Spoilers, Spoilers, Spoilers: Read at Your Own Risk

It's amazing how much a few months can make a difference. Back when I first read the chapters of this volume (via their Japanese releases), I was...annoyed, to say the least. "Shiina," I thought, "why must you drag this out so much?" (Aside: given one of the author chapter notes in this volume, I think I have an editor to blame for some of the pacing issues.) But, now that I've read the chapters once again, I feel much more "at peace" with the developments (and setbacks) of this volume.

The characters spend all of their time this volume in Okinawa on their second-year class trip, so it's fun to have the change-up to the school scenarios a little bit. This volume is rather three-pronged in that it tackles more than just the relationship between Kazehaya and Sawako and goes beyond to focus on some character conflict for Yano and hints of change for the friendship between Chizu and Ryu. Given that it's become rare to find shoujo manga that focus on the supporting cast, I'm glad for the shift in focus.

First off, the initial focus of this volume: Kazehaya, Sawako, and their budding sexual tension. Even though rebellion against parental ideals and wishes is quite common in teenager-centric media, I think it's somehow a bit more uncommon to find the just-as-realistic struggle of a child trying to balance his parents' ideals and his own desires in the hope of not disappointing the adults in his life. The latter is exactly the conflict Kazehaya faces in this volume: though he wants his and Sawako's relationship to go to the "next level," he knows that doing so would go against what their fathers wanted, so he resists, even with an almost-kiss (paced across 16 pages) nearly causing him to "break their confidence in him."

But here's the thing I hate, even -- again -- as it's realistic to what a teenage boy such as Kazehaya might do: never does Kazehaya tell Sawako these things or share with her what "boundaries" their fathers wanted their relationship to follow. Sawako is left in the dark, and she ends up blaming herself for the distance that appears between her and Kazehaya. It frustrates me to no end that Kazehaya doesn't seem to view Sawako as enough of an equal at this point to speak the truth to her. Instead, as if she were a child, he leaves her with clipped sentences, assumptions, and false impressions. You may talk the talk about valuing Sawako, Kazehaya, but you're not walking the walk as far as I'm concerned. Shape up, boy, or I may just take you off my list of fictional crushes.

Yano's conflict seems to be the crux of this volume, and in many ways she also proves to be the most interesting character in this installment. In a relationship with a boy she doesn't love or even really know, she finds herself wistful as she recalls how wholehearted and serious her friends were in their romantic pursuits. Though Yano is the most "mature" of the three girls, she still has a lot of growing up and learning to do, especially given that she has yet to experience "love" as her friends have. Take these thoughts from her, for instance:
I thought he asked me out because he cared, and I thought his affection would make me respond in kind. That's what I wanted.
The sad thing is that Yano wasn't unrealistic in believing this. I think that's a plight common to many unhappy romantic relationships: one side was the one to be "pursued" and eventually settled for such a one-sided connection because no one "better" came along. This person then keeps hold of that (often unhealthy, restrictive, or stagnant) relationship, believing that "love will grow" and that happiness can be found in a relationship with no mutual respect and desire.

My favorite dialogue of this volume also connects to Yano and her boyfriend plight as she realizes that Mogi asked her out under false pretenses:

Mogi's friends: He's not that bad! He just expected too much [intimacy] from you!
Yano: So he was disappointed over expectations he never shared with me? Nice.

Oh, Yano, I love you. I really hope you find a guy who will treat you well and respect you. (Note: I am not a fan of Kento's newfound interest in Yano. Why? Because, from my take, he sees her as one-part challenge and two-parts "wounded bird" he needs to save. Although I do think he respects her, I don't think his intentions are "right" for what she wants and needs. Also, truth be told, I think Shiina had always intended Yano to pair up with their teacher, Arai, sometime post-graduation, but somehow Shiina was dissuaded from it because the pairing might have been too "typical" [given that Yano seems "the type" who might date a teacher] or too "shocking" [given that I've seen the "forbidden love between a student and teacher" trope less and less in shoujo manga over the last ten years, probably due to a rise in real instances of student-teacher relationships]. Even so, I'm not finding the potential Kento/Yano pairing very organic at all. Must we see all these characters paired up together in neat bunches? Really? Why not introduce some new characters then?)

Ending this volume is a focus on Chizu and Ryu as they come to a crossroads in their friendship. I love how, earlier in the volume, Chizu defended her friendship with Ryu and seemed really hurt by the fact that someone told her that she should stay away from him if she didn't like him romantically. (I, just like Chizu, felt very offended by this because WHY is there this false belief that a girl and a guy can't be platonic friends?) Of course, Chizu's steadfast denial crumbles as she is confronted with the fact that, yes, Ryu doesn't see her as simply a friend...and thus there is the promise that things will get really, really complicated with them henceforth.

Overall, volume 14 was a solid installment (even with my qualms about how these character setbacks affect the next few volumes). Even though there may come a day when I look back and think, "Why was I attached to this manga so much?", I hope I never forget that this manga made me recognize facets of myself, others, and our society within its pages.

(Endnote: At the time of my writing this -- July 2012 -- it's been exactly three years since I started reading Kimi ni Todoke. Yay for milestones!)

The last few volumes of this series have really stalled for me, but I wasn't ready to give up on this series just yet. As much as I love the central characters of the story - Sawako and Kazehaya - I've come to love their friends perhaps even more. And, thankfully and wonderfully, this volume turns the focus more on them.

I've lost interest in Sawako's and Kazehaya's romance. I don't mind that they're awkward and unsure, I'm just tired of pages upon pages dragging out a scene that doesn't need that much space, space that could be put to better use. Chapter 58 in the center of the volume has the perfect example of this. I know the mangaka is trying to create the atmosphere and the tension between the characters, but it's overkill. This could have been told in half the pages. Kind of like the last few volumes. Maybe this is just personal preference, but this dragging out drives me crazy.

That rant over, the volume does get to the point (thankfully) with Sawako's best friends Ayane and Chizuru. Ayane has seemingly had more experience in matters of love compared to her friends. But, her ability to easily move in and out of relationships with different boyfriends really conveys the opposite. Love isn't as simple a matter of acquiring a boyfriend. Ayane's lack of feelings is nicely juxtaposed with Sawako's blossoming romance.

Chizuru is about as dense as a girl can be, but maybe it's hard to realize it when your childhood best friend is in love with you. She is one lucky girl to have someone has patient as Ryu. Ryu is just cool. He's one of my favorites because he really is so well developed. He doesn't say much, but you know exactly where he's coming from. I love characters like that.

Kimi ni Todoke has found its feet again (or rather, I'm glad it's moving along again instead of getting mired down in awkward stumbling limps) and I like the direction it's going. Kento, I'm rooting for you!

A lot happened during the school trip. Sawako and Kazehaya’s almost kiss had me screaming!!!

Ryu confessed to Chizu finally…. And she rejected him. I still have hope though!

The scene between Ayane and Kento was really sweet. I’m not sure if they will end up together, but I like their platonic friendship too.

HELP. IT'S TOO CUTE.

I appreciate that they're finally focusing on some characters more besides the main couple.
But OHMYGOD THE MAIN COUPLE. The first bit of this had me holding my breath wondering if some stuff was FINALLY going to happen and when it didn't I got super upset.

If you ever just want positive feelings of emotion, just pick up one of these and you're good to go.

Let's dub this the "relationship drama/development" volume, shall we?

Hard to comment on this one without spoilers, to be honest. What I can say is that each of our three main female leads is in a different place in her relationship status/considerations. There's nervousness, shock, and even a feeling of forlorn longing. It's hard to say which one was the most interesting to read about, but all three instances had me curious to know more. Revisiting this series, I can honestly say that, after volume 10 or so, I really couldn't remember what happened. With that in mind, everything happening now is a surprise to me, but a pleasant and welcome one. In some ways, this shoujo is more mature than I previously remembered.

Next volume ahead!

Kimi ni Todoke is such an innocent love story between Sawako and Kazehaya that will make you "aww" during every scene that they share together. Watching the lives of Sawako and her friends, you just can't help but fall in love with all the characters that band together with her. I definitely recommend this books to all shojo fans or anyone who wants to watch such innocence and adorableness bloom <3

Poor Ayane is sorting out her relationship woes. She's got the problem of appearing sophisticated and just enough maturity but not quite enough in her view of relationships, and she's not as together as she may seem. Considering her best buddies are sincere to the point of idiots, I guess it's not surprising she feels a little left out. Don't like the Kento angle, I'm not fond of him since he's a busybody.

Ryu and Chizu go through a crisis. I can't say I understand the girl that confronted Chizu over being close to Ryu - Chizu was totally correct in asking what it had to do with the girl, and why she was telling her what to do. Everyone is responsible for their own feelings. Even if Ryu does like her (and we know he does) it is his choice to hang out with her, and she doesn't have to like him back. Obviously if she's aware of his interest it could be a little awkward and she might be more mindful of things, but ultimately they're friends.

Hmm another volume I have mixed feelings about. Mainly, I think it's because one character's story arc in this was really sad (to me anyway). I wouldn't say this is my least favorite volume, but it's probably the least "feel good" volume out of all them thus far. Lots of big steps for everyone and thought it interesting hearing about Kurumi (though it was extremely short) because I think it shows that people are usually more drawn to others when they are their REAL self.

And my Chizu ship! Ahhhh! Please let there be good things in store, please let there be good things in store…

Kento is quickly becoming a favorite character. I have been consistently surprised how there is much more behind his pretty face. He seems like a great guy! <3

And poor Sawako and Kazehaya! Cheering you guys on! You got this!

4.5/5 Volume 14 was absolutely solid. Our cast takes a school trip to Okinawa, I'm super jealous by the way I never did any awesome high school trips. Shota and Sawako find themselves with some alone time together and we get some more awkward but ultimately enjoyably sweet moments from the two of them.

The relationship between Chizuru and Ryu is also starting to come to a head and we get some excellent moments with those characters as well.

Finally we get a deeper look at Ayane who has agreed to date someone else during the school trip. I think I enjoyed her side of the story the most. It really made you appreciate her character all the more seeing a softer side to her. Also a very touching moment with her and Kento which I hope the mangaka with build upon soon.

Finally a cover with both Chizuru and Ayane. Waiting for the one with all 3 of the girls.

Ayane:(( Hope she'll find her own happiness soon, regardless if she's in a relationship or not (because I'm not a fan of Kento😅).
Can't wait to see how Ryu-Chizu develops too, individually and with each other
And of course we're going to be frustrated again with the will they won't they for Kazehaya's and Sawako's relationship progress 😒 just please don't drag it too long man (I really hope they will talk it out this time though and not repeat the same previous mistakes, which is definitely the main cause they got together too late)

AHH SO MUCH TENSION!

I'm super excited for our main MCs first kiss together. And Ryu and Chizu have my heart and I hate them for it..."-". What a cute way to confess! Sigh.

"That makes me happy... to see that you are interested in who I like...….The one I like has always been you."

AHHHHOSAUHPOHAFPOSHGRW I'M SICK TO MY STOMACH. Sigh.

I'm also sensing another couple in Yano and Kento. My heart can't take it.

3.5 Drama Drama Drama Stars!

Oh my goodness, this was the relationship volume! I'm not sure if I can handle all the baby drama. Kissing people, not kissing people, being with people you don't like, not confessing to people you like. It just seems so childish... and yet I keep on reading the series! lol. Oh the torture.

Also, too much tension between Sawako and Kazehaya, but it's puppy love, so what can you expect? They need to kiss already!

its over. de muchas maneras. its sooo over. ya me preguntaba yo qué tanto podría cambiar la relacion de chizu y ryu si los dos estaban estáticos en su dinámica y obvio que va a cambiar todo. para bien o para mal. ough. ayane diciendo i'm wondering if there is someone out there who could build up enough courage to confess to me. i'm wondering if it would be possible for me to love them back. ME VOMITO. IT'S OVER.

¡OMG!
