Mortimer Drake and his family continue to work towards a new understanding of how to survive as a supernatural family living in the mortal world. Unexpected events have altered their close-knit family even more as Mortimer’s mother gives birth to a baby girl. Is she human, vampire or something entirely different? A new battle in the war among the Undead begins as the Mother and Queen of the vampire race is discovered.
Wilkey does it again! After having read and loved Book One of his series, now Book Two OUT OF THE UNDERWORLD serves as a great continuation of his story.
Mortimer Drake is an excellent character that I could relate to. While in the first book we see him struggling to accept that he is a vampire, in this book we see him struggling to accept that fact that he is half-human and half-vampire. In this vein, he struggles with something that most youths can relate to: He wants to develop his powers faster. What youth doesn’t? I know I wanted to grow up faster, to seem more powerful in the eyes of my elders. Wilkey does an excellent job of expanding on that theme, and perfectly illustrates how Mortimer handles his continuing “growing up dead.”
Wilkey also expands on the Persephone myth, yet adds to it his own vampiric flare, creating a whole new perspective on the origin story of vampires. As an inquisitive amateur of Greek mythology, I found this touch refreshingly interesting, reminding me of one of my favorite (more adult) vampire books — I, Vampire, by Michael Romkey (whom some consider to be the male version of Anne Rice).
Wilkey’s cosmology is well-thought out, the pace of his story is action-packed, with excellent twists and turns, yet continuing to build from book one. I am eager to get to Book Three!
OUT OF THE UNDERWORLD is a great addition to the YA vampire genre, and a great follow up to his ongoing story. Great work!
I enjoyed this novel. I love the new mythos which Wilkey introduces as he creates his own vampire origin story. His research into ancient Greece and Greek mythology clearly shows within the novel, while adding his own vampiric flare to the story. A great mixture of history and creativity.
I also enjoyed watching Mortimer grow as a character. He seems to have fully accepted his transition from mortal to vampire in this second novel, allowing him to be thrown more quickly into the action.
Mortimer has great depth which should make the character easily relatable to young adult readers, who themselves often struggle in the transition between childhood and adulthood.
Out of the Underworld is the second book that follows Growing Up Dead. The story gets slightly better. I think it had the potential to be more. There are a lot of grammatical and spelling errors in it. And that is why the star dropped compared to the first book. I still think its readable and would definitely appeal to someone who loves Vampires no matter what. But those with a more mature taste of vampires you should probably pass this.
this is the second book in the series, and i found it much better than the first, but this is to be exspected as we now know the caracters much better.. i like how other supernatural being are brought in mixed with greek mythology :)
Greg Wilkeys Trilogy I feel in Love with. Its basically a story of a child/vampire who doesn't know hes a vampire. The whole series is fantastic and I really really loved it, fast read and thoroughly entertaining characters. I cant wait for more of his books!
Although I will continue and finish the series, I am still unimpressed with the proofreading that was done before these books were published. Blatant grammatical errors are found throughout the two books I've read.
