Aileen Donovan is an oceanographer with magical control over the element of water. While her normal focus is on research and fighting poachers, she’s about to go up against the stuff of legends—and that’s saying something for a supernatural. A transport ship is missing and everyone’s eager to get their hands on the cargo. No one knows what exactly it is, but when fragments resembling coral begin to drive local residents insane, Aileen suspects a preternatural source. Whatever is at the bottom of the ocean, a power-hungry alchemist wants it, and releases a sea dragon to eat the competition—literally. Aileen sees this as an opportunity to win the professional recognition she desires, but keeping secrets is complicated when she’s working with local Coast Guard officer Colin Benson. Her sense of love and duty will be put to the test, and when the tide washes out, it might have been better if that lost ship had stayed lost.

Angela Wallace has been penning adventures ever since she was sucked through a magical portal as a child. What she saw and whom she met gave birth to exciting and complex fantasy worlds where defying the laws of physics was a bonus. She has since come back down to earth, only to discover this mortal realm has magic of its own. Now she is quite at home in the world of urban fantasy, though believes that love, faith, and hope are of a stronger magic than fire wielding and sorcery. She loves gun-toting good boys, and could have been a cop in another life except real blood makes her queasy. She’ll have to stick to solving supernatural mysteries. Language is her pleasure, whether it’s weaving words on a page or lassoing linguistics into translations as a sign language interpreter. Angela is currently working on the next book in her Elemental Magic series.

Just got done reading “Elemental Magic” by Angela Wallace, which she sent to me as an ebook. If you are a fan of element bending like in “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” you’ll find a lot to like here, as I did.

The protagonist Aileen has supernatural abilities – she is able to manipulate water in order to help sea creatures and others. There are other “elementals” in the world, able to work with fire, air, and earth. As members of the Stewardship, these elementals are tasked with protecting the earth and its creatures from human follies such as poaching and polluting. A much more dangerous mystery ensues, however, when a cargo ship is reported missing and the elementals try to determine what happened and why. They soon realize that a powerful alchemist has started gathering up elemental weapons and tools, with the goal of becoming all powerful; in order to defeat him, it will take humans and elementals working together to defeat a common enemy.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and getting to know the characters. The prose is a little clunky sometimes, and a little more back story near the beginning of the book (regarding what elementals are) would have been nice. Otherwise, a solid story that flows well and keeps the reader engaged to the last page. Kudos to Ms. Wallace on her self-published book, and after reading the teaser for the sequel, I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series to see how the characters evolve.

Elemental Magic is a beautiful blend of mystery, suspense and the supernatural. From the first chapter the story and characters grabbed me and held on to last page. I love the added mythology of the sea, as much as I enjoy reading about vampires and werewolves it's a refreshing change, can't wait for the next book.

I was sent an e-book copy of Elemental Magic by Angela Wallace and I was pretty excited for similar reasons to why I was excited to read Seanan McGuires Discount Armageddon - both authors are taking a slightly different angle to the traditional UF read - McGuire threw in cryptozoology and Wallace threw in elemental manipulation. Most of the other books I've read that use elementals as a theme are more traditional sci-fi/fantasy/historical, so it was interesting to see it from a more 'modern' angle.

I thought the lead character was interesting - Aileen is an insecure, slightly dense romantic, workaholic who was trying to live up to pretty high family responsibilities. Her male counterpart is a Coast Guard (look, it's cliched to be like 'oooo guy in a uniform' but... lets not kid ourselves. oooo. Guy in a uniform).

I would almost agree with Niall Teasdale that Elemental Magic is more of a paranormal romance then straight up Urban Fantasy, but I'm not quite sure, because the line between the two is really more of a scattering of sand then any sort of real line. I didn't love this book, but I liked it, and am interested in where Wallace is going with the series.

One thing I just noticed (yeah, I'm super perceptive.) (I mean, I always knew this. I'm a librarian, we know everything) is that Angela Wallace self-published this book. Major high-five to her for that. One of the things I will say is that this book didn't have the heavily-edited feel that a lot other books do. There are pros and cons to that, but what ends up coming through is Wallace's voice. I would love to see what Wallace can do with the backing of a publisher behind her, because she's doing pretty damn good without one! It's well worth a read, and I'm glad it's part of a series.

First off, ignore the cheesy cover art. My biggest concern with the cover is that it portrays a teen, whereas Aileen Donovan is actually 26. I think it takes away from the intelligence of the novel and makes it look like another addition to the lame teen genre, when honestly, it’s not.

The novel is a little short, especially for the first in a series. That’s my way of saying; I wish the novel had more of back story about the four types of elementals- water, fire, air, earth. Also, about their philosophy and origin- it did touch upon some mythology, but I wanted more! The book is focused heavily on detective work, which is probably why I didn’t give this novel a higher score. If the novel included both a mix of detective work and mythology, I would’ve been happier.

However, don’t let that throw you off. Angela Wallace writes with talent, actually uses words where I had to use my ereader’s dictionary, and you can tell she’s passionate about her work. Keep in mind; this is a self published novel.

Elemental Magic was my first elemental novel. This book has the right formula of being smart without being too difficult to understand –perfect for readers of diverse ages- had me entertained, and I cared for the well being of the characters (well, most of them, some characters were a tad annoying or maybe unrealistic). Overall, I just needed more, but I hardly think that’s a bad thing.

Aileen Donovan is special. She is what is known as an Elemental, one of a chosen group of people called Stewards. They are chosen by God to protect the Earth and all it's flora and fauna. The element that she controls and protects is water and all it's inhabitants.Except that water's creatures don't exactly like her much.
When the sea starts acting up, ships start sinking and the bodies start piling up.Aileen and her family, along with a friendly(and sexy)Coast Guard officer start putting together the pieces of the puzzle to bring peace back to the sea and the residents' of the coastal town they live in.
This type of story is usually very appealing to me. But I had a hard time staying interested.I liked the story line, the characters and the romantic subplot. But I found Aileen to be a bit of a whiner with more than a little sense of entitlement.Overall it was a nice story, and it is the first in a series.I just don't think I will be reading the rest of them.

I receives this book in ebook format from the author. This book caught me from the very first page. Aileen is a Water Elemental who doesn't get along with the animals in her element. She is asked to help with locating a lost transport ship from the coast guard. This leads to a mystery of what the ship was carrying and what happened to it. I enjoyed the love story between Aileen and Colin to me it was more of a subplot that happened while the main plot of the book was unfolding. I really enjoyed this aspect! Aileen discovers more things about herself with this mystery. She learns more about who she really is and more about her water element. The story was a light read and well written. I fell in love with the characters and laughed, cried, and felt right along with them. This was a really good book I can't wait to read more about Aileen!

I received this as an ebook from the author herself. Elemental magic had me from page 1! I love paranormal and anything that involves the ocean, so I was intrigued by the write up on Goodreads.com. Aileen is an oceanographer who works at a research facility with family and other elemental users. Their element is water and they know how to use it! Elemental Magic has mystery, intrigue and even a love story all exquisitely rolled into one. The author has a magical way with words and I could envision every part of the book in my head while I was reading. Usually I can predict how a book will end, but with this book that was not the case. Plot twists and surprises throughout the book that kept me yearning for more. I don't want to spoil the book, you will have to read it and see for yourself. I can't wait to read the next Elemental Magic in the series.

I love, love, love all things paranormal. Mainly because I believe there is way more to this universe and its energies than most people give recognition to. That being said, Ms. Wallace could have gone overboard with the manipulation of elements and the character's special powers, but she didn't. By letting my imagination run along side of the novel, I could see this happening in our world - if we were fortunate enough to see it, that is. The events that take place and the "elemental powers" that worked their way through the pages and story flowed naturally. The characters were likeable, honorable, very real, and the premise compelling. A thoroughly enjoyable read!

Not usually a reader of paranormal romance/urban fantasy fiction, I picked this one up because I'm a huge fan of Angela's blog, and knew that if her writing there was anything to go by, then this would be well worth the read. I wasn't disappointed.

With likeable characters, a kick ass story line, and well-written prose, it was hard to put down. The book had me in suspense from the get-go and I now wait in anticipation of the rest of the books in the series.

This is the first book I got using the free giveaway part of this website, and to be honest I was expecting some rinky-dink trial book. I was pleasantly surprised when I finished this book and I was aching for more! This book was excellent! I love mythology so all the sea creatures were very interesting to me. It's a book in a category all of its own and I'm excited to obtain the next book. Do you offer a giveaway for the next book in this series? Or is there a way I can buy it?

This review was originally posted on Melissa's Midnight Musings on August 4 2012

This is another book I've had for a while that I really wish I had gotten to sooner.

The first thing that caught my attention is the fact that there are two Charmed references within the first two pages. If you're a long time reader here at Melissa's Midnight Musings, you know that I LOVE Charmed. It's my all time favorite show. So that set the tone for me, and got me thinking, "this is going to be an awesome book."

I was not disappointed.

For readers who like supernatural creatures and elements, this story has a little bit of everything. There are elementals, sea dragons, nereids, vampire mutts, spirits/ghosts, and alchemists.

I have to admit, I haven't read many stories with elementals before, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I think that the supernatural elements were explained really clearly, and very descriptively, so it was easy to get caught up in that aspect of the story. There are a lot of different types of supernatural beings in the story, and sometimes that can make things confusing, but in this case it was helpful in terms of the world building and helping you become more invested in the story.

There was one part about the exposition of the supernatural elements that I didn't like, which was the way the author used quotes around certain phrases like "special power." I think she may have just been trying to ease into the subject of the characters having supernatural powers, but I think that it would have been much more powerful just having been stated on it's own, rather than drawing special attention to it with the quotation marks.

There's a lot of action in the story so the pace is fast, but not too fast. There's also a little bit of romance thrown in as well, so it's not just all action all the time. The buildup of the romance between Aileen and Colin is really nicely done. I could really feel for them, and feel them get closer to one another. It definitely wasn't insta-love which I was grateful for. When they finally connect it's almost a bit of a relief in a way, at least for me it was, because I think I was rooting for Colin all along.

The writing flows really well for the most part. There are a few parts of the dialogue that are a bit stiff, but it's nothing so bad as to take away from the story. There are a lot of well placed pop culture references, (in addition to the Charmed references on the first few pages) Sometimes, a lot of pop culture references can be distracting, but that wasn't the case here. They each add a bit more description or even a chuckle or two to the storyline.

There's one plot point that I was very curious/confused about, and that was why Aileen was so obsessed with always finding her cell phone or knowing where it is. Maybe I didn't read closely enough, but I don't think I ever read why she is always looking for it. A strange thing to be curious about I know, but I can't help it.

I don't want to spoil the ending, but lets just say that this book definitely leaves you curious to know what'll happen for these characters next. I know I'm very curious.

I'd recommend this to anyone who loves reading about magic and supernatural creatures, or who's looking for a fun read.

I finished Elemental Magic in less than two days and enjoyed every moment. Getting a shiner from an attempted kiss by a sea lion and dealing with poachers and pollution threats are all in a day's work for Aileen Donovan, her brother Keenan, their father and their co-workers. Facing a greedy maniac who wants to salvage the cargo on his sunken ship and dealing with a sea monster that was believed to be extinct, is not so much part of everyday life.

This gripping page-turner is written in such a comfortable, fluent style that one is tempted to continue reading and ignore mundane things like time. The author keeps the perfect balance between riveting action, intrigue, nail-biting suspense and the extremely well-written romantic part of the story. Readers who are interested in the sea and the science surrounding it should find this book a particularly stimulating read. For the fantasy enthusiasts there are numerous magical artefacts, element-wielding characters and my favorite, Setus, the sea dragon.

All the characters in this book are realistic and well fleshed out. Aileen, the main character, isn't the most diplomatic person around but she has a fierce sense of loyalty towards her family and co-workers. She can also kick butt in a fight; especially when she has water at her disposal. Between the pyromaniacs and evil alchemists it is really difficult to work out who the real villain of the story is until the very end. I suggest the sensitive reader keep a couple of Kleenex close by.

I highly recommend Elemental Magic as a thoroughly exciting, often amusing and deeply heart-warming book for readers of all ages. (Ellen Fritz)

I had the chance to get a ebook copy of this book by the author herself, so first thank you to Angela Wallace and thumbs up for publishing this amazing novel all by yourself!

I have to admit that i didn't have expectations when i started reading this book. Ther storyline seemed full of promises but with so many story about magic, elements and all it's hard to find real original storyline. I have to say Angela Wallace delivered an amazing story and more!

I was hooked after only the first chapter. I liked the elemental concept which remind me of a mix of Greek mythology, Avatar : The last airbender and her own ideas.

I also liked Aileen. Except for the elemental part she's a very easy characters to relate. She's clumsy, insecure, a real workaolic and definitely dense when it comes to romance! As for Colin even if he's a little bit of the white knight stereotype he's a very likable character and well we lady can denied it as much as we want but we love a man in uniform! The good point about most characters in the book is that even these who don't have a a big part in the story still have some depth, which is something no all the authors çare to do, they have their own personnality!

My only complaint is that i would have love to learn more about the elemental backstory but there's still the next book for that!

Overall the story flows well and it's definitely a page turner who had me at the edge of my seat a couple of times. Can't wait to read the next one!

When I got Elemental Magic, I thought it was a YA story. Boy, was I surprised to find out it not and I'm wondering why I thought that. It's a paranormal, a mystery, a romance. I loved it! I liked how Greek mythology is part of the story and is told through the characters as they try to solve the mystery of what is sinking ships off the coast of Washington. As Aileen and her brother, Keenan, hide their supernatural powers from the Coast Guard officer, Colin, they work on solving the mystery. Along the way Aileen learns her mother was not what she thought she was. She also learns more about her father and what he did before marrying her mother. Aileen is a little slow on clues given to her but she figured them out and becomes more of the elemental she should be. I liked Aileen. She's feisty and determined to become certified as an elemental so she can help her father and brother perserve nature. Elemental Magic is the first book of the Elementals series. It is a good set up because it explains what they are and gives you insight into their characters. Elemental Magic is imaginative and grabbed my interest from the first page. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. I want to know what happens to them.

I received this book as a goodreads giveaway, and am very happy that I did.

It is a great, fun read. I found the characters enjoyable, and, although they can wield water (I kept picturing Katara's movements and water manipulation from Avatar: The Last Airbender) they were all believable, and likable. I quickly liked all of the characters, and very quickly became interested in Aileen and Colin's relationship. The story is well done. Not too complicated, with more focus on characters than on creating an overly complicated mystery/adventure, which is how I enjoy urban fantasy. I read for characters, and these are characters I would like to read more of.

The book does have a few problems, but mostly editorial. Colin orders fish then takes a bite of his hamburger, a change in the font used; but nothing major, and nothing that really takes away from the enjoyment of the story.

I wish I could have read this book on a beach, looking out at the water, imagining the sea creatures living in the water, waiting to see if Cetus would show up. A wonderful, fun book, great for if you're looking for some nice summer reading.

Aileen Donovan isn't just a research scientist at the Undina Reasearch Center in Westport Washington who happens to be attractive and available. Nor is she just Seamus' daughter nor just Keenan's sister. She is an elemental, a supernatural being tasked with caring for the earth and its animals.

Aileen is a water elemental and as such she has learned how to harness her powers to use the water but she is still an apprentice and it certainly doesn't help that the very animals she is tasked to protect make her the butt of their jokes.

When her human Coast Guard friend Colin asks for her help as a researcher to locate a ship that has been declared lost Aileen agrees to help.

With the power of a whirlpool, Aileen's life has suddenly shifted...and not just in the elemental world!

This was a very engaging read. Quick paced story, with a few twists and turns as well as great characters make for a book that is hard to put down. I will definitely be reading the next in the series.

This book was great. The author introduces us to Aileen, who is a water elemental. Aileen is trying to finish her apprenticeship when she gets called in to offer her insight to a lost transport ship. Once they find the bodies and ship, Aileen and her family (who are also water elementals) realize that there is something different about this case. Along for the ride is US Coast Guard Colin Benson (Aileen's love interest, she doesn't realize it at first). This book doesn't just look at the investigation or the potential relationship between Colin and Aileen. Throughout the investigation, Aileen is led closer to who she actually is and finding her place among her family, who are renowned for their abilities. Overall, this is a great, easy read. I liked the fact the Colin-Aileen relationship didn't dominate the book (think mercy thompson series) and that the information about Aileen and her family wasn't spewed out at the beginning. Recommended to anyone who like UF with a bit of romance.

A big thank you to the author for an ebook copy of her novel. This book is a nice light read (not light subject wise but in that you could take it with you and read it over a weekend). There is lots of interesting little tidbits about a secret world and mythology we as humans know nothing about. We also get introduced to the characters and get a feel for them without a big in-depth back story, or chapters and chapters at the beginning getting to know them (which in my opinion can often start a book off slow paced and boring lol) and slowly learn about them through the book as they are learning about themselves. Look forward to seeing further development of the characters and getting to know them on a deeper level hopefully in book #2. This is a great read if you are looking for something fast paced and are into the fantasy/romance genre and are always on the lookout for a book that has that little something different from all the rest to make the story unique. Will definitely recommend to some people who I know would enjoy reading it as much as I did.

The author graciously gave me a free copy of her book for my Kindle for review. I was pleasantly surprised by the story--after so many books have come out lately where the main character possesses some type of supernatural power, I was excited to read about a girl who can control the element of water. This was something different and fresh for me to read.

The main character, Aileen Donovan, is an elemental with control over water. There are other people who also can control water as well as people who have control over earth, wind, or fire. This story pulled me in right away, and there are so many twists and turns throughout that I couldn't guess what was going to happen next. Just when I thought of a potential direction the story was going to head in, I'd find out I was wrong, which is a good thing! I love a story that keeps me guessing!

Kudos to the author for weaving a suspenseful, intricate supernatural mystery! I will definitely be reading the sequel, and as a matter of fact, I already have it downloaded to my Kindle!

Aileen is a water elemental whose job is to protect the oceans. After a ship mysteriously sinks taking with it the entire crew and the cargo, mysterious things start happening in her small coastal community. When people come into contact with a strange coral like substance found on the body of one of the sailors, they seem to go insane.

Adding to her troubles, an evil alchemist is determined to get the cargo for himself and he's decided that she is in the way.

Together with Colin, a sailor with the Coast Guard, she needs to find the cargo and stop it from falling into the wrong hands.

Elemental Magic is like those old fashioned adventure novels I used to read as a child. It reminded me a little of an Alistair Maclean novel. No sex, no bad language, just a good straightforward good versus evil adventure.

Moderate violence.

The premise of Elemental Magic sounds intriguing, and I’m happy to say it doesn’t disappoint!

Aileen is a water elemental still honing her powers. Suddenly, she is put to the test when a ship laden with mysterious cargo goes missing, a sea dragon attacks, and she joins her friends and family in a race against a dangerous alchemist to find the missing cargo.

Plenty of magic keeps the story moving at a rapid pace. The addition of creatures like mermaids, nereids, and sea dragons keeps the reader wondering what other secrets Wallace’s mythology has in store.

The romance is sweet and light, allowing the mystery and action to take center stage in this book. I’m looking forward to the next book, Dry Spell, to see how Aileen and Colin’s romance continues!

I was sent an e-book copy of Elemental Magic by Angela Wallace and I was pretty excited to read it for a few reasons. I am a big fan of books that have anything to do with paranormal and mythology. To have a book that was both, was really exciting. The author did a great job at getting you hooked into the story and it was easy to imagine everything going on. It was a nice change for it to be about Elementals, instead of the usual vampires and werewolves (altho I do like those as well) it was just a pleasent change. This book was totally worth the read and when it ended, I just can't wait to read the second one (Dry Spell).I would recommend this for Young Adults and adults alike, especially those interested in paranormal.

I had the pleasure to receive this e-book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I liked it very much. Especially the fact that from the outside the Elemental are just like us.

I liked the fact that Aileen is not just heroic. She's human. She makes mistake, she's insecure, she can have strong feelings, etc.

I also liked the Elemental aspect. Their culture and history, past and present are very interesting.

I'm looking forward to reading the sequel and I hope to learn more about Aileen's mother...

I'll also want to read Angela Wallace's other books!

I really enjoyed the story. It has a supernatural plot, but it is not the normal supernatural story. The characters are Elementals. They control what connects with their Element. The elements correspond with Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. According to the story, the Elementals were created by God. Although the views of the author differ from my beliefs, I still found the story enjoyable and was caught up trying to solve the mystery within the story. I enjoyed the twists the plot took. It is a fairly good length story and can easily be enjoyed in an afternoon/evening.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It had the right balance of mystery, suspense, romance, and the paranormal. Angela Wallace did an excellent job of making the characters seen like normal every day people, not super-heroes/villans like some authors tend to do in their stories.

I recommend this to everyone from young teen and up. And plan to read the next book in the series "Dry Spell".

Thanks Angela.

I loved the blending mythologies in this book. Cetus, the Nereids, Elementals and Alchemists mixed all together with a few other magical elements to create a fun, fast-paced ride on the coast! Aileen is a very real character who often lets her own feelings and desires get the best of her, and the relationships between the cast of characters is great.
