Neither were prepared for where their games would lead them, and these games in question were unbelievably hot!!! You'll need one of those hand-fans yourself for a large part of this book! If you enjoy light BDSM, tied in with a sensuous romance then this is the book for you!!! Who knew a little rope and spanking could be soooo delicious? Hat's off to Natasha!! I can't wait for more like this!!!

4.5 stars. Wow, wow, wow. The hottest book I've read in a while. And it's a historical! The hero is smoldering, the less-than-stick-thin heroine is relateable (if a bit too damn stubborn for her own good at the end), and the story was unusual for a book where D/s is central to the plot. The heroine has a major problem (PTSD) and the hero helps her deal with it through careful conditioning... interspersed with lots of steamy sex. Sure, it's totally outlandish, but who cares? This was a fun read that had me fanning myself and flipping the pages to see what would happen next.

My only complaint is that the small press that published this book could have done a better job on the editing. At one point, the heroine, Lady Cranfield, is referred to as Lady Cranford, and the word "explicative" is used instead of "expletive." There are more typos and missing words than I like to see in a book that's supposed to have been professionally edited. (I *really* hate getting knocked out of the story by errors that force me to stop and re-read.) Thus only 4.5 instead of 5 stars. However, don't let this keep you away from the book. I'm probably more sensitive to this issue than most.

Bottom line: Highly recommended. This was definitely hotter than Fifty Shades. MUCH hotter. I will be picking up more books by Natasha Blackthorne.

Full disclosure: I won this book in a contest.

3 1/2 stars (ish) This is an erotic romance with elements of BDSM so something I don't read a great deal. The story of Anne, who is recovering from the trauma of a coach accident in which her husband was killed, and Jon who is a jaded hero living a life of decadence at first glance seems unlikely.

The instant attraction between the two, despite Anne's debility is a forerunner of what is to come. Anne does not realise that her feeling for the Earl of Ruel is sexual because she is trying to rationalize her world through purely intellectual means. She has quite a lot of back-story beyond the coach accident which is the perceived reason for her coldness and withdrawal. She also has a strong reason for overcoming her PTSD as she needs to go on a coach journey in a very few months.

Jon is a former soldier, inheriting an Earldom he didn't want. His life as we see it is one of a round of debauchery with his friends and the women who flock around him. This includes Maria, a woman of jaded appetites with an eye to being his bride. In fact Jon has agreed to a marriage of convenience with her, having given up on love.

So right from the start, any liaison between Jon and Anne is limited for he intends to marry Maria next summer and this is the autumn. Of course things seldom work out how we expect.

The smexy in this story is way above steamy at times but well done. I did find some of the explicit language discomforting and this spoiled that aspect of the book for me to some extent. One of the reasons I don't read a lot of erotica. I like the steamy smex but the language is a bit much for my prudish intellect. The BDSM wasn't over the top and the orgy mentioned by another reviewer stopped short of killing my taste for the hero. (My fidelity issues)

The romance between Anne and Jon was the best part of the book. They are both flawed and did stupid things but I liked the way the trust grew between them and along with the trust, an unexpected feeling. The way Jon helped Anne with her PTSD issues was logical and with his background as a soldier also believable.

Overall I loved the romance, enjoyed the smexy but found the language confronting.

Disclaimer: I purchased this book some time ago but received an updated copy from the Author. I did notice a couple of editing issues but nothing like what has been mentioned by other reviewers.

This book is an erotic, steamy, historical romance. It contains graphic bondage, dominance, and submission.

This story revolves around two enjoyable characters, Anne and Jon. The prologue describes a terrible carriage wreck during which one of the horses tragically kills her husband. After that, she suffers from PTSD. The love she had for horses turns into terror. She already has low self esteem, and comes across as cold and aloof when around others. Jon sees that she has the potential for more. He feels a need to hold others at arms length. He is a player, and has a reputation as a love them and leave them sort of man. He doesn’t want to become responsible for any sort of attachment to another, but eventually decides that he can use dominance to break down her walls and teach her to trust. Can he make this work even when his own heart is locked away?

I really like this book. The characters feel real, and the plot is enjoyable. Author Natasha Blackthorne does a great job of world-building and character development. 4 stars

Natasha Blackthonre was my introduction to the Historical genre and I have to say I could not imagine a better intro. She had me with Grey's Lady and has now taken me on a new adventure and exploration with A Measured Risk.

An emotional tale of a woman trying to live without fear after the loss of her husband from a tragic accident. And a man (who has all but given up on finding love) that helps her to conquer her fears and then some. They each complete the other and introduce new things that each has not before experienced. Jon introduces Anna to the D/s lifestyle and Anne shows Jon (unintentionally) that true love does truly exist.

I found that this historical take on the D/s lifestyle (through Natasha's telling) was very entertaining and hard to put down. I recommend to anyone and everyone that enjoys historical, BDSM or just an all around good read!

Historical romance that requires a fan!

This was my first novel by Natasha Blackthorne and I was impressed with how well she blended an intriguing, character-driven story with some very hot, sexual scenes!

I was rooting for these flawed individuals and wanted a HEA for them. There were some very suspenseful moments throughout.

No spoilers. You'll have to read the book for yourself to see what I mean by hot, suspenseful, and flawed.

The heroine in this story tends to have rambling internal dialogues that often halted the progress of action in the story. Add in the fact that she repeats herself many times over, and it reached the point where I was just annoyed with her.

I doubt I will continue with the second book in this series, because I'm done with all their unnecessary drama and the borderline unhealthy nature of their relationship.

A little extreme in terms is public displays of "activity", or the willingness thereof, but can't hold that against the story just cuz it's not my cup of tea! some moments i felt the H crossed the line that he later did not repent for enough, that's why the 4 stars....with that being said totally running to the next book in series!

A Measured Risk is the first explicitly erotic book in the Regency Risks series.
Prologue set in Suffolk, England, 1818, with the story following a year later in 1819. This story is heavy on the dominance/submissive relationship.

A Measured Risk: 4 stars: Jonathan & Anne

Anne Bourchier, the Countess of Cranfield, is widowed in a traumatic carriage accident. Suffering from severe stress, Anne is grappling with understanding from purely an intellectual perspective.

Jonathan Lloyd, the Earl of Ruel, inherited an earldom he didn’t want. A former soldier, Jonathan is determined, controlling, and passionate.

Jonathan and Anne’s relationship is a complex journey. It’s sensual, steamy, romantic, and masterful with some very big emotional issues.

I recommend this book.

"You're trying to get me to capitulate to your will, to marry you. But I'm just a toy to you."

Geblek bat nih buku. Gue baca gara2 liat di thrope IG soal HR tapi BDSM. penasaran mau baca tapi malah ... yeap, it"s disgusting as it ever be.

Lu makan deh tuh cinta. Pain pleasure tuh bukan cinta, tapi napsu.

Yaiks.

Natasha is an excellent writer whose books go on and on and on. I finish the books because the plots are so good, but it takes awhile to get there. Her attention to detail is unmatched.

By the end of the book I was tired of Jon. He was too dominant, and the wench role play was too intense for me. This type of romance where the make is so alpha may not be my cup of tea. Please take that into consideration as you read my review.

Anne, Lady Cranfield, has lived a cold, lonely existence. Her husband died in her arms in a carriage accident and instills another fear of riding in a carriage and horses. Wanting to overcome her fears, she approaches Johnathan Lloyd, Earl of Ruel. His approach is unexpected and will test not only her limits, but his. Erotica and mild BDSM.

Better written and paced than most pure erotica, but the FMC trod the border between shy and comatose a little too often. Would have been nice to see her have some moments of backbone
