Evie is a popular novelist living out her dream. However, she has had little time for a social life. Now her publisher has set her up on a hot date with an underwear model. Well, why not? Evie needs a night out. But, her date doesn't exactly turnout as she had hoped. Kidnapped by a crime family with the idea that she would write a memoir for them, Evie is rescued by a man contracted by the FBI.
Nick, is a wealthy guy that can't seem to get his love life on track. Nick is a psychologist with a thriving television show and his sister is Evie's number one fan.
Meg, Nick's sister lives in idealistic Vermont. She is a loud mouthed, argumentative, take charge and no crap kind of woman. When her brother brings Evie to her home to hide out, Meg has the perfect plan to help Evie start a new life. But with Evie having possession of certain sensitive information the FBI would really find interesting, even Vermont might not be safe.
Nick and Evie find that even though they are in a pressure filled situation, their attraction to each other can not and will not be denied. They both wish for the same things, but if hit man Tony Aiello has his way, Nick and Evie will not get a chance at happy ever after.
I love romantic suspense novels. This first book has me thinking this series might be one I'm glad I discovered. Crime families are always fascinating and this story is no exception. Once they have you in their sites the only way out is to start life all over with a new identity. It looks like that is what Evie is faced with.
The characters are all likeable, and even though Meg is brash, she was super cool, and Nick is super HOT! This fast paced crime thriller with a healthy dose of romance is a great kick off to a new series. This one gets an A.
Really interesting Romantic Suspense. The pace of the story was smooth and engaging. I really liked the characters for the most part. Evie took a little getting used to, but when she found her stride I really enjoyed her spunky attitude! Nick is really quite delicious!! I loved their dynamic!
The supporting cast is really fantastic, I was laughing a lot this book! A really delightfully crafted tale that takes you on an adventure from page one!! I could not put it down!
The steam is rather light, ok not really any yummy details at all. I like my romances spicier, a balance of story and steam work best for me. While the story was on point, the steam was luke-warm, at best.
I can'y wait to see what happens next for these two!! Ms Millhouse is definitely an author to watch!!
*Disclosure - I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts, opinions and ratings are my own.*
This was very good. It has action and suspense. A nice dose of romance and of course a crazy sadistic mobster. I think that Nick and Evie trusted each other very quickly though. I mean Evie is scared and on the run and she meets this stranger and trusts him pretty much right away. Other than that this was nicely written and a great storyline.
Evie Longfellow has achieved her dream of becoming a best-selling author of crime fiction. But when mobster Paulie Marino becomes a fan, Evie must go into hiding, leaving her writing career behind.
I am writing this review on very little sleep as I stayed up far too late reading this novel. Not only did I adore Millhouse's characters, particularly the Jones family living in rural Vermont, I found myself sympathizing with hit man Tony Aiello who must find Evie while also keeping an eye on Paulie. The two families, one of them a New York City Italian crime syndicate and the other practicing sustainable farming in Vermont, could not be more different, and yet Millhouse manages to pull her reader into the complicated family dynamic of both of them.
This is one of the best indie books I've read. All the things you'd expect in a traditionally published novel, Millhouse delivers: excellent writing, realistic dialogue, strong pacing, and a killer story. This is a novel that proves how indie writing can stand up alongside the best of traditionally published writing.
The description, and the cover, are the complete and total opposite of what I expected. The description is half right in that Evie is abducted, but I thought Nick would be unwilling help. The cover made me think I was in for a raunchy romance novel and it was anything but that.
Overall, this book was decent. I was annoyed with the characterizations at first, but they grew on me. It's not that they were flat; they were simply boring.
Evie Longfellow is an RN who ends up becoming a bestselling author with 3 books in just 6 months. That alone is unrealistic.
She ends up kidnapped by Paulie Marino, a mobster, whose mother is NOT a woman to be reckoned with. It's absolutely gross that Marino's son doesn't recognize how creepy his father is.
I like that Evie "hears" her characters in her head, and puts herself in their situations to help herself
She is rescued by Nick Franklin, a diehard fan who is obsessed with Evie but tries not to be. He and his family are pretty awesome. His nephew Patrick both irritates me (mainly because of his teenage boy tendencies), and makes me laugh aloud.
I was glad that there was mostly no sex, that the characters were mostly mature about their relationships. Unfortunately, that goes to hell. And the "surprise" about that? Again, unoriginal, boring, and freaking irritating.
A lot of information was repeated, though that was pretty cool with how the end reflected the beginning in some ways. Still, I don't need to read 5+ times that Evie's cat is a Russian Blue named Boo Boo. We get it. And given that Millhouse is an adult, it's quite unimaginative that her cat is the exact same! (gasps). There's also a few paragraphs that can be summed up as "Nick's fancy is a fantasy girl and he wants her to be more than a fantasy."
- Evie is naive at times, but it makes sense given her previous lifestyle. - The joke about electronic medial records made me laugh. Doctors complain to their patients about that too! - Evie's phone goes from 50% to nearly dead in almost no time. That doesn't happen. - Paulie is utter scum, and it's telling that his buddies and mother feel the same. There is almost no detail about his exploits, but the imagination can certainly take over. - I love the descriptions of the Vermont resort.
This story had me at Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 magnum. But seriously, I've recently read several thrillers with messed up gun references and it’s cool when an author gets it right. Otherwise, I found the story fairly well structured with good characters and a fun plot.
Weak aspects were a romance that lacked tension and the main character's annoying depiction as a writer rendered in celebrity gaga detail. Fortunately, when removed from the Jessica Fletcher role, the character felt real, spunky, with a sympathetic emotional range.
All told I think many will enjoy this novel. I'd rate this story PG for some implied icky violence and non descriptive sex. A few edit errors and weak romantic suspense drag my overall rating down to two stars but I’m a stingy star giver. A pleasant, nothing spectacular read is a two for me and ‘Careful What You Wish For’ is a completely enjoyable entertainment.
What does sexy male underware models, a famous author, the mafia, and trout fishing have in common? This awesome story. A great romantic suspense that makes you want to keep turning the pages. I connected with Evie and Nick and rooted for them through the whole story. Evie and Nick fall in love with the mafia on their heels. You will not want to put the book down until you know they are safe. Her secondary characters are also wonderful, Patrick and Meg have great personalities. A very enjoyable read.
Looking for a romantic suspense where the hero gallantly saves the heroine? This is the book for you. Don't make the mistake of thinking that Evie Longfellow was just standing around, waiting for some hunk doctor to get her out of trouble. This fiery, talented young author is no swooning, "rescue me" heroine. She gives just as good as she gets. Fast and exciting action, non-stop suspense, a romance that leaps off the pages, and wonderfully engaging characters, this is a great read.
