Demon crypts. Vampire lairs. Glowing angels. Sexy sirens. The stuff of fiction.
Or so Winn Thomas always thought.
Since being accepted into the fold of the supernatural, he knows better. None of what he imagined is true, but everything he feared is, and binding himself to his Changeling girlfriend until her nineteenth birthday will give him an education far beyond what he’d get at his human high school.
Luckily, Winn’s not giving up, he won’t back down, and he definitely isn’t going to run away with his tail between his legs. After all, only werewolves have tails. Right?
In this, the second of the 19th Year trilogy, Winn’s facing the challenge of one lifetime. If he doesn’t learn the truth about mythological creatures, his girlfriend Mac Thorne won’t either. That means, in six months, when she chooses her final form, she won’t know what to pick.
Winn, though, has his own ideas about Mac’s final selection—plans she knows nothing of.
Emi Gayle just wants to be young again. She lives vicariously through her youthful characters, while simultaneously acting as chief-Mom to her teenaged son and searching for a way to keep her two daughters from ever reaching the dreaded teen years.
Ironically, those years were some of Emi's favorite times. She met the man of her dreams at 14, was engaged to him at 19, married him at 20 and she's still in love with him to this day. She'll never forget what it was like to fall in love at such a young age — emotions she wants everyone to feel.
I fell in book-love with Winn in book #1 of The 19th Year, After Dark, so when I got my hands on this 2nd installment I was dork dancin' like a pro. Think about it - how many series in a paranormal switch character PoV's with each book?
This is the first to do so - that I've read - and oh am I ever glad Ms. Gayle went this route!!
Winn is the type of boyfriend we all wish we'd had back in high school - loyal, compassionate, kind, respectful - the kind you looked forward to taking home to meet Pop.
The supporting cast is endearing & frustrating all at once, a variety of humans, gods, and mythological creatures that keep the reader on their toes. This book has it all. Angels, demons, griffins, vampires, dragons, but they have their place & mesh in a way I've never seen done before. A council of 12 such creatures act as a ... senate, I guess you could say, representing their kind and ruling, but without one single leader. The relationships between them is sometimes full of tension, and oftentimes snicker worthy.
Yuckies:
Ok. This isn't REALLY a yucky, but here goes.
While a lot of answers are given in DA, quite a few - the most important ones - are still a mystery. Le sigh. I understand the need for cliff hangers of this sort (I'm guilty of them myself!!!!!) but I HATE waiting for conclusions!
Ms. Gayle's voice & story telling expertise will leave you growling for the 3rd and final installment of this as well - what I consider one of the best YA paranormal series to date.
See. Not really yucky at all. ;)
Recommend:
To YA lovers & occasional readers - to NON YA lovers as well - yes. These books are enticing. Easy to relate to even though they're full of mythological creatures, funny, and endearing.
Really, that's how it ends???? REALLY EMI!!!!! COME ON! ugh, how long do I have to wait for the next book. I'm gonna pull my hair out! LOL! Yup that was my initial reaction. But I wasn't disappointed with it. No I wasn't, not one bit. I am IN LOVE with this series. It's different, it's amazing, and you NEED to read it!
I want to thank J. Taylor Publishing for providing me with a copy of this book to read for an honest review. I was happily chosen to participate on this blog tour, as well, and that just made me happy with so much glee! Receiving this book for free has in no way influenced my opinion or review.

Ok, so first of all, I loved the first book in this series. I mean LOVED it. I could not put it down. Given the chance to read the second one early, well, you know I jumped at it. I also had the privilege of helping with the cover reveal of this one. And this made me super excited because I LOVE Winn. I mean, I want him for my boyfriend, BAD! So to have him on the cover, *SWOONS*! The cover made me want to jump right into the book just so I could throw myself at him! Sad? Hmmm...I'm sure many of you wouldn't think so if you got to know him!
Winn: kind, caring, loving, smart, nerdy, amazing...I could go on and on all day long about him. He's such a great character. And he grows on you so much. You want to just be right there with him to hold him and be a part of his life. And even when Mac tries to push him away, he has none of it. He loves her and he wants to be with her, for as long as he can, no matter what. So his agreement to teach her is no surprise, although I can't imagine he doesn't realize it's no easy task. She's so stubborn and really refuses to ask all the right questions. And it's so great to see things from his perspective (the human perspective that Mac could not really provide us with in the first book). The supporting cast is great. I love all their differing points of view. I love that they are willing to talk with Winn ,despite him being human. And they answer his questions, for the most part, even if they do run around the bush just a bit. But he's not dumb, no no surely he's not. He knows exactly where they are headed. He knows he cannot tell Mac what she needs to know unless she asks the questions, but she avoids it like the plague. Despite this being frustrating (as are the supporting characters for the most part) I still wanted to just keep reading about anything and everything they had to say! Most importantly, the characters are completely likable, even those you really want to hate. they serve their purpose so well. I can say that Mac was super frustrating in this story, tho. Seeing her through Winn's eyes really made me want to throttle her at times. But he loves her so much, I just can't hate her. And I so love their connection: outcast and geeky, nerdy, gorgeous guy! What's not to love.
And there is no telling where the story will go. Gayle keeps you guessing. I love that. I don't want to know. I want to be surprised. I want to be left to WANT to know the characters. And Gayle does this! It's just one big mystery after another, so intriguing, fascinating, really. Twists and turns that keep you guessing at every point. Boo ya to Gayle!
And let's talk about Gayle's writing. Oh gosh is it good. I love how she has them talking, has them pull you write into the story. And her descriptions are phenomenal. I could kill her for leaving me with a cliff hanger! Especially with having to really wait so long for the next book. But her writing is so great I just can't hate her, I can only love her for bringing more of this story to me. The world building she does in this book is really great. It builds on all the histories that we got a glimpse of in the first book and shows us the depth of each paranormal being.
I will say I had a hard time choosing a rating for this book. I loved the first book so much, especially the story. I loved the story in the first book more than this one. BUT, I loved Winn's point of view so I just can't help but feeling torn in this book. But since I gave the first book 5 stars, and I really did love this, it came out in just the same spot. Really, I don't think anyone should miss this series. It's so different and amazing. Come on, dive into Mac and Winn's story. You won't be disappointed!
Day After is full of mystery and intrigue and excitement, and I pretty much enjoyed this book from start to finish. As always with Emi's writing, the plot is as intricately revealed as it woven, leaving the reader constantly guessing and anticipating, and very often surprised. The slow reveal of revelation after revelation as each and every discovery is made is a strong motivator for the reader to keep turning the pages. But an even bigger motivator than that is the MC. Winn. *sigh* Winnford Thomas, how I adore thou, geeky dude that thee are. Winn won me over (ha! no pun intended) in After Dark, so I was very much looking forward to reading into his somewhat convoluted (he's a guy, after all) mind and finding out just how the other half of Mac and Winn views their somewhat unusual relationship. Sure, to begin, his voice took a little getting into--I blame that on the great connection I felt from Mac in the first book--but it wasn't long before I'd slid into the nerdy mind of Winn, and was very soon happy to be taken along on his ride (you can stop those filthy thoughts of yours; I didn't mean it like that). As I expected him to be, he was intelligent and patient and caring and passionate and ... just Winn. In case you hadn't figured it out, I kinda like Winn. ;) Plus we have Mac--through Winn's eyes. She was slightly more frustrating a character in Day After than she was in After Dark, but I imagine that's because we got a much stronger smack upside the head of just how her actions and decisions affected Winn on a personal and emotional level--and thanks to that connection I mentioned, they can be tough to endure through his eyes. But I still love Mac, because deep down I suspected she had her own solid reasoning for doing what she did--after all, she does really consider her actions even if she doesn't realise she's doing it at the time. I'm not going to delve too much into the plot, because it's quite complex, so the best thing to do is to just read it for yourself. But just know, you will get some answers you've been hoping for, at the same time as landing with a few new ones; you will experience a couple WTF!? moments when some 'stuff' comes to light or characters behave in a certain way; you will definitely want to do a little bit of neck throttling; and you will adore Winn. So just read it anyway. ;o) That is all.
Though I can't technically give this 6 stars.... just know, in my heart, I did.
You know those books, the ones where you after you finish you want to start all over, because the're that good and you just don't want it to be over??? That's how I feel about Day After. This book is so crazy good that I hardly know where to begin in my review..... so how to start? ..... well, I gave it six stars, an honor reserved for my very favorite of books.
Day After is written from Winn's point of view, a change up from book 1, After Dark, which is told by Mac. I loved the change of perspectives from one book to another. It gives a nice peek into each character while keeping the mystery quotient up by not flip flopping back and forth between character perspectives within one book. And the mystery quotient in this book is huge. There's so many twists and turns to this plot! I had a constant inner monologue going of "Geez! I so didn't see that coming?" and "What?!?!? No freakin' way!" There were tons of surprises throughout this book.
I also really appreciate the creativity that goes into a work such as 19th Year series. The world that has been built within is overflowing with unique supernatural characters taken from mythology world-wide. Day After gives us so much more insight to these characters. It's just so fun!!!
Now if you've read some of my other reviews, you'll know that I'm also a huge fan of character growth. And again Emi Gayle hits the nail on the head with that here. Winn's growth is subtle and nicely done. Mac, even as we view her through Winn's eyes, sheds a bit of her rebellious and selfish ways. Even the adult characters show growth. **happy sigh**
Everything about Day After is a complete perfection in my eyes. I just soooooo love this book!!! Now I will warn you it's a pretty big cliff hanger we're left with at the end, but it's not the type that leaves you feeling irritated and incomplete; there's enough closure there to be pleased with the ending, but the end does leave you craving your next does of the 19th Year!!!
I did receive a free copy of this book in exchange for an an honest review. See more of my reviews on my blogspot blog, Known to Read.
When I saw that this book was going to be in Winn's POV, I was beyond excited. I loved Winn in the first book, and was really looking forward to seeing things from his perspective and get in his mind some more. However, I will admit that I was slightly worried. When some authors switch over POV's completely from one character to another, it just doesn't work, but Ms. Gayle delivered in every way imaginable! I fell in love with Winn a little bit more (okay...a whole lot more) throughout this book. He was unbelievably loyal, hilarious, and just plain cute. He is exactly the type of boyfriend a girl wants and deserves. The lengths he went to in order to find out the information for Mac and himself was astounding, and Ms. Gayle's creativity truly shines in this novel.
Mac is still awesome as ever, but I was a little upset at her for pushing Winn away. Nevertheless, I understood why she did what she did, and everything works out in the end, for the most part ;) Suze had my laughing so hard in this novel. I didn't think that our favorite demon could be any funnier, but Ms. Gayle proved me wrong. Every single scene with him had me busting, from his interesting choices in wardrobe to his witty comments. I also enjoyed learning more out the 12 Council members. The one thing I pride Ms. Gayle on is her amazing ability to incorporate so many different mythological creatures, and not have the story become confusing or boring. It is just the opposite! I loved delving deeper into the mythology and the world that Mac and Winn live in.
The story never sees a dull moment. The story flows very nicely, and is heart-pounding, hilarious, and in parts, heartbreaking. I can't wait to see how everything plays out in the next book, and will definitely be pre-ordering it! I highly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a new, unique story that will leave you clamoring for the next in the series.
The very first thing that I did after finishing Day After was go in search of the release date of book three in the series, Darkest Day. And what do I find? October... OCTOBER!!! Seriously? I really need to wait until october!!! Boy oh boy!!! Why did Day After have to end like that!!
"You've been asked by our current changeling, Miss Maya Mackenzie Thorne, to be her teacher. Have you willingly agreed to take on this duty?"
"Yes. I have accepted. Willingly."
I immediately fell in love with the characters and the world that Emi Gayle created in book one, After Dark, so I Jumped at the chance to read book two, Day After when it was offered to me. And to add to my excitement was the fact that it was going to be written from Winn's point of view. I actually put off reading it for a little while because I knew that I would be devouring it in one sitting and then would have the long wait for the next book in front of me.
Like no other girl in school, Mac Thorne had pricked my finger and made me bleed. Only the bleeding hadn't stopped.
In Day After Winn is on a mission to learn all that he can about Mac's world and guide her in the decision of her final choice of what form she will take as we move toward her19th birthday. Winn was just as amazing as ever. He is loyal, loving, kind, nerdy and sweet. He is one pretty perfect package. I loved the way he tackled his mission and jumped right in and overcame his fears to try to learn everything that he needed to help Mac. I loved the little bits of inner dialogue that he had with himself and that just made me love him more.
Stubborn didn't begin to describe Mac Thorne.
Mac had such a knack for frustrating me. She was just so stubborn at times. And I think I felt that so deeply because we got to see that through Winn's eyes and really got to feel the impact and effect that her decisions had on him. But as stubborn and frustrating as I found her, I also loved her. I completely understood her struggles with the expectations that are placed on her shoulders and her desires coming through in some of the decisions that she made. And towards the end of the book she completely had me in her corner rooting for her. I really felt that she went through so much growth in this book.
Another character that I love was Suze. He is just so amazingly hilarious and cool. He just added so much to the book with his humour and sass. He was hilarious and I found myself having a good laugh at something he did or said on more than one occasion.
Emi Gayle did an awesome job in creating these characters that all fit together and all have a part to play. There are twists and turns when you least expect them and at times there is quite a lot of information to take in, but it all adds to the story development and moves the story along at a steady pace.
So now, I have to brace myself for the wait. Hurry up October!! I need to know what happens next!!!
Rarely when SHE is the one with special powers in a relationship, and HE is a mere mortal. I was curious (yeah, I had to skip the first volume, but rest assured that at the first free moment I’ll fix this) to see how the author will solved the genetic male vanity. Probably it’s manifested also by Winn’s desire for Mac to choose humanity.
I warn you that you will find below the word "secret" frequently repeated. That's not because of my lack of inspiration, but because "secret / mystery / enigma / hidden / unavowed / mask / disguise" is the core of the story. Discovered or not they direct and impose every movement of the characters, and the story revolve around them.
Choosing to teach Mac about hers kind proves to be more difficult than Winn imagined. More difficult not necessarily for the fact that first he need to find the main information for himself and for that he must meet those who wanted (or still do) to kill him, but because he has to learn Mac without sharing these information with her. But surely he would have found a way to fulfill his task, if in all this gathering of information it would not be found and take place more or less strange facts. Facts that will lead to danger, kidnapping and eventually to a suddenly death.
The plot is sinuous and constantly changing its direction with every secret revealed. And these mysteries come to light where and how you least expect. Nothing and no one seems to be reliable anymore, none of what you thought you knew was for sure seems to be applicable even in the case of the Winn himself. Control or free will? Regardless if is about the main characters or secondary ones, the revealed secrets and new information received (in fact just bits of them) it will make Winn and the reader also to want to find out more and more. Any unknown resolved lead to even larger ones. Winn certainly needs all his skills (did I forgot to tell you that he is the ideal man?) to find the well hidden truth and to discern the real interests.
Dangers lurk, tension accrues and the attacks are increasing. The worse is that Winn knows that his help for Mac to take a decision it will be most likely equal with him to be forsaken. Does what they find out will may give them a chance to be together?
But nothing compares with the end! The author takes the Council’s side and leaves us to squirm into the unknown awaiting the next volume. That's because nothing is decided, and the discoveries made so far can change everything. Or not.
With an alert action, a fantasy world rich in universal mythological characters, with well dosed and placed humor, Day After will be a very pleasant reading that will surely win many fans.
I love it!
«"What will you do when Mackenzie can no longer accept you in her life"? I'd thought about that one a lot, too, "I'll say... goodbye." "It won't be that easy." "Nothing ever is when it comes to Mac."»
'Day After' is the second book in a fantastic young adult paranormal romance series that switches gears to follow the new main character Winn Thomas as he deals with his newfound knowledge of the supernatural world that simmers below the human realm. Alongside his girlfriend, Mac, Winn must learn all he can about mythological creatures so Mac can decide on her final form in six months. If Winn doesn't learn about them, Mac won't either, and she won't be able to make a decision. Winn has a secret card up his sleeve about Mac's final form - one that even she doesn't know about yet. He plans on having her choose a human final form, whether it's possible or not. Will he be able to convince her in time?
This is a fun and unique second book that continues to prove to be an addicting paranormal series. The character of Mac is witty, sarcastic, and very accessible to the reader. She's realistic and believable, which makes it easy to side with her throughout the novel. I really enjoyed the backstory and details of the Changelings and the other paranormal beings, as well as their culture and politics. It gave an intriguing depth to the book that definitely sets it apart from others in the genre. Winn is the narrator in this installment, which makes things interesting - seeing the supernatural world through his eyes and mind gives fresh insight into the world the author has built and the other characters in the series - including Mac. The plot itself was very well written with a great flow and a fast pace. I got sucked into the story on the first page and didn't stop reading until I was finished. There's something for everyone in this book - paranormal, action, mystery, adventure, and romance. Overall, this second installment proves that this series is one that I highly recommend and one that you won't want to miss!
Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Emi Gayle has truly created something unique in YA paranormal. Not only is the story engaging, action packed and filled with all sort of things that go bump in the night, but it is also chocked full of awesome characters that are completely memorable.
I fell in love with Mac's hardness and nonchalant attitude in the first installment but I fell even more in love with Winn, his abilities to forgive, his book smarts and his down right hotness and loyalty to Mac, even when she pushed him away. So you can imagine how excited I was when I found out that this installment would be told from Winn's point of view. I was thrilled that the author gave us this in depth look into his thoughts and feelings not only about Mac but about the supernatural world as well and his new role in it.
Mac couldn't have picked a more trusting, caring, dedicated, loyal friend and teacher to help her along the way.
As we learn more about Winn's role as Mac's teacher, Mac herself, her background and the supernatural beings on the Council we are once again reminded why we love this series and the diverse group that inhabit it.
I loved how things all unfolded as Mac and Winn get closer and closer to Mac's 19th year. So much is revealed and while a lot of questions are answered those answers inevitably lead to new more interesting and sometimes puzzling questions.
The Council continues to hide facts and truths (as well as untruths) around every cryptic message and once again you have to question whom the good guys are and who are the ones that want to see Mac fail.
This was brilliantly done and makes me anxious to know how it will all come to a conclusion in the last book. It will be bittersweet to see this trilogy come to an end.
Day After is the sequel to After Dark. This time around we get an in-depth look at Winn Thomas who has taken it upon himself to become MacKenzie's teacher so that she can make a informed choice of what she want's to be when she turns 19. Winn is a really interesting and amazing character who goes through great lengths in order to help MacKenzie so that she has a firm understanding of what she is choosing, even though he clearly wants her to choose to become Human so that he can stay with her. There are still a few secrets and obstacles standing in his way, including the fate of the 12 supernatural council members who are split on how to handle humans, and what role Mac will end up playing when all is said and done.
I absolutely loved meeting Mac's mom Maya in the In-Between, as well as learning a thing or two about Win's adopted sister Zoe who has the ability to talk to the dead. I also loved Alina and Suze the only real supernatural that take a shining and liking towards Winn. Suze will definitely make you laugh more times than not. It was nice to see more of an interaction with Winn and his closest friends as well. At times, certain stories get caught up in the supernatural nuisances and leave the human world behind.
I can't wait to get my hands on Darkest Day the final book in this trilogy since Gayle leaves us with a bunch of unanswered questions not the least of which is what will Winn's role be when all is said and done? Will Mac make the right choice or will she leave Win behind? Will Mac's mom play a key role in what happens next?
Recv from JTP on 01/28/2013* Expected publication: May 6th 2013 by J. Taylor Publishing
"We're resilient. Time heals all wounds, and it will heal this, too.
I had one hope, that Day After would make a series, that I had been looking forward to for nine year, less underwhelming. Unfortunately, I'm still disappointed.
★ I had two types of feelings towards the characters: indifference and annoyance. I did not like any of the characters nor did I care about them.
★ The world in Day After has a lot of potential. I love urban fantasy and books that deal with supernatural creatures living in the human world, but these topics are dealt with on a surface level only.
★ I couldn't follow the logic of events that occurred in Day After and I don't understand why things happened the way they did. I admit that this could be a 'me' issue though. I understand that Mac has to choose which supernatural creature she'll become on the council, but I don't understand the lies, the lack of information, the riddles and the tests if Mac is going to end up on the council anyways. The lack of communication and straight-forwardness is so frustrating.
★ The progression of conversation and the humourous moments feels unnatural and forced. Also, most of the information that we get in Day After comes from info-dumping during conversation.
I'm struggling to think of aspects that I enjoyed in Day After. My one last hope for The 19th Year series: Darkest Daywill be a more enjoyable read.
Winford Thomas' life was about to change in ways he never dreamed possible. His girlfriend, Mackenzie, is non-human and she's chosen Winn to be her teacher. Neither of them realizes just what that will encompass when they agree to take the path together. Before Winn can begin to teach Mac what she needs to know about her kind, he'll have to be approved by the Council of 12. Seems easy enough, until he meets them. Mac must choose which form she will take by age 19 and she will begin ruling one of the factions then. While Winn tries to unravel the mystery that is her kind, they will both learn things about their lives they couldn't have guessed. Winn has six months to teach Mac all she needs to know.
Superbly written with characters of depth, this book is one YA you'll want to read. It's fascinating and mysterious. You'll find yourself just as surprised as the characters as things begin to unfold. Emi Gayle gives us a wonderful book in Day After. I recommend this as a stand alone book or as you can see from the cover, it's book two of the 19th year trilogy. Seldom do you find a series where the books can stand alone and be terrific in their own right. Get this series. You'll love it.
I found no issues in this one.
I gave this one 5 cheers out of 5 because I was swept along at a wonderful pace with this book. ~Copy of book provided by author in exchange for a fair review~
The Day after is the second book in this Paranormal Romance Series for Young Adults. While this is book 2 of the series you can read this without reading book 1. Of course I do recommend reading book one before book 2.
The story itself is very fast paced. It moves along as quickly as you can turn those pages! And trust me you will be turning the pages quite rapidly to find out what happens next.
Winn Thomas is a wonderful character, and in this book we follow him as he deals with his knowledge of the supernatural world he has been brought into. I personally adored his girlfriend Mac. I will not go into any details on what the issues are because I truly hate spoilers. But they are quite an interesting mix of issues that Mac and Winn need to deal with.
Now I will warn you that book 3 in the series does not come out until October. Yes I know I hate waiting as much as you do! I am seriously NOT known for my patience. But I will recommend you reading book one and two and then of course if you liked them as much as I did then go out and grab book 3 when it comes out in October.
I will give one more book warning, you WILL be on an emotional rollercoaster ride with this series. And you will most likely (if you're anything like me) start yelling at the book or gasping out loud!
Details/Disclaimer: Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Winn Thomas strives to do the impossible in Emi Gayle’s Day After.
Unlike After Dark, Day After follows Winn’s point of view. Winn is such a great character, and Gayle does well in writing from a male point of view. I felt his frustration with the tasks given to him as well as his heartache when it comes to his girlfriend, Mac. Mac is up to her old stubborn tricks, and she put Winn through the wringer. Of all the characters, my favorite character is still Suze, the destroyer demon. He’s just so awesome and so unique when it comes to demons.
The challenges facing Winn and Mac seem insurmountable, and I was on the edge of my seat while reading. Gayle has a fast-paced style I just love. It did take me a couple chapters to get into Day After because it’d been awhile since I’ve read After Dark. The touches of humor helped alleviate the intensity of the storyline. The twists and turns kept me guessing, especially as Gayle continues to build the mythological world within our own. Several times I gasped at the new information we learned about Mac, Winn, and his sister, and that ending—wow, it had me crying.
For readers looking for complex worldbuilding, humor, and an intense fast-paced read, then I highly recommend Emi Gayle’s 19th Year trilogy. I loved After Dark, but I enjoyed Day After even more!
Mac's day to decide what form to choose is approaching, and to help with this important decision Winn has taken it upon himself to guide and educate her about all the different supernatural creatures she can choose. But some unexpected things happen--Mac's mom, Winn's sister and Mac, and WInn's dad...OhMyGods! Crazy stuff I tell ya! I did not see any of it coming! And I LOVE surprises!
As I said, Mac's time to decide is almost up, and yet, she is no closer to choosing a form. I am dying to find to know what she'll choose in the end and if she will have to give up Winn and if choosing human is even a possibility (though I don't know if she'd ever go with human...)!
This book was in Winn's POV, which was okay, I suppose. But I honestly liked Mac's voice a lot better. But really, I am loving this series. it SOOO good!
I loved the romance, the action, and all the different supernatural creatures! Awesome :) And one character that is really growing on me is Winn's little sister...love her!
Overall, I loved this book and cannot wait to read the conclusion to this wonderful series! Highly recommended!
Let me start be saying DARN YOU EMI GAYLE!!!! I received Day After from a giveaway contest on Goodreads, the problem with receiving the second book is that I had to go and buy the first book so not to be completely lost. Now with that said, I was actually quite interested in After Dark 19th Year (book 1).And was glad to have found it in the round about way I did...... When I finished After Dark I could not wait to dive into Day After. I am a sucker for a little romance mixed with a lot of paranormal and a side of character. And neither book disappointed me. Winn and Mac make me root for them the 12 make me want to punch, love, chat and hang with them all at different times. And I could have used a Suze in my life.... (All though I did have an uncle named Sue)The ride was fast with just the right amount of curves on the way. The only problem I have is I am now stuck wanting MORE...... You have left me hanging wondering what Mac will chose. Heartbroken to think this could be it for Winn. PLEASE hear my pleads and end my torture in October when the third book Darkest Day is released. Like I said before I am rooting for them.
Emi Gayle’s second installment of The 19th Year Trilogy was even better than the first!
I really enjoyed seeing how the characters develop in this story. Winn and Mac are still evolving and trying to decide how to make their relationship work. Winn’s family plays a bigger role in this story. I really enjoyed seeing Zoe grow up in this book. Her role in the story is more defined as she becomes a bigger part of the story, not just Winn’s tag-a-long little sister. We also get to know the Josie, Raven, Felix and the other council members a bit better in this story. This really helps the reader to understand Ms. Gayle’s magical world even better! Even the school bully Ridge has more character in this one. You really don’t like him but you feel there may be more to him than we know. And my favorite of all- SUZE! He just keeps getting funnier. I love his humor (and his outfits!)
Be warned- the ending will leaving you screaming “NOOO she can’t end the book like that!” I can’t wait to read the next one!
I received and ARC copy Day After continues the story of Mac and Winn. Mac is a changeling, which means she can change into any supernatural being, but she has to decide what she wants to be for the rest of her life. Winn has become Mac's trainer. His job is to prepare Mac to take her place on the supernatural council, but also to support her in choosing which supernatural being Mac will be. Winn has his job cut out for him, because Mac doesn't trust the council and does not want to be a part of it. Will Winn be able to complete his job? What will Mac choose?
It was interesting to read this story from Winn's perspective. I liked reading his thoughts about all the new information he received. Mac is emotional and very reactionary, whereas Winn is analytical and questions everything. They are able to balance each other out. I enjoyed the book and the many secrets that were revealed, but it was slow at times. The ending was a killer! How long will I have to wait for the next book? I hope not long!
Well this is a fantastic turn. You all get to be inside Winn's head instead of Mac's. I actually loved Mac's POV, but this is a very unique way to continue a story. Since Winn has become such a big character, you get to see how he is growing now.
This is a great addition, and book two will surprise you just as much if not more than that the first. I learned so much more about these council members who just baffle me constantly. Mac is still involved, but you only see actions, not her thoughts. I loved this. It left for more mystery to the story. Plus, Winn has a big job and majorly huge shoes to fill.
The plot of this one is going to rock your shoes. Pretty clever with these new secrets that come to light. I actually feel a little sorry for both Mac and Winn, as they each learn things, and how it's going to affect their future. Look, all I can say without giving away something spoilery is you are SERIOUSLY missing out if you aren't reading this series!! It's too phenomenal to miss out on!!! 5 PHENOMENAL PAWS!!
I got a copy for review in exchange for an honest review.
This book was different than I expected, but I did enjoy it. Unlike the first book this book isn’t told from Mac’s pov, but from Winn’s pov. I really liked seeing his side of things, although I did miss seeing Mac’s side of things. There is much mystery and every time I felt like I got closer to the truth, but at the end I still felt like I didn’t know it all.
The story is really good and it kept me wanting to continue reading it. I practically finished this book in one setting, because I wanted to know what would happen next. The beginning was a bit slow, but when the pace picked up it did stay interesting. I love how much mystery there is in this book, Mac and Winn knows so less about the supernatural world and this means the reader doesn’t know that much either. So the reader finds out about everything alongside the main characters.
There were some twists and turns I really liked, but also some parts I didn’t. The story was very well written and I really like the idea of Changelings and how they have to choose a form. In this book much more history is unveiled and I just wanted to know more and more every time we got a bit of information.
The characters are really likeable too, although seeing Mac through other eyes made me like her a bit less. Sometimes she just needs to think before she acts. I did like Winn more now we got his pov and it was nice seeing his side of things. I also really liked Zoe, although I wished she played a bigger part. Mac and Winn their friends on school also still play a role, I actually was surprised at how much they still mattered even with all the supernatural stuff going on they still played a part.
The world building progresses with slow steps and sometimes it is frustrating when you realize how less you actually know, but on the other hand I did like how I find out more about the world piece by piece alongside Mac and Winn. In this book we certainly learn a whole lot more about the world and some history, although I still would like to have more knowledge about this original world and all the supernaturals that inhabit it. Even in this book I still have no idea what the different types of supernaturals really are and what their limits and strengths are, there just isn’t enough attention for this, but on the other hand I also get that there are so many different races that it would be impossible to give information about all of them. There is so much world building behind this all that I think the piece by piece method actually works best.
To conclude: a great sequel. I had to get used to Winn’s pov for a while, but I liked seeing his pov. I like the mystery and how we only get information piece by piece. I really like the characters, although I would’ve preferred to learn more about Zoe. The world building is done well and interesting, although I do want more of it. I am really looking forward to the next book!
I was blown away by After Dark and was excited to jump back into the fascinating world Emi Gayle has created. In Day After we see more action, and learn more about the world and the creatures who reside there. I quickly consumed this and look forward to the final book. The tale is fast paced, filled with mind blowing revelations and characters you cannot help but love.
Winn agrees to be Mac's teacher and to meet with the council for lessons. As he learns he cannot reveal information to Mac unless she asks. With only six months left, Winn takes his job as teacher seriously even if it means losing the love of his life forever. The tale that unfolds has suspense, danger, impossible decisions and an impossible romance. The tale is delivered from Winn's perspective and I enjoyed getting inside his head.
While the last book focused on Mac Thorne’s perspective and personality this time we really get inside Winn’s head. Tasked with an impossible responsibility he readily accepts. He must help Mac ask the right questions and guide her; which will ultimately separate them. As he interviews those on the council he begins to discover everything isn’t black and white. I really like Winn, although he is only seventeen, he takes his responsibilities seriously and his love for Mac is unselfish. The relationship struggles as Mac pushes Winn away and even when he wants to throw in the towel, he cannot stop helping her. I loved how he gives this confident outward appearance and then we glimpse his inner fears and thoughts. One of things I like about him is that he totally gets Mac; from her snarky attitude to her refusal to ask the right questions. He is a loyal nerd whom you cannot help but adore. We learn more about the council as well as Winn’s Dad and sister. Suze is back and I gotta tell you I love this crazy demon protector.
Gayle weaves a tale that keeps you guessing. There is an air of suspense and mystery throughout both books that kept me turning the pages. She drops subtle clues and adds foreshadowing that make me believe in possibilities and question everything! The council and their “ask the right questions" was clever as it slowly reveals information that will aid both Mac and Winn. There are some intense scenes and unknown forces at work that kept me on edge. The last few chapters and the ending had my emotions all over and some of the things we learn had me gasping aloud. Winn and Mac really work as a couple, he is the yin to her yang and they bring out the best in each other. The book really worked from Winn’s perspective. I was excited to learn Gayle will do a dual POV in the next book. *happy dance* ARC received in exchange for unbiased review and originally published Caffeinated Book Reviewer
This was a good sequel but not a great one only because Mac and Winn spent most of the book apart or not getting along which had me a little bummed. Winn's POV was distinctly different from Mac's in that he tended to think things out more as opposed to just rushing into them headlong so the pace in this one was a little slower than the first one but I still enjoyed seeing things from Winn's perspective and it made me understand him a little more. He was still just as sweet and caring as before, but you also got to see the strain he was under having to deal the reality of Mac's situation and the future (or maybe lack there of) of their relationship in a way that wouldn't have been conveyed quite as clearly had he not been the one telling the story. Though I liked seeing it all through Winn's eyes, I still missed Mac and often wondered what she was up to when she and Winn weren't together.
There were less romantic bits in this one which was disappointing because it was what made me fall in love with After Dark in the first place with the cute moments and the insane chemistry between Mac and Winn but the moments here were too few and far between for my taste. Also there was some really random bits thrown in with Ridge and Maddie that didn't feel particularly relevant to what was going on but other than that I liked the book and I can't wait to see what's next.
Wow! Okay honestly I feel that Winn is just too good for Mac...maybe that's because I haven't read the first book. Winn does EVERYTHING for Mac; talk about the meaning of whipped huh? & Mac doesn't seem to show him any gratitude except for the occasional kisses and fondling. This is how it seems to go.
Winn: Here let me assist you in any way possible with a life changing decision. Mac: *Fondles Winn* Winn: Ok, that's enough gratitude.Let me get to work and be your slave.
But later on, I kind of grew to like Mac. She's a tough character - one who finds it hard to show her emotions and that I can relate too. She truly loves Winn but is hard pressed to show it because that's just not who she is. These two character can be summed up in one perfect quote: Opposites really do attract!
An awesome read! And thank you to Goodreads for this book oh and thank you to Emi Gayle for the signed book marks and free book as well!
3.8 rating This was a really fast read; I finished it in one night! This book was different from the frist in regards to the narrator; Winn was the narrator this time and it was great to see his point of view. Winn is such a cutie!I was a tad pissed at how Mac treated him and what she said to him. I am glad that Winn fought back and did what he did. Nope, I'm not spoiling this book. There will be no such things called spoilers. Nope, nada. Anyways, we got to get more background on Mac and Winn which made this book much better. I will await the next and final book patiently :)
