In part two of Message to Adolf, with World War II escalating things have become quite heated for the Adolfs. Adolf Kaufman is now enrolled in a Hitler Youth Academy. While there he quickly is taught to distinguish between races and religions. He would eventually hand out stars of David to Jews in his community. His work, some of which would be physically difficult, would lead to a visit with the Führer. Unfortunately as young Kaufman would reach such heights, he like Kamil and Tohge before him would find out that Hitler may have a very heavy secret he is hiding.

Dr. Osamu Tezuka (手塚治虫) was a Japanese manga artist, animator, producer and medical doctor, although he never practiced medicine. Born in Osaka Prefecture, he is best known as the creator of Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion. He is often credited as the "Father of Anime", and is often considered the Japanese equivalent to Walt Disney, who served as a major inspiration during his formative years. His prolific output, pioneering techniques, and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him such titles as "the father of manga" and "the God of Manga."

Sandwhiched between the opulent display of (supposed) Aryan dominance at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany; and the idiotic pissing contest over a hunk of land between the Israelis and Palestinians in the early 1980s (winner is the team who can outdo the other’s previous atrocity), Message to Adolf, Part 2 tells the second half of Osamu Tezuka’s serial epic concerning three different lads named Adolf, and all the inevitably tragic ways their lives mirror and intersect with one another. Adolf # 1, the son of a German diplomat and a Japanese woman, is a shy weed of a boy who, through an informative education at school for Hitler Youths, becomes a despicable monster. Adolf # 2, the son of a Jewish baker, is a native-born refugee living in Kobe, Japan who stumbles into some intrigue concerning some documents proving Hitler’s descendancy from Jewish stock. Adolf # 3’s identity should be somewhat of a given at this point.

This impressive and sprawling morality tale meshes adventure with historical account to weave a thrilling and often bleak odyssey out of the diverging and converging toils and travails of the Jews in Germany, as well as the shamefully ignored (at least over here in the U.S.) terror that Japanese civilians faced during the war, when they were getting the shit bombed out of them by the “good” guys on a daily basis. The enormous and lively cast is replete with police informers, Nazi creeps, Geishas, Yakuza women, Russian spies, and of course just your average people who wish they could enjoy the promised joys of life—love, family, the security of an income, a roof over their heads—without getting murdered by all the petulant children who somehow end up being world leaders with their ready and willing packs of psychopathic sycophants slobbering around their well-polished boot heels.

But really, this makes the book sound more aggressive than it actually reads. While the book is brutal and relentless in its depiction of historical violence, Tezuka is careful to keep all conflicting viewpoints of multiple countries, ethnicities and dogmatic beliefs well in mind. Ultimately, this book is a brooding on violence and the cruelty of the world, but it also offers up a somewhat transcendental take on the insignificance and farce inherent in the lives of these little men and women with their big weapons. The way Tezuka sees it, being above violence and hate is close enough to hope. And that’s a pretty enough message without any more say-so from me.

Vážná manga, co si ale pořád ponechává své způsoby jak téma či situaci odlehčit, mě baví. A u Zprávy Pro Adolfa je všechno. Výtvarná stránka, příběh, forma, vyváženost „chutí“. Navíc musím vyzvednout i samotné české vydání, zejména odvedenou práci Anny Křivánkové. Překlad je skvělý, pocitově perfektně sedí, nedrhne. K tomu poznámky co upevňují děj do kontextu a skvělý doslov, který vás donutí ohlédnout se za tím, co jste zrovna přečetli. Já bych zrušil předmluvy a zavedl bych podobné doslovy od lidí, co mají vhled a po přečtení si už můžou dovolit obsah konkrétně analyzovat. Samotný dej druhé knížky je skvělý, nebojí se jít hlouběji a začíná v něm rezonovat Tezukův odpor k válce. Paralela mezi Adolfy je tu čím dál jasnější a efektivně ilustruje právě pošetilost nenávisti, fanatismu a zbytečnost války. Musím i konstatovat že Tezuka zvládl konec skvěle a udržel si kvalitu příběhu do poslední tečky.

Tezuka, the godfather of manga, late in his life and career, puts it all together to make his masterpiece. Amazing, multi-layered story, with equal parts history and dramatic entertainment. Terrific art, thoughtfully and masterfully constructed. His great story of the twentieth century. The second part gets deeper, richer, almost manic in its brutality as the war heats up and the stories and Tezuka's consistent themes emerge and entertwine. Masterpiece.

Osamu Tezuka byl českému čtenáři zatím vzdálen v mlze japonštiny. Pokud tímto jazykem nevládnete, neměli jste šanci si od něj cokoliv přečíst. Možná se ptáte: „A měli bychom?“ Rozhodně měli, protože Osamu Tezuka patří mezi největší klasiky ve svém žánru.

Tím žánrem je manga a velký dluh českému čtenáři začalo splácet nakladatelství Crew. Bylo z čeho vybírat, protože Tezuka toho měl za sebou opravdu hodně. Zpráva pro Adolfa (rozdělená na první a druhou část) byla asi to nejlepší, čím mohli začít. Tezukův styl bývá někdy přirovnáván k západnímu stylu komiksů – a tím pádem je pro západního čtenáře přijatelnější (podobně je u nás oblíbený Haruki Murakami, jehož japonské romány hodně odkazují na evropskou kulturu). Navíc část příběhu (ke kterému se ještě dostanu) se odehrává v Evropě a i to je nám blízké. A třetí důvod, proč je toto ideální vstup do Tezukovy tvorby (ale vlastně i do mangy jako takové): Tezuka se zde krotil, co se týče svých vyjadřovacích způsobů.

Příběh Zprávy pro Adolfa začíná v roce 1936, kde zrovna probíhají olympijské hry. Zatímco v Německu se už Adolf Hitler pevně drží kormidla, svět s ním zatím příliš velkou zkušenost nemá – jeho nejhorší dny mají teprve přijít. A tak zatímco němečtí atleti stoupají na stupínky vítězů, japonský novinář Seiko Tóge sledující olympiádu přímo z tribuny má hovor od svého bratra žijícího v Berlíně. Chce se sejít, protože má dokumenty, které otřesou pozicí německého vůdce. Než ale k setkání dojde, bratr je po smrti. Druhá linie příběhu sleduje dva Adolfy v Japonsku – kamarády, z nichž jeden je syn židovského pekaře a druhý syn významného japonského armádního hodnostáře. Jejich životy, na začátku spojené silným přátelstvím, se pochopitelně vinou dějin rozejdou, ale jak už to u správného příběhu bývá, nakonec se zase shledají. Příběh se ale vůbec nevyvíjí tak, jak čtenář může očekávat. Tezuka se nebojí odbočit z vyprávěné linie a rozehrát jinou, zdánlivě a na první pohled nesouvisející partii.

Kniha má jedno hlavní téma – co s člověkem udělá zlo a jak se mu můžete postavit. V příběhu vystupuje hned několik záporáků – a ten s černým knírkem překvapivě nepatří k těm nejhorším. Protože on funguje víceméně jako lampa – lampa, v jejímž stínu se odehrávají mnohem zajímavější osudy. Příběh má filmové tempo, takže dojde k několika dramatickým obratům a k několika scénám, kdy se čtenářovo srdce zastaví. Silné téma pochopitelně přináší silné momenty, a Osamu Tezuka se jich rozhodně nebojí. Umí jít až na dřeň emocí a na hranici snesitelného. Ale velmi dobře ví, kde ta hranice je a kdy už nedojít do světa emočního kýče.

Dovedu si představit, jak bolestné to musí být například pro Japonce – svůj národ nijak nešetří. Kniha vyšla už na začátku osmdesátých let a k nám jí to tedy trvalo skoro čtyři desetiletí. Pro mangu jsou typické kresby, které zdůrazňují emoční vypětí a často toto zobrazení sahá až někam k parodii nebo k americkým animákům. Osamu Tezuka se ve Zprávě pro Adolfa v tomto směru dost krotil. Stále to sice je manga se vším, co k ní patří (takže se připravte na to, že budete číst „pozpátku, tedy od konce knihy na začátek“), ale protože vypráví vážné téma, s těmito prvky nakládá obezřetně, jako se vzácným kořením. Co se mi hodně líbilo je, že způsob vykreslení postav odpovídá jejich charakteru. Poznáte tak záporáka nebo klaďase – a to dokonce tehdy, když se z klaďase stane záporák. Oceňuji také důkladnou práci s panely, kdy klasické a očekávatelné rozložení čas od času nahradí jiné, které umocní nebo zdůrazní právě probíhající děj.


Vyzdvihnout je třeba také práci překladatelky – Anny Křivánkové. Oba díly – cca 650 a 600 stran – jsou plné japonské faktografie a terminologie. Přeložit to a uvést do správného kontextu muselo být náročné, ale celkový výsledek působí impozantně a pečlivě.

Ať už se na knihu (respektive na knihy, dva díly se prodávají samostatně, byť vyšly jen pár týdnů za sebou) podívám z jakéhokoliv hlediska, nemám ji vůbec co vytknout. Je to má první manga, kterou jsem četl takto důkladně a zažil jsem něco skvělého. Po dočtení jsem začal studovat, jak má manga vypadat, co se zde dělá a jak a otevřel se přede mnou úplně nový svět. Poslední měsíce jsem měl komiksové – jen namátkou: Essex County, Padoucnice, Kosmo knedlíci… Zpráva pro Adolfa toto období završila jako pověstná třešnička na dortu. To dílo je ohromné, bezchybné a dechberoucí. Jestli chcete začít komiksem, nebo přímo mangou, nemáte asi lepší volbu. Vedle zmíněné Essex County je toto nejlepší komiksový počin roku 2019 (do této soutěže ještě patří Providence, která mi leží na nočním stolku). A já jen doufám, že to nebyla poslední manga od Osamy Tezuky, která vyšla v českém překladu.

En este segundo y último volumen, la trama de espionaje continúa, así como el tono violento, pero ambos ceden el protagonismo al trasfondo histórico y al modo en que este afecta a los diversos personajes. Están tan bien desarrollados, cuentan con tanta profundidad, que se puede decir que le arrebatan a los tres Adolf del título su preponderancia. Tanto Hitler como Kaufmann y Kamil constituyen las tres piezas del motor que provoca los movimientos de la trama, pero son los diversos personajes a su alrededor los que componen y rellenan el mosaico que, a fin de cuentas, da cuerpo a esta historia.
Hitler y la guerra provocada por su sueño imperial y de pureza étnica es la pieza que propicia el telón de fondo histórico de la obra, un tapiz sobre el que se desarrolla el relato de una amistad infantil reconducida al enfrentamiento y la tragedia por el nazismo. Semejante drama ha sido tratado bastante por la literatura, incluso en el mismo escenario, por ejemplo en "Paradero desconocido", de Kressmann Taylor, o "Reencuentro", de Fred Uhlman. Pero, por intensidad del odio y magnitud del daño, los dos Adolf de la obra de Tezuka quizás mantengan mayor deuda con los cinematográficos Judá Ben Hur y Messala. En la degradación de su amistad, en su reconversión en víctima y verdugo, se encuentra el núcleo troncal de este relato. Sin embargo, es tal la importancia, el peso que adquiere el drama humano de fondo edificado sobre la interrelación entre los, en teoría, personajes secundarios, que su desarrollo acaba siendo tan importante como la trama central. De hecho, me queda la sensación de que a la obra le sobra el penúltimo capítulo, precisamente en el que se da fin al enfrentamiento de los Adolf antaño amigos. Igualmente, salgo de la lectura con la sensación de que, si hay un auténtico personaje protagonista de esta historia, ese es el luchador y vital Toge.
"Adolf" resulta ser una obra monumental, que describe los hechos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial desde varios frentes, centrándose en cómo afectó esta a la población civil. Se sirve de la relación entre los seres humanos de diversa condición, inmersos en el mayor conflicto armado que el mundo haya visto, para describir el sufrimiento y la condición humana en momentos extremos. Y lo hace con un dibujo sencillo, magnífico en su utilidad y su capacidad narrativa. Una maravilla expositiva del noveno arte.

Probably the most cohesive of Tezuka's "cram all of life's absurdities" comix without hitting you too hard over the head with it's -ahem- message. Toge is still at the story's front in this volume, which was kind of disappointing seeing as how he introduced himself as a minor character, yet he marries into the most fucked up family imaginable during the most violent war ever; it's a little too convenient for an arch that isn't even the focus of the story, and that problem pops up here and there with Kamil and Kaufmann, too. Kaufmann's story here is probably the best, being the most vile character now that Lamp and Egg are (mostly) on the sideline. Kamil isn't given the depth I would've liked to see, and miss Ogi and Colonel Honda are now one-dimensional where the first volume made me think they have a bigger role. Tezuka fans have come to accept over the years that he mostly wrote characters as stereotypes; think of him as the Gene Roddenberry of Eastern comic ideals. These tropes are used again and again so he can tell his stories in the most cinematic way comix can, and hey, at least he finished this one. Some of the monologue from Toge sounds more like 24th century utilitarianism after-thought instead of 20th century altruism.

I can't bash it all, though. It really comes together nicely. From the arctic north to the Palestinian deserts, the story of these three Adolf's teaches a message that Tezuka had been trying to work into every story he ever printed: that of love and personal achievement, done with characters with real pathos and an understandable misconception of the direction of life and where it *leads* (something Tezuka was obsessed with and drove into the ground with "Phoenix") in relation to kith and kin, and how patriotism quickly becomes fascism. Tezuka was always looking for the story-arch of the cosmos (Apollo, Phoenix, etc.)-- talkin' bout a thing called love, and here he's pointing past the fence, all the way to alpha-centauri, saying, "Engage."

Scrivo sulla pagina del secondo volume, ma in realtà la mia recensione riguarda entrambi i volumi.
Questa graphic novel è fatta veramente bene! E' assolutamente attendibile dal punto di vista storico, i disegni rendono benissimo le emozioni e le personalità dei vari personaggi e la trama è intricata ed emozionante.
I tre Adolf sono il tristemente noto, e due bambini tedeschi che vivono in Giappone. Uno è figlio di un ufficiale nazista, mentre l'altro è un ebreo figlio di panettieri. I due bambini sono amici, ma le vicende storiche e il clima antisemita che si sta affermando sempre più li porteranno a ritrovarsi su due fronti contrapposti per il resto della loro vita.
In tutto questo c'è un intrigo che attraversa tutto il libro: la ricerca spasmodica di alcuni documenti che proverebbero le origini parzialmente ebree di Hitler. Tutti sono interessati a questi documenti il cui ritrovamento avrebbe ovviamente delle ripercussioni enormi sul destino della Germania e del mondo intero.
Ci saranno continui inseguimenti, intrighi, tradimenti che terranno col fiato sospeso per tutta la lettura.
Mi è piaciuto il modo in cui le vite dei vari personaggi sono intrecciate fra loro e tendono periodicamente a interferire l'una con l'altra.
Si tratta anche di una storia di formazione se si considerano i due Adolf che all'inizio dell'opera sono bambini, poi diventano dei ragazzi e infine degli adulti che compiranno delle scelte più o meno consapevoli e indubbiamente condizionate dagli eventi che li circondano.
La lettura mi ha presa molto, ma non do le cinque stelline perchè è un po' troppo lunghetta. Trovo che se fosse stata sfoltita un pochino ne avrebbe solo guadagnato.
Un plauso alla casa editrice J-Pop che ha iniziato a pubblicare le opere di Tezuka.

Dvojice svazků Zpráva pro Adolfa je něco úžasného.
čtení to neí vůbec jednoduché a lehké ( vahou ani obsahem).
Pohled na událsoti druhé světové války z několika úhlů a tragické lidské osudy jednoho z nejhorších období naší historie v podánní úžasného Tezuky můžu směle doporučit. Kresba je jasná, přesná a čistá a každý pochopí, proč byl právě tenhel autor pro moderní mangu zásadní.
čtenář coyb pozorovatel propadu civilizovanosti a korupce nevinných, zabíjení a mučení si určitě užije nejednu těžkou chvilku.
Velmi oceňuji spousty zajímavých historických faktů především z Japonska a hlavně inforamce překladatelky Aničky Křivánkové, kterých je požehnaně a společně s doslovem nabízí spousty zajímavých informací o dnešním i minulém Japonsku

Pokud se mě někdo zeptá, jaký komiks o druhé světové válce bych mu doporučil, tak mu řeknu, že si musí přečíst manga příběh o třech Adolfech. Jsou komiksy, které si přečtete a přestože vás pobaví, tak hlubší stopu nezanechají. A potom jsou komiksy, ke kterým se v myšlenkách ještě dlouho vracíte a tak nějak vás poznamenají navždy. “Zpráva pro Adolfa” od Osamu Tezuky je ten druhý typ.

Válka je naprostá zvrácenost. Nedávno jsem někde četl, že ukáže v lidech to nejlepší i to nejhorší. To tak nějak shrnuje, o čem manga “Zpráva pro Adolfa” je. Je to neuvěřitelně komplexní román o válce, o tajných dokumentech se sílou změnit historii, o zvrácených režimech a tajné policii, o přátelství a o tom, jak válka a víra ve všelijaké ideologie dokáže změnit charakter a srdce lidí. Příběh se odehrává v Japonsku a v Evropě, a z pro nás neobvyklého pohledu Japonců sleduje průběh celé druhé světové války od olympiády v Berlíně až po vznik Izraelského státu. Přibližuje politickou atmosféru v Japonsku a v Německu a hlavně sleduje příběhy několika lidí, jejichž osudy se vzájemně protnuly. Z tohoto hlediska se kniha krásně doplňuje se sérií Berlín od Jasona Lutese, která časově předchází “Adolfům” a sleduje předválečný vývoj v Německu z pohledu obyčejných chudých berlíňanů. Manga Osamu Tezuky je však mnohem epičtější a rozmáchlejší.

Obě knihy “Zprávy pro Adolfa” jsou pro mě teprve čtvrtou manga knihou, kterou jsem četl. Rozhodně tedy nejsem znalec mangy. Ale jestli manga v něčem vyniká oproti evropským a americkým komiksům, tak je to zprostředkovávání emocí. Zatímco popis průběhu války je takřka dokumentární, tak příběh hlavních hrdinů je podán velmi emocionálně. Japonští autoři do čtenářů emoce hrnou pod tlakem a to nejen scénářem, ale také kresbou, která je v některých chvílích až karikaturní. Kupodivu to ale ani v tíživých situacích nepůsobí nepatřičně a prostě to funguje a je to strhující. Já jsem čtení osudů hlavních hrdinů velmi prožíval (hlavně v první knize) a chvílemi jsem skoro nedýchal. Osamu Tezuka čtenářovými emocemi řádně mixuje. Oblíbenou postavu, kterou jste měli za statečnou, začněte skutečně nenávidět, protože se z něj stává zku*vená nacistická svině. Na druhou stranu ale víte, že by ho statečnost zabila a nikomu by to stejně nepomohlo. Je to obrovská směs protichůdných emocí a Osamu Tezuka vám stále nemilosrdně vypráví jeho příběh plný vnitřních pochybností a pomalu se měnící morálky. O co více jste ho předtím měli rádi, o to silněji ho nyní nenávidíte. A to je jen jedna z hlavních postav.

“Zpráva pro Adolfa” vycházela v Japonsku v letech 1983 – 1985. Na její vizuální stránce její stáří ale vůbec není znát. Kresba je svěží a je plná dynamiky. Styl kresby se na některých panelech mění v závislosti na ději. Někdy kresba vypadá jako typická manga a jindy zase máte pocit, že čtete evropský komiks a nebo sledujete animaci Walta Disneye. Nikdy to ale nevybočuje do nějakých větších rušivých extrému a jednotlivé postavy jsou vždy jasně rozeznatelné. Někdy jsem si říkal, že je škoda, že kresbě nevěnuji dostatečnou pozornost kvůli strhujícímu ději.

And as I read and hoped, more then I had ever hoped through all the myriad of WWII films and books, that Adolf Kaufmann would turn back to the courageous child he was at the beginning, I found myself for the first and perhaps only time in my life, desiring redemption for a Nazi soldier. And that, above all else, should cement the 'GOD' Tezuka among the great authors of the 20th century.

Redemption never comes for Kaufmann. And it's heartbreaking.
Now I feel sad...

Somehow Tezuka's epic tale of three Adolfs making their way through their diverging lives ends up with Palestinian liberators being compared to Nazis (because obviously a member of the Hitler Youth who bought into Nazi ideology would find himself right at home fighting Israel). I couldn't believe it and found it really upsetting.

Alright, I freely admit that Osamu Tezuka is perhaps the only author who can compel me to read a 2 volume manga tome (note: each volume is roughly a little over 600 page!) and not hate myself for staying up half the night to try and finish reading it! Hands down, Tezuka is a master storyteller. This is not a story with just good and bad characters. This story is full of very-good, kinda-good-but-possibly-bad, start-off-good-but-turned-bad-over-time, really-bad and I'm-not-sure-how-feel characters involved in several complex storylines with a major story arc. In other words, this story is not for the casual reader who expects immediate payoffs. This is story you have to commit to. Also be beware that racial hatred, war and violence in this manga are not going be "glorified" or "toned down" because of sensibilities. If anything, these themes are poignant reminders of their futility. A must read for Tezuka fans and anyone who wants to invest their time in reading an adult manga that does not involve teenaged girls in school frocks fighting demons or falling in love with the demon/vampire/monster of the week.

Tezuka spins out another masterful yarn as the series comes to an end. Absolutely wonderful treatment of human relations and the stress of war..Adolf Hitler's madness is beautifully portrayed as the 1000-year reich comes crashing down..the brutal aftermath of firebombings in Japan, the bitter bloodshed of the Israeli-Arab War all bring to a fitting end the series which began so innocuosly one afternoon in Berlin

"message to adolf" ist ein episches werk, das auf spannende und emotional sehr nahegehende art und weise die geschichte dreier männer mit dem namen adolf erzählt. als monumentale rückblende aus dem jahr 1983 in das jahr 1936 werden deren lebensgeschichten aufgerollt und verwoben. der eine adolf ist der berühmteste: adolf hitler, epizentrum des zweiten weltkrieges und ursache von millionenfachem sterben. die zweiten adolfs sind: adolf kamil, ein sohn jüdischer bäcker in kobe, der einen schulfreund hat: adolf kaufmann, dessen vater deutscher ist und mit einer japanerin verheiratet ist.
schon von frühester kindheit an müssen die beiden jungen adolfs in japan erleben, wie rassismus und völkerhass freundschaften auf die probe stellt und leben vernichten kann. dies ist eine der hauptstränge der story.

weiters ist es aber auch ein durchgängiger spionagethriller über geheime dokumente, die belegen, dass adolf hitler teilweise jüdischer herkunft ist. der hickhack und die bedeutung dieser papiere verflicht alle beteiligten des buches in großes persönliches leid und es ist teilweise haarsträubend, wie verbittert um diese papiere gekämpft wird.
neben all dem bilden die beiden teile des buches auf nahegehende weise die schrecken und hässlichkeiten des krieges ab. dass das alles in form eines mangas funktionieren kann, ist fast unglaublich, aber osamu tezuka schafft es tatsächlich, leid und schmerz mit der humorvollen art zu erzählen, die mangas zu eigen sind, und beides zu verbinden. niemals ist er dabei pietätlos, vielmehr kommt er auf diese weise den tatsachen des lebens auf ungewohnte weise näher und schildert mit immer wieder eingestreuten geschichtlich-dokumentarischen fakten wesentliche ereignisse des zweiten weltkrieges aus japanischer sicht, was eine interessante perspektive darstellt.

die erzählte geschichte ist eine mit der realität verwobene fiktion, die wirklich fesselnd zu lesen ist und seitenweise in tiefe abgründe menschlicher verblendung und ideologischen wahnsinn abtaucht, ohne die ausweglosigkeit dieser verirrungen zu beschönigen oder hoffnung zu geben.
kein happy end: auch das markiert die größe des werks.

Tezuka's most profound successes in Message to Adolf are his vivid, fully realized characters that populate WWII era Japan and Germany. The half Japanese/ half German boy who becomes a scion of the Hitler Youth, the Jewish baker's son who protected him from bullies as a child, the Japanese journalist who stumbles into secret documents detailing Hitler's Jewish ancestry; all are examined with honesty and care. Even when characters are drawn specifically as villains, (Hitler included) Tezuka writes them to be understandable, relatable, human instead of caricatures. Westerners do not often see the war from this vantage, and the book is remarkable for its' ability to illuminate an overwhelmingly prolific subject matter.
The narrative is rewarding both as an action/suspense/mystery as well as a polemic against fanaticism and absolutism. Published initially in serialized form over 2 years, it is perhaps a bit too drawn out, and dialogue at times feels awkward or like something's missing. I don't know how to judge whether that's a function of the author or the translator though. And it seems a common enough phenomenon in Manga, that I'm willing to overlook it as something "lost in translation". It's easy to forgive in light of Tezuka's engaging illustrations. He conveys extreme ranges of emotion with the simplest of line-work on his characters faces, contrasted by intricate, detailed inks in his shadows, architecture, and landscapes. This juxtaposition helps ground the stylistic manga faces in the realities of the war, and makes for free flowing quick reading.
Final Verdict: Message to Adolf is a tremendous work that was an early pioneer in validating comics as a medium for all subject matters. The 2 Vol. collection published in 2012 is gorgeous and intriguing on your bookshelf. This is one to own friends.

The book in 2 parts is Osama Tezuka all the way. Readers/viewers familiar with his style will find that this is also a tale of atrocities committed in the name of race,suffering & redemption. The canvas is vast from 1936 to 1948 with brief but crucial climax points in 1973 & 1983.
Artwork is good, almost European, especially the backgrounds as far as cars & buildings are concerned.
As in Manga the figures are cartoonish.Of the 3 Adolfs very little is devoted to the development of Adolf Kamil.I would have liked a bit more on Kamil. The transformation of Adolf Kaufmann in to a Jew hating monster over the years is brilliantly depicted.
My major complaint against these two volumes is about the artwork being mirrored to allow publication in the left-to-right reading format. It definitely affects the visual accuracy of the narrative as Nazis salute with their left hand,German cars are shown as right hand drives,almost all soldiers are shown as left handed. Perhaps the most jarring note of the story happened when Toge is shot,the script is faithfully translated to refer to his injured left shoulder, however due to the mirroring of the artwork it shows his right arm being injured!!
However it is still an excellent effort from one of the masters of Manga
