Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
John Green's first novel, Looking for Alaska, won the 2006 Michael L. Printz Award presented by the American Library Association. His second novel, An Abundance of Katherines, was a 2007 Michael L. Printz Award Honor Book and a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. His next novel, Paper Towns, is a New York Times bestseller and won the Edgar Allen Poe Award for Best YA Mystery. In January 2012, his most recent novel, The Fault in Our Stars, was met with wide critical acclaim, unprecedented in Green's career. The praise included rave reviews in Time Magazine and The New York Times, on NPR, and from award-winning author Markus Zusak. The book also topped the New York Times Children's Paperback Bestseller list for several weeks. Green has also coauthored a book with David Levithan called Will Grayson, Will Grayson, published in 2010. The film rights for all his books, with the exception of Will Grayson Will Grayson, have been optioned to major Hollywood Studios.
In 2007, John and his brother Hank were the hosts of a popular internet blog, "Brotherhood 2.0," where they discussed their lives, books and current events every day for a year except for weekends and holidays. They still keep a video blog, now called "The Vlog Brothers," which can be found on the Nerdfighters website, or a direct link here.
In theory, reading a sampler of four books is awesome. In reality, I forgot about the harsh reality of being a obsessive reader who must finish ALL THE THINGS.
It really bugs my noodle when I start books that hook me and then can't finish them at my leisure. So now of course I must add four more good books to my growing to read list while I figure out a way to procure them. *shakes fist at John Green*
My only teensy gripe with TFIOS is that it's from a teen girl's POV but her internal monologue is laden with the vernacular of a grown man. Oh well. We can't all experience the world from the vantage point of ever having been a teenage girl. In a weird way it kind of makes her sound cooler.
Though this sampler is entertaining and well-written I would highly recommend going straight through the complete books. If you like YA fiction and protagonists that are variants of Kevin Arnold from my favorite tv show as a kid, "The Wonder Years," you'll like these.
As someone who is usually pretty leary of books that seem to explode and get praised by everyone, John Green fell right into that category for me. This sampler was a great (read "free") way for me to decide whether or not to deem him, and his novels, worthy of my bookshelves. Searching for Alaska, Paper Towns, and (of course) The Fault in Our Stars were the best--or most likely to be--in my humble opinion. Excerpts were long enough to give a real sense of character and draw a reader into their stories, almost long enough to create those feelings all of us book lovers long to have with at least one character in a book. By the time I made it to The Fault in Our Stars (the last in line), I was becoming tired of the predominantly male casts when there were such entrancing females like Alaska and Margo. Pleasantly surprised to see a female POV in The Fault!
John Green is arguably the best YA/new adult author writing today. I only classify his writing this way because of the characters in his books. I left YA/new adult in the dust many, many years ago, but I love his writing, so don't let this designation scare you off.
This book offers a few chapters from four of Green's novels, one of which I had read previously. (The Fault in Our Stars, which is excellent) The only thing I didn't like about the esampler was that it did what it was supposed to do. I wanted to keep reading the selection and I only got a taste. Of course, that was the point--to let readers get a taste of Green's writing and bring them into the Green fan group.
It's a cute little sampler. Grabbed one for me (even though I own all of his books) and my younger sister who has a short attention span. So these short little excerpts are great for her! ;P
It was intriguing to read the first chapters of these novels. John Green seems like a good author, but I still haven't read anything by him. This almost made me want to.
I LOVED it! This sample was long enough for me to want to read the full book! I definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for a new book to read.
