The chaos of battle is shown in all its brutal glory. The enemy is throwing troops into battle like they're going out of style, even sacrificing them for the most important objectives. The humans have no chance, so a tactical retreat is the only option so far.

John-117 receives some impressive upgrades to his armor making him even more formidable in battle. The Spartans are tasked with capturing a Covenant Prophet to try to broker a truce or even peace with the enemy. Meanwhile the Covenant discover the location of planet Reach.

*Note*: This review is the same which was written for Halo: Fall of Reach - Covenant. Since a lot of the critique and elements are repeated in this book as well, I felt no need to write another piece for the same.

------------------------------

Halo: Fall of Reach the original novel by Eric Nylund, had a lot of memorable elements which added to the lore and backstory of characters such as a Commander Keyes, Blue Team, and of course Master Chief. It had shown how desperate humanity was against an unrelenting enemy, who over gunned, outnumbered and out teched them.

UNSC and the Humanity were holding on by the skin of their teeth, thanks to secrecy provided by the Cole Protocol, the ingenuity, resourcefulness and superior tactics of its commanders, and the resilience of their ground forces, spearheaded by the Spartan-II. But reach presented humanity with it's most devastating failure. Paraphrasing from the novel:

"We were not merely decimated, that would imply we lost one out of every ten ships. But here, for every ship which managed to limp away from the battlefield we lost 10 good ones."

The comic, despite having the visual freedom, fails to catch the gravity of this increasingly deteriorating scenario, doesn't give ample screen-time for important character deaths, or in many cases completely omits those parts of the story which made it engaging.

The conclusion of the trilogy adapting Eric Nylund's novel 'The Fall of Reach'.
The Covenant have discovered the UNSC headquarters world of Reach and have launched a full-scale attack. Captain Keyes, Cortana, Master Chief and the Spartans have to do everything they can to fight the Covenant and ensure that the location of Earth doesn't fall into the hands of an enemy intent on wiping out all of humanity.

The titular Fall of Reach battle makes up the entirety of this book, so things are pretty action-heavy here. I liked that Nylund's use of inventive military tactics is carried over into the adaptation, with humanity having to think outside of the box to counter the Covenant's superior technology. There's also a nice ticking-clock feel to the story as the protagonists realise that there is a single ship still holding the location of Earth that they have to prevent from falling into the hands of the Covenant at all costs.

This book's big downside, and it's one admittedly shared by the novel, is that it ends pretty abruptly. Here we don't find out the fate of some of the Spartans and the battle of Reach gets left behind when the Pillar of Autumn flees into slipspace.
The final pages are a nice lead-in to the events of the first Halo game but nevertheless you're left with the feeling that you've not just finished a complete story.

As usual, the book is always better, but the final installment in the Halo: The Fall of Reach trilogy still delivers.

The ending of the story is just the beginning of the Halo saga.

Plus, I liked how Cortana was drawn. Great artwork!

Fall of Reach: Invasion is the third graphic novel retelling the story of Eric Nylund's Fall of Reach book from back in 2001. It begins shortly before the Covenant arrive at Reach, but with some flashbacks/forwards it jumps around a bit to try to fit everything in there. It's a little jarring, but thankfully the comics keep the trend of having the location and date at the beginning of each scene, so it's easier to keep things together in your head.

The adaptation is done well. There's a good amount that's left out, mainly character development of the Spartans. I thought they did a much better job of this in the first two novels, where you see them training and interacting more. Invasion focuses almost solely on John 117, so Linda, Fred, Kelly, and the rest all get the short end of the stick. We finally meet Cortana though, and a good amount of time is spent digging into her character, which is much appreciated. All-in-all I felt like it was a bit too condensed and could have used another issue or two to fit everything in.

The art was great and captured the Halo universe well. All the characters were recognizable and the Spartans were even distinguishable from each other. Environments were crisp and detailed.

For a Halo fan, you should definitely pick this up - it's one of the core stories of the universe told in a new way very successfully. For sci-fi fans, I'd suggest the novel over the comics, but if you prefer the visual storytelling format it works quite well.

not bad story. engaging, perhaps not as detailed as william deetz novels, but that is a good thing, action and suspense over realism makes the halo stories work
