Winnie the Witch lives in an all-black house with a black cat. They have a problem.

I read this in Spanish. It would be good for someone learning the language because (unlike a surprising number of picture books) the illustrations reflect pretty directly what is being narrated in the text. I assume it would also be a good learning-to-read book in English.

Winnie the Witch is the first book of the Winnie the Witch series by Valerie Thomas, with the oddish and fun illustrations of Korky Paul.

It is my favorite from the series. Brilliant! Original, lovely story with amazing illustrations.

Highly recommended. 5 stars!

Winnie the Witch is a lovely, clumsy, good-natured, wild witch, who tries her best to get her spells right, but usually has to make all possible mistakes first, before getting it right in the end. And what is right is usually different from what she envisioned in the beginning.

I can't recall how often I have read the Winnie books, both the picture books and the chapter books spin offs. This is the first one, and Winnie has a mission!

She lives in a Black House, and everything in it is black, even her cat Wilbur - which poses the initial problem. Clumsy Winnie can't see him in the surroundings, so she trips over him all the time.

Calls for magic, and she waves her wand: "ABRACADABRA!"

Problem solved, new problem ahead. A green Wilbur was good inside the Black House, but in the garden, he is as accident-prone as ever. A rainbow-coloured Wilbur solves Winnie's problem, but makes the cat unhappy. What to do?

Finally, Winnie knows: Wilbur stays the way he has always been, but her Black House changes! What a colourful solution to a tricky problem.

Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys witty humour, wild witches, reading aloud to Primary School kids, or meditating on neologisms. For there are quite a few of them in Winnie's world. In the library, the students used to yell out "Winnie-word", whenever we came across another one.

Cute book about a witch who lives in an all black home and has a black cat who she sometimes has a hard time seeing (since everything is black). A short journey as she works to fix the problem. Most cute and amusing!
The art is playful and actually has a surprising amount of detail to it. You can tell a good deal of time was put into the pictures which is something I always appreciate in a good children's book.
This is the first book about Winnie. We will continue looking to add the others to our family's book collection.

Winnie the Witch finds herself continually tripping over her black cat Wilbur in this humorous and endearing tale from Australian children's author Valerie Thomas. With a black house filled with black furnishings - even the bathtub is black! - it's not difficult to see why. After one mishap too many, Winnie reaches for her wand, turning Wilbur a bright green! But when this too proves problematic, and she turns him into a multi-colored cat, she ends up with one distressed feline on her hands. Is there a solution that will make Wilbur more visible, without making him unhappy...?

I really enjoyed this witchy tale (thanks, Kathryn!), which strikes me as an ideal Halloween picture-book for those young readers who scare easily, and need a gentler type of story. The solution to Winnie and Wilbur's problem is very satisfying, and the process whereby they reach it, quite amusing. British illustrator Korky Paul has created a delightful visual interpretation of Winnie's house, with many appealing details. I loved the little gremlin-type creatures that can be seen in the background of many of these pictures! As someone who grew up loving the tales of Dorrie the Little Witch , I suspect I would have taken Winnie and Wilbur to heart, as a young girl.

Winnie the Witch and her large black cat, Wilbur, live in a house that is entirely black. The curtains are black and all the furniture, bedding and even the bath tub. Wilbur has bright green eyes so everything is fine when he is awake but when he is asleep, Winnie can't see him. This causes Winnie to have all sorts of accidents tripping over poor, snoozing Wilbur. After one particularly disastrous accident, Winnie decides to remedy the situation by turning Wilbur bright green. That creates a new set of problems so she changes him to multicoloured. Poor Wilbur! He is most unhappy with his new colours. How can Winnie make Wilbur more visable without making him desperately unhappy?

So cute!!! My affection is fueled, no doubt, by my empathy in sharing a home with a black cat and nearly sitting/tripping on/losing said cat around the house in the dark. In this case, however, Winnie's black cat is so well disguised at any time of day because her house is completely BLACK! She tries a number of different spells to turn poor kitty various shades that will help him stand out before she finally comes to a beautiful conclusion. A charming story with delightful illustrations sure to charm cat lovers and those seeking a cozy Halloween read.

Enchanting! A witch that isn’t scary at all, one who loves her cat Wilbur so much that his welfare is her uppermost concern. I really liked Winnie and Wilbur.

The illustrations are wonderful. I especially enjoyed the details of the house, inside and outside, on the last page, but every picture in the book was wonderful.

This book is very sweet and it’s very funny too. I loved the whole story, especially the conclusion.

There are sequels. Do I dare try them out? Probably; this one was so adorable.

Black was Winnie the Witch's favourite colour; her house. inside and outside, her carpets, her chairs, her bed, including sheets and blankets, and her bath were all black. And her cat was also black so it was no surprise when trouble developed.

When Wilbur's green eyes were open, Winnie could see him but when he closed his eyes he simply merged into the background. Winnie sat on him when he was on a chair, fell over him when he was asleep on the carpet and tumbled down the stairs when she fell over him when he was asleep at the top.

So Winnie decided to change things and with a wave of her magic wand and screaming the word abracadabra, she changed Wilbur's colour to green. No problem when Wilbur was in the house, Winnie could see him but once outside on the grass she lost him ... even when his eyes were wide open! Not surprisingly she tripped over him, turned three somersaults and fell into a rose bush!

That was enough, Winnie was furious so she waved her magic wand five times and ABRACADABRA, Wilbur had a red head, a yellow body, a pink tail, blue whiskers and four purple legs ... but his eyes remained green. Winnie could see him everywhere, even when he was at the top of a tree where the birds all laughed at him.

Wilbur was miserable and stayed up the tree all night. Winnie was unhappy at this as she did not like seeing Wilbur miserable so she once again waved her magic wand and said the magic word and Wilbur was a black cat once more.

There was only one solution from there on and Winnie took it, she waved her magic wand again and perhaps you can imagine what she did ... if not and you wish to know, the answer is six lines down this page (don't go there if you want the thrill of the book!)

... she turned the house into a colourful one so Wilbur could always be seen!

Who doesn’t like reading books about magic and witches? Especially if they describe adventures of the adored Winnie the Witch and her cat Wilbur.

This time Winnie finds it hard to see her black cat in her black house, with black chairs, black carpets, a black bed and even a black bath. Wilbur’s green eyes can help, but not when they are closed. She sits on him and she trips over him. Winnie the Witch uses her magic power and makes her cat bright green, but it is not a perfect solution especially when Wilbur sits in the grass. Through waving her wand five times she makes Wilbur a five-coloured cat, what does not make him happy and obviously she hates when he is miserable. She finds another solution which allows her to keep Wilbur black.

The first picture book in the brilliant series about Winnie is a wonderful read for children in Reception and KS1 classes. It is perfect to read aloud and it is easy to involve children when casting the spell “Abracadabra”. Marvellous and very detailed pictures by an award - winning illustrator Korky Paul make this book worth exploring time and again. Children can enjoy both discovering various aspects of the illustrations as well as listening to this funny and engaging story. Highly recommended.

There is a range of Winnie and Wilbur books, this is my favourite. Winnie's house is all black and so is Wilbur. Winnie keeps losing and stepping on Wilbur so she's uses her magical wand to turn him green, then multicoloured. Wilbur doesn't like to be all these different colours, so in the end she uses her magic wand to turn her house multicoloured and Wilbur back to black.

Very fun story. Introduces the concept of camouflage.

As an owner of a black cat I can confirm that it is indeed difficult to locate the cat during the night and that it would be preferable to have it glow in a flourescent light to avoid stepping or sitting on it. This first instalment in the series is good, but I don't think it is sufficiently effective at showcasing the personality of the two characters and making you want to read more.
