"The earth is in trouble, but we can save it! Kids at Bradley Junior High can make a difference. Kids all over the world can make a difference!" -Allison Cloud Speaking at the Earth Alert Fair
When Allison is elected chairperson of the seventh-grade Earth Alert Fair, she's determined to get the kids at Bradley Junior High concerned about the earth. But things almost turn into a disaster when Stacy the Great decides that she wants to run the fair--her way!
Researching 80s/90s YA fiction... I liked the change of pace in the book from reading like a journal entry to easy dialogue, and then having the phone call conversations. It was nice how this book talked about standing up for a cause that you believe in no matter what (especially the environment which is still applicable to today). I appreciated how it talked about how young people can make a difference by starting small in their community, and that it touched on cultural differences with the main character being Native American and expressing how she feels. I liked the character descriptions at the beginning of the book, it helped me know the main characters without having to read other books before this one.
The way the blurbs are written, it makes it sound like it’s going to be a more impactful book than it is. The 90s of it is so overwhelming. Honestly, the picketing should have come first with the fair as a compromise. There is no set up “big bad” for them to take down. The characters probably would have come off better if they were in high school instead of middle school. Arizonna seemed like an idiot. The whole Billy thing was just stupid. So, no, I didn’t care for this book.
Earth Alert The weirdest thing happened with this review. My computer ate it. I was halfway done with it and then half of it was just missing. I think tho I can summarize it. There wasn’t that much to it.
Allison is put over Bradley’s fair and she gives it a Save The Earth theme and names it “Eart Alert” A new student named Arizona whose from LA comes up to her and offers to help out with it. Sabrina (of course) has a crush on him. Billy (the guy Allison tortured) also volunteers but gets jealous when he hears Arizona will be helping. Sabrina gets her brother (Sam) and his friends (Nick and Jason) to volunteer.
They have a meeting and decide to make all natural foods and Allison comes up with the idea to play Hackey Sack. Sabrina decides to be over the posters. Katies and Randy are going to be over the food. Allison will be over the games and Arizona says he’ll help Allison with the games.
Arizona clearly has taken an interest in Allison and gives her one of the many friendship bracelets he wears. Only Billy notices this and loses interest on helping with the fair. Stacey wanted a Romance themed fair but this doesn’t stop her from interfering in Allison’s fair. Randy and Allison find out they only have 200.00 to work with because Stacey has taken the rest of the money and gotten a roller coaster (and some other rides that go against the parks theme). She’s also made her and Eva (chairpersons). They go so fair as to call a meeting without the GT girls knowing about it. In the end, they agree to use the rides but in a separate part of the carnival.
Arizonna asks Allison out, but she only says yes not to hurt his feelings. When she tells Billy, he’s angry at first but then calms down and says he understands and apologizes. He offers to shop and help make the food for the fair. (They’ll be making the food with their own funds). Allison tries to think of a way to let Arizona down and they all think if they get him interested in someone else he’ll forgot Allison. So, Sabs volunteers and starts acting out of character and turns herself into a surfer chick. Eventually Arizonna realizes that Allison already has a “special friend” and he seems to like Sabs (even though he knows she doesn’t know a thing about suffering).
Since no one liked Stacey’s idea to start selling tickets early she announces tickets will go on sell early in class. On the day of the fair, first it looks like a bust. Everyone is over on Stacey’s side with the rides. Then Iron Wombat start to play and everyone drifts to their side. The fair is a success, but Allison is disappointed afterwards because all the students liter and there’s trash all over the football field. So, she throws a protest.
They all get suspended but Mr. Handson says he’ll see what he can do about getting cardboard trays in the lunch room. By the end of the book Sabrina has all of Arizona's bracelets (Allison only got two).
Rating 5 : I didn’t really have any thoughts for this one. The Earth Alert Fair was a good idea but honestly I can see why the other students didn’t show up for it at first. It just really didn’t sound all that fun and I’m sure it could have been fun and educational at the same time.

Seru aja ceritanya nyimak anak2 SMP di Amerika, gimana persahabatan dan kepedulian mereka sama lingkungan hidup. anyway aku baca yg versi terjemahannya sih, meski beberapa ada yg aneh atau nggak pas, tp keseluruhan oke dan sesuai gaya bahasa remaja. good job, Zara Zettira ZR. :))
