This is a fairly short biography of one of Russia's most renowned tsars. Not the most exciting read, but informative and a nice introduction to the topic.
A pretty boring biography. I hadn't realized what a war monger Peter the Great was though:
"Peter was at war constantly for twenty-eight years, from 1695 to 1723, first against Turkey, then against Sweden, finally against Persia. The devouring maw of the army and navy swallowed up over three-quarters of the revenue already in 1701, four-fifths by 1710, and even at the end of his reign more than two-thirds."
A good overview of the formative events which shaped Peter's personality, his efforts at westernisation and modernisation, and his legacy. In depth only at times, but a good primer for future studies.
A short intro to the despotic life and hyperactivity of Peter in leading Russia from the woods of Muscovy to the edge of becoming European. Written in a scholarly and almost boring style that became a challenge to complete.
