Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The Dasher/The Duke/The guy whose name appears only once in the entire book is a self-important asshole who thinks he is God's gift to the world. He is bored with women and insists he will never marry because women do not keep his interest. And no, he isn't gay. Felica (though in my mind I called her Felicia cause Felica is such an unfortunate name) had survived a traumatic childhood experienced and was saved by the Duke. Because of this, she has idolized him to a degree that made me uncomfortable most of the time but she is phobic of men.
A few attempted kidnappings later along with some shocking realization that women can be intelligent, The Duke underwent some shocking realizations and had a tiny ego check. The concept that a woman has to be pure and inexperienced to be worth something did get on my nerves.
Overall, a sweet yet slightly ridiculous romance. HEA is assured.
The Hero, a Duke, saves the heroine from her father who has been beating her. The father is a distant cousin and the only reason the Duke can take the heroine away without anyone objecting is that he is the head of the family.
The heroine gets placed in a convent to keep her away from her brute of a father. But because of her experiences, she is now deathly afraid of men, except for the Hero who she sees as her savior.
When the heroine turns 18, the Hero finds out she is also an heiress. Her father is dead but was actually incredibly wealthy and left his money to her. The Hero goes to pick her up at school and is pleasantly surprised that she is quite beautiful. However, he is concerned that she is afraid of all men.
There is an evil relation who wants to marry the heroine for her money. He tries to kidnap her 3x. Thankfully the Hero saves her every single time and realizes that he loves her.
He also realizes that he needs to woo her gently because of her fears, and for the first time, he feels he is not worthy of a woman. Not to worry, after the Hero saves the heroine for the last time from that evil relation the heroine realizes that she loves the Hero since he is the only one she is not afraid of.
Also, she is somehow conveniently cured of her fear of men and is no longer AFRAID 😳 😂
Years ago, the Duke of Darlington (aka “The Dasher”) found his cousin brutally beating his thirteen-year-old, half-starved daughter. Outraged, the Duke disowned her father and carried the injured girl to safety. Now, the Duke has learned that the tearful, bleeding child he left in the charge of a French convent five years earlier has turned eighteen. She’s also inherited an immense fortune that’s made her the target of fortune hunters. Immediately, the Duke sets off to Paris to retrieve her and do his duty, launching her in Society and securing a suitable husband. However, the young woman he finds is nothing like he expected: first, Fiona is stunning; second, she worships him as her savior; third, she is absolutely terrified of men.
This is a bad book. Not because it is badly written or because the women are naive and only desires beautiful dresses and great jewellery, but because of the concept of romance. The Duke is your typical Cartland hero; rich, handsome, womaniser and flawless in an ocean of fortune hunters and rapists. HOWEVER, the girl - because in this situation she is a girl at the very least mentally - has been madly in love with the Duke since she was 13, while she is deadly afraid of every other man.
In short this book is making a romance out of a frightened girl and the man that is trying to manipulate her to trust him enough to want to make love to him....
Beurk
This might be one of the least satisfying BC book I have read this year. The hero has many affair on this book and the heroine's fear somewhat under my skin....
