Chingiz Aitmatov

Chinghiz Aitmatov (Чингиз Айтматов, Tschingis Aitmatow, Čingiz Ajtmatov, Tšõngõz Ajtmatov, Cengiz Aytmatov, Tsjingiz Ajtmatov, Tchinguiz Aïtmatov, جنكيز ايتماتوف) was an author who wrote in both Russian and Kyrgyz. He was the best known figure in Kyrgyzstan literature.

Aitmatov's parents were civil servants in Sheker. The name Chingiz is the same as the honorary title of Genghis Khan. In early childhood he wandered as a nomad with his family, as the Kyrgyzstan people did at the time. In 1937 his father was charged with "bourgeois nationalism" in Moscow, arrested and executed in 1938.

Aitmatov lived at a time when Kyrgyzstan was being transformed from one of the most remote lands of the Russian Empire to a republic of the USSR. The future author studied at a Soviet school in Sheker. He also worked from an early age. At fourteen he was an assistant to the Secretary at the Village Soviet. He later held jobs as a tax collector, a loader, an engineer's assistant and continued with many other types of work.

In 1946 he began studying at the Animal Husbandry Division of the Kirghiz Agricultural Institute in Frunze, but later switched to literary studies at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow, where he lived from 1956 to 1958. For the next eight years he worked for Pravda. His first two publications appeared in 1952 in Russian: The Newspaper Boy Dziuio and Ашым. His first work published in Kyrgyz was Ак Жаан (White Rain) in 1954, and his well known work Jamilya appeared in 1958. 1980 saw his first novel The Day Lasts More than a Hundred Years; his next significant novel, The Scaffold was published in 1988. The Day Lasts More than a Hundred Years and other writings were translated into several languages.

Aitmatov suffered kidney failure and on 16 May 2008 was admitted to a hospital in Nuremberg, Germany, where he died of pneumonia on 10 June 2008, aged 79. His obituary in The New York Times characterized him as "a Communist writer whose novels and plays before the collapse of the Soviet Union gave a voice to the people of the remote Soviet republic of Kyrgyz" and adds that he "later became a diplomat and a friend and adviser to the Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev."

Chinghiz Aitmatov belonged to the post-war generation of writers. His output before Jamila was not significant, a few short stories and a short novel called Face to Face. But it was Jamila that came to prove the author's work. Louis Aragon described the novellete as the world's most beautiful love story, raising it even above Rudyard Kipling's World's Most Beautiful Love Story. Aitmatov's representative works also include the short novels Farewell, Gulsary!, The White Ship, The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years, and The Scaffold.

Aitmatov was honoured in 1963 with the Lenin Prize for Jamila and later he was awarded a State prize for Farewell, Gulsary!. Aitmatov's art was glorified by admirers. Even critics of Aitmatov mentioned high quality of his novels.

Aitmatov's work has some elements that are unique specifically to his creative process. His work drew on folklore, not in the ancient sense of it; rather, he tried to recreate and synthesize oral tales in the context of contemporary life. This is prevalent in his work; in nearly every story he refers to a myth, a legend, or a folktale. In The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years a poetic legend about a young captive turned into a mankurt serves a tragic allegory and becomes a significant symbolic expression of the philosophy of the novel.

A second aspect of Aitmatov's writing is his ultimate closeness to our "little brothers" the animals, for their and our lives are intimately and inseparably connected. The two center characters of Farewell, Gulsary! are a man and his stallion. A camel plays a prominent role in The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years; one of the key turns of the novel which decide

And may you find happiness in learning...

A deeply moving and haunting tale. It's better to read this story without knowing much about it and experience it yourself. Duishen (or The first teacher), a devotee of the Russian leader Lenin (Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov) embarks on a mission of opening a school and teaching children in a village where people are illiterate - they mock him; sneer at his ambitions. Still, he dreams of a bright future for his students.
And there's a young orphan girl, Altyani. She cherishes Duishen's kindness , loves and respect her first teacher.
Duishen dreams of sending her to a town to acquire education. He fights for her and sacrifices whatever he has.
Aitmatov is a master of creating deep human-relationships; that have no particular name but felt with heart; nurtured with selflessness and compassion.

There's a glimmer of hope and even even amidst hope, there lies sadness and longing. There's regret and things left unsaid - One is not always courageous enough to speak one's heart out. A story of selflessness and sacrifice. It's also about rebellion against the norm and ignorance . Altynai becomes locus of hope and aspirations; a vessel for the fulfillment of ambitions.

"Why can't we leave our footprints forever in places with precious memories for us? If I could find the path Duishen and I followed coming down from the mountains, I would prostrate myself on the ground and kiss my teacher's footprints. The path means more to me than all the roads in the world."

In the end, no one remembers or cares about the man who was the pioneer of education in the village.

That should have been the privilege of our first teacher, the first Communist in our village, Duishen. Of all the people there he had the greatest right to it. But everything was just the other way about.

A sad story; still, achingly inspiring.

Ancora adesso non so cosa dipingerò.

L'EMANCIPAZIONE

I don't know to which "genre" this short story belongs. I was tempted to label it "romance", but then I didn't. And why bother? It can belong to any genre, that doesn't make any difference. The crucial thing here is, I read it, and I liked it for no clear reason.

In fact, the story is too predictable, too short, too simple. The ending (the painter's talking to the readers) was awkward. Still, I liked it. It's funny that I didn't like the excerpt in our textbook back in secondary school. I was 14, or 15? I remember sitting in the next-to-last row, thinking of everything but the lesson, while pretending that I was listening to the teacher very closely. I hated the description parts the most. The maple trees? I didn't see why they're soooooo special to play a role in a story. Now at 20, I could never have guessed that the parts I now enjoy most, are the description about those same boring maple trees.

How greatly one can change...

Another little story that touched me deeply. I don't know what category this will fall if ever it comes to that but I like to think of it as 'untold emotions'. Altheenai managed to disappoint me and pissed me off at the end but before it came to that, this tiny book touched so many other aspects such as love, compassion, selflessness and deep rooted emotions.

Forget everything about the communism, the core is relevant even for today. I think we need more people like Duishen today more than ever..

Around the World Reading Challenge: KYRGYZSTAN

4.5 rounded down

A short but impressive and impactful story that takes place in a small Kirghiz village after the Russian Revolution, when a young communist comes to educate the children of resistant rural villagers. The pacing was excellent, and the story, though simple, was quite moving.

I got a copy of Chingiz Aitmatov’s Duishen novel as an e-book through the Facebook Group I read the 35-page e-book within a day. It was easier to read as I had already read its Sinhala translation, ගුරු ගීතය. Aitmatov’s Duishen is basically a soviet propaganda novel but it allures any reader irrespective of race or creed as its theme, the emotional bond of a hardworking teacher and a talented student is universal.

Duishen, an ex-revolutionary, comes to his village after the revolution and the revolutionary Soviet government has entrusted him with the task of starting a new school without providing any facility except a meager salary for him. He explains the importance of educating the children in the village to their parents but fails to convince them. They are ignorant busy farmers and don’t understand the value of education as the only option they see to succeed in life is farming.

Having been snubbed by the villagers for his request to help him build a school, he embarks on a solitary task of converting an abandoned stable into a school. His only admirer is a teenage girl called Altynai who helps him dropping cow dung as fuel in his stable in secret one day. It is from this girl’s perspective that the book has been written. She becomes an immediate beneficiary of the school as she is very smart in learning. But her guardian aunt and uncle (Altynai is an orphan) loath the school and only let her go to school after Duishen uses force with the revolutionary government’s documents.

After becoming a great admirer of young teacher Duishen, Altynai almost falls in love with him but he treats her only as a loyal student. His only dream is to see Altynai succeed in education and become a big academic one day.

In the meantime Altynai’s guardians sell her to a middle-aged rascal of a man who has daughters older than Altynai. He already has a wife and Altynai is raped by him in his hut while she was only 15. She becomes a concubine of this cad. Before being raped, Duishen fights this man and his helpers to save Altynai but he fails as he is overpowered by the group.

I think I have told you more than enough. The rest rests in your hands now. Download or buy the book and read it for yourself.

There is also a movie based on this book called The First teacher but it is extremely rare to find.

Based on the few things I knew about Aitmatov's work before reading this short story, I found it to be surprisingly political. It advocates (female) education and depicts the horrors of forced marriage in an effective way that I didn't expect from it. It may be a bit too positive about Soviet rule - even though it might have brought some positive change to small Khirghiz towns - and the relationship between the teacher and the young woman was described a bit too melodramatically for me, but it was overall still an enjoyable read.

“If there is one single book on education which will make you weep, this is it.”
Ah, what a lovely novella! This small novel contain a lot more power than many robust novels. I would strongly recommend this book to any book lover who is open to world literature. It's magnificence lies in it's fluency, humanity, nostalgia and celebration of ordinary people's efforts. It is one of the rare gems one can always cherish and look back to it again and again.
This story is about a young girl, Altynai, who lives in Kirghiz and wants to go to school. Duishen, is a young man and communist who decides to start a school and educate the children. He goes to their houses and collects them and brings them to school every day. He becomes very special to Altynai, and a special relationship develops between them.
The story revolves around this illiterate teacher (Duishen), his student (Altynai) and the two poplar trees standing tall like forming a link between the past and the present.
I love how this story of just 35 pages (read the English translated version off a downloaded PDF), has made a lasting impression on my mind. There were passages which pierced my heart. Beautiful.❤
"Yes, there will be winter, there will be cold, there will be snowstorms, but then there will be spring again..."
"Why can't we leave our footprints forever in places filled with precious memories for us?"
"The memories of childhood are particularly precious."
"Children, if only you knew what a beautiful future awaits you...!"
"There, at their foot, I left my childhood, like a broken piece of green magic glass..."
