Me, Myself and I

Rate this book
Book 1 of the Dark Reflections Series

Tristan is an actor and he plays a supervillain in the movies. At least he thought he did, but then he has an accident and he wakes up surrounded by the world of the films. Now he has to figure out if he's hallucinating, if somehow the movies are real and he's been transplanted to another world or if he is actually Devon, a supervillain having a psychotic break. Whatever the it's frighteningly crazy.

"Me, Myself and I" is a sci-fi/fantasy novelette (~15.5Kwds), with a heavy side of male/male romance.

This is the first story in the Dark Reflections Series. Book 2 will be out in the near future.

I liked this, but as the first in a series it's only a snippet, and there is zero resolution. I'm not even sure I know where the plot is headed, because the guys I want to be together seem unlikely. This was a freebie, but without knowing the author's work (or, at this point, how much the installments will be) I'm not sure I would invest in the series. It was pretty well written, and an interesting premise.

Also, the sex is gay erotica, not m/m, as there is no romance: it's sex for the sake of mind blowing, two-hour, multi-orgsmic, marathon sex

EDIT: Also, wondering if this started at Watchmen fanfic. Devon seems to be Doctor Manhattan.

((Freebie on Amazon/Kindle))

For a freebie this was very good.

Even when the main guy actually got banged… by himself…

Yes.. That’s what I said..

This is a short story about a guy, Tristan, who’s an actor. At the wrap party for his latest movie, he gets a knock in the head, passes out and wakes up in the world of the movie he just wrapped..

Where he, of course, meets his evil self..

And.. you know.. gets jiggy with it..

It may sound weird, but it wasn’t at all.

I’m surprised myself, but I really liked it, and for some reason I actually want the evil dude to come back for him..self?… because he misses himself and they are clearly meant to be..

Oh wow.. I should be a sci-fi m/m writer, huh? No?

Sex with yourself or not, I really liked it and its defo a 4 star rating on my freebie scale..

Very close to being my first 5 star freebie actually..

Re-read. One of my favourites because Tristan is with the villain and not the heroes. I also liked the narcissistic dynamic. Short with a little sex. After reading the second one, his captivity makes me cringe.

November 2018

Me, Myself & I is everything I’d want in an Alice in Wonderland type of story. Superheroes, Supervillain and smut. Could’ve been a bit longer and I’ve always thought 1 & 2 could’ve just been one book. I like how Tristan is calm, collected and takes everything in his stride. Favourite character would be joint Tristan and Devon. I like the whole look alike part. It’s a good origin story for the second book.

What an awesome premise! Once I discovered the novelette was free, I immediately downloaded and read it. Around 15,500 words, Me, Myself and I was almost everything I hoped for.

Told in 1st PoV from Tristan's side, the novelette began with Tristan attending a party celebrating the completion of his third superhero movie when suddenly a champagne cork hits him in the head, knocking him out. Tristan quickly wakes up and finds himself strapped down and in the world of his superhero movie. Is he Tristan the actor having a dream or is he Devon the supervillain waking up from a breakdown?
Whatever the answer: it's frighteningly crazy.
And awesome!

The only thing I didn't like about the short story was the single sex scene near the ending because its kink didn't appeal to me.

In spite of its length, I liked the ending. I didn't mind how the story left its ending open for interpretation to whether Tristan's experience was real or a dream. In my mind, there is no doubt to what the answer was.

I rate Me, Myself and I 3-stars for I liked it. I greatly look forward to the sequel.

Short, intriguing, mind-bending little story. Delicious characters, original plot, only one sex scene but man...it was goose-bump inducing in more ways than one. It has all the markings to become a must-read series. Just like the "Soul Reader" series. Got me hooked the same way, too: give away the first one for free and watch the readers wait with bated breath for the sequel, perfectly willing to pay for the next hit.

Cannot wait for the next one and will gladly pay for it. Thank you, Ms. Duncan-Drake!

That was an interesting experience. I loved the story it was different and fun to read. Devin and Tristan are WOW! sadly there just wasn't enough of them. This story can go so many places, I can’t wait for the next one.

If you’re not a Scifi fan this is probably not the book for you but if you are I recommend it!

I immediately bought the sequel, so I definitely liked it. In fact, it was the most gleefully and unapologetically fun thing that I've read all day.

This story takes the trope of “actor in your fave show/movie gets sent to the fictional world,” and then has delightful fun with it.

Spoiler: having sex with a variation of oneself ALWAYS intrigues me as a concept.

(Semi-related note: Goodreads and Amazon are trying to sync these days! If you saw me rate this previously as 4*, that was my Amazon.com rating. On GR, I stick to their rating scheme. So, I didn't downgrade it, just... it's hard for a short story to get better than "I liked it!" from me.)

A fun read

I liked the novelty. Actor knocked out by stray corkscrew dreams he’s in the reality of the film he’s making. There were plot twists there and some adult themes.

One thing I liked is that we don’t really know what is or isn’t true. If someone showed up looking like you would your family buy into it? Would they ignore the discrepancies and writer it off as a split personality? I don’t know and neither did the people in the dream world.

This ended with a hint of more to come. Not required reading so much as the idea that there’s more to know is coming and I’d like to know more.

Short but cute with an interesting plot. Would've loved a slower, more romantic (rather than plain erotic) read but it was definitely enjoyable.

Great

This had no right to be as good as it was. Despite its shortness, the plot was super fun and the characters are really likeable.

I had this book sitting in my to-read pile for a few years, and then on a whim opened it one day and read it finally. I was hooked by the first page, and was surprised and delighted at the premise and its execution.

The good:

- There's quite a bit of character nuance packed into such a short book, which takes some skill.
- The premise, while not terribly original, is done well, and I liked the characters presented.
- There were at least a handful of spots wherein I laughed out loud for a good reason.
- I happened to read this when I was in the perfect mood for a fun, light romp of fluff that this was.
- It reads like a fanfic (a good fanfic) with the serial numbers filed off well enough that there's only similarities to certain superheroes and villains, rather than near-copies. I rank this as a positive because I enjoy good fanfic, and superheroes, no matter how cheesy. Good cheese makes a big difference. :P

The not so great:

- Too short! While there was some character development, there was a lot of unrealized potential in how bare-bones everything was, and how rushed it felt as a result.
- Due to its length, there was more handwaving than I might otherwise tolerate for why things worked a certain way, and why such-and-such was a thing believed without question. I'd have enjoyed it a lot more if the author took more time to develop everything more.

My personal pet peeves:

- Frankly, the sequel should not have been sold separately. It's frustrating when authors cut what's already a short novel into two or more parts and charge for each. It offends me on principle, despite understanding that everyone needs to pay bills, authors included. There are other ways to make money writing that are less likely to backfire or irk potential readers.
- The only reason I got this was because it was free at the time and I was bored. I generally loathe these serial formats so much that I never bother to read the blurb, let alone get a freebie part, especially if the other parts are $5+ for each, which is absurd.

Me, Myself and I (Dark Reflections Series Bk 1) by Natasha Duncan-Drake

This a delightful little story about a man, a movie and possible other realities. I like how fast paced it was, a quick read with delightful characters, hot m/m sex and a set up for the next book. What more could a reader want?

Tristan Havering is an actor that just wrapped up the filming of a three part movie. The first movie was good, the sequel did better and they are hoping for even better box office sales on this one. At the party that night someone pop a champagne cork right into Tristan’s forehead, he fell, hitting the back of his head on the wall.

When he woke up he found that he was inside the movie he had been filming. He wasn’t a character though, he was himself. It was set just before the beginning of the last movie, and while he woke up in the head quarters of Team Alpha, he was kidnapped by the character he played, a man with out of control powers that wants to wipe out Team Alpha because they didn’t stand beside him when his new powers spun out of his control.

Devon tells Tristan that he had been conducting an experiment, and part of his accident was what brought him into this dimension. The heat built, the character he played, that was here in the stronghold, was seriously not Tristan, to his mind, much more dangerous. It had been so long since Tristan had been with a man, PR said he needed girl friends, so would he take this opportunity to fulfill a need and an attraction? Would he make it back to his dimension? Or would Devon decide to keep him? Or kill him?

Wonderful, just what I have come to except from Tasha D-Drake, I love her work and will looking for more in this series. 5 stars for character development and heat. Thank you, Ms. D-Drake.

Male-male superpower erotica

Looking for some superpower romance I ran into this weird little tale. First of two stories, with a typical ebook marketing where the first one is free and if you are interested you can pay for the second. Unlike many of the erotica version of short ebooks, this book of 58 pages is nearly entirely (81%) related to the story - and there is a story! Plus the second tale of the series is not short - 155 pages - over 50K words - worthwhile paying a bit of change for. Overall the two books are more of a short-story prequel (free) and novel (pay the author so she can eat) combination.

Loved the premise of crossing dimensions to where the Main Character (MC) is mistaken for the person he plays in a movie. Because the movie character is insane, our MC has to question himself if he is actually this other person. Every person in the story comes off believably real - the MC, the "love" interest, the interrogator, etc.

The weird part, and some of the most interesting points of the story, occurs when the MC meets the movie version of himself. The character he studied to play the movie role, so he has insights and understanding which no one else has for this insane villain.

Last part of the tale - what would you do when you meet your evil twin self? Or, better yet, what would you do if you needed to beg an insane villain for a ride home?

In the extras after the main tale, you get the teaser for the next book and it looks even better than this prequel.

Note for an "erotica" this book has only one explicit M-M sex scene towards the end of the story.

I did not expect much from this M/M short story: the bland blurb on the book description and the elementary cover art were not particularly promising.

I am happy to say I was wrong.
Conveyed by a writing which is quick and much to the point, the plot may not be awfully original but it is tight, consistent and entertaining. Rhythm is very fast and the lead is fully rounded. Side characters are far less so but it is probably due to the story being very short. Devon seems an interesting antagonist, though.
Dialogues are sparkling, sometimes a little too much for the perilous situation Tristan finds himself in, but they elicit more than one smile.

There is one, maybe a little unexpected, explicit sex scene towards the end. It is well done even if more could have been done to build up the tension leading to it. I would have apreciated for the two lovers to switch roles in bed, but this is a personal taste, of course.

The story is self contained but there are many openings for a sequel.
Editing is good with just two typos: affect instead of effect and a "you're" instead of a "your" towards the end.

Weirdness... That is all I have to say about this one. Quick read, slightly strange, superheroes and alternate universes!

Not bad, but not great either. This wasn't poorly written, the story was just a touch too weird for me. I suppose we have to try these things.

The sexy stuff was kinda hot though, even if it was VERY odd!

I downloaded this freebie from Amazon. To be honest, if it wasn't a freeb I wouldn't have bought it. The story and introduction to the characters on the "other side" was at times a little long winded. The sex scene was over before it even began. Pretty disappointing really. Sorry, Natasha. Not sure if there's a follow up, but maybe there should be to tidy up all the loose ends.

Bought this book on a whim in a fit of boredom. Was instantly pulled into the parallel worlds and thoroughly amused! The hero/villain angle was very interesting and I found the "romance" between Tristan and Devon intriguing on a deeply psychological level. I can't wait to see what comes next!

I read this book earlier this summer but never got around to writing a review so here it is.
I liked this book a lot, yet this is one that has me begging to have it expanded.
The characters are fresh. The plot original. The single sex scene extremely erotic. The story leaves one wanting more.

I almost abandoned this early on when I wasn't sure what I was reading—science fiction? fanfic based on some world I didn't know? It feels like this story needed a longer form to do it justice, as there's a lot that could be fleshed out that might have made this flow better.

A clever little story about an actor who ends up falling for his film character in an alternate universe, or did he?
