Distinct parts of this book had a profound impact on me...so much so that I have referenced it in talks I have given. However, as a whole, the book did not capture my attention, thus my 3 star vs. what might have been a 4 or even 5 star.
An overview on attitudes toward adversity. Everyone gets some, some get more than others. Already into disc 4, I like the way the author categorizes our response to adversity on a continuum, but that's not exactly how life is. We don't usually respond in a nice pattern. My friend pointed that out to me today, and I agreed. We are more likely to slide up and down and then back up the 'continuum', kind of like we do as we process loss. I am probably not going to complete this book. It has become tedious and find myself objecting to more of the premises. I do not agree that will is what needs to be mustered to push through adversity. It works on some, but on the unexpected and shocking adversity some of us have encountered, not so much. The emphasis on will is discouraging in itself as we deal with complicated issues within and outside ourselves as we struggle through. The author does include a recommendation for building a support team for adversity, however, it's presented more like a business proposal and not the type of personal support so many problems require. I don't question the author's experience and their records as having overcome tremendous challenges. They are both possess amazing internal fortitude and have persevered through very tough problems. I am just not connecting as deeply with the subject as I had hoped.
It is a little bit boring at the beginning, but from page to page, it makes me more interested in the inspiring lessons.

"Nghệ thuật khó nhất của con người là làm sao để sống cho đúng nghĩa trong mỗi ngày của cuộc đời mình." - Henry David Thoreau.
Definitely dated, somewhat sexist, and many of the examples turned me off from his message. The tone was condescending. It had a very, “pick yourself up by your bootstraps” vibe to it, with no real acknowledgement of systematic or societal impacts on a person’s ability to deal with adversity.
Certainly, it is a self help book. I pursue another point of view about psychological self help. It gives me what I expect. The book suggests that the obstacles are the triggers for success. The matter is how we see that obstacles, how we think and react about it! Interesting book. It really helps to overcome our reactive habits and start to think, say, and act more details and diligent. You may see yourself as a different person if you try the advises from the book. Read and try it!
Saya belajar jangan takut thd masalah. Hehe..biasanya,, masalahnya adalah cara pandang kita thd masalah. Terlalu fokus dg masalahnya, bukan fokus memecahkan masalahnya (pd solusinya). Hahaaa...kalau ngga mau punya masalah, yaa kita sdh tidak ada di dunia ini dong ;)
