hokuto. what the frik? he slapped chiwa! she suspected him of cheating on her and he slapped her and the story just moved on like that was normal and didn't merit an apology and WHAT

WHAT THE FRICK FRACK PADDY WHACK HOKUTO

look i will put up with melodrama and questionable gender dynamics because apparently that's the price of getting to read any josei these days but when we start edging into abuse territory i am not going to be feeling it. happy marriage, you are officially on notice

if i take a shot everytime chiwa cried or apologized i would be in the hospital getting my stomach pumped 😵‍💫
yo he straight up slaps her and then kisses her 💀 and then tells her he bought her an island?! 😭💀 ahh, the duality. (tbh not that surprising considering his behavior since the beginning)

ps woman, he’s not obliged to visit his father 🤦‍♀️

oh but i did like this quote!:

“We don’t have to change each other’s way of life. But something new might be born from coexisting together.”

This volume starts with Chiwa dreaming about Hokuto and his business because he’s been working all day and night and she barely spends time with him. Hokuto is really busy right now but things are quieter at her work. After the incident during the night out, asahani decides to stop being his manager. She’s removed from that position but he didn’t complain about her work so now, she’s sakurabas assistant. She feels relieved after the confession and asahani is out doing some shopping so she doesn’t have to see them. Later on, she tells Hokuto because asahani didn’t feel comfortable working with the wife of a client and he seems happy because now she’s with sakuraba and he wants her to work hard. Later on we find out seiji is at the hospital and his condition got worse. Soma tells Chiwa about it but Hokuto didn’t say a word. She goes to visit him but he’s unconscious and soma is there. Chiwa asks about the mamiya family and his illness. The other members left once his condition stabilized and she’s in no position to share what happened. Chiwa tries to convince Hokuto to go to the hospital but he doesn’t want to. She doesn’t believe he had anything to do with his mother’s death but still he doesn’t feel like going. She can’t believe he’s being that cold hearted with his own father and she doesn’t recognize that side of Hokuto. He tells her a little bit about how his dad raised her. If he made two mistakes in a test, he would get mad. Those mistakes couldn’t happen in real life and he was really strict about it. He laid a path for him and he followed it but he’s still mad. Chiwa decides to go back to her old room because she doesn’t want to sleep with him again. The next day, seiji is up and she finds out thanks to Soma. She goes to the hospital and he’s really pale and thin. He’s going to die soon and Chiwa feels sad for him. She cries because she wasn’t able to bring Hokuto but seiji understands. He made mistakes and he wishes he could change his past. He raised Hokuto to be like him so others wouldn’t manipulate or destroy him but he wonders if things could’ve been different. His illness is a bad one and once the doctors found out it was too late. He doesn’t want Hokuto to know and Chiwa tells seiji that she knows he didn’t have anything to do with his mother’s death. He’s about to say something but Shitara enters the room. They have to leave because seiji feels weaker and Chiwa cries again. Shitara wonders if she’s okay because everytime they see each other she’s crying. Chiwa is a cheerful person but she feels powerless because she couldn’t bring Hokuto. Shitara says that she understands because she knows Hokuto better than her. His driving force is to deny his father and if he does that he would lose his existence. Chiwa is only his wife and she shouldn’t impose her values or views on him. She tells her not to get in his way and to be a good wife and Chiwa is devastated. Hokuto gets a call from Shitara because she wants to see his face and she has some documents to drop at his office. One is about work and the other one is about an investigation she made on Chiwa and asahani. Hokuto didn’t go home for two days and his clothes were gone. Chiwa is like a ghost and she’s making mistakes at work and her colleagues notice it. Sakuraba tells her that he can’t look past her mistakes anymore and she should solve her problems and take some rest. She has a free afternoon and she calls Hokuto but he hangs up on her. They meet at the apartment and he looks pale and sad and he faints. She’s about to call the ambulance but he doesn’t want to. They talk and she apologizes. He shouldn’t deny his existence for her but he wishes he could visit his dad. She wants him to come home and to be with her because she can’t live without him. They made up rather quickly and he promises to go back home later on. She’s waiting for him and she made him a bath and later on he calle Shitara. He read everything and that belongs to the past and Chiwa is his wife so she should stay away from their relationship. Shitara believes Chiwa might be cheating on him with her ex boss but Hokuto is fine with it.
Honestly this book is okay. The series overall is fine but nothing extraordinary. What I didn’t like about this book is Hokuto slapping Chiwa. They were both jealous but I think that scene was unnecessary. Also i wish we could have seen more of the mamiya family and what Hokuto is doing to take over and be the next chairman. I feel sad for his dad but I’m waiting to see if he was involved in his mother’s death or if Hokuto was the real target. The end of the volume shows that asahani is probably working with Shitana and he wants to find out about Chiwa and the reason behind her marriage and that would bring a lot of drama. Overall it’s good but nothing spectacular

He slaps her… like I get this is over the top and soap opera in every way but he doesn’t even say sorry…. He bought her an island…. All they do is fight like they litterally make up and then are insecure in the next frame

I said in my review for the previous volume that I no longer like this couple but I’ll still read to the end because I’m curious. However, I’m done. I can no longer support this abusive relationship. From the beginning, Hokuto’s anger flared up yet again and I was already unhappy about this. Pressing a scrapped knee to get the truth is violent interrogation, but my shoujo reading self just skipped through it. However, the straw that broke the camel’s back is that slap! I was shocked and knew I needed to stop reading this especially if the slap followed by a forceful kiss is explained as love. I can’t. I’m so mad.

In addition, this volume starts and immediately Chiwa is just the biggest cry baby and it never ends. I thought we were supposed to believe she’s growing a backbone. She is crying the entire volume, but this doesn’t make what all these other people in the background are doing justifiable. Everyone is trying to break up their marriage and it’s all sorts of annoying.

Lastly, it’s fine for someone to hate family and never reconcile with them. Stop forcing it and listen to your partner and leave him cause he’s violent and abusive. 1/5. I’m done with this series.

2020 Read #9

Well, here is my major feeling with this series thus far: I wish the heroine had more backbone and didn’t take to every difficult situation by crying, withdrawing, or just backtracking. Hokuto is very complicated and at times insufferable, yes, but Chiwa reacts so immaturely. If these two were a couple in real life, at best I’d say they would need couples’ therapy and at worst I’d say they should move to different countries and stay far, far away from each other for the rest of their lives. As it is — Hokuto’s ex is making even more trouble, and I think the series will end with baby news even though I feel Hokuto and Chiwa have a lot more to work on in their relationship before they even think about having offspring. But this is a romance manga aimed at young women, so we probably won’t see nuance this late in the game. All I can do is finish up the series and see what I think overall once all is said and done.

Love this series , i know as a human being i should have a problem with how Hokuto treats Chiwa and stop reading this series , i do have issues with the theme of their relationship but i can't stop reading or loving this series .

It's funny and you know that they both do love each other and that neither of them is perfect .

Review for complete series

Chiwa's father has been nothing but trouble and a financial mess for her to clean up. Even working extra nightshifts don't seem to round up the money but an unusual offer might get her out of this mess: her company's CEO Hokuto can only keep his position in the family business if he were to marry. Hokuto is in need of a wife, Chiwa needs the money. A quickly signed marriage certificate turns them into unlikely flatmates - it's not as though they are romantically involved.

For the longest time, I only read shoujo manga and disregarded any series that were targeted at older readers. I'd often seen Happy Marriage?! during the time when I was working at a comic store and mentally shelved it as not interested - office romance, married couple - none of it caught my interest. It was only during a moment of extreme boredom that I picked the first volume off the shelf and flipped through it. I came to the conclusion that it was one of the most hilarious manga romances I had read and immediately ordered the entire series and promoted Maki Enjouji to an auto-buy author.

About a decade later, I still love this series. Chiwa and Hokuto's relationship is absolutely hilarious, they have me laughing so many times. But in addition to the comedy, I love the chemistry between them and the bond that grows between them as the series progresses. I think this is most strongly seen in Hokuto who transforms from a calculating businessman into a caring husband. I also consider both Chiwa and Hokuto to be very realistic characters as they both definitely have their faults. Funnily, this seems to be one of the most common points of criticism this series seems to receive from other many other readers.

It seems others consider Chiwa a weak female lead and Hokuto as abusive and arrogant. Arrogance aside, I can't agree on either of the other points. Both of them have an argumentive nature - they argue, in fact, they argue a lot. I don't believe either of them is worse than the other in this point and, as both of them rightly say, it's part of their relationship dynamics - they grow stronger after each argument. The difference is the way they express themselves; Chiwa is less confident and cries easily, but she rarely backs down and stands her ground - crying in itself is not a weakness of character, the fact that she can still pull through shows that. Hokuto is very reserved when it comes to showing warm feelings but he is very outspoken when he's upset which in my mind is very realistic. Not everyone is able to express how they really feel and I think it's why these two are often irritated yet also bring out the good in each other.

While domestic abuse certainly is an issue that needs to be addressed more often, I do feel that many people overshoot their target by narrowing down on books or movies that show even the slightest hint of a male character not playing the perfect gentleman. Hokuto is by no means perfect but there isn't a single action of his in this entire series that I would consider as abusive. There is a scene where he slaps Chiwa - a slap is a far cry from hitting or abuse. There is a reason why it's called a wake-up slap - there are times when something like that might really be the only way to get through to someone who is, as in this particular case with Chiwa, in a complete panic and not listening to reason. Had it been the other way around with Chiwa slapping Hokuto, no one would have said a thing. People aren't always rational and the way many fictional characters are criticized in this regard sets unrealistic standards of real people.

With that off my chest, other than the comedy and romance, there's also a bit of a mystery and family issues on both sides to deal with. I don't usually like longer romance series (although Happy Marriage?! isn't all that long with 10 volumes) as they tend to drag but here there are plenty of other elements that keep the story going. Despite the introduction of other love interests along the way, I like how neither Chiwa nor Hokuto ever showed the slightest interest in others.

Finally, I really enjoyed the art in this one. I generally like Maki Enjouji's art but I am particularly fond of it in this series. Her art is also a strong drive for the comedy but the romantic scenes are also beautifully drawn. While I may still prefer shoujo manga (I don't seem to outgrow it...), thanks to Happy Marriage?!, I know that there certainly are manga for older readers that can appeal to me as it's been one of my favourites since I first read it.

SUMMARY

chiwa takanashi is waiting for her husband to fall in love with her. he’s been working late every single night and she hasn’t had any time alone with him. to make matters worse, her boss has made it quite clear that he wants to be with her, despite her constantly telling him that she’s not available.

hokuto mamiya is working long hours at the office to avoid being at home with his wife. he is in love with her but he has trouble making that seen in the subtle moments.

💍 marriage-of-convenience
💍 billionaire

SPOILERS

kaname asahina is her direct supervisor at work, but he knew her all the way back in university. he confessed that he’s still in love with her but she was adamant that nothing would ever happen between them.

hokuto’s father is in the hospital but he refuses to see him. chiwa visits him instead and consistently urges him to visit him soon. they fight over him visiting the hospital or not and chiwa tells him that he’s acting coldhearted about it all. they don’t sleep in the same bed that night and for the next few days hokuto sleeps at the office overnight. they both aren’t sleeping well or functioning in general. chiwa leaves work early at the same time hokuto stops by the apartment to get a change of clothes and they finally see each other after days apart.

misaki shitara is hokuto’s ex-girlfriend but she’s inserting herself in his life. she’s a businesswoman so they periodically having meetings that overlap. she visits his father in the hospital and runs into his wife, making sure to tell her about her past relationship with him. she even goes as far as to hire a private investigator to watch chiwa and kaname, insinuating that she is cheating on him.

hokuto lied to chiwa about working late for a few nights and she thought that he was having an affair. he was actually looking for a present for her and bought a private island for her. hokuto does slap her but i’m interpreting it as a gente get-it-together nudge rather than an abusive behavior. it has to be a splash-of-cold-water-to-the-face kind of wake up call that he wouldn’t care about her sexual inexperience. he prefers that he has her firsts.

i think kaname is calling misaki to find out why chiwa married hokuto in the first place. she’s clearly still hung up on her and misaki is determined to break up their marriage.

Quindi... Come il solito... Lui fa la sua vita e non si preoccupa troppo di lei. Lei va in paranoia e i due litigano. Poi le si rende conto di aver sbagliato e chiede scusa. Perché è sempre lei a scusarmi. Lui ci prova ma poi...

Che poi lui la picchi perché pensa che lo tradisca... Questo non mi è piaciuto.

Ma, tutto sommato, la serie si sta rivelando molto meglio del previsto.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 4 stars for this one 🥰 it’s still a really cute manga series, and I can’t wait to read the last three. 4 stars, because this one had more banter but Hokuto ends up slapping Chiwa across the face and they both didn’t act like it even really happened? I get it’s the style of writing but I wish they would’ve addressed that part just a smidge more. I’m picky, I think hehe 😉 still a “steamy” manga read- which I love 💗

As a fellow cry baby, I like that Chiwa is honest with her feelings. I also liked when Hokuto didn't immediately lose his mind about her boss even though he knew she had lied to him about their previous relationship, I expected a blow up on his end. I don't like when he gets mad and dips though, having the male lead use distance as some kind of punishment is so frustrating.

Review (for the whole manga):
Out of most of the mangaka's manga that I have read so far, I enjoyed this one the most. It's a typical story of how an ordinary girl is forced to marry a rich and superior guy (who was previously her boss) and how the overcome their differences and obstacles that they face along their marriage journey and yet I still enjoyed reading it.

Ugh the Mamiya family problems confuse me. I understand Hokuto’s point of view but I also think Chiwa is right…

But Hokuto disappearing and ghosting his own wife is too much for me… But…. it makes sense with his childhood and how he was raised. It’s still so annoying!!!!
Also, is it weird that I don’t find Chiwa’s crying annoying? Lol it’s like a part of her personality now.

Chiwa and Hokuto have problems as usual. Hokuto’s father is ill and they can’t agree on whether Hokuto should visit him or not. They have a big fight as a result. Plus, Shitara seems to be trying to break them up for some reason. Why else would she be bringing up their past relationships to each other?

Shitara

Surely by now you would think after years of marriage these two would be used to their personalities, but no. Here we are once again with an over dramatized relationship problem and the root of that problem is steady storing things up. Oh what will happen next?

I look forward to seeing what happens next!
