My Orc-y Breaky Heart

Rate this book
Is my hot orc neighbor my crush or is he actually my soulmate?

My hunky orc neighbor, Vrok, who I'd love to get to know better, keeps ignoring me. But when he overhears me reading the draft of my steamy romance novel out loud, he tells me he has ideas to make the male point of view better.

Yeah, sure.

One thing leads to another, and soon we’re not only working on dialogue, we’re acting out some of the hotter scenes.

Somewhere between Chapter Fifteen and a troll roller coaster ride, we start falling for each other. Then mate bond symbols appear on our wrists.

Now we can’t tell if what we’re feeling is real or not.

If we break the bond, will we still be in love?

My Orc-y Breaky Heart , Book 8 in the Monsterville, USA Series, is a spicy monster romcom. Each book is standalone and best if read in order (see below). Expect romantic hijinks with monsters, heat, and a happily ever after.

AVA ROSS fell for men with unusual features when she first watched Star Wars, where alien creatures have gone mainstream. The writing in this was pretty terrible but the story was OK, really cheesy and cringey, but OK.

Full disclosure, this book lost a full star due to boring monster peen. Firstly because it was not described at all and secondly because IT WAS NOT DESCRIBED AT ALL! Ms. Ross, ma’am, 90% of why we read these is for the creative dick building. Boo on you. Don’t write monster if you aren’t going to meet this basic requirement.

Other than that, this was fated-mates, small monster town, serial trope-soup book. The FMC was a writer of monster smut, so this was beyond meta, like annoyingly meta, but some might find that cute.

Anyway the MMC was way too grumpy and pushed the FMC away the entire book and the FMC was borderline desperate, and threw herself at him at every turn (she mowed his lawn in a bikini to seduce him).

It did have an interesting take on fated mates, where both were unsure of the authenticity of their feelings because of the mate bond, so I appreciated that because that’s how I always feel with these books, and his pet dragon was quite cute. Other than that this was not original and kinda boring.

I’m definitely in the minority but I hated this book. I have loved the first 7 books but I regret finishing this one. I’m keeping it as 0 stars.

The hero absolutely sucked and the heroine was pathetic. And HE didn’t even go after her, SHE still chased after him at the end. WTF??? Have some damn respect for yourself! 😡😡

And Kate’s character….maybe encourage your friend to find someone that treats you like a damn Queen and stop chasing after someone that basically says (over and over and over and over) he doesn’t want to be with you.

Not a single friend of mine would ever encourage me to be with someone that treated me the way this hero treated this heroine…

Sorry, sorry! I know it’s just a book but I hate when women come across so pathetic and desperate for a man.

The only good thing in the story was the pet dragonette! I wish I could have one of those!! 🥰🥰

I will never read this one again. Now, I need to read something else to remove this book from my mind. Sorry, Miss Ross!! 🤷🏽‍♀️

Struggled to finish this one

I have pretty much lived this authors series. They are cute fast reads for me. But this one was very hard for me to finish.

The hero was a whiny baby most of the book which really got on my nerves. And the heroine just kept chasing after him after he kept saying it shouldn’t happen or running away. It was all very blah and eye rolling to me.

After making it to the ending felt like even the author was over writing this story because it felt like it just ended.

Seyla and Vrok
This is a series with cute fun and heartwarming stories. This One is about an author, Seyla and Vrok that works on security. He is heartbroken and is afraid to love again but seyla is very sure She wants him. They have very fun momentos with her reading her book to him and his dragonette is the cutest. Fantastic.

SPOILERS <3

I felt a little off put by this book because to me it just really didn't make sense.
It also felt like an author self insert in a way, especially with the dedication at the end, and I hate those :P
The entire plot and story line revolves around Vrok who was hurt in the past by his ex and has now resigned to close his heart up forever to avoid getting hurt, even if it's with the one person who makes his mating marks appear and with literally every single person in his life telling him that mates are sacred and that he should cherish Seyla.
Instead, he makes her feel worthless time and time again, giving her mixed feelings and ultimately forcing her to comply with his insane idea to break their fated mate bond because that's definitely what is causing his attraction to her and not the fact that he liked her and pursued her before they ever showed up *eye roll*

Every single person in their life is sitting there telling him how sacred, precious, and rare this bond is that they've created, and instead of cherishing it and nurturing it, Vrok is determined to break it just bc his psycho pink loving ex hurt him. It wasn't funny then, it wasn't funny this time, and I just hated half of the book because of the way he continuously hurt Seyla for no reason other than his own fears. If you're that hurt and not over it, don't toy with someone else's feelings.

Anyway, I like the series bc they are easy quick monster loving reads, but this one just felt wrong and I lost so much respect for Vrok in the process.

Lo juro, ha sido el peor. Al protagonista ni quien lo soporte la verdad y la minita esa, debería tener algo de amor propio porque ese wey hizo lo impensable para no estar con ella. Horrible.

💚 “I’m inspired when I’m with you.”
~~~
Seyla is so awesome! She’s kind, sweet and, oh, so feisty. And, her being a romance author, made me love her even more. Even more, she’s such an amazing and supportive friend. I also loved that she never hesitated to go after the things she wanted. I absolutely adored her!
And then, there’s Vrok! The huge green orc might appear growly and grumpy at first, but there’s more to him than meets the eye. Because Vrok is also charming, protective, a bit stubborn and, actually, a really nice guy. I loved him so, so much!
I absolutely loved everything that happened between Seyla and Vrok! From the moment they met (in the previous book), their attraction was undeniable. But, after Vrok’s previous relationship crashed and burned to ashes, he’s now determined to never open his heart again to anyone and he keeps turning Seyla down. Until they discover they’re neighbors and start working together on Seyla’s new book (Ava, I see what you did there!). Oh, I loved those two together! I loved the tension, the constant push and pull, and their chemistry was absolutely fantastic. And when they couldn’t keep their hands off each other, the passionate moments they shared were off-the-charts hot. But their journey towards happiness was not an easy one, especially when their mating marks appeared and neither was sure if their attraction was real or due to the fated mate bond. However, what is meant to be is meant to be, even if you try to fight it. And Seyle and Vrok were so perfect for each other and I couldn’t get enough of them.
In addition, I absolutely loved Merith and Sriracha - Vrok and Seyla’s pets - they were absolutely adorable!
Overall, the story is another spectacular, fun, emotional and spicy addition to the series and I absolutely loved every page of it!
Not my favorite in this series
I was somewhat disappointed in this story, in a series I’ve otherwise thoroughly enjoyed.
The reasons: While I liked both of the main characters, I didn’t like many of their actions. Vrok has been dumped by his fiancé at the wedding planners. The fact that he could have been attracted to such a selfish, controlling, nasty piece of work makes me wonder about his judgment. Something that is proven faulty with the way he treats the lovely, sweet woman who makes it clear she is very attracted to him.
He rejects every advance she makes, even though he is very attracted to her. This makes no sense. Even when he gives into his body’s craving for her, he then rejects her afterward as if she has a communicable disease.
Just as inexplicable to me, as a reader, she not only puts up with this treatment, but keeps trying to seduce him. This woman isn’t written as though she has no pride, when it comes to everything else, so, this seems not only out of character, but sad and pathetic.
No spoilers: This lure/reject behavior goes on for most of the book.
I kept thinking…he’s going to finally get his head out of his butt, but no.
The writing was good, as usual, but their actions and reactions just didn’t make sense to me.
NOTE: This book is meant for mature readers. It includes explicit sex, adult situations, and some blue words some might find offensive.
There is a HEA, as there is in every book in the series.
This review is my personal opinion. Others may disagree, and that’s fine.
I have enjoyed every book I’ve read by this author so far.
However, I doubt I would read this one again.
Vrok, who had his heart broken (or maybe it's just his trust that was broken) by his pink loving former fiancée, is up and his lady love is Seyla, his romance writing next door neighbor who wouldn't mind a little help working through some of the issues in her book. Heh. Yeah. It's not so much working through issues as making sure all the scenes work on an anatomical level, methinks.
Seriously, though. Vrok is heart-wary and he keeps telling himself he's not interested in starting a relationship with anybody. Seyla might intrigue him, but he's not interested. He might have mating bond symbols and all that, BUT STILL. Yeah, the guy is convinced and there's nothing anybody can do to sway him from his course.
That includes Seyla and her naughty scenes for her book. And their naughty times in the kitchen. And their long, smoldering looks. Seyla's all in, basically. But she's also aware that Vrok isn't interested (which is a lie, because the guy is INTERESTED with all caps) and she doesn't want to force anyone into a relationship they don't want to be in. So she agrees to do the unthinkable and break their bond.
YIKES, my friends. Nobody thinks that's a good idea and as black moments go, it's a doozy. Still, these two end up where they need to be despite all the roadblocks they throw up for themselves.
I really really wanted to like this book but I just couldn’t. First of all the fmc continuously fights for the mmc while he rejects her time after time. He’s still nursing a broken heart from his ex that was cruel and kept using that as an excuse to give whiplash to the fmc. AND THEN HE WANTED TO BREAK THEIR MATING BOND!!! Eventually the fmc gave in bc she wanted what he wanted but he never once fought for her. SO THEY GO THROUGH WITH BREAKING THE MATING BOND!! That part had me fuming when he didn’t speak up to stop the ritual. Not once did I feel like the mmc truly loved the fmc. Not even in the end. He never groveled or anything! Even in the end she had to fight for him again. The fmc truly deserved better. And then the mating marks suddenly reappear in the end a month later??? I really disliked the mmc in this book bc he was ridiculous. I had high hopes for this book but I felt nothing but frustration reading it.
Forever Bonded
Vrok got his heqrt broken so every woman he sees at this point is going to break his heart. To fight the attraction, he just shuts down. In comes Seyla. From the moment she steps into his life, he feels, and he feels deep. Seyla wanted Vrok and did everything she could to get Vrok, but she didn't fight for him.
Vrok didn't want to break the bond, and neither did Seyla, so why did they? Cause both of them were too afraid to be honest with themselves and each other. They both knew before the first spell that they didn't want to severe the bond.
Although the story was great, I wasn't very impressed with Vrok. All his actions showed he wanted Seyla, but his words said differently. I have to give it to Seyla, she knew how to get to Vrok...using her writings to get his attention was genius.
Ava, the way you weave a story is genius!!!!!
HEA
Standalone, interconnected characters
Paranormal, Insta-love
Monsterville, USA series Book 8
Trigger/Content warnings
Spell casting
Side character shows signs of DV
Vrok (mmc, monster)
Seyla (mfc, human)
Seyla has crushed on Vrok for a little over a month. He's been trying to avoid her, protecting his already broken heart from more damage. One day, he hears her reading the book she is writing, out-loud. He ends up offering to help her with the male's PoV. That leads to acting out scenes. When the mating tattoos show up, he thinks everything he's feeling is just from that bond and doesn't trust it. She wants to trust in the bond but doesn't want to force feelings on him. They go so far as to locate someone who can cast a spell to break the bond. Will they go through with it? Will it work?
This book is part of a series of interconnected standalones. It can be read on its own, but because most previous characters reappear in future books, I recommend you read them in order: they're worth it!
I loved Vrok and Seyla! They're so perfect together, even Fate agrees! It was hard seeing them convinced they were doing what the other wanted... and I loved that Seyla is a monster romance author! It was so cute how she and Vrok reenacted scenes of A Monster Worth Fighting For. And I adore Sriracha and Merith!
Also, I can't wait for Venom's book: he intrigues me so much!
As you can guess, I 100% recommend this book and the whole series to fans of monster romance! They're relatively quick reads, and so satisfying! Monsterville is a great place to get lost in...
I enjoyed this and all the other Monsterville, USA and tied-in monster books by Ava Ross. Well worth reading.
I really wanted to post this review because Ms. Ross didn't do what a lot of authors seem to do and that is have an author as a main character writing a book and then we don't get to read that book we were teased with. In 'My Orc-y Breaky Heart' Seyla, a paranormal romance author is writing a wyvern/human romance and uses her 'need to try out scenes' to entice her neighbor, Vroc, into getting to know her. The book Seyla is writing is actually a delightful book Ava Ross wrote for the 2nd season of the multi-author Monster Between the Sheets series named A Monster Worth Fighting For.
This book killed me! It had every emotion - happiness, humor, sadness, despair, and back to happiness. I used up a lot of tissues! It totally wrecked me even though I knew it would all get resolved in the end! This couple had one of the most angst-filled journeys I’ve ever seen in an Ava Ross book, but it made that happily ever after sweeter! I loved Vrok’s dragonette Merith! Who wouldn’t love a little smart dragon buddy? Seyla was a wonderfully fun heroine who deserved to have unconditional love. Vrok was gun-shy when it came to love, and I wanted to smack him many times! Thankfully, they both figured things out by the end! Looking forward to the next book in this series!
*sigh* I love Seyla. She has the purest, sweetest heart of any MFC ever. She deserves a HEA so much. Then there's Vrok. I wanted to smack him upside the head almost as much as I wanted to hug him and tell him it would be alright. He's been badly hurt in the past so I got why he was such a fool but I still wanted to smack him. I was so involved and invested in the story that I got teary at a certain point (not saying what). Ava Ross writes amazing love stories peopled with friends that I just haven't met yet. She is a 1-click guarantee for me...if I 1-click I'm guaranteed a great read. Loved it!
This story really pulled at my emotions. I was happy, hopeful, so sad, happy and that continues until the last page. Even though Vrok is an Orc, his character is so realistic. He was badly hurt in the recent past so he kept pushing Seyla away. Seyla is a romance writer and she's been crushing on Vrok for a long time. So she asks his advice on some scenes she is writing. What could go wrong?
Ava is a storyteller, a very good one. Her books always draw me into the scenes where I can experience what the characters see and do. And she writes the best HEA for her characters.
OMG! I loved the steam in this book! Seyla was fascinated with Vrok but he acted like he didn't even see her. Secretly, Vrok was digging on his next-door neighbor but was reluctant to take the first step. He had been horribly deceived by his ex-fiance and didn't really trust women anymore. But Seyla went after her Orc by asking him to help her with her latest book. It was so steamy and funny at the same time as they both fought the bond that formed against them. Neither wanted to admit how much they wanted each other and almost ruined everything. I loved it!
I didn’t like this as much as the other ones. I thought their reason to be apart and break all of that was pretty stupid. I can understand that he doubts if his feelings are real or if it’s the bond, but she liked him loooong befor the bond, why is she doubting her feeling? Why is breaking it their first solution instead of talking and getting to know each other? I thought because the biggest part about the book was either sexual or about breaking the bond and staying away from each other, they didn’t really got to know each other and had no real Charakter developement
Ava Ross is a master storyteller! What an emotional read…I could not put it down! I fell in love with the characters and so much so that I started to check out when the next book will be published (Brooke and Nyxor …I can’t wait!). We met Vrok in a previous book and I’m so glad to read his story. His dragonette Merith just adds to the delight of this read. Tens stars of awesome reading here…download and enjoy.❤️
This is the 8th book of the Monsterville U.S.A series. This book features Seyla, a romance author and Vrok, her neighbor. Their attraction and chemistry are undeniable from the beginning. After letting go of past hurts, their relationship develops into a passionate steamy one.
Ava Ross did an excellent job writing this book. It was emotional, heartwarming, and enjoyable read. I highly recommend this book and the other books in this series.
I liked the beginning. It was so cute, Seyla teasing Vrok and he responding in his own way. I remember Vrok from the previous story and I remembered pink, lots of it. 😂. But then the story took a dive, our orc is breaking not just his own but that of Seyla's heart too. It made me sad and asked will our MCs have their hea after doing a foolish act? Thankfully, they do have a hea. It just proves that bond or no bond, love is much more powerful than any spell.
This was another heartwarming and cute addition to the series and I absolutely loved how Seyla, a romance author, and Vrok, an orc, had their romance come together. Imagine overhearing someone reading spicy scenes in a book they're writing and then having the nerve to offer improvements....and then act them out with said author. Lol! This story was fun, had lots of emotions and wonderful characters. I'm loving this engaging series and hope the books keep coming ;D
a little annoying
I’ve got to be real and say that this book was a little annoying. I really just wanted to whack these two in the back of the head. I don’t understand why they insisted fighting their fated mate status so hard as to take the steps they did. Why would you question if it was real, if it was fated. Just irritated me. Otherwise the story was written well. I love this series still.
fast read and great monster romance
I loved the characters and wanted them to be together. But I got why they doubted their feelings because of the mate bond. Their struggle against the bond really added a cool dimension to the romance. I wanted to know if it was real but worried about what breaking the mate bond might do to them. It was a fast read and had a very satisfying ending!
I love the monsterville series as there is such a diversity in it. I do love my Orcs though and sorry but Gunner is still my favourite (Orc Me Baby). Vrok, bless him, is rather a sensitive soul. I think most people consider Orcs to be tougher and less emotional which has possibly gone against him in this one. Seyla is great. She is kind and has chosen to go after what she wants. I do wish that they could sort themselves out sooner though but then, in real life, people don't always either.
Not All Breaky
Broke and Seyla are fated mates, but Vrok doesn’t want to be forced by some arbitrarily imposed bond. Even if he finds her attractive and good company. Seyla has been crushing on Vrok hard but she doesn’t want to impose herself on him if he really doesn’t want her. These two lead quite a meandering path in their stubbornness. Lots of chemistry in this one, a little head banging on the reader’s part, at least on mine, as these two try to figure it out.
