Goofballs #2
The Startling Story of the Stolen Statue
Fans of Dav Pilkey's The Adventures of Ook and Glook and Patricia Reilly Giff's ZigZag Kids will flock to this chapter-book mystery series full of slapstick humor and silly situations by the wildly popular Tony Abbott, author of the Secrets of Droon series.
The Goofballs Jeff, Brian, Mara and Kelly, haven't had a mystery to solve in a while, so they help decorate for the 100th Anniversary of Badger Point school celebration.
The new statue of the first principal is being unveiled at the party but the statue has disappeared. With clues like a skateboard in a piano, a broken pencil, a scrap of paper that smells like chlorine, and a climbing rope hung differently than the others, the Goofballs solve their goofiest mystery yet.

Jeff Bunter, Brian Rooney, Kelly Smitts and Mara Lubin are the GoofBalls. They are primary school detectives. And they have a reputation in town for being able to solve any mystery. They have not had a new case in some time so are helping prepare the school for the 100th Anniversary of Badger Point school celebration. They are helping to decorate the Cafeteri-Audi-Nasium! Badger Point is a small school, so they have combined the cafeteria, the auditorium, and the gymnasium into one multipurpose room. The mystery begins when the statue of the first principal of Badger Point School goes missing on the day it is to be unveiled. With such diverse clues like a skateboard in a piano, a broken pencil, a scrap of paper that smells like chlorine, and a climbing rope, the Goofballs solve their goofiest mystery yet. But you will need to read to find out how they put it all together.
This is the second book in one of two new series out this year by Tony Abbott. Like everything else I have read by him, it is a great read. This series is aimed at younger readers than his other series, but Abbott does an amazing job of gearing the story for them. This book was a wonderful read and though there are two more planned in the series I hope there will be many more to share with children after that!
Read the review and with links to other reviews of books by the authors on my blog Book Reviews and More. And also an author profile and interview with Tony Abbott.

The Goofballs' school is getting ready to celebrate it's 100th anniversary with an assembly, special gifts, speeches...and a statue of the school's first principal. But when the current principal goes to inspect everything a few hours before the assembly, he discovers the statue is missing! He calls the Goofballs in to let them know that he appreciates the work he has done to get everything ready but that he will have to cancel. Of course the Goofballs immediately go on the case but even when they find clues what do a broken pencil, a missing book, a skateboard, and a wet piece of paper lead to? They'll have to figure it out quick to save the day this time!
Another cute little tale. Again, these are based on action and humor not character development but that's appropriate for the target audience which they seem to please incredibly well going by the reaction of my 7yr old and they aren't too onerous for the adults who are commanded to read them either.
5 star rating given on behalf of my 7yr old.

Just before the 100th anniversary of Badger Point School, the first-principal’s statue disappears. The Goofballs follow many seemingly unrelated clues- a chlorine-soaked paper with “HEES GRATE” written on it, a broken pencil, someone’s skateboard hidden in a piano, and a climbing rope- to solve the crime. Is the thief a man with bushy red hair whose pet monkey tied the climbing rope? Or is the purple or pink or blond-headed girl in homeroom responsible? The Goofballs leave a fool-proof trap, don towel disguises, and accidentally flood the school as they work toward the solution. Never a dull moment when Goofballs are on the case!

The more I read this series, the more I like it. Again the pacing seemed a little too fast, but that's my age showing. For kids used to things coming at them quickly the way this story comes together should keep them engaged. I liked the mystery itself - it's all very clever especially given the age group this is intended for. I'd definitely throw this at young readers who love puzzles.

I read this one aloud to my husband and neither of us liked it. I think the book was supposed to be cute, not actually teach a lesson, but we were just annoyed.

I am in 1st grade, read this book in 3 days - it was fun to read the book. I have read many chapter books but this one was funny at few places. I liked the way the author has explained few difficult words. This was my 1st book in this series, I am planning to read more.
