The ancient Egyptians thought big and built bigger, leaving behind monuments and messages that have endured for five millennia despite tomb robbers and the ravages of time. Pyramids and mummies tell us about their deaths, but new technologies are peeling the wraps off their mysterious lives. In Everything Ancient Egypt kids will discover all they want to know about the mysteries of ancient Egypt and learn new weird, wacky, and fascinating facts as well. Sections in the book include Rise of the Pharaohs, Death and the Afterlife, Life in Ancient Egypt, and Fun With Ancient Egypt (a section that provides readers with exciting hands-on learning!). Stunning photos and an interactive glossary round out this exciting and engaging new series addition.
Crispin Boyer lives in San Francisco and writes about history, wildlife, and technology. He and his wife, Ramah, are the lord and lady of a 1914 Victorian that is 700 times smaller than a typical castle but almost as drafty. Their microwave might not roast an ox like most medieval ovens, but at least their bathroom isn't a hole in the wall that empties into a stinky moat.

Pyramids. Mummies. Internal organs stuffed into canopic jars. Tombs full of golden treasure. Mysterious hieroglyphics. All of these images bring to mind one of the great civilizations, Ancient Egypt, a land that still holds considerable sway over the imagination 5,000 years later. This book, Everything Ancient Egypt from National Geographic Kids, was my go-to book in the last few years as a sixth grade Social Studies teacher/English Language Arts teacher. It is broken into four sections: Land of the Pharaohs, Death and the Afterlife, Life in Ancient Egypt, and Fun with Ancient Egypt, and each section is subdivided into four sections, plus a photo gallery. It is full of colorful pictures, and the text is broken into many smaller parts, creating the feeling that the book is an easier read than its seventh grade level. Also, with its overview of so many different aspects of Ancient Egyptian life, it is a great jumping off point for other books that have more specific topics within the realm of Ancient Egypt. As a sixth grade teacher, I loved using this book to teach vocabulary. With a glossary of words specific to Ancient Egypt, it was easy to teach the students about Tier 1, 2, and 3 words. I also had the students choose among the multiple Tier 2 words to put into Frayer boxes. On one page alone, the students could choose from the words appease, embodiment, fanciful, engulfing, harmonious, opulent, and tributes. This informational book is a wonderful text to use with whole class (which is what I did) or in small groups at a middle school level. Also, fifth graders and up could read this independently, especially those who are fascinated by the subject. It is a WOW book for me as I have seen firsthand that students love this book. The subject matter is fascinating, and this book does a terrific job of capturing the mystique of this ancient culture. I think teachers would be well rewarded if they bought a class set of these to use in sixth grade Social Studies or in English Language Arts as a supplement to the Social Studies instruction.
As you might imagine, National Geographic's Everything Ancient Egypt is full of gorgeous photographs and easily digestible information. The book's glossy magazine-style layout and interactive activities (like quizes, translation exercises, drawing tips) helps capture younger readers' attentions and imaginations. On the final pages, the book also includes a fantastic "Find Out More" list with recommended books, websites, videos and games. Some readers have complained that the book's binding fell apart quickly, but we did not have any issues with ours.
This book was a great read! I would classify it under informational texts. One unique feature of this book is the images and pictures they've included, they are stunning. I feel that this book would be appropriate for grades 3-6.
I am getting excited to visit Egypt 🇪🇬 again in just a few short months. I loved how much information this book had packed in. Children’s non- fiction is really the most amazing place to learn before travelling or experiencing a different place.
Chock full of information but the format is a bit too busy. I think a bit more negative space would help the comprehensibility of the book. My grandkids will enjoy the book with help from me.
This is really good reading, but definitely geared more to older kids or teenagers in terms of bulk of materials. I pulled references for my first grader.
I liked this book and I started the book in school but finished it on an ebook. I liked hearing about all of the cool facts from ancient Egypt because you get to see what life was like back then.
I chose this book because it is very easy to read. It would be suited for intermediate students because it has a lot of text. There are a variety of pictures and captions throughout as well as a glossary.
Twin-text: The Adventures of Melissa and Cleopatra (And Their Friend Katina) (c) 2015 by David J. Hirschfeld
I chose this text because it is a fun and silly book about pets in Egypt that explore the world of people. This is a fun and silly book to get kids interested in Egypt and what it is and why it is important in history.
