Ryan’s entire life changed the night Scott surprised him in a bathroom at a party. Now Ryan’s soulless climb up the corporate ladder has stalled—but his quality life has become a whirlwind of laughter, joy and surprises, thanks to Scotty’s playful, gentle heart.
After three years together, they’re going to Ryan’s parents’ cabin to spend Christmas. Snowed in by the weather and locked under the icy glare of his mother’s disapproval, can Ryan show he has found the most profound happiness in the simplest of things?
Amy Lane dodges an EDJ, mothers four children, and writes the occasional book. She, her brood, and her beloved mate, Mack, live in a crumbling mortgage in Citrus Heights, California, which is riddled with spiders, cats, and more than its share of fancy and weirdness. Ryan and Scott are the Perfect Couple. They are so in lust and love after three years together, it hurts. But in a good way, because how can you not want all the happy and fluffy for these two?
Scott, going for Best Boyfriend of the Year, agrees to spend Christmas with Ryan's family, even though Ryan's mom is possibly the most passive-aggressive bitch of all time. I wanted to shake some compassion into her. It's not all about money, lady. Stop shitting on your son's happiness.
But Ryan's dad, sister, and his nieces and nephews are pretty awesome, and even the slightly homophobic brother-in-law comes around.
This book was written in 2012, before the SCOTUS decision legalizing marriage for ALL people, so the ending, while joyful, feels a little dated.
No matter, though. Scotty and Ryan are a forever kind of thing, and no piece of paper can top that.
While I enjoyed the first two books in this short story series, I think this one is my fave. Love how Ryan and Scott love each other. Bit o' steam & lots of sweet. And a mother that you want to push into a snowbank. The ending was pure awwwwww!
I read Phonebook last week and liked it well enough. It was short, cute, and sexy. But I needed more of Ryan and Scott, something beyond just a quickie and some "I-love-yous" thrown in. 'Puppy, Car, and Snow' continued their story perfectly, and gave me the emotional connection and romance, as well as the hot sexin'.
'Fluff' is an accurate description of Scott and Ryan's relationship. The two are sweet and fun. They spend their free time together, have a massive-sized "puppy", have successful careers, and are in the process of buying a house. The two are deeply committed to each other, which was clear in each of their interactions. They have a fairytale romance, and I was all on board with that.
Plus, they've got a great sex life. Was I a bit jealous? Perhaps. Have I added "front seat blowjob while stuck in a traffic jam" to my bucket list? Perhaps Yes.
I'm a sucker for holiday romances involving family, but I really didn't like Ryan's mother. She was just an ice queen. She was fine with Ryan being gay, she just didn't think Scott was good enough for her son. I can't say I liked her at all, even when she grudgingly accepted Scott at the end.
Overall, this is a very sweet holiday read, perfect for a rainy afternoon. For those who have read Scott and Ryan's two preceding shorts and are looking for more, 'Puppy, Car, and Snow' is a great follow-up.
A really sweet and poignant story about established lovers headed out to spend Christmas with family. They have to deal with Ryan's disapproving mother who has no issue being pretty horrible to her son's partner. I really enjoyed Ryan and Scott's relationship. I liked how they worked together and how they were real devoted partners to each other. Lots of cute moments but never overly so, this is the third in a series and not having read the previous stories this had a real standalone feel to it. I liked it enough that I'll get the others to see how these two hooked up. A really wonderful holiday read.
A nice conclusion to this short series. In this one Ryan and Scott are still madly in love with each other after 3 years together. They are spending Christmas with Ryan’s family. But Ryan’s mother is not a big fan of Scott..
I really hated Ryan’s mom. She was such a bitch. If I were Ryan I would have left, not just threatened it.
I did feel that the proposal was a bit anti-climactic, but at least these guys got their HEA. I did like how happy they were with each other. You could just feel the love.
I loved this series so much! And Scott is my favorite! He's slutty (to Ryan only), clingy and love sex and Ryan love him so-so much. Scott, in his old days before Ryan, when his boyfriend busy doing something else, he'd just find another boy friend .LOL. But with Ryan, oh he just sad. But Ryan do anything to make Scott happy. Anything ! What a lovely couple ! Really really recommended this one !
3.5-4* Scott and Ryan have a great if not close to perfect relationship, the only blight seems to be Ryan's family. Ryan's mother seems determined to be difficult and not like Scott, but will Christmas have a way of making things work out? :) It's a sweet , feel good christmasy story!
Simple, beautiful, touching story. Ryan is solid and dependable and Scotty colors his world. The two of them complement each other perfectly and in dealing with Ryan's ice queen of a mother, the relationship shines. It feels like Christmas, the good parts and the work it can be but you feel the love shinning through most of all. It's a real treat.
Awwe...how is it I didn't know about this story and these guys before? Ryan and Scott are super sweet and boy are they ever meant for each other, the kids are adorable, Ryan's dad and sister are exactly how family should be, the brother-in-law is an idiot and Ryan's mother is a bitch!
Another great Amy Lane story that will warm your heart! I loved it.
It should be noted that there are a couple of stories with this couple and it took me a while to figure that out because there is no mention of those stories on the blurb page at DSP. You don't NEED to have read them, but once I figured out who they were (I have read the others), it made more sense.
Ryan's family were okay with him being gay, they're just not okay with Scott. Ryan's highly driven mother has no respect for anyone whose primary purpose in life is not to claw their way to the top of the corporate ladder, and Scott is the antithesis of this, and Ryan loves him exactly that way. He knows exactly how his mother feels and is not above putting her in her place when necessary, although, she's smart enough to generally not say anything too snarky in front of him, however when she really gives Scott hell for "free-loading" on Christmas eve and Ryan's BIL spills the beans, Ryan makes it very clear to everyone how important Scott is to him.
The part I loved most about this whole story was Ryan's (and Scott's) absolute adoration of the other. Too often the family manages to cause the one guy to basically freeze and he allows them to treat his partner badly, but Ryan didn't. He was going to protect Scott no matter what. He wasn't ashamed he loved him, they were caught making out many times and he didn't care. He would keep his man emotionally safe at all cost and I really respected that attitude. It's how it should be and it was very romantic how it all ended.
My one bit of confusion was the BIL. He went from apparent homo-phobic jerk to their biggest cheerleader over a couple of days. I wasn't sure if the homophobia shtick was an act and he just needed to get to know Scott, or he had an epiphany, or what. I kept wondering if he'd been hit on the head by a Christmas tree or something since he seems to do an abrupt 180 on the relationship between the men.
Still, it was an absolutely adorable story without being too sappy sugary. A perfect feel-good story, although I still thing Ryan's got a horrible mother, even if she started to thaw slightly at the end.
4 Stars I've made a pledge to myself, my husband, and my children that I will never be one of those awful mothers in law that is so judgmental and just nasty, that no one wants to be around. I've been blessed with one who seems to think it's an Olympic sport to throw barbs at me just to see how deep they can go. Her wonderful trick it to try and get them all in when my husband isn't with in ear shot, so it looks like I'm over reacting. The one good thing that came out of all this is my aforementioned pledge, hopefully this will not be a trait that gets passed on.
When reading a book that has people being so nasty, I really lose my patience, especially when someone as wonderful as Scotty is treated so poorly. I love that Ryan always had his back. This couple is so sweet you may get a cavity, but they sure like to spice it up in and out of the bedroom with their hot chemistry. I could definitely read more about this couple...they are a treat!!
What can I say, another really good story by this author. I read the first two stories right before this one because they were short and to get the background on Ryan & Scott. Although how these two came together was a little far fetched, how they after three years was very heartwarming and sweet. This was a feel good christmasy read which leaves you with a smile.
A cute short story about two guys, Scott and Ryan, who have found each other, but who may have a hard time convincing Ryan's mother that they belong together, as they join the family for Christmas.
Ryan and Scott have been an established couple for three years. From the moment they met, they’ve had an intense and loving relationship between them. They live in a tiny apartment with their dog, Blitzkrieg, and have an all-around happy life together. One of the few niggles they have in their relationship is Ryan’s family. His mother does not believe that the carefree and fun-loving Scott is good enough for her corporate lawyer son, Ryan. She thinks that Scott is pretty much free loading off of Ryan and had made it no secret that she really does not approve of them. When Ryan suggests that they join his family to celebrate a week long Christmas vacation at his family’s cabin, Scott really doesn’t want to go, but because he wants Ryan to be happy, agrees to spend the Christmas holiday with them. Once they get there they are surrounded by kids, a crazy family, snow, good food and a mother who is insistent that Scott will never be good enough for her son. After all is said and done, will Ryan and Scott be able to survive their Christmas holiday with their relationship intact?
I really loved this book! Ryan and Scott are clearly in love and are made for one another. I appreciated how they stand together as a unit and support each other on a very loving, emotional level. They look out for each other and make sacrifices to keep each other happy. They are truly kindred spirits and I loved every moment I spent reading about them.
I also appreciated how Ms. Lane did not sweep some of the problems Ryan and Scott had with Ryan’s mother under the rug. This was portrayed realistically in my opinion because there are many times in our lives that we DO have problems and issues with other family members. I did like how much Ryan stood up for Scott, and put him first throughout the novel. Scott also does what he can to keep peace within the family and even though he realizes that he’ll never be good enough in Ryan’s mother’s eyes, he still tries to keep a positive attitude and continues to just be himself.
One of the great things about this book is that it has Ms. Lane’s trademark humor and the sweet heartfelt way she tells a story. Her characters always live and breathe off of the written page and live deep into this reader’s heart. I thoroughly enjoyed this sexy, sweet holiday story and hope that Ms. Lane will continue to write more about Ryan and Scott in the future.
Puppy, Car and Snow is the third book that features Ryan and Scott’s story. Although I do not believe it’s necessary to read all of the books in this series to be able to understand and easily follow the lives of Ryan and Scott. This could definitely be read as a stand-alone story. But, I do recommend reading all of them because they are all fantastic and really shows how amazing this couple is together.
And right now, in the car, the look he was shooting Ryan was pure, one-hundred-percent, unadulterated, give-it-to-me-baby, fuck-me-without-mercy-in-front-of-the-dog sin.
While story #1 is HOT and story #2 is kinda HOT, this 3rd story is pure sweet -- as Ryan and his prince Charming, Scott, heads to Ryan's family cabin to spend Christmas and face, well, the dragon lady that is Ryan's mother. Not that she doesn't agree with their relationship, she just doesn't 'agree' with Scott's mercurial, butterfly mind.
I think Ryan and Scott easily become one of my favorite couples from Amy Lane. I know that I don't always 'agree' with her writings, that sometimes they work and sometimes they don't ... but this one definitely WORKS. I love Ryan and Scott, I adore their devotion from one another. And no worries, there's HEA ... involving well, uhm, rings. There, I spoil you. Sorry *not a bit*
Oh, and I also love the promiscuous unabashed humor that Amy Lane writes here. Another one of my favorite (apart from that one I quoted above?)
Oh God. He totally meant business. Scott’s hard-on went from limp biscuit to porn star in one brush of his fingers on Ryan’s bare hip
Awesome! :)

If have ever borrowed an e-book from your library, then you know from experience the hurry up and wait syndrome. You are placed in the queue and sometimes you receive the books quickly and other times the wait seems forever. (I am 357th on the list for Still Alice by Lisa Genova.)
“Scott was his, all his, and not a soul in the world could doubt it or question it or accuse Scott of being anything but the other half of Ryan’s soul.”
With lines like that Puppy, Car, and Snow was worth the wait. Amy Lane is so good and this little book is proof of just how good. Scotty and Ryan are a wonderful romantic couple and, they are heartwarming in all the little ways they take care of each other. I love it when main characters act like adults. Ryan is an attorney and makes more money than Scotty but that is never an issue with this couple. Neither partner is made to feel inferior. They are “each other’s everything”.
Problems ensue when they go to Ryan’s parents for Christmas. Ryan’s dad is open, accepting and loving. Ryan’s mom - talk about an adult acting like a 5 year old. While she accepts that her son is gay, she is critical of Scotty and doesn’t make an effort to hide her disdain.
I loved how Ryan and Scotty support each other and the ending is so sweet!
"Puppy, Car, and Snow" by Amy Lane was a great Christmas read. Ryan and Scott have been together for three years and are going to Ryan's families cabin for Christmas. Ryan's mom is hard to please and makes it miserable for Scott. She is always giving looks and saying rude things. I liked the Christmas Eve scene with Scott and Ryan. I also liked how they were able to overcome such bitterness from the ones that should be supporting your life decisions. Amy has done a great job with this one sitting read.
i know this was supposed to be heart-warming, and it kinda was -- except that i wanted to dropkick ryan's arsehole of a mother into the next century. and i didn't like the implicit message that you're stuck with family and have to put up with whatever they put you through. ryan does try to run interference, and defends scott from every snide remark, but frankly, what this mother needed was a serious confrontation and an ultimatum: stop denigrating my partner, you sorry excuse for a human being, or i'm outta here until you grow up. yeah, we all need to make compromises, but no, we do NOT need to kowtow to our parents when they behave badly. everyone just placated her. i don't buy the "oh, she's just protective of her children" line either, because she didn't act like she actually gave a shit about ryan, or she surely would have noticed that he was beyond happy with scott, and she would have acknowledged what a decent person scott was, because he behaved like a wet dream of a partner, what with the cooking and caring for the kids and all. so even if she was too hoity-toity to accept his free-wheeling ways, there was much to be appreciated about scott, and she didn't try, and instead actively attempted to hurt him, which she must have known would hurt ryan. *gah*.
for me, the mother ruined most of what could have been heart-warming here, and i ended up feeling angry, and didn't even enjoy the sex (kinda like ryan, it all dried up for me under the withering criticism, and because i didn't have scott's actual lovely cock in front of me, i didn't get distracted from the anger sufficiently to eke out some erotic feelings). ryan and scott are adorable characters, and i am thrilled for their happy ending, but it's a shame amy lane couldn't come up with a more complex character for the mother, somebody i didn't outright hate.
Short warm-hearted story. Third in a series (which I only just found out!)
An established couple visiting parents for Christmas. Scotty is sweet and undervalued as chief chef and childminder, Ryan is right to be besotted. They work well as a couple, complimenting each other and clearly in love. The dog isn't bad either.
Ryan's mother is a bit one dimensionable as a sucessful judgemental matriach, not unbelievable, but I was wishing someone would call her on it. Only real niggle I had was that after three years she wasn't aware of Scott's parents' nationality or employ - this woman would know.
A refreshing lack of angsting. I'm off to seek the first two.
Oh my gosh, I'm so happy I finally read this book. Number 3 in the series, I read the first two, both short stories, about 6 or 7 years ago and yet I picked up with this memorable couple as soon as I started reading. Ryan and Scott are on their way to Ryan's house to spend Christmas with Ryan's family-- a wealthy family with one of the most obnoxious mothers I've ever encountered. Truly, i wanted to smack her!
But besides her, there was a homophobic bro-in-law who came around, a very nice and supportive father, a somewhat mousey sister, and a few fun kids who make snow forts and snowball fights fun.
Both Ryan and Scott have secret Christmas gifts for each other but will they even get to share them when Ryan's mother keeps throwing up roadblocks? Let's just say I felt for Scotty but Ryan was 100 percent supportive and came through.
Great story, fairly short but packed a lot of punch. HEA, of course.
I know this wasn't recently published and not sure where this book fell in Amy Lane's career but I hve come to expect more from her. Ryan and Scott, truly a romantic pair with lots of love. This is third book in the series bringing closure to them. They are headed for what many consider the ultimate - marriage.
This book is a perfect little Christmas gem. It has dogs and kids and food and family (a little too much family) and everything is tied up with a bow. If you haven’t read the two previous books in the series, this one stands alone just fine. Excellent seasonal read!
Scott and Ryan are ready to spend Christmas with Ryan’s family. Poor Scotty just seemed to get all the harshness from Ryan’s mom. Both men love each other deeply and that is what they need to remember. A holiday romance that reminds you sometimes family is hard. #CMCon25
Book – Puppy, Car and Snow (Ryan and Scott #3) Author – Amy Lane Star rating - ★★★☆☆ No. of Pages - 92
Movie Potential – ★★☆☆☆ Ease of reading – easy to read, but POV is still confusing Would I read it again – Probably not.
The relationship is further on in this story, but there's still the deep sense of dissatisfaction that the entire beginning of their relationship – the best part – was skimmed over and is only ever mentioned in short, sex-filled flashbacks. That doesn't really change much in this one; not even one page in and we're into a sex scene.
The difference here is that there's a solid attempt at a plot. It's not skimmed over or hinted at, but a full grown plot that, for the most part, works. The plot is Christmas themed, but also more about the progression of their relationship and the challenges it has faced. On the down side, this story acts as though the first two never happened. For some reason, we get an entire half page about how the two of them met, despite book 2 never really recapping the events of book 1 in any similar way. This way doesn't work for me, either, because it's more like an information dump than any kind of reminiscing that it could have been, over all the time they've had together.
Suddenly, despite the contrary being true in both previous stories, this one makes out that Ryan is the sexually dominant of the two. He's also the strong buffer for awkward conversations, which was Scott's role in both previous stories. This is also the first time we've been told that Scott can't get it up during sex, which is a pretty important thing to know since both previous stories involved copious amounts of sex, so this should have come up before.
~
Overall, this one reads more like a complete story, with a real plot and less sex (though they're still a few scenes), but there are also times when it reads as though this is the only story of this couple. It recaps the previous stories in a non-interesting way, so that if I accidentally picked this one up first, I wouldn't bother going looking to read the previous two. It also completely changed the dynamics of their relationship, turning things on their head, contradicting the previous stories and such.
For me, I'd say read this one and don't bother so much with the previous two. All the important details are in this one and, if so inclined, you can read the other two as “fillers” for the hot snippets. Otherwise, this story says all you need to know about the characters and their story, without the lackluster sex filled shorts of the previous books.
This is the third (and last) part of Ryan and Scott's story. The First one, telling of how they've met was a part of the Anthology "Curious? A Woman's Introduction to Gay Romance" I haven't read. I started from the second one - Phonebook when they are a formed couple.
I liked the second installment, it was sweet and sexy, liked the interaction between Ryan and Scott, they might be different but they are perfect for one another. In this one they have to struggle through the holidays with Ryan's family, mostly his mother and brother-in-law and their constant criticism.
Thing is, I didn't really get the "point" of this short novella. It ended abruptly and even though there WAS a progression of their relationship as well as a way for us to see everything these two went through since they met - 3 years into their relationship, I was disappointed it stayed a bit "shallow". I mean, Ryan and Scott are THE sweetest together, and how they see each other and care for one another was beautiful to read but in the situation that they were in it was just constant heart ache that neither of them cared for and the closure on the matter wasn't even there. It was strange. I was missing SOMETHING that would feel as though Scott got closer to his boyfriends' family and I'm not even sure it was there.
A very light read. If you're into those you'll probably enjoy this story. Like the previous one, it was funny and easy going.
