I am so excited to work through this atlas with my kiddos. What makes this atlas so cool is that it is a bit different than other atlases. You will find the maps, but there is more...lots more. There is information on flags, birds and flowers of each state. This book is filled with pictures, charts and stats. I am always looking for ways to keep the learning going over the summer months and into the school year to supplement what they learn at school. This book is going to be a HUGE hit! It is a super big book and has bright and colorful photos. I cannot get over how jam packed with facts, maps and other tidbits this book is. You will get to explore so much. This book also includes a detailed glossary and index. I love that the facts are written in a way that is easy to understand. Adults and kids alike will get lost looking at the pictures and learning so much cool and interesting information. So awesome!!! 5 HUGE stars

When I was in fourth grade, my most prized possession was a large, spiral bound book that included information and maps of New York City's five boroughs. That was the year we learned the history of New York at the same time we were taught how to use maps. It was a lesson I learned so well, that I still have a real appreciation for the value of maps. And now, National Geographic Kids has released a new edition of their United States Atlas. As they say on the cover: "It's your country. Learn it. Love it. Explore it."
The country is divided into five regions - the Northeast, the Southeast, the Midwest, the Southwest and the West, and includes United States territories. Each region includes a physical and political map (no, the political map is a map of who voted for whom, but a map that shows state or country boundaries, large bodies of water, and the where major cities are located).
After exploring a region, there are detailed maps and information about each state within that region. Information on each states economy, natural resources, unique attractions as well as the basics - the population, the capital, state bird and flower, and interesting facts about different cities within the state. At the back of the book, students can find detailed information about U.S. territories of Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands. Included are also U.S. Facts & Figures, a Glossary and Postal Abbreviations, Map Abbreviations and websites where more information can be found.
A useful tool for back to school.

The study of maps and related geographic information has fascinated me. I have found that a well-conceived atlas provides a mass of information in pictorial and bite sized information format that is readily assimilated by all ages. For that reason, I find that having a quality atlas in the home, classroom, and school library of paramount importance.
The expected accuracy and quality of the National Geographic Kids United States Atlas, 5th Edition ranks top of the list of books to pursue for the age 8 to 12 child. Other ages will benefit from this publication as well.
Grouped regionally, each state has its own two pages showing a map with small images indicating products of the economy and where these are produced. Natural resources and conditions are shown as well as information specific to that state (location of Indian reservations, national forests, etc.).
The map showing natural hazards - blizzards, drought, floods, hurricanes, ice storm, tornado, wildfire, earthquakes, tsunami - was quite interesting to me as were other facts and images showing the variety that is The United States of America.
Truly a book to add to a child's educational collection and reference collections of children's libraries.
DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy to facilitate this review. Opinions are my own and freely given.

Wonderful, colorful and engaging Atlas of US for kids. The intended audience is 8-12 years old, but I think that younger and older kids will find it useful and can enjoy it too.
The atlas contains more than 75 maps, colorful images, info graphics, and fun facts about the country, states and regions. There are physical and political facts about United States.
Kids will learn about flags, or animals common for each state. There are information about energy, climate, population. The maps are detailed and easy to follow. Colorful photography and images will catch every child attention. Fun and interesting facts will keep children occupied and craving for more.
Learning never has been that much fun.
This is amazing atlas, that will help kids in their homework and can be used at home and school.
Every parent should consider it to buy. Especially that new school year is upon us.

I loved maps as a kid. During any of our trips or Sunday drives, I would have the map out in the backseat, looking ahead to the next town we'd be going through. I loved measuring the distance between towns and looking at all the names of towns. I remember having a huge atlas that was referenced time and time again to look up where family members lived or a place mentioned on the news.
National Geographic is THE gold standard for reference books and this atlas is a must-have for your home or school library! This atlas features over 75 maps and 350 images of all things USA. Cartographers have teamed up with experts in education to create this wonderful resource for learning all about our wonderful country. Children will learn not just about the location of each state but it's physical and political features as well. There are icons to show each states economy and places of interest are mentioned highlighting the history and tourist attractions.
The book is divided into Regions beginning with a physical map and a political map with borders. Then pages highlight the assets of that region before moving into individual maps and pages for each state.
My first stop in the book was the Iowa pages. I love that it featured RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa) as well as the numerous farming productions that contribute to our nation's economy. Kids will like looking at the maps up close and seeing what economies are key in a particular region. A corn stalk is featured right where we live and that is so true. We have a field right off of our backyard and are surrounded by corn and soybean fields everywhere we go.
This is such a wonderful resource for classrooms, home libraries, and homeschooling families. National Geographic has knocked it out of the park again with a great book for children to learn and enjoy!

When was the last time you looked at an atlas? Do you know have to use this guide as a tool to get you to your destination? Did you know you could learn a lot about the state you live in or the states around you? National Geographic Kids United States Atlas is a Parent’s Choice award winner. This fifth addition is key to learning about the country we all live in. This guide has all 50 states broken up into categories such as The Northeast, the Southeast, The Midwest, The Southwest, The West and The Territories. Readers can easily navigate the facts, figures, glossary, abbreviations, symbols and also find other resources to learn more. Photos and colorful boxes include snippets of facts about the state, its wildlife, cultures and so much more.
Teachers, parents and kids will be engaged as they learn about the United States population, natural hazards, capitals and even politics. Pennsylvania was established in 1682 and is the busiest freshwater port in the U.S. Kansas is a major beef producer and the country’s second largest wheat grower. New Mexico is home to the annual international Balloon Fiesta, the largest in the world. The state of California is an industrial leader, producing jet aircraft, ships and high-tech equipment. This guide is a useful tool for any home, school or library.

I love maps at any time, and this atlas is full of amazing maps! It's got pictures and factoids and terrain and history, all with colorful lines and photos and interesting little details.
The first thing I did was turn to the page for my state, Georgia, and poured over the pages, finding my town, and looking for nearby national parks and monuments.
I like how the book is divided up by region- SouthEast, SouthWest, NorthEast, MidWest, etc... It makes it easy to find what you are looking for, and to see how states that border each other have a lot in common.
This book does a great job of packing a lot of information into each page without losing clarity or making the page feel jumbled. Because it's a paperback, it's lightweight and perfect for little backpacks.
Now I want to get the World Atlas too!

Another winner from National Geographic. REVIEW IS FOR 6th EDITION (not on GoodReads). Each state's map is accompanied by fabulous photographs, straightforward statistics, and some little-known or eye-opening facts. The atlas is divided by geo-political areas (South, Midwest, etc.) and each area is similarly introduced. National Geographic includes several pages of national information as well as entries for the U.S. territories. Perfect for homeschooling and for supplementing distance learning.
Thanks to Media Masters and National Geographic for the review copy.
