This is evidently based on a music video extolling the senses. I don't know yet if it's just the lyrics of the song (with illustrations), or if it has added materials. I liked the video, but I didn't love it.
This volume includes, in fact, TWO versions of the poem on which the song is based. I've heard the 'evening' version. I liked it better than the 'morning' version. I've always been very fond of the character of Herry Monster. Usually played by the recently deceased Jerry Nelson, he was given to odd comments (once, for example, on addressing an envelope for a card, he commented about New York "It's a great place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit here'). In the 'evening' version of the song he apostrophizes his teddy bear by saying 'Good night, Teddy my bear', which is, in my opinion, the best line of all.
The other poems are, frankly, about third level. I've never seen ANY of them in songs on the show itself.
Now if I could just get a copy of Don Music's rewriting of the Sesame Street theme song!
It looks as if Little Golden Books had a quite fruitful relationship with the Sesame Street people, and especially with the Muppet division, for quite some years.
I think that it truly is wonderful that author David Kort could write poetry based on Sesame Street and orated, coff coff, by your favorite Muppets. Each poem is a celebration, as each Muppet embraces who each is as part of the Sesame Street World. And when they cherish who they are, so can we. Three stars This review brought to you by the letters E and C (my initials, cos I LOVE YOU!)😎
This was a very cute, introductory poetry book. It would be perfect in a preschool classroom. I think children will like reading poetry that some of their favorite characters are "speaking." This book is an oldie but a goodie for sure.
A poetry book based on the Sesame Street characters does not thrill me. Having said that, this was much better than I would have expected.
The poems were more sophisticated than one would think for such a set-up. Themes of wonderful, strange words, mystery, song, embarrassment, imagination, solitude, identity, and wonder are explored. Sure, there are some forced lines to make things work (Cookie Monster speaking me this, me that), but amazingly, this works. I have read far worse children's poetry.
I LOVED this book when I was little. I can still recite some of the poems. To this day I have an obsession with Tiger Lillies because of an illustraion in this book in which Big Bird is holding them.
I think children would really like this since Big bird is on TV. I think that it is cool that he talks about wonderful things are from morning to night. I think this book would be good for 1st or 2nd graders.
I love this book - I have fond memories of my dad reading it to me, in fact if you every start a conversation with him now (some 30 years later) with "it was so embarrassing" he will start reciting the story from this book!
Delightfully queer. It is an odd book of poems that range from a single short verse to a two-page spread, from trite to bizarre, illustrated with familiar characters.
